The Evolution of Fatherhood: A Celebration of Animal and Human Families, by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson

Inspired by the wonder of his own experiences as a parent, former psychoanalyst and New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Masson offers a remarkable look at one of the most fulfilling roles in the animal world: fatherhood. In The Evolution of Fatherhood, he examines the extraordinary behavior of outstanding fathers, heroes among animals, including: the male emperor penguin, who incubates the egg of his young through Antarctic blizzards; prairie dog dads, who teach their pups to play; the South American tamarin monkey, who “coaches” his mate through labor and delivery; and the wolf—and why wolves make good fathers, whereas their close relatives, dogs, don’t. With captivating writing and impeccable research, Masson celebrates the unique and often surprising role that males play in the lives of their young.

Masson also looks at nature’s worst fathers: lions, langurs, bears—and humans. He shows that when a father cares for his young, as does the beaver, we immediately look for a biological, and not an emotional, explanation. But Masson demonstrates that for these animals fatherhood is a profound, all-encompassing experience. Compelling and inspirational, The Evolution Of Fatherhood is a book that will forever change our perceptions of parenthood and family love.

A True Celebration
By C. McCAIN
I fell in love with Jeff Masson again!

I thought no book, his or any other author's, would move me as WHEN ELEPHANTS WEEP did too long ago. I marked so many pages, read and reread this one that I might need to get another copy. The beauty of his writing and his love for this topic shines so clearly throughout this book.

I can only imagine the research he has done. How does he share every story as if he were there with the Emperor penguin father who incubates the egg for 65 days while mom goes for food or with the wolf dads who are so important to the survival of their species.

I wanted to apologize to my male dog because, as Masson writes, we humans have domesticated fatherhood out of our dogs, Of course, there's only one leader of the pack.

What an experience! Thank you, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson! Please never stop writing.

Funeral in Blue (William Monk Novels), by Anne Perry

In her haunting new Victorian novel, Anne Perry brings to rich and passionate life the city that she has made her own. Once more she shares the intimacy of London's opulent drawing rooms and guides readers through gaslit thoroughfares that echo with hooves on cobblestones, the cries of street vendors, the shouts of newsboys reporting the headlines . . . of two beautiful women found strangled in the studio of a well-known London artist. One of the victims is the wife of Hester Monk's colleague, surgeon Dr. Kristian Beck, a Viennese emigre who swiftly becomes the principal suspect. Now investigator William Monk and his wife seek evidence to save Beck from the hangman, hoping to penetrate not only the mystery of Elissa Beck's death, but the riddle of her life. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
From the enormously popular and hard-working Perry comes her 11th Victorian mystery featuring Hester and William Monk, to the certain delight of her faithful admirers. In the studio of a London artist, two women have been murdered, one of them the wife of Dr. Kristian Beck, a physician from Vienna with whom Hester's dear friend, Lady Callandra, is secretly in love. When Beck is charged with the murder, Callandra enlists the aid of Hester and William. Neither of the Monks fits tidily into polite society. William, a former policeman now working as a private enquiry agent, has no memory of his life before a serious injury five years ago; it may partly explain his cantankerous personality. Hester, a nurse who served under Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War, is outspoken, courageous, passionate, independent and stubborn not exactly your typical subservient Victorian gentlewoman. Indeed, a common theme for Perry is spotlighting the social ills of 19th-century England, particularly the treatment accorded to women. Here she layers a new evil into the plot: anti-Semitism, widely accepted then and a haunting precursor of ugliness to come. The author excels at re-creating the ambience of 1860s London streets, but stumbles in plot cohesion, succumbing at the last moment to out-of-left-field syndrome. Throughout, the key characters engage in a great deal of inner reflection made ponderous by wordiness and repetition. No doubt Perry's myriad fans won't care a whit. (Oct. 2)Forecast: The sample chapter included in the mass market edition of Slaves of Obsession, featuring Thomas and Charlotte Pitt from Perry's other Victorian series, will help fuel this novel's surefire sales.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-William Monk and his wife Hester become involved in a murder investigation when their friend Lady Callandra Daviot asks them to help prove the innocence of her distinguished colleague, whose wife was one of the victims. The action moves from London to Vienna and deals with such issues as anti-Semitism and religious and intellectual freedom. The details of Victorian London are essential to the atmosphere of the book and help advance the story as the two search for the killer. Perry is so masterful at setting the scene that readers can picture the fog rolling in along the river, smell the stench that rises from the gutters, and hear the hooves of the horses as they plod along the cobblestone streets. A secondary plot concerns the inner turmoil that Monk experiences as he joins forces with Runcorn, commander of the Totem Court Road police station and an old adversary. When Monk travels to Vienna to interview people who knew Kristian Beck and his wife, he finds treachery, deceit, and long-buried family secrets. Will the devastating information that Monk uncovers be enough to save Beck's life? This is the issue that heightens the suspense throughout his murder trial. Teens who enjoy Victorian murder mysteries with lots of atmosphere will have no problem delving into this one.

From Library Journal
In her latest William Monk novel after Slaves of Obsession, Perry presents another gripping Victorian spellbinder. The strangulation murders of Elissa Beck, the wife of prominent Viennese surgeon Kristian Beck, and Sarah Mackeson, an artist's model found together in a well-known painter's empty studio lead to a series of bizarre discoveries. The prime suspect is Kristian. Investigator William Monk and his wife, Hester, probe the crime out of duty and friendship toward both Kristian and Lady Callandra Daviot, who works at the hospital and hides a love for the surgeon. Callandra dispatches Monk to investigate Kristian, his wife, and their friend Max Niemann, all during the Vienna uprising of 1848. When Kristian comes to trial, his father-in-law, the distinguished Fuller Pendreigh, volunteers to defend him; the final courtroom scenes bring all the characters together. Perry's deep, sympathetic characterizations help cement the complex plot, as she explores Victorian class distinctions, hypocrisy, duty, and morality. Highly recommended for all mystery collections.

Funeral in Blue -- Nice Try
By P A Brown
Coming directly on the heels of the maddeningly bad "Slaves of Obsession," "Funeral in Blue" does a little something to improve Anne Perry's much-damaged reputation. The former book was so poor it was impossible to imagine that she was really paying attention while writing it. This new book offers some promise that Ms. Perry is working harder at her usually excellent series of Victorian mysteries. While a trifle sloppy in plot and in need of some firm editing, "Funeral in Blue" does further develop the (somewhat annoying) characters of Hester and William Monk, and I liked the fact that the entire ending leaves so many loose ends and a promise of further exploration of Monk's lost past. Perhaps Ms. Perry would be better off writing more slowly and carefully, if only to reach the heights she has obtained in the past.

Changes in William Monk
By J. Huber
I've always felt Monk to be not a very likable hero. This book finds him wondering about his past before his accident and subsequent memory loss. He also is patching up some old problems with his former boss. I liked this book because it had both an interesting mystery to solve and it made both Hester and William Monk more human, less damaged by their pasts. As usual the solution of the murder is the weakest part of the story. The journey thru an England and in this case an Austria of Victorian time is the best part of the book.

Finally good Peanuts-strips collections !
By marc de lint
It is hard to believe that the most popular comic strip characters in the history have been treated so wrongly in the past. You could buy tons of merchandising, but the true essentials, being the strips themselves, were published at random... until now !!! Thank God that this editor is publishing complete and chronological runs !!! A full year per book, and the "sundays" in colour : what else do you need ?
I only regret that only 2 books are published every year : at this rate it will take 25 years to complete this edition !

From Publishers Weekly
The devastating effect of WWII on two Hawaiian families pervades this haunting novel that spans three continents and decades. Davenport (Shark Dialogues) traces the stories of Sun-ja Uanoe Sung (Sunny), a Hawaiian/Korean student from an educated family, and Keo, a native jazz musician, who meet and fall in love in Honolulu in the mid-1930s. When Keo (sometimes known as Hula Man) gets a chance to travel with a jazz band, he leaves Sunny for New Orleans and Paris. His reputation as a genius hornblower blossoms as quickly as racist violence darkens Nazi-infested Europe. Sunny escapes her fractured family life in Honolulu and journeys to join Keo in the City of Light. She revolts against the Nazi brutality she finds there, worrying also about the fate of her clubfooted sister, Lili, who was cast out by their father before Sunny was born. Arriving in Shanghai to look for Lili, Sunny is kidnapped and held captive as a "P-girl," servicing Japanese soldiers. Sunny is selected by one officer for proprietary use; her harrowing plight and that of thousands of other women and girls (some prepubescent) are described in searingly graphic detail. After the war, these women (who've aged several decades for every year of captivity) are too traumatized and ashamed to aid the Allies' feeble attempts at prosecution. There seems to be no real recovery from this level of atrocity, and Keo's story cannot equal Sunny's in intensity. After the war, Keo continues to search for Sunny, mourning and playing music. While the novel's nonsequential structure feels disjointed early on, it gains focus and power as Sunny's story unfolds. In the political maneuvering for Hawaii's statehood in 1959, the two families, bearing their emotional and physical scars, find some form of healing. Davenport's prose can verge on the purple, especially when describing Keo's musical artistry, yet overall she tells a powerful tale of love and loss. (Aug.) FYI: Davenport grew up in Honolulu, the daughter of a native Hawaiian whose ancestors were Tahitians, and a U.S. sailor from Alabama.

From Library Journal
Hawaiian-born Davenport's new novel continues the forceful and lush yet unromanticized depiction of her native islands that characterized her debut, Shark Dialogues (LJ 4/1/94). Though Davenport reintroduces Pono, the kahuna or seer who dominated Shark Dialogues, star-crossed lovers Keo and Sunny are the heart of Song of the Exile. Keo, a talented jazz musician, leaves home and family to pursue his musical obsession. Sunny follows him to Paris, but the horrors of World War II separate them. Sunny eventually suffers the fate that thousands of women endured as "comfort women," or forced prostitutes for Japanese soldiers. Davenport's scope broadens to cover Keo's family, the Meahunas, but the suffering, tragedy, and survival of these lovers remain the haunting, mesmerizing centerpiece. This should join other Hawaiian fiction on library shelves, including Nora Okja Keller's Comfort Woman (LJ 1/97) and Sylvia Watanabe's Talking to the Dead (LJ 8/92). Recommended.AFaye A. From Booklist
Davenport weaves the history and culture of Hawaii, the U.S., Europe, and Asia, from the period just before World War II to Hawaii's statehood, into the restless search for self-discovery of her unforgettable characters. Keo is Hawaiian born, but he is deeply stirred by the allure of jazz, what one character calls "the tongue of the exile." Talented enough to be invited to join a band in New Orleans, Keo strikes out, leaving behind Sunny, an ambitious young woman bent on saving her mother from an abusive marriage and rescuing a sister abandoned in Korea. The lovers are rejoined in Paris in 1939, at a time when Americans are headed home. The war and their divergent drives separate Keo and Sunny and send them on a lifelong search to regain what they've lost: for Keo, his sense of family and of himself as a Hawaiian; for Sunny, the humanity lost during her brutal internment as a "comfort woman" in the Japanese war camps. Davenport writes profoundly of human relationships, lyrically of jazz, and insightfully of racial issues in this incredible novel. Vanessa Bush

A haunting tale of a dark time in history
By Linda Linguvic
To Kiana Davenport's credit, she didn't try to recreate her former book "Shark Dialogues" and moved on instead to break new ground.
The story starts during a time of innocence for Hawaii, shortly before WW2 and extends through the time of statehood in the 1950s. This is more than just the story of Hawaii, however. It is the story of a native Hawaiian jazz musician, Keo, who travels to New Orleans, Paris and then Shanghai, and finds himself in a brutal Japanese prison during the war. It is also the story of Sunny, his Korean-Hawaiian girlfriend, who finds herself a Japanese "comfort woman".
The author doesn't spare the reader the horrors of the war. Her searing words shed light on this dark time in history with an intensity that made me shudder with its graphic violence and unremitting horrors. Over and over the reader experiences the starvation, disease, pain and physical and mental deterioration of people who are forced to live in unspeakable conditions where human endurance under such circumstances is tested to the limit.
Woven throughout the plot is the story of their families, life in Hawaii, and the spirituality of the Hawaiian people. The reader also feels the cadence of Hawaii and the magic in her words as she describes Keo's music.
I would have liked this book to be lighter. I would have liked to smile rather than cringe at the unrelenting horror. I would have liked a happier ending. But that is not the story that the author wanted to tell. And so I accept it on its own terms. And, if nothing else, it makes me appreciate the good life I have.
I recommend this book but be forewarned. It will haunt your dreams and inspire nightmares.

A Compelling Universal Tapestry
By A Customer
I will not recount the story; the other reviewers do it, and for my money, the story is marvelous. Like so many, I did not want this book to end, and rationed reading it for that reason. I cannot think of any other writer I have ever read who can capture in concrete, substantial, palpable images abstractions like jazz, or pain, or love, or wistfulness. The visuals her words sculpt are staggering. Hardly essential to an appreciation of this magnificent work, if you have lived in Hawaii, ever had an appreciation of either or both of its indigenous and diverse cultures, been entranced by music, felt the power and mystery of natural things, it will resonate with you on innumerable levels. You will learn a fair amount of Hawaiian along the way if you care to, and you should, as it is a beautiful and evocative and incredibly musical language. The book is more than poetry--it is, in many ways, a great mele. It speaks of essences, of life's value, its challenges, its losses, its pain. There are parts as profound and compact in that as any philosophy one could want (the small chapterlet recounting Malia's last visit with Pono may be the best piece of writing in that regard I have ever read). The political material through the book is, if you read closely, not polemical, but balanced if with a clear but hardly simplistic preference. And on a societal level, it is a magnificent paean to the power of women, especially their power over men, wanted or not, and the consequences, marvelous and horrific, of that power. If you are a woman, or you truly love them as I do, you will hold this book fiercely to your heart. Those who say Ms. Davenport embraced too much in too complex a way--with which I totally disagree--would probably say the same of Thomas Wolfe, whose prose at times hers resembles, several of whose works I number among my favorites in the language. I would rate this book higher than any I have reviewed on Amazon to date, and among the best novels I have ever read--and I have read thousands.

A drifting song of the islands...
By Luan Gaines
The most promising and interesting theme of this novel is the undaunted spirit of the Hawaiian people. Through the eyes of one particular family, the time frame is the 1930's through World War II, devastating the closely-knit community, many native Hawaiian sons lost in combat. The story moves back and forth: from Hawaii to the New Orleans jazz scene, Shanghai to Paris, and back. In the course of events, one heartbreaking message is the truly ignoble and inhumane use of euphemistically named "comfort women" by Japanese soldiers. These innocent women were harvested from city streets and villages to service their captors, their tragic borderline existence only recently widely discussed and documented for readers. Released after the war, their original numbers decimated, they became "ghost women", emaciated and most permanently physically and psychologically damaged.
The central theme, however, is the displaced love of Keo and Sunny. A gifted musician, Keo follows his muse and Sunny becomes his most ardent and loyal fan. As Keo disappears into his music, he barely remarks Sunny's search for her own affirmation in the search for her long-lost sister. Tragically parted by the war, Keo and Sunny endure years of separation as each is subjected to horrendous experiences as Japanese captives, each clinging to the memory of the other. But I had no clear sense of Sunny's personality from the beginning of her reciprocated attraction to Keo. Later, when Keo is agonizing over her whereabouts, a more particular sense of what he so desperately misses, other than adoration, would have helped me appreciate Sunny's qualities. The story changes locations frequently, and I found myself wanting more details of Keo's family and their ongoing struggles, how their ties to one another sustain them through loss and separation. I suspect the most potent material rests within the heart of this family.
Some editorial cuts may have better centered the story. Perhaps Davenport is intending to illustrate the rambling nature of Keo's search, his frustration and overwhelming loneliness, but I feel the novel loses its original vital focus. There are some hectoring passages at the end of the book on the issue of statehood, but my sympathies were already engaged. While certainly an entertaining and informative read, the novel would resonate more fully with fewer geographic leaps and already acknowledged social injustices added to the forum. An emphasis on the love story and tragic circumstances surrounding the lovers, especially the atrocity of "comfort women", was certainly sufficient to hold my interest.

The Last Full Measure: A Novel of the Civil War (Civil War Trilogy), by Jeff Shaara

In the Pulitzer prize–winning classic The Killer Angels, Michael Shaara created the finest Civil War novel of our time. In the bestselling Gods and Generals, Shaara’s son, Jeff, brilliantly sustained his father’s vision, telling the epic story of the events culminating in the Battle of Gettysburg. Now, Jeff Shaara brings this legendary father-son trilogy to its stunning conclusion in a novel that brings to life the final two years of the Civil War.

As The Last Full Measure opens, Gettysburg is past and the war advances to its third brutal year. On the Union side, the gulf between the politicians in Washington and the generals in the field yawns ever wider. Never has the cumbersome Union Army so desperately needed a decisive, hard-nosed leader. It is at this critical moment that Lincoln places Ulysses S. Grant in command—and turns the tide of war.

For Robert E. Lee, Gettysburg was an unspeakable disaster—compounded by the shattering loss of the fiery Stonewall Jackson two months before. Lee knows better than anyone that the South cannot survive a war of attrition. But with the total devotion of his generals—Longstreet, Hill, Stuart—and his unswerving faith in God, Lee is determined to fight to the bitter end.

Here too is Joshua Chamberlain, the college professor who emerged as the Union hero of Gettysburg—and who will rise to become one of the greatest figures of the Civil War.

Battle by staggering battle, Shaara dramatizes the escalating confrontation between Lee and Grant—complicated, heroic, deeply troubled men. From the costly Battle of the Wilderness to the agonizing siege of Petersburg to Lee’s epoch-making surrender at Appomattox, Shaara portrays the riveting conclusion of the Civil War through the minds and hearts of the individuals who gave their last full measure.

Full of human passion and the spellbinding truth of history, The Last Full Measure is the fitting capstone to a magnificent literary trilogy.

Amazon.com Review
Author Jeff Shaara rounds out the Civil War trilogy started by his late father Michael Shaara, whose book The Killer Angels describes the Battle of Gettysburg. Just as Jeff Shaara's Gods and Generals covers action prior to Gettysburg, The Last Full Measure picks up with Confederate General Robert E. Lee's retreat from Pennsylvania and continues through the end of the war. Shaara focuses on the characters of Lee and Union commander Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, both of whom play prominent roles in the earlier books. He also introduces a new one: Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who would finally defeat the South--something no soldier before him could manage. The Last Full Measure is often exciting and poignant, and fans of The Killer Angels and Gods and Generals won't be disappointed. --John Miller

From Publishers Weekly
Concluding the Civil War trilogy that began with his father Michael's Pulitzer-winning The Killer Angels, Shaara (Gods and Generals) chronicles Lee's retreat from Gettysburg and his valiant efforts to defend northern Virginia from Grant's superior, better-supplied forces. Seen alternately through the eyes of Lee, Grant and Maine abolitionist Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the narrative begins with the successful Union ambush at Bristoe Station in October 1863. It then details Lee's 18-month cat-and-mouse game as he outmaneuvers Grant, despite overwhelming odds and terrible deprivation, concludes with Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Impressively researched, this deeply affecting work can't be faulted for inaccuracy or lack of detail. But the occasionally coarse grain of Shaara's characterizations is a problem. Haunted by Stonewall Jackson's ghost, 56-year-old Lee frequently appears to be a semisenile neurotic. Grant, more concerned about his supply of cigars than battle losses, comes across as a dolt. This tendency toward caricature notwithstanding, Shaara has produced a stirring epigraph to his father's remarkable novel. Major ad/promo; first serial to Civil War Times Illustrated; BOMC and QPB alternates; author tour.

From Library Journal
The late Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels (LJ 9/1/74), about the Battle of Gettysburg, is a classic Civil War novel. His son Jeff has written two novels that bracket it and complete a trilogy about the Civil War in the East. In his Gods and Generals (LJ 3/15/95), Shaara followed the fortunes of several men destined to fight one another in the great battles of Antietam and Chancellorsville, and in this book he writes about the course of the war in Virginia from Lee's retreat from Gettysburg to his surrender at Appomattox Court House. Ulysses S. Grant has come East to assume command of all Federal forces and to confront Lee, and the war they make is marked by such horrendous battles as The Wilderness and Spotsylvania. As characters, Grant and Lee dominate this book, overshadowing such other historical figures as Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and John Gordon. Civil War buffs will find Shaara nodding on some small details, but they generally will be delighted with this book. More general readers, however, may find it lacks the dramatic intensity of his father's riveting novel. While not ranking with the very best Civil War fiction, it does take its place along side such fine ones as William Safire's Freedom (Doubleday, 1987).

Highly recommended if your a civil war buff.
By Honest Opinions
Even though the book is a novel, the author has the unique ability to mingle historical fact with his thoughts on perhaps the personal interaction between the primary real life characters. His knowledge of the civil war keeps the reader engrossed, almost to the point of wanting the ultimate outcome to change. The end of the novel with the post-descriptions of the major characters adds a great deal to this book. Highly recommended.

Interesting reading. Having lived just down the road from Gettysburg all my life (81) years I really enjoyed all the personal info of the Union and Conferate leaders. Some Info varied from what I believed I had learned as a child during many visits to the battlefield. I still go there several times a year.

Not quite his father, but close
By Dave Goldberg
I came away from Gods and Generals a bit disappointed. It wasn't bad but it was pedestrian, an illustration that Jeff Shaara clearly wasn't his father. The Last Full Measure changes my mind.
No, it's not Michael Shaara's "The Killer Angels'' _ very few books are_ but it's hardly pedestrian. And its central theme is far darker _ that war is about killing. Sherman ("War is Hell'') got it right and was instantly misunderstood. Sherman's total war was an effort to win quickly by destroying everything around him, anticipating all too well the next century's horrors.
What Jeff Shaara captures here is the same sentiment in Lincoln and Grant, who realized by 1864 that the more men killed on both sides, the more quickly the North would win because of its manpower advantage. It's rarely presented that way, perhaps because history has so mythologized Lincoln that to state it might tarnish his image. Shaara doesn't overstate the philosophy, instead simply puts it in Grant's thoughts. Finally, Shaara captures the personal links his father used so well. In fact, he may do it better _ one of the few weak spots in "The Killer Angels'' is the oversentimental Armistead-Hancock relationship. In this case, it's there in the prewar friendship between Grant and Longstreet, the reminisences between Grant and Hancock and the thoughts of Lee on the abilities of George Thomas and of Grant and Lee on John Bell Hood. There are weak spots. Except in the scene before Petersburg in which he's used to demonstrate the ineptness of Meade's chain of comman, he has little use. He's there, I suspect, because he was the central character in The Killer Angels. If Shaara's trying to balance the professional soldiers (Grant and Lee) against the volunteer, it doesn't quite come off.
But this is a solid, solid effort, far better than Gods and Generals and not too far from Michael Shaara's masterpiece, which is probably the best piece of fiction written on any war.

Entering Normal (Ballantine Reader's Circle), by Anne D. LeClaire

In the tradition of The Good Mother and The Deep End of the Ocean, Anne D. LeClaire delivers a heartbreaking–and breathtaking–novel of two very different but equally loving mothers who face the most painful of losses and then find the courage not only to go on but to find meaning and hope in their lives.

Rose Nelson is a middle-aged woman with a broken past, a sorrow from which she cannot recover. Secretly guilty about her role in her teenaged son’s death five years ago, she has sealed herself off from life, enveloped by a grief that has slowly eaten away at her relationship with her husband.

Against her will, Rose is drawn into the world she has avoided when Opal Gates and her five-year-old son, Zack, move in next door. Determined to start an independent life for herself, twenty-year-old Opal has left her family and the father of her son in North Carolina. But when she quickly begins an affair with Tyrone Miller, a part-time mechanic and local musician, Opal unwittingly breaks the tacit rules of both her family and her new hometown.

Initially, Rose cannot bear the sight of Opal and her son. But later when Zack is injured, she instinctively lies to protect Opal from a single mistake that changes the lives of everyone involved.

Faced with a custody suit brought by Zack’s father and her own parents, Opal faces a trial in which each choice she has made will be used as ammunition in the battle to take Zack away from her.

Confronting such devastating loss and the questions it poses are at the heart of Entering Normal. How does one go on after great tragedy? What is a family? What sacrifices must a mother be willing to make for her child? And how can a good mother sometimes make bad choices?

Entering Normal is a story of family, a novel about courage, loss, risk, and betrayal. It is a story that goes to the heart of love.

Amazon.com Review
In Anne D. LeClaire's Entering Normal, two women are bound by the shared trials of motherhood: birth, hope, separation, and grief. Though Rose Nelson is an older woman still mourning her son, who died five years ago, and Opal Gates is a young single mother scrabbling to raise her 5-year-old son, the two women begin to cleave together.

Both move through their worlds in a dreamlike trance, only surfacing above their own self-absorption when confronted by the violence of life: infidelity, passion, jealousy, and death. Though emotionally clueless men bumble around Rose and Opal, they are never able to pierce through these women's barriers. Rose and Opal are too convinced of their own needs--Opal believes she needs no one, while Rose focuses only on her dead son. As the two begin to find each other, the reader awaits the moments of growth that allow them to see beyond themselves. As Rose entertains hope, so does the reader, "In the morning light, for one brief moment, she ... can almost believe that she has already experienced her lifetime's allotment of pain and grief." LeClaire's skill for describing human action succeeds here as well, as her characters fail and triumph with realistic probability. Alternately melodious and emotionally torturous, Almost Normal is a moving debut. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

From Publishers Weekly
An emotional wallop comparable to that produced by Sue Miller's The Good Mother or Jane Hamilton's A Map of the World awaits readers of LeClaire's latest (after Sideshow, etc.). In the small town of Normal, Mass., Rose Nelson has never ceased grieving over the accidental death of her teenage son, Todd. Years of unremitting grief and compulsive housecleaning have dismayed and frustrated her devoted husband, Ned, who tries to lose himself in work at the filling station he owns. Rose notices a peculiar itch around a mole that could indicate cancer, but tries to dismiss it because she doesn't trust drugs or doctors. At the same time, 20-year-old Opal Gates arrives in town with her young son, Zack, in tow. On the lam from her boyfriend, Billy, and her nagging mother in New Zion, N.C., stubborn, flighty Opal has landed in Normal because that's how far exactly three full tanks of gas have taken her chance and signs are central to her life. When she rents the house next door to the Nelsons, prudent Rose observes that "girls like Opal suck trouble to them" and resolves not to get involved. Though striving for independence and ambivalent about a new romance, Opal does seem fated to attract trouble. First, Zack breaks his arm when she sneaks out to the store while he's sleeping; then Billy, with Opal's parents' help, files a custody suit. The tentative friendship that slowly develops between Opal and Rose sustains both women as they face new obstacles and old demons, and the saga of these endearing (if at times frustrating) characters will hold readers' interest right up to the bittersweet ending. From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-LeClaire's first novel is a poignant mixture of love, loss, compassion, guilt, tolerance, and consequences. Opal, the 20-year-old unwed mother of 5-year-old Zack, has run away from home to escape her critical mother and Zack's father. Composed of equal parts na‹vet‚, sagacity, original thinking, and love for her son, the young woman feels that she has been given a sign to flee exactly as far as three tanks of gas will take her, which is to the town of Normal, MA. There she meets Rose, who is middle-aged and reserved-the opposite of Opal-and still in deep mourning for her teenaged son killed in a car accident five years earlier. While Opal could use a dash of Rose's restraint, Rose needs to stop blaming herself and resume living. Zack's father sues for custody of the boy, merely to show Opal who is boss. She fights it and Rose steps in to help after having seen how much Opal loves the child despite her shortage of parenting skills. Opal finds a new boyfriend, lower class with a heart of gold, and is unable to resist his charms, both in and out of bed, thus threatening her custody case. Rose's husband dies suddenly of a heart attack, and the two women end up helping one another through their respective ordeals. YAs will learn much here about human nature, the lessons leavened by Opal's offbeat thinking.

Loss and Renewal
By Amazon Customer
In Anne D. Leclaire's powerfully written novel, the reader enters the lives of two women who are far from normal. Opal is a young woman with a small boy who has fled from her mother, the father of her child, and her past. She moves next door to Rose who is a middle aged woman whose only child has been killed in an automobile accident. She has been grieving for 5 years, an activity that totally absorbs her. She has a loving husband who has tried to help her move on but she does not want to move on, partly because of the guilt she feels about her son's death. Opal's presence is the catalyst for change that Rose cannot ignore. This book is a page turner. From the time I began reading the first page until the end of the story, I did not want to interrupt the experience. By the way she presents Opal, Rose, and Rose's husband Ned in additional to several peripheral characters, Anne D. Leclaire reveals herself as a warm, caring, insightful person. She is the author of several previous novels that are also worth reading. I am recommending this novel to my book club and friends.

A Brave Mother
By A Customer
This story tells of a desperate twenty-year-old mother, Opal Gates, who has made more than her share of mistakes in her life. She accidentally had a baby, Zack, at fifteen, and after that, her life changed forever. Her mother hated her more than ever, and she discovered that she did not love the baby's father, Billy, after all. On an impulse, she decided to pack up and head north with Zack without telling of their destination to anyone. At Normal, a little country town in New York, Opal found a new life, a new work, and a new start in her life. She enjoys herself, and made friends with her neighbor, Rose. However, all of a sudden, Billy wants his son back. For five years he had not paid attention to his son's warfare, and now, he does. He, supported by Opal's mother and father, challenge her to the law. Vivian Cummings, Opal's lawyer, helps defeat the opponents, but at the end, Opal has to move back to her old home in New Zion. But she goes back with support this time, instead of being alone: Rose.
I like this book because I have never had the wrath of my parents on me. They have always loved me for my twelve years with them, and never for a moment told me I shamed them. Occasionally, when they are angry at me, I think about running away, but never did accomplish it; I'm too practical, since I know I can't stand a night without shelter or food. So it is interesting to hear about someone else running away from the world she knows well to someplace she has never been to. Furthermore, I have never heard of a teenager having so many troubles yet: I know there are accidents that involve babies, but never before the combination of babies, anger, and running away. It seems too much to happen to a teenager.
My favorite part of this story was at the courthouse. I have often thought about being a lawyer, so I like to read about such things. Lawyers, like Vivian Cummings, are so clever in making up snappy comments and defending the offender to the end. And they can make the mistakes the offender did sound mild and unimportant. To be all that, a person has to be very well trained. And very few people are, so reading about it is great.
