Dead Lines (Bear, Greg), by Greg Bear

With his acclaimed novels Darwin’s Children and Vitals, award-winning author Greg Bear turned intriguing speculation about human evolution and immortality into tales of unrelenting suspense. Now he ventures into decidedly more frightening territory in a haunting thriller that blends modern technology and old-fashioned terror, as it charts one man’s inexorable descent into a world of mounting supernatural dread.

For the last two years, Peter Russell has mourned the death of one of his twin daughters—who was just ten when she was murdered. Recent news of his best friend’s fatal heart attack has now come as another devastating blow. Divorced, despondent, and going nowhere in his career, Peter fears his life is circling the drain. Then Trans comes along. The brainchild of an upstart telecom company, Trans is (as its name suggests) a transcendent marvel: a sleek, handheld interpersonal communication device capable of flawless operation anywhere in the world, at any time. “A cell phone, but not”—transmitting with crystal clarity across a newly discovered, never-utilized bandwidth . . . and poised to spark a new-technology revolution. When its creators offer Peter a position on their team, it should be a golden opportunity for him. If only he wasn’t seemingly going mad.

Everywhere Peter turns, inexplicable apparitions are walking before him or reaching out in torment. After a chilling encounter with his own lost child he begins to grasp the terrifying truth: Trans is a Pandora’s box that has tapped into a frequency not of this world . . . but of the next. And now, via this open channel to oblivion, the dead have gained access to the living. For Peter, and for humankind, a long, shadowy night of the soul has descended, bringing with it the stuff of a horrifying nightmare from which they may never awaken.

By turns spine-tingling, provocative, and heart-wrenching, Dead Lines marks a major turning point in the consistently dazzling storytelling career of Greg Bear. Alongside its hero, Dead Lines peers into the darkest place we can imagine and wonders—fearfully—what might be peering back.

From Publishers Weekly
In this taut ghost story set in the California of everyone's dreams-and nightmares-from Hugo and Nebula winner Bear (Darwin's Children), anything-goes hardcore porn films have blasted softcore screenwriter Peter Russell's career. The horrifying abduction and murder of his young daughter has destroyed Russell's marriage; his best friend has just died; and Joseph Weinstein, the reclusive sugar daddy who employs Russell as a dogsbody, seems to be descending into senility. Worse follows. In pursuit of financial security, Russell sells Weinstein on "Trans," a seductive new gadget promising unlimited instant broad-band communication, and all too soon reaching out and touching via Trans even wakes the dead, whose path to the hereafter is now so clogged with spam and unlimited phone calls that they return to haunt the living. Bear's ability to incorporate scientific concepts into tightly woven, fast-paced story lines reaches menacing new proportions here, because it draws on that nagging suspicion that the ubiquitous, innocent-appearing cell phone may really be killing off its users. By deftly extrapolating that doubt into everyone's most dreaded fears-loss of job, loss of friends, loss of children-Bear reanimates the old story of Faust, who sold his soul for unlimited knowledge and power, hinting ominously that the price of rampant technology may be dearer than we think.

From Booklist
In perhaps his most mainstream novel to date, Nebula Award winner Bear envisions what might happen should a new technology open the floodgates on another dimension. In the near future, the technology in question is the "trans," a sort of souped-up cell phone with near-infinite bandwidth and perfect reception anywhere in the world. Peter Russell is a washed-up director of soft porn, living on handouts and reeling from the death of his closest friend, when the device's manufacturers offer him a chance to revamp his career and film their promotional videos. One of the assignment's perks is, of course, a batch of free trans phones--a blessing that may actually harbor a curse. For Peter begins to unravel and to see ghostly simulacra of both the living and the dead. Is he losing his mind, or have the trans' inventors tapped into a force that literally bends minds and even reality? Bear's masterful prose, effectively chilling and reminiscent of Koontz at his best, makes this a good pick for sf and horror fans. Carl Hays

Review
'Praise for Darwin's Radio and Darwin's Children A gripping evolutionary thriller that combines cutting-edge science with a compelling storyline. It's a novel that stretches the envelope of known science - which is exactly what science fiction should do' P.D. Smith Guardian 'Bear's ability to tell a good story is surpassed only by his enthusasiam for the advancing edge of molecular biology ... he might just be anticipating the next giant leap in our understanding of evolution and ourselves' Nature 'GREG BEAR develops his characters extremely well, and there is plenty of action, too, in Darwin's Children ... Bear is very good at blending hard science, politics and fiction, and this is one of his strongest novels yet. Convincing, and at times depressing, it tackles the difficult question of whether a government gripped by prejudice and fear can be prevented from wiping out its perceived enemies' New Scientist

A Technological Ghost Story
By Arthur W Jordin
Dead Lines (2004) is a ghost story. Sometime in the near future, a new form of communications -- Trans -- has been developed. Using analog technology over an extremely broadband channel, it provides exceptionally clear sound and promises to allow an almost unlimited number of concurrent conversations without any crosstalk. The only drawback is that this medium is shared with the dead!

Peter Russell was a producer of low budget softcore sexploitation films. He got out the business just as the hardcore stuff began to flood the market. Now he is an agent for Joseph Adrian Benoliel, a Hollywood investor and former business partner during his film producing days.

In this novel, Peter receives a message stating that his best friend, Phil Richards, has died. Phil's ex-wife Lydia had left a note in the house and Carla Wyss, an old friend, had found the note and called Peter. The note said that Phil had died of a stroke or heart attack.

Peter has an appointment with Joseph. After briefly returning home, he drives out to the Salammbo estate in Malibu. When he knocks on the door, a young man named Stanley Weinstein admits him and immediately offers him a Trans phone. After Peter concludes his business with Joseph, Weinstein walks out with Peter; he describes the communications service, offers Peter ten thousand dollars to convince Joseph to invest, and gives Peter the remaining phones in the box to hand out to others.

Phil's memorial service will be held at his house in Tiburon. Peter had not been previously aware that Phil had a house in Marin county. After the memorial service, he goes looking for the Phil's old motor home that they had dreamed of using to travel around together on the World's Longest Old Farts Cross-country Hot Dog Escapade and Tour. From the amount of yellow police tape on vehicle and the fingerprint dust, Peter finally knows where Phil had died: behind the wheel of the motor home.

Since Lydia had taken the five hundred he had received for running Joseph's errand, Peter is down to his last ten bucks. He calls Trans and discovers that they are located in the old San Andreas prison complex (which is being converted into an office park) and receives an invitation to come by the next day. There Peter gets a tour to the facility built into the old death row building as well as an advance on his commission.

During his perambulations, Peter has been having strange experiences. In Peter's house, he sees a translucent image of Lydia having an emotional crisis. After sleeping in his car by the beach while waiting for his appointment with Trans, he is visited by a crystal clear vision of an old man and three children. Moreover, he has weird dreams.

Peter learns that he has been seeing wraiths -- visualizations of the living -- and specters -- appearances of the dead -- and realizes that these visions and the dreams have occurred only when a Trans unit is near. He tries to gain more information from the company, but Weinstein denies any connection. However, the inventor of the device, Arpad Kreisler, is beginning to suspect otherwise.

In this story, Peter is faced with the spiritual realm underlying ordinary reality. Trans is providing an interface with this realm which allows the dead to manifest in everyday life. Peter is probably the only one that can stop the intrusions.

This story is being marketed as a mainstream novel, but it is really science fiction with a fantastic premise. As with Hamilton's Reality Dysfunction, the souls of the dead have come back to confront and possess the living. If Trans is not terminated, the whole world could be taken over by the dead.

Highly recommended for Bear fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of supernatural presences in the ordinary world.

From Darwin's Radio to infernal cellphones
By A Customer
I've been a Greg Bear fan from 'The Wind from a Burning Woman" right on up to "Darwin's Children." So I was eager to read this horror tale, described on the book jacket as "spine-tingling, provocative, and heart-wrenching."
Unfortunately, the book is none of these. Rather, it's an uneasy mix - not blend - of modern technology and old-fashioned haunting, with a little possession thrown in on the side. There's even a murky hint of Stephen King's "The Langoliers" - the suggestion of supernatural entities cleaning up behind the scenes.
It takes major suspension of disbelief to buy into the story's premise: new cellphone technology taps into a previously undiscovered source of energy which somehow involves the afterlife. Then Bear tries to tie together three story lines connected only by forced coincidence: the protagonist's chance involvement with the new technology; the recent murder of his daughter; and the dark past of his enigmatic employer. The result is unconvincing.
Most importantly, the book just isn't scary. The characters never become fully realized people we care about. Though strange and frightening things happen to them, we're not involved enough to be scared for, or with, them. At one point, the protagonist, Peter Russell, fails to recognize a familiar person at a key moment in the story - a failure not believable by any stretch of the imagination. A real person would never have done this.
Much as I'd like to, I can't recommend this book. For good horror, read Peter Straub or Owl Goingback. For quality Bear, read 'Darwin's Radio" and "Darwin's Children', or even his older works such as 'Blood Music." But stay away from this one.

Non-Chilling Ghost Story
By Joshua Koppel
This is a strange book that promises to be about ghosts. There are ghosts in the way there is food in My Dinner With Andre. They may be there, but they are not the story. Instead we meet a film maker and photographer who is at a very low point in his life. He has no real work (other than odd jobs for a rich eccentric), no wife, one of his children was murdered and he is a recovering alcoholic. Things really could not get much worse.

But things do change when a chance encounter at the rich eccentric's house puts him in touch with a start-up telecom company. They have a new product that is to cell phones what cell phones are to two cans and a piece of string. Unfortunately the bandwidth the devices use pass through the realm of the dead. Sounds spooky, right? Wrong. For a ghost story, we don't get any noticeable ghost activity until the second half of the book (around page 175). Most of the story reads like a seedier version of Bradbury's WHO KILLED CONSTANCE. Strange characters and countless references to the film and photography industry make this more of a tribute to or a eulogy for the industry than a ghost story.

The ghosts in the book (mostly off-stage) do cause the main character to start asking questions. He questions himself, his family, his career and mostly what really happened to his dead daughter. But while there are ghosts in the book it is not a ghost story. While there is a serial killer in the book it is not a thriller. It is more just a simple look at a man's life and how it cam to reach this low point. Oh, there are a few minor revelations, but really nothing special. If you liked Bradbury's WHO KILLED CONSTANCE you might like this one but if you are looking for Straub's GHOST STORY or a book version of Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense, then you will be disappointed.

Unfortunately I was put off right at the start of the book as I read s number of descriptive flaws in the first three pages. I found it inexcusable for an established author such as Bear to get minor details so wrong.

What Astrology Was Meant to Be
By Angela
I am a skeptic who admits that while there may be value to ancient forms of divining, they are in this day and age often distorted to the point of confusion, or even worthlessness. This book completely satisfied my desire for instruction from an authentic point of view. The author sees astrology as a tool for self-exploration, offering intuitive questions, rather than definitions, based on one's chart.
The tone of the book is nurturing and extremely positive. Every combination of planets and signs is viewed as potential for spiritual growth.
The book is laid out in sections, introducing the reader first to the planets, then to the signs, then the houses. You learn to read your chart (and resources for acquiring a free chart are included) by asking yourself specific questions based on planetary placement, and also by studying the charts and descriptions of people the author has worked with extensively. The examples and questions integrate the reader's knowledge very effectively, so one's resulting understanding of the chart goes very deep.
She also explains very clearly how to view the relationships among the planets (conjunctions, squares, trines, etc.), and offers guidance in interpreting each of these in one's own chart.
While providing clear explanations of all aspects of astrology, the author shows obvious respect for the reader's ability to look inside and find the answers that apply to his or her own specific situation. She achieves a beautiful balance between providing solid guidance and encouraging the necessary independent thinking. I am grateful for the time and care the author put into creating a work that has proven so valuable in my process!

LOVED IT!
By Wend Stewart
I've been an astrologer since the mid-60's so I've read about a billion astrology books. There are a only handful that I would heartily recommend and this one is at the top of the list. Fabulous for beginners yet still providing plenty of really compelling material for experienced astrologers as well. How'd she do that?!

A Chosen Few: The Resurrection of European Jewry (Ballantine Reader's Circle), by Mark Kurlansky

A POWERFUL, DEEPLY MOVING NARRATIVE OF HOPE REBORN
IN THE SHADOW OF DESPAIR

Fifty years after it was bombed to rubble, Berlin is once again a city in which Jews gather for the Passover seder. Paris and Antwerp have recently emerged as important new centers of Jewish culture. Small but proud Jewish communities are revitalizing the ancient centers of Budapest, Prague, and Amsterdam. These brave, determined Jewish men and women have chosen to settle–or remain–in Europe after the devastation of the Holocaust, but they have paid a price. Among the unexpected dangers, they have had to cope with an alarming resurgence of Nazism in Europe, the spread of Arab terrorism, and the impact of the Jewish state on European life.

Delving into the intimate stories of European Jews from all walks of life, Kurlansky weaves together a vivid tapestry of individuals sustaining their traditions, and flourishing, in the shadow of history. An inspiring story of a tenacious people who have rebuilt their lives in the face of incomprehensible horror, A Chosen Few is a testament to cultural survival and a celebration of the deep bonds that endure between Jews and European civilization.

“Consistently absorbing . . . A Chosen Few investigates the relatively uncharted territory of an encouraging phenomenon.”
–Los Angeles Times

“I can think of no book that portrays with such intelligence, historical understanding, and journalistic flair what life has been like for Jews determined to build lives in Europe.”
–SUSAN MIRON

A half-century after the Holocaust, Paris has again become a major Jewish center, and traditional Jewish life is thriving in Antwerp and Budapest. Jewish communities in Berlin, Prague and Amsterdam, however, are struggling, and Poland is almost devoid of Jewish life. Kurlansky (A Continent of Islands) visited numerous Jewish communities that had been decimated during the war, interviewing camp survivors, rabbis, atheists, professional people, political activists and writers. Stitching together their personal stories with history and reportage, this keenly observant narrative charts a traumatized people's experiences in rebuilding their lives after unimaginable horrors and the loss of their homes and businesses. Many of Kurlansky's respondents voice anxiety over the resurgence of anti-Semitic and nationalist violence.

From Library Journal
Kurlansky (A Continent of Islands: Searching for the Carribean Destiny, LJ 1/92) presents an insightful look at European Jewry today. He has interviewed Jews of all ages and occupations throughout Europe. After the devastation of the Holocaust, it may come as a surprise that Jews continue to live in countries with tragic histories of anti-Semitism. Kurlansky chronicles the determined efforts of these Jews to survive. Europe will never be the focal point of Jewish life as it was before the Holocaust, but Kurlansky shows how Jews are writing new chapters in the European Jewish experience. Indeed, in the democratic countries of Western Europe, Jews can actually thrive. This unusual book is informative and easy to read. Libraries serving Jewish clientele and those seeking to bolster their current affairs section will want to add.

From Kirkus Reviews
A richly descriptive and insightful survey of post-Holocaust European Jewry. Kurlansky (A Continent of Islands, 1992) interviews scores of Holocaust survivors and their children in Germany, Holland, Poland, Slovakia, and other countries to examine how and why Jews still live in Europe. He moves from the end of WW II to the present, showing people just after the war, often in displaced-persons camps, and then later, having survived--opening a bakery in Paris, enrolling in a Jewish school in Budapest, or running a museum in Prague. Kurlansky states that ``Jewry today has a future in Europe, and Hitler at last has been defeated,'' and he gives statistical evidence that European Jewry is rebounding. But the qualitative state of European Jewry remains less clear. Many of the interview subjects have had Jewish identity thrust on them, whether they want it or not, by political opponents or by the biases and prejudices of the majority cultures in which they reside. And the few traditional Jews (in the growing communities of France and the Lowlands) are immigrants from North Africa or Hasidim who have come to ply the diamond trade. Many of the younger people we meet have only been told of their Jewish background when a parent is dying or when a child is found to be on the receiving or giving end of anti- Semitism. Anti-Semitism, in fact, has been a constant over the years, whether it's the rantings of Nazis or the subtle, anti- Zionist sneers of present-day foreign secretaries. This is not a catalogue of fear and shame, however, as Kurlansky, with a novelist's eye for irony and description, offers many moments of transcendence and humor: entertaining culture clashes between communists and capitalists, religious and secular, Zionists and diasporists. The humor darkens when American tourists are greeted at the Warsaw train station with cries of ``Taxi? Hotel? Auschwitz?'' in Poland's new ``world fair of genocide.'' A lively, penetrating follow-up to Holocaust readings that speaks volumes about the resiliency of the Jewish people. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Deserves to Be Widely Read; Kurlansky Should Update It
By Steven G. Barringer
I read this book about a year ago after coming across it in an airport bookstore. It is one of the most interesting books I have ever read, on any subject. I highly recommend the book for anyone that enjoys reading (I consider it one of the most enlightening and enjoyable books I've ever read), but especially for readers that are interested in European history or contemporary Europe, in current events, or in the Holocaust and the history and future of Jewish religion and culture. This is Mark Kurlansky's second published book; he went on to write insanely entertaining books on diverse subjects, including the history of salt (not a joke), the history of cod (also not a joke) and a history of the Basque people.

"A Chosen Few" was especially instructive to me as a primer on how people experienced antisemitism in the 20th Century. I grew up in a place where there were no Jews, and hardly any Catholics. I met my first Jew and first Catholic in college when I was 18 years old. I did not learn about the typical cultural prejudices regarding Jews until I was an adult, and had no opportunity to internalize them. Consequently, the persistent antisemitism of European culture has always been puzzling to me. The more I have learned about the periodic bouts of antisemitism in history -- from the expulsion of Jews from the Rhineland in 11th Century, the plague-related persecution of Jews in the 14th Century, the expulsion from Spain in 1492, to the Holocaust -- the more imponderable the whole subject becomes (though I understand the religious/historical/cultural explanations).

"A Chosen Few" helped me understand the persistence of antisemitism for the first time, in a way that a more typical historical or sociological study could not have done. The author's approach is to recount the experiences of particular people and families in European cities, from Paris to Moscow, from the 1930's to the 1990's. His aim is to explain why some Jews decided to stay on in Europe, either in their prewar towns or elsewhere, and why others emigrated (especially to Israel and North America, or to the Soviet Union). Kurlansky explains who these families were, where and how they lived and what their economic and social situations were in the 1930's as antisemitism was on the rise and Nazi Germany began its invasions and annexations.

This use of anecdote, oral and family history is what makes the book so unique and compelling (an earlier reviewer who described this as a weakness misses the point, in my opinion). These moving personal accounts give poignant insight into the experience of ordinary people whose lives were made extraordinary because of the unspeakable atrocities they endured. The narratives made the mystery of antisemitism more accessible and personal to me -- exactly what I needed to give depth to my knowledge of antisemitism, its roots and its "apotheosis" in the Holocaust (excuse the use of a word with generally positive and religious connotations in other contexts).

I have wondered how any Jew could have decided to stay in Europe after the war, especially in Germany (if he/she had any choice). The book makes these personal decisions understandable in the context of individuals and families, their religion and traditions, and most importantly, what Jewish families lost in the war and what they had left to reclaim afterward. One learns how the few survivors of once-large, assimilated and prosperous German, Belgian and French Jewish families survived the deprivations after the war in refugee camps or on their own, and how relatives found each other in the camps and across the post-war diaspora. The author also recounts the stories of many Jewish families living in Prague, Budapest, Moscow and other places where assimilation was perhaps less possible than in pre-war Germany. Though backgrounds and experience are diverse, consistent themes emerge from the accounts: the (relatively) enlightened policies of many European governments towards Jews in the late 19th and early 20th Century, the persistence(nonetheless)of cultural antisemitism, the intense disruption to generations of Jewish memory and tradition caused by the Shoah, and the difficulty, despite the Holocaust, of leaving ancestral homes forever. The book illuminates the initial attraction of Soviet communism to many Jews, who saw the underlying egalitarian Marxist theory as an alternative to centuries of European and Catholic despotic antisemitism. (On this point, I also differ somewhat with an earlier reviewer who felt that the book does not adequately explain this phenomenon. Kurlansky does not set out to answer this complex question. Rather, he simply recounts faithfully what attracted some Jews to live in Moscow before and after World War II).

Kurlansky, without making the connection explicitly, illuminates how many Polish people relate to Jews much in the same way white Americans relate to blacks. While there is an ugly history (and recurrent threat) of antisemitism in modern Poland, Jewish music and traditions also are very popular, and a part of Polish cultural identity. While thinking about these contradictions, I realized that they are amazingly similar to the schizophrenic relationship of white Americans with black Americans: racism lives on in our society alongside our exaltation of the art and culture of black people. Many of us know Americans who harbor fundamental prejudices against blacks at the same time they enjoy jazz, rap, hip-hop and other uniquely black art forms as essentially American and revere black athletes, actors and entertainers, and hold out these arts and personalities as essentially American. This is one of many insights that can be gained from reading "A Chosen Few," and why I thought it was such a successful concept for a book.

Finally, the book chronicles (ominously) how antisemitism is reappearing across Europe. All educated people should be aware of this phenomenon. As someone who grew up and was educated in the 1960's and 1970's, I learned to believe that the extremity of the Holocaust could never be repeated, that the world community would never again allow organized, state-sponsored persecution of Jews (or of any ethnic, religious or racial group). I lost the latter illusion a long time ago, but still believed until recently that Jews would be specially protected by law and policy, because of how they had been singled out in the Holocaust. "A Chosen Few" helped disabuse me of that final hopeful notion.

Sadly, one realizes from reading "A Chosen Few" that there is something endemic about antisemitism to European culture. Antisemitism reappears despite what has happened to the Jews, and even because of it. It is impossible to be complacent about it, or to be optimistic that antisemitism is a thing of the past. All the more reason for people to read this book. I am amazed that there are not more reviews of "A Chosen Few" on Amazon.com. I attribute this to the fact that it was first published pre-Amazon. This is a remarkable book; it is as enjoyable to read as it is enlightening. From an avid reader, I rank it in my top 30 most memorable books.

I would love to know what happened to these families since 1994 (when the book was first published). Mr. Kurlansky just finished a translation of Zola's "The Belly of Paris." Wouldn it not be a great time to revisit and update these accounts and publish a new version of the book?

Wonderful needed text on oft ignored subject
By Seth J. Frantzman
This is a wonderful book by a great author. It reads like a novel, from character to character from country to country surveying Europe from 1945 to present and the lives of the Jews who remained after the Nazi horror. Looking deeply into the lives of Jewish communities in the eastern block the author illuminates the still struggling Polish community, who suffered anti-Semitism either because they were communists or because they were not, usually simply as an excuse. The author deals with specific individuals and this is probably the greatest flaw of the text. Jews came to the very pinnacles of government in Poland and Czechslovakia(Slansky) and yet these pivotal government officials are all but ignored, because the author concentrates on the everyday lives of Jews who chose to either immigrate to or remain in Europe. So one is found wishing they could read more about Bruno Kriesky the Jew who led Austria in the 70s and was noted for being anti-Israel.
The book is broken up into neat sections detailing the growth out of the rubble of the holocaust, 1968 and the rebirth of European anti-Semitism among other subjects. Good portions are devoted to large Jewish communities in France and Italy. One overlooked community are the Spanish Jews who supported Franco, but otherwise this book is a must read for anyone interested in modern Judaism or post WWII Europe.

We Need To Talk.
By John Spiers
There are many people who view Jews they way they view lawyers: they are all the same. Mark Kurlansky has written a book on the resurrection of Jewry in Europe after the holocaust. One thing you will learn from this book is Jews are not all the same.

Kurlansky along with Spence and Schama are my three favorite writers currently, and all of them are historians. I did not care for history as a topic in school, but then even the Catholic schools were ladeling out tripe when they decided to drink the kool-aid and accept government oversight of Catholic schools. School got boring for Catholics too.

Elsewhere Schama recounts that at a seminar at Balliol College circa 1968 a don suggested to write history about people and not so much events. It has occurred to me that this is the case with all three writers. In A Chosen Few, Kurlansky traces familes in Antwerp, Budapest, Cracow, Paris and North Africa, and at various points in time: prewar, war, post war, and a few points until the 1990s.

Of particular interest to me is how people survive a disaster, what are the best moves, since we too have experienced a disaster, that is the economic boom of the 2000s in USA, when all of that damage was done to our economy. Since we are in the phase where we pay for it, blame is set, and scapegoats are "sacrificed" (a goat is killed ... just who made a sacrifice here?) it is interesting to me the best way to navigate these well trodden paths. Some important points: people generally did not see what was coming. What we think of as a swift disaster in the holocaust unfolded rather slowly. Kurlansky relates frankly how some Jewish elites cooperated with the Nazis, but it did them no good. After the war, escape to Israel was for many worse than staying in Europe since Israel had no economy. Being a Jew in Germany had more opportunites than a Jew in Israel. This is of particular interest to me: for all the vaunted Jewish entrepreneurialism, how come Israel could not survive without massive financial intervention of the communist states (it is undebatable that Israel was a socialist state, certainly at the start.) Is it simply impossible to have a productive economy under socialism? Would Israel have thrived if it had free markets, something it does not have to this day?

For those who wish to believe all Jews are alike, this book shows a distressing range of thoughts and actions by Jews. First there is the argument as to who is a Jew. Is Jewry a race, a nation, a culture? All of the above? Next, is assimilation a good idea, or the maintenance of Jewish identity. If so, what is the Jewish identity? From this uncertain foundation, there is a dizzying array of ideas, actions and even outright antipathy, such as Ashkenazim vs Sephardim.

Although Kurlansky is a Jew himself, he excels at not letting his personal views get in the way of his storytellers. A Jewish informant for the Stasi, who explains she was just building a socialist paradise in East Germany, gets as fair a shake as the Jew who escaped a concentration camp and went on to fight the nazis. Just the facts in this book. Kurlansky is even fair to politicians who have a tin ear to Jewish sensibilities, such as some French polticians.

There may be something unique about Jewish experience, and it is not about Jewish experience per se, but that is about non-Jew reporting thereof. Much is made of gas ovens in concentration camps, but apparently disease was the big killer. This is extremely important information, if true. Another Jewish scholar was looking at the number of six million dead, and comes up with a number of four million, with two million escaped East. The Soviet Union set up a Jewish Autonomous Region in 1934. It still exists... how come we haven't heard anything on this? It leaves it up to Jews to write about Jews, but why? Good scholarship is not something peculiar to Jews. The fact is especially in academia, people are afraid to touch the topic.

The stories that Kurlansky tells, within the narrow bounds of the time and location of his subject, about Jews is so very true about any people at any time. The range of personalities, the ideas, the options, the actions, the motivations.

Something Kurlansky alludes to in this history like Speilberg in Schindler's List, is Jews sell Jews down the river. Perhaps this topic is simply too clear to Jews to bear stating, given that in their bible Cain kills Abel and Joseph's brothers actually do sell Joseph down the river. Perhaps it is too painful, and for a people feeling beset, an obvious lack of unity is too dangerous a notion to allow abroad. When your enemy thinks you are all alike, it is dangerous to let them know that divisions run deep in your ranks. But it seems it is exactly awareness of Jewish divisions that Nazis used so effectively.

Yet people selling their own down the river is nothing new. Japanese sell Japanses down the river, American Americans, Congolese Congolese, Argentinians Argentines, Romans Romans... there is no story to tell in history unless someone sells someone down the river. Jesus and Judas.

Kurlansky is adept enough to flesh out what differences there are, and when people kill over tennis shoes, I suppose these differences can have lethal consequences. So Carmelite nuns put up a convent at Oswiecim, and American Jews (fascinating politics this story) object. American Jews want this killing place left forever a desolate reminder. Christians build a convent on the grounds. Sort of a ground zero mosque story, circa 1995. Yes, Jews tend toward "l'chaim," and Christians tend towards "pray for me." The difference may be religious views, but the fight is politics.

I do recognize the "the Jews" are a favorite topic of wacko-americans, indeed wackos worldwide, and much junk and libel is written about them. But why cede any ground to them? We'll be better off when reticence on certain topics is relieved.

Scene of Crime, by Jill McGown

Real-life crime has engulfed the domestic life of the Riverside Theatre players. For starters, there’s the violent death of Estelle Bignall, the beautiful, neurotic wife of a well-to-do doctor (and aspiring resident playwright). In truth, suicide seemed more Estelle’s line—especially during the Christmas holidays—but a thief saved her the trouble, stealing all the presents and leaving her bound, gagged, and suffocated.

Instinct tells Detective Chief Inspectors Lloyd and Judy Hill that Estelle’s murder is far more complicated. At the crime scene there are too many footprints, too many fingerprints, too much conflicting evidence—and too many suspects: an elusive burglar, a sinister next-door neighbor, the victim’s secret lover, a scared kid with fresh bruises on his face. But which of them was desperate enough to commit murder?

From Publishers Weekly
In her 11th Lloyd and Hill mystery (Verdict Unsafe; etc.), British author McGown provides an expertly crafted whodunit. Judy Hill, a bit cranky in her eighth month of pregnancy and uncertain about Lloyd's willingness to be a father again, ropes her reluctant partner in life and crime into joining her at a rehearsal for a local dramatic society's production of Cinderella. When Lloyd is called from there to the scene of a suspicious death involving the wife of one of the players, the curtain rises on a fascinating domestic drama. Estelle Bignall, apparent victim of a robbery gone wrong, was married to handsome doctor Carl Bignall, who was safely at rehearsal when the call came. Ryan Chester, well known to the local cops as a clever thief, is tied to the scene by the theft of a car and a sackful of Christmas presents from the Bignall house. Ryan's younger half-brother, Dexter, has been spotted running away from the scene of the crime. Sinister next-door neighbor Eric Watson, a former cop, is curiously reluctant to talk to the police. What does he have to hide? Imperturbable as ever, the witty and wily Lloyd, with the able help of his subordinate, Tom Finch, sorts through the maze of conflicting evidence and improbable stories to get to the heart of the matter. Once again, McGown has delivered outstanding entertainment.

From Booklist
McGown produces another winning entry in her long-running Lloyd and Hill series. Detective Chief Inspector Judy Hill, struggling through the last month of what seems an interminable first pregnancy, is temporarily out of commission as far as investigating violent crimes is concerned. Her life partner (and fellow DCI) Lloyd is nervously anticipating fatherhood and facing one of the most puzzling cases of his career. Estelle Bignall has been murdered, smothered to death in what was apparently a burglary attempt gone wrong. The evidence points to Ryan Chester, a petty thief who's had numerous run-ins with the police, but Lloyd isn't buying it. In the end, it's Lloyd's plodding police work that gets him the evidence he needs to crack the case, but it's his sharply honed "cop's sixth sense" that lead him to the real killer. The book suffers from a sometimes confusing surfeit of characters and subplots, but overall, it's an engaging and carefully crafted British police procedural. Emily Melton

Excellent story, characters and plot
By A Customer
In Malworth, a local theater group decides to do a production of Cinderella. At the tryouts is eight-month pregnant Detective Chief Inspector Judy Hill who wants the title role. Accompanying her is her professional and personal partner Lloyd. At the same theater is Dr. Carl Bignall, who learns there that someone murdered his wife during an apparent robbery turned ugly.
The police quickly find two suspects. Teenager Ryan Chester has been found with a stolen car and Christmas gifts that Carl identifies as being in his home. A witness confirms that Ryan's half-brother Dexter was near the crime scene at the time of the murder. The case is resolved so why does Lloyd continue to investigate the homicide as if someone else committed the crime?
The eleventh Lloyd-Hill police procedural, SCENE OF THE CRIME, is a fabulous who-done-it that shows why the author and her series are so popular. The story line is intelligent as the reader observes Lloyd and his assistant work through a maze filled with lies, half-truths, and false clues. The recurring cast retains their human qualities so that fans will feel old friends have returned and anxiously await the next visit from Jill McGown's top of the line series.

Expert Craftsmanship Again.
By Shirley Schwartz
Ms. McGown expertly writes a mystery with more than a few "little puzzles" and red herrings. In this one there have been more people going through the murder scene before the body was officially discovered than people in Piccadilly Circus. Lloyd and Tom Finch must try to wade through all the lies and deceits to get to the heart of the matter, and it turns out that the time line is the way they actually find out who did it. (At least Judy points it out to them). Judy is eight months pregnant in this book, and plays a secondary role in the actual investigation, but that doesn't stop her from breaking through all the lies to get to the heart of the matter. The best thing about a Lloyd and Hill mystery is the ongoing storyline with the principles. Each outing the reader gets to know them better and better - where they begin to feel like old friends. I'm actually sorry that I only have one book left to read in this series. Hopefully Ms. McGown will write again soon.

Love the Lloyd and Hill books by Jill McGown
By K. Kincaid
Love the Lloyd and Hill books by Jill McGown. The stories are literate and realistic without being gruesome. The author's method of presenting alternate theories via the main characters keeps the mystery going until the very end. The characters are wonderfully drawn and believable. A shame that she died so young and that there are not more of her books available from the library in the Kindle format.

A good book with a good plot.

I think this was a good movie turned into a good tv-movie. The only problem I think is that it need a little more information about the Drakh. Give a little more info I what they have been doing for the past 5 years. Still a good book.

Bad choice for a writer
By Night Fly
This only gets two stars because it at least is drawn from a very good tv movie. Otherwise it wouldn't even get that.

While the tv movie was excellent, the book was a disappointment. At least with many of the other novels, you got a richness and added depth to the story - Peter David's work is one great example.

Sheckley, by comparison, adds nothing. I got the impression that he took a script for the movie and just reworked it into a novel. A bit of description here, a line or two there, some, like some bits about the technomages, pilfered straight from the B5 technomage episode, only delivered clumsily as an attempt at narrative exposition.

If anything, it reminded me of when I was an immature kid in jr. high, and pressed for time made the big mistake of copying the World Book description of the brain for a paper, only changing it a little bit to try and call it my own. The result was clearly a poor copy of the original. And so is this book. If he had found a program that could take a script and alter and replace the script directions with "he said"s and reworked descriptions, it couldn't have been any worse.

It might be worth getting if you want to have a full set of B5 books, but I can almost guarantee, you'll only read it once.

Peter David's books, on the other hand, can be read again and again.

The weakest of the B5 movie novelizations
By D. Denesowicz
The only reason I decide to read a movie novelization is to see what additional material(internal dialogue, additional scenes) the author injects into the project. Peter David did a great job with "In the Beginning" of expanding on the film and really giving us material that could've been there if not for time constraints.
Sheckley brings nothing interesting into "A Call to Arms" that enhances the story and much of the inner dialogue doesn't even seem like the characters.
You might as well just watch the movie again if the basic story appeals to you.

Few authors have written more mesmerizingly about Victorian London than Anne Perry. Readers enter her world with exquisite anticipation, and experience a rich variety of characters and class: aristocrats living in luxury, flower sellers on street corners, ladies of the evening seeking customers on gaslit streets, gentlemen in hansom cabs en route to erotic diversions unknown in their Mayfair mansions. Now Perry gives her myriad fans the book they’ve been waiting for—the novel in which William Monk breaks through the wall of amnesia and discovers at last who he once was.

DEATH OF A STRANGER

For the prostitutes of Leather Lane, nurse Hester Monk’s clinic is a lifeline, providing medicine, food, and a modicum of peace—especially welcome since lately their ailments have escalated from bruises and fevers to broken bones and knife wounds. At the moment, however, the mysterious death of railway magnate Nolan Baltimore in a sleazy neighborhood brothel overshadows all else. Whether he fell or was pushed, the shocking question in everyone’s mind is: What was such a pillar of respectability doing in a seedy place of sin?

Meanwhile, brilliant private investigator William Monk acquires a new client, a mysterious beauty who asks him to ascertain beyond a shadow of a doubt whether or not her fiancé, an executive in Nolan Baltimore’s thriving railway firm, has become enmeshed in fraudulent practices that could ruin him.

As Hester ventures into violent streets to learn who is responsible for the brutal abuse of her patients, Monk embarks upon a journey into the English countryside, where the last rails are being laid for a new line. But the sight of tracks stretching into the distance revives memories once stripped from his consciousness by amnesia—as a past almost impossible to bear returns, eerily paralleling a fresh tragedy that has already begun its inexorable unfolding.

Amazon.com Review
Private enquiry agent William Monk is hired to investigate a potential case of fraud in the construction of a new railway line. His client is the fiancée of a man she fears is embroiled in the scheme, and Monk's investigation causes a strange sense of déjà vu--a former policeman afflicted with a case of amnesia concerning his prior life, Monk finds both the case and its milieu unsettlingly familiar. His case is somehow connected to the death of a railway magnate in a sleazy area of London where Monk's wife Hester, a nurse, operates a shelter for abused prostitutes. The women have been doubly victimized by an extortion scheme in which the dead man, who turns out to have been Monk's employer during his "lost" years, may have been involved. More than an ingenious way to fill in Monk's backstory, Anne Perry's newest mystery featuring the enigmatic investigator deepens the reader's understanding of an unusual and compelling protagonist and brings Victorian-era England vividly to life. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Perry's latest novel (after 2001's Funeral in Blue) to feature mid-Victorians William Monk and his wife, Hester, offers an ingenious and baffling plot, compelling characters, both major and minor, plus plenty of courtroom drama, but is something of a diamond in the rough. In London's East End, Hester, a former nurse with Florence Nightingale, has established a shelter for prostitutes where the ill and injured can be treated. One night, a well-known railway magnate is found dead in a nearby brothel, and the police presence in the area grinds the illicit business of the pimps and prostitutes to a halt. William, meanwhile, has undertaken a private investigation into possible fraud. His client, the fiancee of a young executive for the same railway as the murder victim, fears her betrothed may be implicated in the fraud scheme. As William recognizes parallels with the past, memories that he lost in an accident seven years earlier start to haunt him. Unfortunately, the book suffers from hasty execution, as reflected in repetitious phrasing, pronouns with unclear antecedents and confusing narrative transitions between Hester and William and between William in the present and William before his amnesia. The result is a challenging read, though established fans will likely forgive the author her lapses because she tells such a wonderful story.

From Library Journal
A welcome addition to Perry's William Monk mystery series, this book opens with the murder of a wealthy railroad businessman in a brothel. Outraged by the crime, high society pressures the police into cracking down on prostitution. But a police presence is bad for business, and the pimps take out their frustration on the call girls. These battered women seek medical assistance at a Coldbath Square clinic run by Monk's wife, Hester, who believes that solving the murder is the only way to help them in the long run. Meanwhile, a mysterious young socialite asks Monk to investigate her fiance, a partner in a successful railroad company that, she fears, is involved in fraud and corruption. As Monk looks into the matter, he begins to remember things about his own past that might be all too relevant. Perry has written another compelling story of greed, cunning, and passion, featuring characters that readers have come to know and love. Highly recommended for all mystery collections. Anne Perry at her best.
By glenda taylor
I always look forward to a new Anne Perry book. Every one is a winner. This one was no exception. The characters and places were so real I was transported back to Victorian times with them.
William was torn between finding out about about his past and
not really wanting to know. I thought he was a litte in love with Katrina dispite his love for Hester.
Hester was as strong a character as ever, working amongst and helping the prostitutes of London's East End She is determined
to solve the mystery and find the murderer in order to help William.Once again her friend and old suitor Oliver Rathbone came to her aid. This time with a hint of a romance to
come with a colleague of Hester's.
As usual the plot had a few different story lines all coming together as the story unfolded. This was a real nail biter .I cant say I couldn't put it down because actually it was the audio book I listened to. Thanks again to Anne and also to Terence Hardiman for the wonderful way he bought the characters to life. Cant wait for the next one in the series.

Mary, Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley, by Alison Weir

The acclaimed author of The Princes in the Tower now brilliantly investigates another of Britain’s notorious unsolved mysteries: the murder of Lord Darnley, second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Tall, handsome, accomplished, and charming, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, had it all, including a strong claim to the English throne, a fact that threatened the already insecure Elizabeth I. She therefore opposed any plan for Darnley to marry her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, who herself claimed to be Queen of England. But in 1565 Mary met and fell in love with Darnley—and defied Elizabeth by marrying him. It was not long before she discovered that her new husband was weak and vicious, and interested only in securing sovereign power for himself.

On February 10, 1567, an explosion at his lodgings left Darnley dead. There were many who might have had a motive for murdering him, not least Mary herself. The intrigue thickened after it was discovered that apparently he had been suffocated before the blast. Emerging from the tragedy were more mysteries than any historian has ever satisfactorily solved.

Mary and Darnley’s marriage had been an adulterous disaster. After Darnley’s death, Mary showed favor to the powerful Earl of Bothwell, causing her enemies to accuse her of being his partner in both infidelity and murder. Mary insisted that the murder conspiracy had been aimed at her, and that she had escaped only by changing her plans at the last minute. It has even been suggested that Darnley himself had planned the explosion in order to kill her.

The murder of Darnley ultimately led to Mary’s ruin. After her deposition, there conveniently came to light a box of documents—the notorious Casket Letters—that her enemies claimed were proof of her guilt. But Mary was never allowed to see them, and they disappeared in 1584. The question of their authenticity has haunted historians ever since.

After exhaustive reexamination and reevaluation of the source material, Alison Weir has come up with a solution to this enduring mystery that can be substantiated by contemporary evidence, and in the process has shattered many of the misconceptions about Mary, Queen of Scots. Employing once more the bright writing and stunning characterizations that have made her a favorite writer of popular history, Weir has written one of her most engaging excursions into Britain’s bloodstained, power-obsessed past.

From Publishers Weekly
Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), has for centuries fascinated historians and the general public, her life the stuff of Hollywood myth, involving murder, rape, adultery, abdication, imprisonment and execution. In bestselling historian Weir's (Henry VIII, etc.) able hands, we see the young Catholic queen ruling over Protestant Scotland and a group of unruly nobles. Mary's second husband, Lord Darnley, participated in the 1566 murder of Mary's favorite adviser, David Rizzio, after which Mary and Lord Darnley became estranged. Darnley himself was murdered the next year, and some historians have claimed that Mary plotted his death so she could marry her lover, Bothwell. But Weir argues convincingly that the evidence against Mary is fraudulent, part of a coverup initiated by rebellious lords. Weir tells how and why Darnley was killed, and, shockingly, reveals that Bothwell, whom Mary did marry, was one of the murderers. Mary's lords took up arms against her, and she was forced to abdicate, fleeing to England, where she expected her cousin Queen Elizabeth to help her regain her throne. Instead, Mary was held captive for 16 years and finally beheaded for plotting Elizabeth's assassination. Mary could not hope for a better advocate than Weir, who exhaustively evaluates the evidence against her and finds it lacking. Mary's ultimate sin, according to Weir, was not murder but consistently "poor judgment," especially in choosing men. This is entertaining popular history that will satisfy fans of Weir's previous bestsellers. 16 pages of color illus.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Weir, a popular British historian and the author of, most recently, Henry VIII: The King and His Court (2001), visits one of the most intriguing murder mysteries in European history. Mary, Queen of Scots, failed as sovereign of her realm and even failed to save her own life--eventually sent to the executioner's block by her much more practical second cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England. Married as a child to the dauphin of France, Mary was widowed early and, while still only a teenager, returned to rule over her Scottish kingdom, which she had inherited as an infant. Mary then married her cousin Lord Darnley, who was also a cousin of Queen Elizabeth. Handsome but dissolute and insufferably arrogant, Lord Darnley alienated nearly everyone in Scotland, including, very quickly into his marriage, Queen Mary herself. In a plot that was "ill-conceived, careless and staggeringly amateurish," Lord Darnley was murdered, "but the identity of the person or persons responsible is surrounded by great mystery." To this day, establishing the identity of the perpetrator proves difficult, but Weir goes to great lengths to isolate the clues and marshal them into a convincing indictment. No stone is left unturned in her investigation, and despite its detail, her book is as dramatic as witnessing firsthand the most riveting court case. Naturally, much of Weir's focus is on the question of Queen Mary's complicity in her husband's death. The author concludes that the "bulk of evidence against Mary is flawed," and ultimately Mary, Queen of Scots, is to be regarded as "one of the most wronged women in history. " Brad Hooper

Mary, Mary Quite Contrary
By P A Brown
Alison Weir's "Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley" is not the best of her popular histories, but it is still a well-written, copiously researched piece that despite its length goes along at a brisk pace. Weir defends her decision to write a detailed set-up to the murder of Darnley from the outset, and does so in great detail, most of it truly pertinent to the case.
However, what it comes down to -- as it so often does with Mary -- is the question of the Casket Letters. Weir discounts their authenticity vehemently and exonorates Mary of any complicity in her husband's death. This begs the big issue of Mary's character as a ruthless schemer, brought up in Machiavellian France, losing her head over plots against Elizabeth. Weir makes a case here, but does not convince nor provide new interpretations of old evidence.
If you are a Marian, this book will add ample fuel to your fire. If you are not, the last sentence will make you gasp in righteous indignation.
