New York Times Bestseller

When distinguished criminal lawyer Venetia Aldridge defends a young man for the brutal murder of his mother, she views the case as simply another opportunity to demonstrate her brilliance in the courtroom. But within weeks of the trial Aldridge is found dead at her desk, a bloodstained barrister’s wig on her head. And as Commander Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard attempts to make sense of events, the murders continue, inexorably spiraling into fresh complexities of horror.

Amazon.com Review
Although A Certain Justice begins with news of a murder, the victim isn't set to die for another four weeks. Publicly respected but privately loathed, Venetia Aldridge has far more enemies than a brilliant London criminal lawyer should--and at least one of them is determined to do her in. Venetia plies her superior trade in courts that harbor "the illusion that the passions of men were susceptible to order and control," but her past and private life are exceedingly unruly. Her married lover is intent on giving her up; her daughter loathes her; her fellow barristers are determined that she not become the next head of chambers. Even the cleaning women seems to have something on her.

The outline alone of this complex novel would take pages (as would the eclectic inventory of players), but P. D. James makes us admire far more than her brilliantly developed plot. James in fact creates a crowded gallery of surprisingly decent suspects, along with one suitably vile creature--who happens to be Aldridge's last client.

A superior murder mystery, A Certain Justice is also a gripping anatomy of wild justice. James's characters can be overcome by hate, but she is equally concerned with love's manifestations--human, divine, destructive, and healing.

From School Library Journal
YA?Venetia Aldridge, a brilliant barrister, has "four weeks, four hours and fifty minutes left of life." By the time her murder is discovered, readers have not only met most of the suspects, but have also begun to sympathize with whomever might have done her in. Everyone in the victim's life, from her 18-year-old daughter to the retiring head of chambers, from her former lover to the cleaning woman, has cause to have wished her ill. Adam Dalgleish, James's poetry penning sleuth, and his assistants, especially Kate Miskin, investigate the many possible suspects. After much examination of the past and present, the murderer is discovered and A Certain Justice is meted out. As with many of the author's mysteries, psychology and motivation are as important as whodunit and the conundrum presented here is thought-provoking. Much of the action centers around the rebellious daughter and there is a suspense-filled scene in which she and her psychopathic boyfriend try to evade Dalgleish, only to have young Octavia discover that she needs to evade the boyfriend instead. YAs who enjoy James and those ready for a bit of a fright with their English mysteries will surely take to this adventure.?Susan H. Woodcock, Kings Park Library, Burke, VA

From Library Journal
Previously released in unabridged format by Random House and narrated by Michael Jayston (Audio Reviews, LJ 2/1/98), this version features Simon Prebble, the maestro of the audiobook market. In this taut, riveting mystery, Adam Dalgliesh is called in to investigate the grotesque murder of a distinguished Inner Temple trial lawyer. Well-defined and intense personalities of the main characters and knowledge of the British justice system make this latest Dalgliesh novel realistic. It showcases James's ability to portray many diverse characters and keep the listener captivated until the last word. Though either version will be a sure winner with mystery fans, the Recorded Books version is blessed with the talented Prebble.ATheresa Connors, Arkansas Tech Univ., Russellville

The ending is tedious
By Books &Stuff
Five stars for the first half of the book, then three stars until the end which gets two stars because of the drawn out nature of the improbable and less than satisfying ending. I never thought James could be tedious but the last fifty pages bored the whatever out of me. Loved the first half though. Pure James.

Thinking person's Agatha Christie
By D. P. Birkett
It starts off in classical whodunnit style with a nasty person bumped off in posh British surroundings. The PD James gimmick is to probe her characters in depth. You get told about their childhoods (always miserable) and their parents, and in many cases grandparents, and in some cases their greatgrandparents. A lot of London atmosphere and rather too much about architecture. I always have a problem with her dialog. Characters speak in long complete sentences, which is about believable when they are college graduates, but gets to sound odd for demotic speech. An uneducated young criminal speaks about throwing a knife "under a privet hedge" and goes to a "derelict cottage" separated from thr "North Sea" by a "shingle bank." Dalgliesh is a plaster saint. He has no orifices. A thing I've done with some PD James, which will horrify purists, but adds to the enjoyment for me, is to peek at the ending when I/m halfway through. Even if this does spoil it for you there are plenty more PD JAmes's. This is the 14th in the Dalgliesh series alone.

Many layered character study ala P.D. James
By Angie Cross Bly
As are all of P.D. James novels, this is very involved with character development. I felt that the effect s of obsession was the main theme of the novel. Kate's character is further explored. Ms James also delves into the divergent paths taken by Kate and Ash who are born into the same appalling circumstances...Kate becoming a police officer, Ash, a sociopath. The effects of love of all kinds... or the lack of it... is also explored. Dagliesh in this novel does not do much except glue the pieces together. All in all a most fascinating book which is more than an ordinary mystery and happily filled the hours driving a 1500 mile trip.

A Good Collection for Spoken Words
By Kevin Wohler
When I selected Listen Up!: Spoken Word Poetry, I did so simply because it contained a couple of poems by Saul Williams. I'm a fan of Williams's work and pleased to read anything by him. In these pages, I discovered a good collection of other poets inspired by the Spoken Word.
I happen to like Spoken Word poetry, when it's done well. There are posers out there, but some people understand the use of words and the sounds those words make, influencing one another. Williams is particularly adept at this, but I found other poets in this collection that moved me as well.
Willie Perdomo's "Notes for a Slow Jam," Suheir Hammad's "Nother Man Dead," and Ava Chin's "Piano Concerto" are some of my favorites. But it is Williams, in his three part "Children of the Night," that really sold this book for me.
Not every poem, or even every poet, in this collection captures my imagination. Even so, it is a good collection to own, and better to share.

Historical
By A Customer
There are some really good and some really bad actors, comedians, rappers and would be monologuists pretending to be poets in this time of spoken word mania. But this collection actually manages to pull together some young writers who should endure long literary careers of splendor. Unforttunately, I can't say ALL of those included have mastered the art of writing poetry for the page-- Jessican Care Moore is no exception-- but when Tish Benson writes "A blood spillers paradise/this place has made a mockery of spirtual revolution/souls into gravel pits/a heart's identity is no longer revealed thru eyes/or words/or deeds..." or when Carl Hancock Rux writes "At some hour these walls will faint away/when the undaunting command is not forthcoming/and his will to retrieve no longer surpasses his will to resolve/Then in the eviction of diggers, the quake of walls and the death of requests/only the stage this plot of land is heaped upon/will remain...unearthed" or Ava Chin writes "We lie in the tombs of our beds/A Greek chorus/Forecasting rain and shadow and doom/Listening to water through the hole in the drainpipe" I know I am getting a glimpse into the future through the insightful eyes of literary giants.

The rhythm of life danced in words.
By A Customer
If you love poetry, if you love the rhythm of life danced in words, look here. Many of the poets in this book would undoubtedly be more compelling heard live, but three outstanding writers take you inside and outside of yourself--Carl Hancock Rux, a long articulate cry; "The mountains have not known me this way/the tenements with their secret apartments/have never noticed the details of my feet/This is even more than I've ever known about myself/the sound that comes from my throat/when I am surrendering to ocean currents, rejoicing at my endurance." The wit and sensuality of Tish Benson: "I wanna go to the pit of yo soul/afix myself between it and a moon in full bloom/croonin for u like a bayou geechie woman in heat and thankin God/that the world will know what shoulda been all along:/u a bad Boogaloosa Louisiana booga". But for me it is the words of Ava Chin that take me truly away from my own puny thoughts, on trips through generations, conversations with the present and past. Her intelligence and talent make me dizzy. "If I could breathe her in and out of me/would I be able to sew the most intricate garment/with the lightest thread?"

Amazon.com Review
Here's another Star Wars spinoff novel, a brisk and extremely uncomplicated action-adventure romp set on planet Coruscant immediately before the events of The Phantom Menace. After a few setting-up exercises, it's essentially a prolonged chase sequence whose implacable pursuer is Darth Maul--the almost absurdly villainous-looking Sith Lord with the biggest lightsaber and worst makeup job in the entire saga to date.

The plot? Insidiously evil Darth Sidious is poised to launch the Naboo trade blockade featured in The Phantom Menace. But one of his alien henchmen has sneaked away to betray this scheme and must die. So must the traitor's contacts, smalltime crook Lorn Pavan and his uppity droid, I-Five. Likewise Darsha Assant, the female Jedi Knight apprentice who gets entangled with Pavan through either mind-boggling coincidence or the mysterious ways of the Force.

Michael Reaves makes a reasonably slick job of all this nonsense and is not afraid of clichés. Plenty of characters have wooden lines like "I've got a bad feeling about this," and "Too many questions, and not enough answers." Meanwhile in the Jedi council, Yoda makes characteristic remarks: "A good choice he would be... No accident this was."

Unfortunately, the well-known story line of The Phantom Menace defuses suspense in Shadow Hunter. That trade blockade has to happen despite the good folks' doomed heroics, and horrible Darth Maul (already far more powerful and deadly than the puny opposition he faces here) is fated to win out. This novel is for dedicated fans only. --David Langford

Review
"FULL OF LIGHTSABER BATTLES, THE JEDI PHILOSOPHY, AND LOTS OF NEW LIFE-FORMS."
--Chicago Sun-Times

"Reaves writes with a creative flair, allowing readers to experience an almost cinematic sensation as they move through the story. The language is colorful, the action scenes are dynamic, and the dialogue is realistic.... Shadow Hunter is a very good Star Wars novel that reads as easily as a comic book.... Reaves does an excellent job."
--Winston-Salem Journal

Impressive, Most impressive!!!!
By Scott Sloan
Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter was a truly entertaining Star Wars novel. I am not a huge fan of the SW written works, and picked up this book just to see if they had gotten any better. All i can say is that I was happy I did. Reaves gives the reader a deeper insight into the shadowy character of Darth Maul as he sets out upon a mission of the utmost importance for his evil Sith master Lord Sidious. Reaves also introduces us to Lorn Pavan a down-on-his-luck scoundrel of the first degree, I-5 the sarcastic, and nearly sentient 'droid sidekick and one of my favorite characters the young jedi student Darsha Assant. It was so refreshing to see the jedi portrayed in such a young, inexperienced yet focused role. In most of the books they are portrayed as the Know-It-All protectors of the galaxy, and Reaves expresses that through Lorn's intense contempt for the Force Using crime fighters. I loved the back story of Lorn's hatred for the Jedi, and thought that it was explored very well. Darsha is bright, and shining, and made a wonderful addition to the Star Wars universe. Yes the ending of the novel is intense, and dark, but then the good guys don't always win, even in Star Wars. I respect Reaves for having the 'tude to tackle that ending the way he did. BRAVO!! I can go on, but any fan should read this book! It is fresh, new, and exciting, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

Star Wars goes "noir" in gripping "pre-prequel"......
By Alex Diaz-Granados
One of the things I find interesting about the Star Wars prequels is the notion that although most fans know the eventual outcome -- Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is going to declare himself Emperor, Anakin Skywalker will succumb to the Dark Side, and a climactic duel with his friend and mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi will leave Skywalker terribly scarred and transform him into Darth Vader -- the movies (flaws and all) give us the details of the story. To those few fans -- if the reviews of Episodes I and II on this site are a reflection of how many people do like the new movies by George Lucas -- who enjoy The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, the revelations about the decline and fall of the Galactic Republic, the roles, missions, and lifestyles of the Jedi Order, and the tragic transformation of a well-intentioned but vulnerable Jedi into the galaxy's most menacing villain are intriguing.
Because the prequels cover a much longer span of time than the Classic Trilogy and focus mostly on Anakin, his stormy apprenticeship with Obi-Wan, and his forbidden romance with Padme Amidala -- with Palpatine's rise to power as the backdrop -- there are always "untold stories" about the mysterious Sith and the soon-to-be-vanquished Jedi Order. A few details are divulged in the films, such as the Sith being limited to two members -- "a master, and an apprentice." But inevitably running time and other considerations preclude more detailed explanations about Darth Sidious (Palpatine's Sith alter ego) and his sly machinations to defeat the Jedi and take over the decaying Galactic Republic.
Some novelists -- Alan Dean Foster, James Luceno, Greg Bear, and Michael Reeves -- have written an Expanded Universe series of novels that seek to fill in some of the blanks about the prequel era. Bear and Foster, for instance, chronicle some of the events in the decade between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones in Rogue Planet and The Approaching Storm. Luceno and Reeves' novels, on the other hand, are "pre-prequels" set shortly before the events depicted in Episode I.
Whereas Luceno's Star Wars: Cloak of Deception focuses on the political machinations of Palpatine and sets up the downfall of Supreme Chancellor Valorum, Reeve's Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter is a Star Wars film noir-styled mystery set shortly before The Phantom Menace. Darth Sidious and his greedy but none-too-brave Neimoidian allies are planning to blockade the small planet of Naboo to express the Trade Federation's objection to the taxation of trade routes. Everything is going according to plan: the Federation's fleet is preparing to head to the Outer Rim and the Naboo system, the battle droids are hidden in the doughnut-shaped starships' holds, and Sidious' sly maneuvers have thrown the Galactic Senate into a political maelstrom.
But when one of the four Neimoidian conspirators, Hath Monchar, reverts to his species' cowardly nature and flees to the city world of Coruscant, Sidious realizes that he must take decisive steps to prevent the Republic from discovering the Naboo scheme prematurely. Fortunately, he has a powerful asset: Darth Maul, his young, well trained, and formidable apprentice. The horned and tattooed Dark Lord and his double-bladed lightsaber should not have too much trouble finding one scared and desperate Neimoidian, even one hidden among Coruscant's teeming billions.
Reeves, of course, can't change the Star Wars galaxy's destiny and having Maul fail in his mission. He -- and the audience -- knows that the rise of the Sith and the Empire is set in celluloid and print, yet somehow he manages to write a suspenseful tale pitting the relentless Maul (who really got very little screen time in a movie that was heavily promoted with his likeness) against a strange alliance between the cynical rogue Lorn Pavan, a ne'er do well former employee of the Jedi Temple who lives in the fringes of Coruscant society, and Darsha Assant, a young Jedi Padawan on her first mission without her Master's direct supervision. Thrown together by circumstance and pursued by the relentless Darth Maul, these two characters -- and Lorn's sarcastic droid companion I-Five -- prove to be an unexpected challenge to the Jedi-hating Sith Lord.
Reeves' style and tone are similar to Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer stories, albeit set in George Lucas' "galaxy far, far away." The characters are vividly described and are, for a space/fantasy genre novel, engaging and even believable. And even though -- like its film source -- the ending is not a surprise, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter is a fast-paced and entertaining read.

Time to Be in Earnest: A Fragment of Autobiography, by P. D. James

On the day she turned seventy-seven, internationally acclaimed mystery writer P. D. James embarked on an endeavor unlike any other in her distinguished career: she decided to write a personal memoir in the form of a diary. Over the course of a year she set down not only the events and impressions of her extraordinarily active life, but also the memories, joys, discoveries, and crises of a lifetime. This enchantingly original volume is the result.

Time to Be in Earnest offers an intimate portrait of one of most accomplished women of our time. Here are vivid, revealing accounts of her school days in Cambridge in the 1920s and '30s, her happy marriage and the tragedy of her husband's mental illness, and the thrill of publishing her first novel, Cover Her Face, in 1962. As she recounts the decades of her exceptional life, James holds forth with wit and candor on such diverse subjects as the evolution of the detective novel, her deep love of the English countryside, her views of author tours and television adaptations, and her life-long obsession with Jane Austen. Wise and frank, engaging and graceful, this "fragment of autobiography" will delight and surprise P. D. James's admirers the world over.

Amazon.com Review
"At seventy-seven it is time to be in earnest," wrote Samuel Johnson, and bestselling crime writer P.D. James took this maxim as a challenge, setting out to record "one year that otherwise might be lost." The result is a fascinating and reflective account, part diary and part memoir, of one very full year of Baroness James's life, interspersed with her memories and intelligent analysis of "what it was like to be born two years after the end of the First World War and to live for seventy-eight years in this tumultuous century." P.D. James grew up in Cambridge, England, between the wars and worked in the home office of the forensic and criminal justice departments, which sparked her interest in that area, though she did not become a published novelist until 1962 with Cover Her Face. She began to write full-time after her "retirement" in 1979, and along the way became a governor of the BBC before taking a seat in the House of Lords in 1991. Time to Be in Earnest is a lucid and penetrative work by one of the most influential figures currently involved with the arts in Britain. James reveals her vast scope for enjoyment, interest, and simply getting on with life (her husband, Connor White, died at the age of 44 in 1964 after years of mental illness), whether it be spending time with her children and grandchildren, musing on the hideous British architectural mistakes of the 1960s, or giving her view of the controversies continually surrounding the running of the BBC. At an age when many people would be considering slowing down, James seems constantly on the move, recording her day-to-day existence and her past with an alert and judicious eye. "I am sustained by the magnificent irrationality of faith," she states. "I inhabit a different body, but I can reach back over nearly 70 years and recognise her as myself. Then I walked in hope--and I do so still." --Catherine Taylor, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly
James's fans will eagerly devour every word of this insightful and witty account of a year in the life of the master mystery author In the diary she began on her 77th birthday, in August 1997, James comfortably segues from daily activities into reminiscences about her childhood, early forays into writing and her career as a civil servant in Britain. She also weighs in on a variety of subjects, including the movie Titanic (the "usual Hollywood anti-British bias" irritated her), the publishing industry (promising novels are "promoted, packaged, and sold like a new perfume") and London's Millennial Dome, which inspired her "Dome Pome" (which begins, "O Dome Gigantic, Dome immense/ Built in defiance of common sense"). James reveals herself to be proper, dignified and reserved, but she doesn't reveal much more: readers expecting a traditional diary or spilled secrets are bound to be dissatisfied, though they can't say they weren't warned; in her prologue, James announces that she'll neither rehash painful memories nor record "the events of every day." The painful memories no doubt relate to her late husband's long battle with mental illness, which she mentions often but never fully explores. It's just as well she sticks to the latter promise, for while many of her activities will interest a wide range of readers, there are times when her musings do little to contradict her claim that she is simply "an elderly grandmother who writes traditional English detective fiction." 16 pages of photos not seen by PW. 50,000 first printing. From School Library Journal

Adult/High School-Keeping in mind the words of Samuel Johnson, "At seventy-seven it is time to be in earnest," James decided to record feelings and observations about her world from her 77th to her 78th birthday. She wanted to capture the events, thoughts, and emotions of one year not only for her family but also as a record for herself. Much more than an account of day-to-day events though, she gives brief insights into what it was like to grow up in wartime England, her ideas about authors and the craft of writing, and the changes in the treatment of women. Mundane events such as catching the Oxford Tube mingle with more exciting activities such as book signing in Dallas. Readers looking for intimate revelations might be disappointed by the tone of her writing. In the prologue, she says, "There is much that I remember that is painful to dwell upon. I see no need to write about these things." And yet, as she speaks about her husband and his mental illness or the unhappiness of her parents' marriage, she doesn't gloss over some very sad moments. An enjoyable choice for fans of this British mystery writer.-Peggy Bercher, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

A Wonderful Book!!
By A reader
I found this book in my library yesterday and have read it almost non-stop.
It is truly delightful. I like the understated way she weaves her life story. What impressed me most is her down to earth way of saying that she realized that she would have to support her family since her husband was unable to. She just did it without whining or expecting anyone to help her. Her ideas and opinions on the health care system are right on target.
Her references to other works, both hers and other authors, will keep me busy for a long time. I want to check out all of them.
What I envy most is her mention of going here and there to conferences and book signings, etc on the great train system in England. I have spent some time there and know how convenient it is. Wish we had such a rail system in the U.S.
Her thoughts on the writing experience are also informative. Am so glad she has written this book.

A Rare Treat
By Elizabeth skoglund
P.D. James has given her readers a rare glimpse into her thinking. I saw the daily events as ways to connect with what she wanted to say about her beliefs and about her very interesting and productive life. I have read all of her books and was pleased to be able to understand the author behind the mysteries which she so skillfully writes. I also enjoyed her glimpse into a world which is fading fast - a world where character was important and manners counted for a lot.

P.D. James in Her 77th Year
By Patricia Ibbotson
In addition to being one of the best contemporary mystery writers, P.D. James has an extraordinary command of the English language. Her book, a combination diary of her 77th year and a reflective looking back, is a must read for her fans. Some parts relating to her personal life, such as having a baby while bombs were being dropped during World War II and her relationship with her cat Polly-Hodge, make for interesting reading. Other parts about the more technical aspects of book writing and publishing, with the exception of her comments about adapting her books into TV movies, tend to be dry and would hold more appeal to writers and those in the publishing business.

The Real James Herriot: A Memoir of My Father, by James Wight

No one is better poised to write the biography of James Herriot than the son who worked alongside him in the Yorkshire veterinary practice when Herriot became an internationally bestselling author. Now, in this warm and poignant biography, Jim Wight ventures beyond his father's life as a veterinarian to reveal the man behind the stories--the private individual who refused to allow fame and wealth to interfere with his practice or his family. With access to all of his father's papers, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs--and intimate recollections of the farmers, locals, and friends who populate the James Herriot books--only Jim Wight could write this definitive biography of the man who was not only his father but his best friend.

Another Treasure For My Herriot Collection
By LINDA MATTHEWS
I waited eagerly for 8 months to receive this book, then I had to wait another week before I could open the pages without weeping. The first two paragraphs in the Prologue are enough to set me off: "On that day a great friend had died. His name was James Alfred Wight, a father in whose company I had spent countless happy hours. A man I shall never forget."
We have all lost a great friend in Alf Wight. How many countless happy hours have we spent with James Herriot, either in books or TV shows? Indeed none of us will ever forget him. I wish I had been able to meet him.
I would like to thank Jim Wight personally for writing this book. He expresses his first feelings of misgiving about trying to live up to his father's excellent writing, but he need not have worried. He tells about a boyhood friend of Alf's who jumps out of a second floor window with an umbrella. "The old umbrella suddenly turned inside out and, accompanied by the screaming boy, zoomed to the ground." This could have come straight off James Herriot's pen.
Alf Wight had a huge heart, and it seems that his son does, too. It is clear that he misses his father terribly. He presents Alf as a perfectly ordinary person who was astonished at his own fame, and who still remained "99% vet." This book shows the good and the bad of Alf Wight, his family and his friends. And yet I came away still in love with Siegfried, Tristan, and all the rest. And still totally devoted to James Herriot.
Thank you, Jim.

A Touching Memoir
By A Customer
For those of us who grew up watching ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL on PBS and who delighted in James Herriot's books, this biography of Alf Wight, the real name of the writer James Herriot, is fascinating, heart-warming, and wonderful.
What makes this book so good is that the author is Jim Wight, Alf's son and later partner in his vet practice. Jim describes Alf's life with real insight and shares his own opinions when discussing key characters in Alf's books. Jim talks about Donald and Brian, the real people behind Siegfried and Tristan, and the various farmers and family members with definite love; he knew them and worked with them, too.
This book is not just a collection of facts; it is a real tribute to the life of the man known to most of us as James Herriot. Jim's insights into his father and his life are extremely interesting, and the gentleness of his father's writings has surely filtered down to his son. Certainly, Jim writes critically, but he also writes with affection and understanding.
I cannot think of a more fitting memoir for Alf Wight. His vision of the world is unique, and his son's tribute to him, both a biography and a personal memoir, could not be better. Through Jim's book, we can see just how true Alf's descriptions are - and how lucky we are to have them.
I definitely recommend this book to all fans of James Herriot.

Heartwarming tribute from a son to his father
By a-wish-upon-a-star
If you have read and enjoyed the "James Herriot" books, like I did, you will enjoy this intimate biography of the real James Herriot, Alf Wight, written by his son.

Although I have read all his books, I never thought too much about the real man behind them, but reading "The Real James Herriot" has a awakened a tremendous appreciation for one of my favorite authors. Too often after reading a biography of one of my favorite authors I found that their lives did not quite measure up to their books, but with this author I found quite the opposite, I found myself in awe of this modest and unassuming man.

My first reaction upon finishing this book was how unusually nice it is for a son to write so well of his father, and it certainly made me stop and think about my relationship with my own children. What greater tribute can a person have that his children should think so highly of them, should write with such love and devotion about a parent? How rare it is today (or at least psychologists would have us believe that it is rare) for a son to follow in his father's profession, working in the same practice, living just miles away, with hardly an unkind word for his father?

This book is an anti-dote for all those "dark" books, where the worst of human nature is emphasized again and again, and it is refreshing to read about a "normal", happy person, with a devoted wife and family, a humble and modest man who succeeded in life beyond his wildest dreams. A man who, upon making millions when his books hit the bestseller list, refused to change his lifestyle one iota, preferring to continue in the vocation and place (the Yorkshires) he loved rather than turn into one of the "rich and famous". Who, as someone who had idealized the beautiful Yorkshire country in his books, was someone who actually lived the way he wrote - why go on vacation, when I have everything I could want, right here?

A beautiful biography of a wonderful person, and highly recommended for anyone, especially a "James Herriot" fan.

There Will Never Be Another You: A Novel, by Carolyn See

“Carolyn See has written a novel alive with wit and love and energy–a book about things falling apart that turns out to be a day at the beach. . . . Pure joy.”–Joan Didion

Accomplished author Carolyn See triumphantly returns to fiction–seven years after her last novel was published–with this provocative, vibrantly written new novel. Set in a security-obsessed world that eerily mirrors our own, There Will Never Be Another You captures the paranoia and propaganda of a volatile time and place in which humanity’s divisions run deep and society sits on edge–and one Southern California family faces profound crises from within and without.

It is a moment in the near future when the global threat of terror has cultivated rage, apathy, and panic across the country. People fear that “anybody could be armed, or have a bomb. Or a disease. Or all three.” For Phil, a dermatologist at the UCLA hospital, it is a time of unease and uncertainty, in stark contrast to the days when he coasted through life on his good looks, a modicum of charm, and only haphazard effort. Now Phil must deal with his mother, Edith, who’s been grieving over the death of her husband for several years and only recently has thought to reconnect with a family that seems to have other priorities. Phil’s energies are already divvied up among his belligerent children, his wayward wife, and his unreliable mistress.

Then Phil’s life takes a dramatic turn: He is recruited for a top-secret team whose task is to act quickly in the event of a biological or chemical attack. The assignment just may provide him with a renewed sense of purpose. Yet dire circumstances force Phil to make profound decisions that will affect not just himself and his loved ones but the entire country. It is a chance for an ordinary man to rise from mediocrity to heroism–and at which failure would prove to be catastrophic.

Foreboding and all too plausible, There Will Never Be Another You is a cautionary novel of family and society, where a naïve past is replaced by a menacing future in which distinguishing between reality and imagination proves to be more challenging than ever.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in Los Angeles of the immediate future and infused with the anxieties of the present, See's potent new novel articulates the instinctive, human impulse toward connection in the face of mortality. The story centers on the UCLA medical center, where cosmopolitan, twice-widowed Edith volunteers, and where her bewildered dermatologist son, Phil, has his practice. Phil is unhappily married to the disgruntled Felicia and clueless about how to help their troubled prepubescent son or relate to their imperious teenage daughter. Edith tries repeatedly to begin her life again, but despairs of new relationships with "death all around." See also follows the love story of UCLA students Andrea Barclay, whose father's kidney is failing (and whose mother is Edith's confidant), and Danny Lee, whose large Chinese-American family gathers to support a dying uncle. Andrea and Danny's headlong romance contrasts with Phil and Felicia's unraveling marriage; the former's cultural differences become part of the point. And Phil becomes part of a bioterrorism response team; the fracturing and coalescing relationships mirror the drama of a possible epidemic as See's utterly believable characters fumble for love and meaning. From Booklist
*Starred Review* This novel starts out as a curiosity, takes a turn into something perplexing, but ends as an artistic and soulful master achievement. The well-respected author sets her tale in the near future, and "the war" in which the U.S. has been involved for several years continues to be waged (which war is no mystery despite being unidentified). Terrorism against the U.S. eventually assumes the form of environmental disaster. But, unusual for a "forecast" novel, this one eschews any what-will-technology-come-to-look-like gimmickry; emphatically, this is no spy thriller. Phil Fuchs is a physician affiliated with UCLA hospital; his wife is unhappy, and his kids are a mess. He seems to be just surfing through his life. His mother is recently widowed and unsettled. But Phil has to snap-to when, first, he is called on to participate in a top-secret emergency-response unit and then must face the breakup of his marriage. A secondary storyline seems unattached to the main one at first, but soon See's tight control over all the plot elements becomes obvious. The novel's deep resonance lies in her imaginative yet meaningful juxtaposition of global issues and domestic ones: crises in the former can connect with, influence, and even determine the outcome of crises in the latter. Pure Magic
By Clancy OHara
See can write about LA like no other writer. The layering of lives and the magic of living in an insane place like LA is central to this book. If you read Golden Days and liked it then you will love this one too. She is at the top of her form here. Her books always give me the feeling, that no matter how hard life is, that something really wonderful can always happen. Full of craziness and end of the world dread and most of all....hope. You will love this book. Clancy

There has never been another Carolyn See
By readernyc
This book is up there with the late Carol Shields "Unless." I just got it, the day it came out, and have read it three times and all my friends love it as well.

Why so great? It's pace is pitch perfect, the various voices work wonders and the ending is so gorgeous it blew me, a writer too, away. In addition, See is hilarious, generous, and writes as if it is easy, which we authors know is not so.

I don't think anyone here wouldn't simply LOVE this book. Go, Carolyn See, may you have great success with this masterpiece filled with love, prophecy, sadness and most of all, somehow you managed to be hilarious all the way thru.

You are my ideal writer. Thank you so much.

There Will Never Be Another Now
By Kenneth Funsten
Smart, sophisticated and true-to-life in its treatment of characters' inner voices, See's narrative is a model of brevity and concision. There is a mood of wistfulness evident, for life in general and for these lives in particular. The opening's nostalgic mood reminds of Chris Isherwood's great A Single Man, while the story line of an epidemic that never quite arrives can't help but bring back a few flashes of DeLillo's White Noise.

But the tour-de-force is the linking together of the very sensitive scenes with kids, grandkids, couples both young and not so young, of characters of all ages in fruitless struggle and showing hopeless strength against the slow but inevitable pace of existence. What is past has really passed, See is saying. The foreboding sense of a passing plague, the sense of a passing end to things, these characters' angst embodying their sensitivities as each one must decide what to save of his/her life, what to try and take as each passes through the present.

As a father, I couldn't help but make my hero Edith's son Phil. That choice for me made Carolyn See's There Will Never Be Another You the perfect story of a father's responsibility--a "guy" book even. No matter age or gender, this book is a gift.

You Remind Me of Me: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle), by Dan Chaon

With his critically acclaimed Among the Missing and Fitting Ends, award-winning author Dan Chaon proved himself a master of the short story form. He is a writer, observes the Chicago Tribune, who can “convincingly squeeze whole lives into a mere twenty pages or so.” Now Chaon marshals his notable talents in his much-anticipated debut novel.

You Remind Me of Me begins with a series of separate incidents: In 1977, a little boy is savagely attacked by his mother’s pet Doberman; in 1997 another little boy disappears from his grandmother’s backyard on a sunny summer morning; in 1966, a pregnant teenager admits herself to a maternity home, with the intention of giving her child up for adoption; in 1991, a young man drifts toward a career as a drug dealer, even as he hopes for something better. With penetrating insight and a deep devotion to his characters, Dan Chaon explores the secret connections that irrevocably link them. In the process he examines questions of identity, fate, and circumstance: Why do we become the people that we become? How do we end up stuck in lives that we never wanted? And can we change the course of what seems inevitable?

In language that is both unflinching and exquisite, Chaon moves deftly between the past and the present in the small-town prairie Midwest and shows us the extraordinary lives of “ordinary” people.

From Publishers Weekly
Three lives viewed through a kaleidoscope of memories and secret pain assume a kind of mythical dimension in Chaon's piercingly poignant tale of fate, chance and search for redemption. As he demonstrated in his short story collection Among the Missing, Chaon has a sensitive radar for the daily routines of people striving to escape the margins of poverty and establish meaningful lives. Here, a woman's unsuccessful effort to rise above the pain of giving away an illegitimate baby, and to fight against mental illness and offer love to a second child, blights all their lives. Living with his harsh and bitter mother, Norma, and his kindly grandfather in Little Bow, S.Dak., young Jonah Doyle is permanently scarred after the family's Doberman attacks and maims him. The resulting livid ridges on his face are the outward manifestations of a deeper wound that will always haunt him. After his mother's suicide, Jonah sets out to find the older brother he has never met, and in the process, brings them both to the verge of tragedy. Jonah's older sibling is Troy Timmens, a well-meaning bartender and sometime drug dealer in St. Bonaventure, Nebr., who is devoted to his six-year-old son, Loomis. The boy will play a pivotal part in Jonah's quixotic attempts to win Troy's love. Chaon structures his plot in alternating flashbacks, and the fragmentary time structure forces the reader to puzzle out the relationships and contributes to rising dramatic tension. Chaon's clarity of observation, expressed in restrained, nuanced prose, coupled with his compassion for his flawed characters, creates a heart-wrenching story of people searching for connection.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–This first novel focuses on the disparate lives of a fragmented family as they struggle with the harsh realities of poverty, depression, and dysfunction. The story opens with Jonah, a troubled, self-involved boy in a small South Dakota town. Raised by a depressed and suicidal mother who never wanted him, he survives an attack from the family's Doberman only to be severely scarred on his face and hands. Jonah develops into a lonely and isolated man who tries to make connections with anyone willing to befriend him, only to push others away by eventually demanding more than they want to give. Driven by his need for acceptance, Jonah seeks out an older half brother who was given up for adoption at birth. Troy, a bartender and occasional marijuana dealer, has difficulties of his own: shortly after the disappearance of his wife, he is arrested and placed on probation and house arrest for drug dealing. He struggles to regain custody of his son, Loomis, a strangely intelligent and watchful boy, from his uncooperative mother-in-law and has little time for the hopeful Jonah. In what he intends as a gesture of brotherly friendship, Jonah kidnaps Loomis, meaning to take the boy to Troy. This desperate act ultimately leads to the dramatic yet real conclusion. A series of tightly interwoven flashbacks; deft handling of structure; and simple, precise language transform these characters' lives into a story that is highly readable, thought-provoking, and profoundly moving.–Matthew L. From Bookmarks Magazine
Already recognized as a gifted short story writer, Chaon has been compared to such luminaries as Ambrose Bierce, Shirley Jackson, and Russell Banks. In crafting his first novel, Chaon’s short story sensibility pops up from time to time, particularly in the pacing and fragmented structure. Yet despite its jumpiness, the structure remains tightly focused on the characters. Chaon remains, both as a novelist and short-story author, an illuminating, haunting, and inquisitive writer. His skillful narration always centers You Remind Me of Me on two things: the search for family and, just as importantly, the accompanying search for self.

Reconciliation
By kjgrow
Looking at the other reviews here, I see that readers are either falling all over themselves or reacting very negatively to this book. Clearly, this is a novel that provokes strong feelings in people. So instead of gushing about the prose (which I do think is poetic and lovely) or railing on the characters (which are, for the most part, miserable... but some people like that kind of thing), I thought I'd try to identify some of the elements of this book that readers might find either enriching or problematic.

1) Structure - Dan Chaon is first and foremost a short story writer, and this comes through quite clearly in this book. Much like an Arriaga screenplay (21 Grams, Amores Perros) the chronology and cast of characters are fragmented and require a bit of piecing together in the beginning. In fact, I kept a timeline for the first ten chapters just to keep myself straight. While some people may enjoy this puzzle, others might find it gimmecky and unnecessary and not have the patience to continue reading.

2) Predominace of storytelling by way of characters' interior -

One reviewer I believe called this novel "claustrophobic", which I think is a pretty apt word. This is not a novel of plots and dialogues - most of the story is revealed through the memories and thoughts of a variety of characters. Very little happens directly in this novel, resulting in a sort of slowness, or lack of immediacy. Here again, some readers will savor this richness and pace, and others will find it aggrivating.

3) Tendancy toward melodrama and sentimentality - Remember the books in the first round of Oprah's book club (Jane Hamilton, Wally Lamb, etc.)? This book is ripe for this audience. This can be a very dark book, seemingly hopeless at times. But it is a perspective that many people find truth and redemption in. For others, this way of looking at the world is pessimistic and depressing.

All said and done, I did enjoy this book, and my book group had a very long and involved discussion about it. I can't say that I'm going to run out and buy the rest of Chaon's work, but I do give him credit for being a gifted and unconventional writer that seems to be resonating with many, many people.

For a book with similar themes, but a different edgier approach, try Eliot Perlman's Seven Types of Ambiguity.

It Reminds Me Of "Masterful"!
By Jill I. Shtulman
This book was extraordinary...a book that revived my faith that the novel is here to stay. The theme -- in Chaon's own words: "How can you be alive when every choice you make breaks the world into a thousand filaments, each careless step branches into long tributaries of alternate lives, shuddeing outward and outward like sheer lightning."

That's solid writing by a master in control of the process. The novel is, ultimately, about choices and alternate lives: what would happen if you were born to a different mother? If you'd grown up in a different place? If you had some kind of proof that you were unlucky? These are questions that we all wrestle with at some point in our lives; Jonah more than most.

There is ample foreshadowing that "something is wrong with Jonah": his child demeanor, the way he deals with the dog Rosebud as an adult, his own lack of involvement at the time of his mother's death. It is inevitable, then, that his appearance in Troy's life will eventually create what appears to be a crisis.

Each character is carefully drawn, even the minor ones. I could picture each one -- the twitches, the yellowing sheets, the gnarled hands, and most of all, the scar which, of course, is symbolic of the schism that runs through Jonah's life.

I highly recommend this novel!

Skillfully Crafted
By Ondre
A very touching book. So well written. I'm thoroughly impressed, as are many others, obviously. A few seem to want to slight this novel, but I can't help thinking they don't fully understand how difficult a book like this is to write. Chaon makes it look easy, really, and that's a trick of enormous skill. This novel could have seemed fragmented, but I don't think it does because each different time and location that he drops us into he creates completely. He grounds us on each page. Each line and scene is so complete that there is very little that's fuzzy or unclear about this. Complex, challenging, yes - but unclear or fuzzy, definitely not.
Some reviewers have complained about the characters, but I think that's another strength of the book. Chaon has such empathy and understanding for his characters that they're compelling despite their obvious flaws. Yes, their decisions can be pathetic and painful and damaging, but people make decisions like that. Just because it can be difficult to read at times doesn't mean we shouldn't examine such characters, the lives they lead and the decisions they make. Personally, I feel for them all. I'm glad to have this time with them. I've more compassion and interest in adoption, and more appreciation of the family I have around me. Altogether, I learned from this book and enjoyed the writer's skills on every page. I highly recommend it.
