With this title comes the daunting task of saving his beloved campus from diminished enrollment, hockey thuggery, and its ignoble associations with Paul Bunyan. So when the most famous poet in America agrees to come to Rookery, Leland hopes that his reading will put Rookery State on the literary map.

But when he arrives, the poet is more and less than what Leland expected--and their relationship leads Leland on a wild ride that will compel him to harbor a fugitive, stand up to his domineering mother, and finally make peace with his brief attempt at love and the tragedy that ensued. . . .

Amazon.com Review
Readers of Jon Hassler's Rookery Blues will remember Leland Edwards as a high-spirited young English professor and jazz pianist who, with like-minded fellow academics, formed a quartet called Icejam in 1969. In Hassler's latest novel, The Dean's List, Leland is 25 years older and a much sadder man. Now the dean of Rookery State College, a mediocre institution in northern Minnesota, Leland finds his administrative duties and his dying mother shouldering out what little energy or time he has for music. But if Leland Edwards has given up his dreams of a jazz career, he still has some hopes for his reputation as an academic. When a famous elderly poet, Richard Falcon, comes to Rookery State to work on what he hopes will be his final masterpiece, Leland sees an opportunity to put himself and his institution on the map.

The Dean's List is more melancholy than its predecessor. Still, Jon Hassler's inimitable style, his flair for character, and his well-limned portraits of Minnesota and its people lighten the shadow of gloom that hangs over Rookery State College this year.

From Library Journal
In this sequel to Rookery Blues (LJ 6/1/95), Hassler revisits Rookery State College in Minnesota some 30 years later. Leland Edwards, one of the faculty in the first book, is now dean of the college. In spite of growing older and more successful, however, he is still striving to understand his family and friends, tentatively exploring new relationships, and often simply trying to survive the follies of campus life in the 1990s. These are not easy tasks since he has complex ties to his dependent mother and his ex-wife. Additionally, he is constantly beset by academic Philistines who are more concerned with finances than education. Using both humor and affection, Hassler has developed quirky, eccentric, but believable characters to bedevil Leland and entertain the reader. In doing so, he has succeeded in portraying the small gains and losses that make up daily life for most people. Recommended for most contemporary fiction collections.?Barbara E. Kemp, SUNY at Albany

From Booklist
Hassler, author of the critically lauded novel Rookery Blues, has resurrected the hero of that work, Leland Edwards, dean of Rookery State College, for his latest novel. Dean Edwards, a mild-mannered, middle-aged professor of English, leads a quiet, complacent life. He is divorced, lives with his aging yet still domineering mother, attends weekly bureaucratic administration meetings, teaches English to bored college freshmen, and spends his spare time fishing. It is only when the most famous poet in the U.S., Richard Falcon, agrees to come to Rookery State College as part of a fund-raising effort, that Leland's quiet lifestyle is transformed. During the poet's visit, Leland stands up to his tyrannical mother, harbors a fugitive, revisits memories of the father he lost when he was 14, and ultimately makes peace with himself. Quietly amusing and engaging, Hassler's well-written portrait of life in a tiny Minnesota town will please all readers. Kathleen Hughes

Jon Hassler's Dean's List explores aging and significance.
By A Customer
As a displaced Minnesotan, I always enjoy revisiting my home state via the novels of Jon Hassler. Like coming home for the holidays, this book evokes the mixed emotions of anticipation and disappointment, the joy and frustration of renewing relationships with the relatives, and the uncomfortable reality that time takes its toll on the ones we love.

Hassler fans will find in The Dean's List another enjoyable trip to the now-familiar small town of Rookery. But this book is unlike its predecessors in that it may be Hassler's last outing to the Badbattle River valley. Readers may not know that Hassler has Parkinson's disease. And the awareness of his mortality seeps through the pages of this book.

While all of his books are to some degree autobiographical, we see in The Dean's List a greater sense of authorial self-revelation. Leland Edwards, the Icejam Quintet alumnus and now dean of the college, is a frustrated academic-turned-administrator struggling to keep his school above water. He encounters his hero, Richard Falcon, a Frost-esque poet working on his magnum opus. Edwards decides to revitalize the good name of Rookery State by bringing the esteemed poet to campus for a rare reading.

Little does Edwards know that Falcon has his own struggles, not the least of which is the onset of Parkinson's disease. And in these two characters we get a glimpse of Jon Hassler's own plight. Both Edwards and Falcon--and Hassler himself, we might surmise--are fighting to achieve a sense of purpose, meaning, accomplishment and lasting significance at a point in their lives where the clock is ticking and the odds are against them. Will they achieve their goals? Will they complete the tasks that lie before them? And will they be remembered when they are gone?

It is these elements that make this novel an intriguing read. True, it lacks some of the power and beauty of his earlier novels--but this too, is illustrative of the trauma we experience as we approach the end of life. Can we find meaning and significance in our midlife and waning years? This novel provides insights well worth contemplating, from one who well knows what it feels like to be there.

Find a comfortable chair, put up your feet, and enjoy!
By Mary Whipple
There's a comfortable "old-shoeness" to picking up a Hassler novel. One doesn't read Hassler primarily for the plots, though they are sometimes dramatic and always include a grande finale. Rather, one reads him for his wry depictions of ordinary humans and for his gentle, but trenchant observations about midwestern, middleclass, or academic life. The Dean's List is a sequel to Rookery Blues, and it is helpful, but not necessary, to have read that.
Though the plot line here is not as insistent as in some of his other novels, one doesn't really care. Who can read this book and not be amused by characters like Dot, "traumatized in...youth by the Great Depression," a woman who "hangs up her used paper towels to dry." The annual fund-raiser dinner at the Hi-Rise housing for the elderly is a classic-- collecting funds to build rest room facilities on the main floor so that residents "caught short" won't have to go upstairs to their apartments to find relief. Lolly Edwards's planning and attending her own full-blown wake so that she can see her friends and out-of-town relatives and hear all her eulogies is so remarkable one wonders why more people don't do it! I loved every minute of this book.

Minnesota Blues
By M. Tosko
I have not read Hassler's "Rookery Blues," but after finishing "Dean's List" this morning, I plan to start "Blues" by nightfall. Hassler's story stays with you even when you're not reading him--the mark of a good writer. Although much of the book is suffused with a melancholic, wintry mood, it is also greatly funny at times. The malapropic hockey coach is particularly hilarious. On the down side, there may be just a few too many extended-family characters than necessary, and it is hard to believe that the protagonist, approaching 60 years of age, is genuinely such a "mama's boy"! Also, the protagonist's second marriage at the end seems a little forced, as we learned comparatively little about his new wife during the main part of the book. On the plus side, Hassler's story keeps the reader involved, and his inclusion of poems by the fictional, aging poet, Robert Falcon, adds a nice touch of realism. I would also truly love to see hordes of people come out to see a beloved poet, as happens in the book. In short, "Dean's List" is engaging without being overwrought. I'd especially recommend it for anyone who is or has been in academia in the 1990s. Hassler, much like Richard Russo in "Straight Man," manages to poke fun at higher education while also eliciting a certain amount of respect for it.

Amazon.com Review
Star Wars owes a lot to its details. George Lucas made his world so believable and compelling by getting all the little things right, whether it was a chip in Vader's helmet or the sand on a Stormtrooper's boots. Of course, this feat was no accident--extensive conceptual planning and design went into all the Star Wars movies, perhaps most so for Episode I: The Phantom Menace. This excellent "insider story" art book by Phantom Menace researcher Jonathan Bresman pulls together a wealth of these preliminary paintings, sketches, and computer animatics. Starting in early 1995, the Episode I art team sweated out nearly four years in a renovated attic at Skywalker Ranch, and Bresman's book gives an eye-popping account of their efforts, a sweeping survey of the movie's "evolutionary record," what Bresman calls "the unseen art that serves as the foundation for the film."

Divided into sections covering each of the movie's major locales (e.g., Theed, Coruscant, Otoh Gunga), The Art of Phantom Menace gives detailed illustrations of many of the creatures, structures, and vessels that made the final cut to film. But even more interesting are those that never left the sketchbook or hard drive--what fan wouldn't want to see a bulky, bipedal droideka or Padmé's horned, reptilian "swamp horse"? Call-outs alongside the art reveal the untold story behind many characters, like how Jedi Council member Yaddle really did begin as a sketch of a young Yoda, and how Jar Jar at one point had a wacky "dog" sidekick named Blarf. (Lucas and crew thankfully dodged that bullet.) --Paul Hughes

About the Author
While an undergraduate at Harvard, Jonathan Bresman spent his summers working at Skywalker Ranch as a production assistant on Radioland Murders, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and Star Wars: Episode I. During his senior year, Jon was asked to continue working on Episode I as a research consultant. Upon graduating in 1996, he returned to Skywalker Ranch, and since then has been involved with many aspects of the film's production--from conceptual design to principal photography to post-production. He currently resides in Berkeley, California.

If you are looking for the best Star Wars art book ever published, you just hit it! You will find inside, sketches, drawings and never before seen depictions of the Star Wars Episode One creatures and spaceships! The book is beautifully crafted and wonderfully arranged... and its a pleasure to stroll trough those pages. Special attention to the creative development of worlds must be given for sure! Feel the power of the force when you see the scary drawings of gargantuan Coruscant...and the weird Darth Maul....and surely, enjoy Naboo: the City of Theed chapter, where you will find how it evolved from inks to a Space Renaissance paradise!

Beware this is the 44 page excerpt book
By Tamara Littlejohn
Sellers are using this page to sell a book that is actually titled: THE ART OF STAR WARS EPISODE I: an excerpt of the book written by Jonathan Bresman. The ISBN matches this work, which is only 44 pages in length and was given away with the purchase of a VHS version of the Phantom Menace. The way Amazon lists this book can be misleading because they refer to it as the paperback edition in the review which claims it is a massive volume with over 600 illustrations. They are actually referring to another edition of the book... the TRADE PAPERBACK EDITION. This error has caused me a lot of fuss with two of the used book traders here at Amazon. Know that you are not buying the 200+ page oversize work with this webpage.

A veritable art-gallery by master conceptual artists
By A. Fondacaro
I would never have thought that I would stoop so low in nerd-dom and buy a book like this, but there is more to being a nerd than simply obsessing over your favorite fantasies.
I love Star Wars, hate the Phantom Menace. And yet way back when the VHS release was going on, I too crowded into a Media Play at 12 in the morning with my buddy and his wife to get my advanced Widescreen Collector's copy. DVD has since come and taken away any significance to that item, but what did come along with it was a little booklet featuring excerpts from "The Art of Star Wars; Episode I." For a long time this little booklet and I rarely parted, and I thought I was so priviledged to have this particular booklet and that it would one day be a rarity.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered THIS book, the actual Art of Star Wars. Not only does it have everything in my booklet, but it presents conceptual art from all corners of the movie. There's so much to look at, and so much that is fascinating to look at, you can't help spend hours just looking.
The book is hard-bound, with pages made from such high-quality paper, it will make you turn them with tweezers, they feel so expensive. The art is presented in chronological order with the film, so that reading it cover-to-cover is almost like watching the film. For most of the artwork, a little background information is provided in the corner next to a numerical key denoting which works belong to which artists.
As for the quality of reproduction; I am rarely satisfied when something I've drawn is scanned onto a color-copier, which often is the best option for reproducing them. I still lose something in the translation from pad to paper, a little bit of hue here, some shading here, depth of line there. However, in this book there is nothing lost. (Nothing is lost, or the originals must be stunning to look at!) The artwork shows you just why the movie relies so much on visuals (and not on strength of character or plot). Artists Doug Chiang, Ian McCaig, and Terry Whitlatch to name a few, are so skilled at vividness, their works immediately juice your imagination into action. Looking at concepts for space-ships, you can almost hear them fly.
The emphasis is on Doug Chiang and Ian McCaig, one a brilliant architectural and mechanical artist, the other a genius at characters and costumes. Whitlatch seems to handle most of the aliens, while gorgeous matte-paintings by Doug Chiang depict, in color, some of the more finalised concepts.
If you are a fan of Star Wars, this book is a must for any in-depth knowledge of how things developed behing the scenes. For film scholars, I would also recommend this book, for the glimpse it provides into the realm of pre-production, especially for you film scholars who have never set foot onto a film studio, or a design office.
For fellow artists, I can only say that these works inspire to improve my technique and work even harder at my art. It's always the test of an artist when he runs into someone who is superior; does the work make you want to quit art, or make you want to improve? This stuff will make you choose the latter.

Last of the Dixie Heroes, by Peter Abrahams

Roy Hill married the girl of his dreams, dotes on his eleven-year-old son, and is next in line for a big promotion in the Atlanta office of a global corporation. Then, almost imperceptibly, it all starts to unravel. A chance encounter with a group of Civil War reenactors sends him down a new, devastating path where the lines between fantasy and reality will blur, blanks will be replaced by bullets, and a bloody history will live again. An extraordinary story about the fate of men and women no longer in step with the rhythms of the modern world, as they march back into Southern history to make things right, Last of the Dixie Heroes is an unforgettable novel of suspense.

From Publishers Weekly
With his diverse settings, quirky characters and intriguing story lines, Abrahams (Crying Wolf; A Perfect Crime; etc.) has set himself up as a master of engrossing, off-the-beaten-track suspense yarns. However, although his latest effort starts out promisingly, it runs out of steam just when it should be revving up to a climax. Though he doesn't realize it at first, Roy Hill's life in Atlanta is coming apart at the seams. His company has been taken over by a megacorporation (resulting in Roy's losing out on a promised promotion), he's divorced (with an 11-year-old son) and his ex-wife's new squeeze "doesn't even bother to get dressed in the morning" (he's a lumpy online trader). But when Roy becomes intrigued by the off-hours activities of one of his business colleagues a Civil War reenactor our hero seems to have found a comfortable niche. At first, Roy finds Gordo's hobby amusing ("harmless fun in funny clothes"), but the peace of 1863 life begins to look better and better and the boundaries between contemporary reality and historical playacting begin to blur with increasingly disturbing repercussions. It's clear from the outset that the Abrahams style is still in high gear the deadpan humor, often expressed as wry one-liners; the trenchant observations on motivation and behavior. But the author gets bogged down in historical details and a myriad of vaguely developed characters, and readers may find that Roy's confusion becomes their own. This is a case where the journey (read: Roy's gradual dissolution) proves more enticing than the ultimate destination. (June)Forecast: This won't be Abrahams's Appomattox, but it sure won't be his greatest triumph, either.

From Library Journal
Abrahams's tale is faintly reminiscent of Julio Cortazar's Blow Up in that it revolves around a perceived reality. In Last of the Dixie Heroes, protagonist Roy Hill (namesake of a Civil War hero) experiences a depressing personal cycle when he loses his wife and his job. His salvation seems to be in reliving the Civil War with a local reenactment group, but eventually the reenactments turn real, and Roy's personality becomes confused with his famous ancestor's. Massive amounts of whiskey, self-pity, and Yankee-hating only make Roy's situation worse. Eventually, a union reenactment group kidnaps his son, and war is officially declared. While undoubtedly a creative undertaking, this story struggles to convince the listener that Roy and his unit are anything but a bunch of drunken good ol' boys still fighting the war. Buck Schirner's narration unfortunately only reinforces this perception. People who participate in war reenactments are likely to be insulted by this work. Not recommended. From Booklist
The 1998 publication of Tony Horwitz's nonfiction account of Civil War reenactors, Confederates in the Attic, seems to have fired the imagination of fiction writers. Jane Hamilton's latest novel, Disobedience, dealt with the strangely compelling world of reenactment, and now this studied effort to time-travel forms the spine of a suspense tale. Roy Hill is a Kafkaesque business operative, performing nebulous work in a series of cubicles for an Atlanta multinational company. His home life is ambiguous; his wife leaves, then returns, but her loutish boyfriend threatens both Roy and his son. His work is rewarded with a promotion that leaves other cubicle workers envious. When a coworker invites Roy to a Confederate reenactment, Roy becomes drawn to that world, which somehow seems more real than his own life. The problem, however, is that it keeps getting more and more real, with real bullets replacing blanks, and new battles raging under cover of the old. A well-crafted and compelling thriller. "The Fan" meets the Civil War Re-enactment Scene
By Brian English
However, LAST OF THE DIXIE HEROES is subtitled "A Novel of Suspense," but it's hard to figure out why. There really isn't much in the way of suspense in this book.
Regardless of this, Abrahams had me there for a while. For two thirds of LAST OF THE DIXIE HEROES, Abrahams weaves an interesting tale of a guy stuck in a dead-end white collar job. Roy Singleton Hill is buffetted by the forces of corporate mergers, cuckolded by his floozy of a wife, and desperately trying to salvage his relationship with his son. Abrahams is at his best as he paints this uncomfortably realistic portrait of a man's world falling apart.
As Hill begins to get involved in reenacting the Civil War, we see him gradually move away from his grim present and live increasingly in his rose-colored view of the past of his great-great-grandfather and namesake, a Confederate hero who rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest. In spite of Abrahams' acknowledgement that he consulted men from the 22nd Massachusetts reenactment group in his research, he gets the reenactment scene a little wrong. But these are forgiveable errors, which can be put down to poetic license.
Less forgiveable is how the story implodes in the last seventy or so pages. Hill's relationship with Lee, a fellow reenactor who is not what he seems develops and peters out meaninglessly. Hill runs into what could be a long-lost relative, but this fascinating storyline is left undeveloped and without a real payoff. An incredible encounter with his one-time boss at an amazing point of the story come totally out of nowhere, and passes by without incident. But the worst part is where, for some strange reason, a group of rival reenactors escalate to a scale of real-life violence for no apparent reason. The climax of the book is so silly as to completely strain the credulity of even the most forgiving reader.
And in spite of all the momentus and over-the-top events that happen in the last two chapters, there is an incredibly brief two-page wrap up of all the plot lines that wraps up everything up in a way that is not only too convenient, but too implausible.
As I say, Abrahams had me there, and had orchestrated a nice set-up. But then he just tossed it all away by turning the whole thing into a silly action movie. Which kind of reminded me of "The Fan," a movie based on an earlier Abrahams book of the same title. Actually, THE FAN and LAST OF THE DIXIE HEROES both feature fathers who have been separated from their sons by divorce. This doesn't come across as a theme in Abrahams' work; it's more like he took his manuscript for THE FAN and tweaked the setting from baseball to Civil War re-enactment. Unfortunately, the changes didn't improve the absurdity of the story.

Is There An Editor In The House?
By David K. Taggart
This is a neat premise -- disaffected urban male retreats to 1863 to live. And Abrahams is a very good writer -- keen observations, sustained narrative drive, a dead-on sense of place (the Atlanta-area setting and details are at least as good here as Tom Wolfe's A MAN IN FULL; the biggest shock in the book was finding out that Abrahams lives on Cape Cod).
But LAST OF THE DIXIE HEROES just falls apart like a house of cards in a slight breeze. Did an editor do anything with it at all, other than spellcheck? Are there any editors anymore? Or is Abrahams too valuable a writer to risk offending by editing his work?
The protagonist, Roy Hill, is fully-drawn, and his motivations are real. But none of the other characters breath at all. His wife arbitrarily becomes [promiscuous] after 10 years of marraige. His boss is "sharp-dressed, well-spoken Black man" from Central Casting, and there's no reason to see why he would take any interest in Roy's career. There's no reason why his best friend from work should even be his friend. The character Lee has a secret which surprised me -- because normally you watch reruns of THE A-TEAM to find plot points this silly.
This doesn't even mention the "damnyankee" bad guys who show up two-third of the way through the book, a climax that is obviously tacked on to fit, and an on again/off again racial angle that twists and turns into nothing.
This said, LAST OF THE DIXIE HEROES is a compulsive page-turner. Peter Abrahams, and his readers, have been let down by the editing, or lack there-of. This one needed work done on it.
NOTE: My copy was the poorest printing of a mass-market paperback I've ever seen -- four pages totally darkened out, and another eight with very light printing. Of course, if you're not going to spend the $ to edit a book, I guess you're going to be reluctant to remainder damaged copies of the print run as well.

Brainless
By A Customer
This book had a catchy title and I picked it up. It was a great read from the start but was so twisted near the end.
The main character Roy seemed so clueless. The author's constant uses of "What?", "I don't know what you mean", and Roy's constant state of bewilderment was almost laughable. He had no clue of what people were saying around him. In fact, a whole page is dedicated to someone trying to clue him in. For example when Roy was told his whole department was let go he didn't get it. Even though all of the furniture, computers, and cubes were gone Roy was still wondering when he was going to start his new job as the boss of a department that was missing. The conference call with NY was classic, Roy ripping his shirt off because he couldn't breathe... correction Curtis's shirt, because Roy forgot he was wearing a UGA Football T-Shirt. The ending made no sense. I should write a book if they publish this junk.

Amazon.com Review
Robert Crais (Free Fall, Monkey's Raincoat) returns with his eighth Elvis Cole mystery, L.A. Requiem, a breakneck caper that leaves the wise-cracking detective second-guessing himself. Cole's partner, the tight-lipped, charm-free Joe Pike, gets a call from his friend Frank "Tortilla" Garcia. Not only is Garcia a wealthy businessman, he's a political heavyweight and father of Karen, Joe's ex. Frank sends the gumshoe duo out to find his girl, but the boys are beaten to the punch by the men in blue: Karen is found in a park with a bullet in her brain. The two stay on the case, but when another murder points to Pike as a suspect, things take a turn for the worse. The boys on the force are all too willing to put Pike away--he has a checkered past. When Cole attempts to save Pike, he finds a lot more than he bargained for.

Crais's knack for snappy dialogue and clean-cut scenes bespeak his former days as a writer for the award-winning Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law: "Krantz's mouth split into a reptilian smile, and I wondered what was playing out here. He said, 'I want this man questioned, Lieutenant. If Pike here knows the vic, maybe he knows how she got like this." Pike said, 'It won't happen, pants.' Krantz's face went deep red, and an ugly web of veins pulsed in his forehead. I moved close to Pike. 'Is there something happening here that I should know about?'"

From Publishers Weekly
In his eighth book about wise-cracking Los Angeles private detective Elvis Cole, Crais has expanded his narrative reach and broadened his characters' horizons to produce a mature work that deserves to move him up a notch or twoAinto Parker or Connelly country. He's done this by focusing on Joe Pike, Cole's tough and hitherto totally enigmatic partner. It's Pike who breaks in on Cole's reunion with Lucy Chenier, his lawyer/broadcaster lover who has just moved from New Orleans, to ask for Elvis's help in tracking down the missing daughter of a rich and powerful Hispanic businessman. When the girl turns up murdered in Griffith Park, it's Pike who gives a nerdy medical examiner valuable assistance; and when it turns out that the girl's death is linked to several other murders, it's Pike who is charged with killing the chief suspect. Through flashbacks to Joe's past life as an abused child, a highly motivated teenage soldier and an L.A. cop fighting to keep a corrupt partner from destroying his family, we learn more about Pike than we did in the seven previous Cole books. This new focus also allows Crais to keep Elvis's often annoying throwaway lines to a minimumAalthough more pruning could have been done with no loss of flavor. The book's scope is wide enough to include many other memorable characters, especially a rough-edged, vulnerable police officer named Samantha Dolan, plus a choice of plausible villains. There may be one too many metaphoric descriptions attempting to link aspects of the L.A. landscape with the moods and deeds of its inhabitants, but overall Crais seems to have successfully stretched himself the way another Southern California writerARoss MacdonaldAalways tried to do, to write a mystery novel with a solid literary base.

An Exceptional Book
By Old Fisherman
As with most of the reviewers, I've followed Robert Crais from the beginning and this is his best book yet.
It starts with Joe Pike's ex-girlfriend, Karen Garcia, being gunned down by the Hollywood Reservoir as she's out jogging. Karen's father, an Hispanic with huge political clout, doesn't trust the police to work the case so he asks Joe to act as an overseer to the case, and Joe involves Elvis Cole. As more evidence surfaces it looks like a serial killer may be at work and when the prime suspect is himself murdered, Joe Pike is arrested for the killing.
First, the plot is very well done. It has the requisite twists and turns and I don't think many people will figure this one out before the author wants you to.
Secondly, the writing is superb. Crais has always been a good writer in a mild breezy way, but with this book he shows us he can handle deeper emotions. This is a darker, more serious, book than his others and he handles it with aplomb. I, at first considered this series as a Spenser wannabee, but his writing has now pushed him beyond that. He is a very good writer.
Third, his characterization is rich. Joe Pike, who up until now has been Elvis Cole's spear carrier, emerges as the complex human being we've always felt he might be. Far from being the emotionless killer, we find that Joe's emotions are there but well hidden. The book does a wonderful job of explaining what made Joe the way he is. Some others have remarked that Joe is a little too unbelievable, but I don't think so. There really are men like this in the world.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. I gave it five stars and I don't give out that rating lightly. You won't be disappointed.

Has a Southern California feeling~!
By FRANK R. GIARDINO
My opinion...Robert Crais may not be in the "famous"spotlight", but the man can write. L.A. Requiem is a study of life, death and cruel lies...populated by facinating and truly "different" characters. Elvis Cole, former Ranger and special ops veteran is the boss man...partnered with Joe Pike, a quiet, strong veteran of the ugly war in Nam. Love them, hate them or find them intolerable...the detective outfit they run is a dead, solid perfect description of the private investigation business as opposed to bureaucratic, ponderous police operations that are loaded with 'bad guy"s looking to move up the ladder and get out of the squad cars. The story has sadness, love, hate, major surprises and is an outright page turner. Overall, reading about Elvis Cole and Joe Pike is time well spent, and an example of writing that was a pleasure for the author. The reader may count on this story and the setting in the Los Angeles basin, which Crais describes to perfection.

As Good As It Gets
By John R. Linnell
I have now read two Robert Crais novels in the Elvis Cole series. The first one, Monkey in a Raincoat and this one, the most recent. For my money, there is little to compare them. I found his first effort to be pretty thin porridge, but enjoyable. This one is a real story. A true whodunit for much of the book with many interesting subplots and characters. A book you hated to put down and looked forward to being able to get back to it. There are characters you can learn to hate and characters you root for. While the first Elvis novel was heavy on trying to be funny, this one is high grade raw meat and as serious as a heart attack. Others have detailed the book's storyline. My message is that if you are looking for one of the best books written in this genre in a long time, give it the "One Click" and get ready for some interesting reading!

, by the Light of My Father's Smile: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle), by Alice Walker

By the Light of My Father's Smile is Alice Walker's first novel in six years--a stunning, original, and important book by "one of the best American writers of today" (The Washington Post).

A family from the United States goes to the remote Sierras in Mexico--the writer-to-be, Susannah; her sister, Magdalena; her father and mother.  And there, amid an endangered band of mixed-race Blacks and Indians called the Mundo, they begin an encounter that will change them more than they could ever dream.  Moving back and forth in time, and among unforgettable characters and their stories, Walker crosses conventional borders of all kinds as she explores in this magical novel the ways in which a woman's denied sexuality leads to the loss of the much prized and necessary original self; and how she regains that self, even as her family's past of lies and love is transformed.

By the Light of My Father's Smile presents, as Alice Walker puts it, "a celebration of sexuality, its absolute usefulness in the accessing of one's mature spirituality, and the father's role in assuring joy or sorrow in this arena for his female children."  It explores the richness and coherence of alternative culture, experience of sexuality as a celebration of life, of trust in Nature and the Spirit, even as it affirms the belief, as Walker says, "that it is the triumphant heart, not the conquered heart, that forgives.  And that love is both timeless and beyond time."

Amazon.com Review
The Mundo are a new tribe, created by the intermingling of escaped Black slaves and native Indians in the Mexican Sierras. Ineligible for academic funding, a husband-and-wife team of African American anthropologists pose as Christian missionaries to secure sponsorship to live among the Mundo and study their culture. This soul-stifling deception underlies the family tragedy at the heart of Alice Walker's novel, her first in six years. The father, preaching the message of his puritanical Protestant sponsors, is "sucked into the black cloth" of Christianity and blinded to the Mundo's life-affirming ways. When he discovers his daughter Magdalena's affair with a young Mundo, he beats her with a belt, thus estranging himself from both her and the younger daughter, Susannah. The first of several narrative voices to speak is his. Dead, he has become an "angel" who observes his daughters from the "other side" and seeks to make amends for the pain he inflicted on them in life.

It is the conceit of By the Light of My Father's Smile that angels have complete access to the consciousness of the living beings they observe. One of the book's very first scenes involves the ebullient lovemaking of Susannah and her partner, Pauline, reported in sweaty detail by the angelic paternal voyeur. Highly explicit, this set piece is a kind of guerrilla assault on our sensibilities, preparing us to receive Walker's urgent message--that sexuality and spirituality are inextricable, that denying one causes the other to atrophy as well. The blessings of fathers are, according to this canon, essential to the sexual flowering and spiritual maturity of their female offspring. It is in the loss, the conferring, and the claiming of these blessings that the novel finds its narrative thrust.

By the Light of My Father's Smile is intended perhaps less as a story than as a parable presenting Walker's cosmology for the new millennium--one that synthesizes ancient and modern wisdoms in a way that's as artistically daring as it is politically correct: Sex is good, repression is evil. Dominant is bad, distaff is good. European culture is dead meat, the third world is wise, there is ongoing commerce between the living and the dead, great orgasms shall set us free. Many readers will agree that a world built upon these precepts surely would be preferable to the one we now inhabit. Here, as in previous fictions, Walker the storyteller is spellbinding, Walker the preacher-theorist, less so. On the other hand, what other novelist risks so bravely or with such generosity, and seeks to give so much? With the proper mindset, Walker assures us, anyone can become a member of the Mundo tribe. --Joyce Thompson

From Publishers Weekly
A passionate but somewhat misguided polemic against the abuses of patriarchy, Walker's first novel since Possessing the Secret of Joy (1992) tells the story of two daughters who overcome the sexual repression forced on them by their anthropologist father. In the early 1940s, the Robinson family travels to rural Mexico, where Mr. Robinson (who, unnamed, narrates most of the novel from beyond the grave) and his wife, Langley, are studying a doomed people known as the Mundo, the wise, egalitarian descendants of escaped slaves and Indians. The central event of the book comes when Mr. Robinson, ordinarily a gentle man, finds his 15-year-old daughter Magdalena having sex with a local boy, Manuelito, and beats her, in a scene witnessed by Magdalena's younger sister, Susannah. To the relief of Mr. Robinson's repentant ghost, both daughters find ways of fulfilling themselves despite this trauma: after an encounter with a fortune-telling dwarf (the village outcast in the native home of Susannah's Greek husband), Susannah leaves her husband and enters into a loving lesbian relationship; Magdalena, now a hugely obese academic, bumps into Manuelito (now an alcoholic, crippled, impotent Vietnam vet) on an airplane and, against all odds?in the book's one disappointingly reticent love scene?reconsummates their love. The deeper reconciliation between father and daughters takes place in the spirit realm. Even Walker's fans are likely to find the novel hard going, as the narrative moves confusingly back and forth between living and dead characters, the past and the present. Between the highly schematic plot and the characters' habit of speaking in self-righteous pieties and (fictitious) indigenous proverbs, Walker can test one's patience. Yet her spare, charged language, and her earnestness (whatever one may think of her extravagant historical claims or her essentialism in matters of race) will no doubt continue to win her a wide readership. Reading more like an essay than a novel, this latest work by the prodigious Walker (Anything We Love Can Be Saved, LJ 5/1/97) is an "exploration of sexuality and how society's attitudes toward it have damaged both men and women."

Not for everyone!

Alice Walker is one of those writers whose work has the power to reach out and touch you when you need it most. This and I believe many of her other works are meant to be read at certain critical points in a specific persons life. Points when it is necessary to come to terms with a particular complex of issues. I thought it was telling when one reviewer said that the pre-occupation by some of the characters in this book with their personal traumas was unrealistic. Trauma is by its very nature pre-occupying. And what becomes lodged in an individual persons psyche as a result of the trauma they have experienced is typically unique to that individual (no one can judge the magnitude of pain in anothers heart). As a person who has been hurt reading the words of Alice Walker not only lets me know that another is serving as a witness to my pain it also shows me that there is joy waiting behind a door that I hadn't even realized existed. And it is in those moments that I feel truly blessed my her writing. Perhaps this and her other works are not perfect, in truth they are not. But in that moment when she has captured the pain in ones heart and soul, given it voice and a means to move forward who cares if it isn't the perfect novel? I guess those who haven't felt the coldness of a heart alone and bereft. For my part I say thank you Alice and keep writing, at least for me!

a stunning creation
By A Customer
I knew Alice Walker's name, but had never read her, and thus it was on a whim that I plucked this book from the library shelf.
By the Light of My Father's Smile is easily the best reading I have ever enjoyed. Walker's words are beautiful, grotesque, gentle, raw, passionate, honest. Her lovemaking scenes are intensely physical and emotional; metaphors about life itself and not the characters individually, and deliciously loving. It was refreshing to see a male point of view from a female writer, a male point of view on sexuality, a deceased male point of view on his daughter's intimate lives and his impact therein.
I read this book with no preconceived notions about Walker's writing style, no idea what the context of the book would hold, no expectations of character development, description, or prose--and I'll repeat, this is the best book that I have ever enjoyed. I have returned it to the library, but plan to purchase it to add to my small collection of books that make me feel so good I read them over and over.

Absolutely Captivating!
By Maurice Williams
By The Light of My Father's Smile explores the past, present, and future connection of the female characters in the novel to their father. Walker uses a multi-voiced approach in revealing the complexities of relationships both parental and romantic. The characters' speak from both life and deaths experiences revealing to the reader that issues not resolved in life must certainly be reconciled in death. Walker delivers insight and wisdom through the use of folklore, and the spiritual philosophy of an ancient Mexican/African tribe. She is able to demonstrate with clarity how male oppression of women, specifically a father's oppression of his daughter, effects a woman emotionally, sexually, and spiritually. A definite must read for the masses.

Kiss Me While I Sleep (Howard, Linda), by Linda Howard

If you sense someone’s watching you from afar, or if you feel a shadow other than your own at your back, I might as well pack it up and call it a day.

It’s a job that makes a killing. Efficient, professional, and without apology, Lily Mansfield is a hired assassin, working as a contract agent for the CIA. Her targets are the powerful and corrupt, those who can’t be touched by the law.

Now, after nineteen years of service, Lily has been drawn into a dangerous game that hasn’t been sanctioned, seeking vengeance for her own reasons. Each move bolder than the next, she is compromising her superiors, drawing unwanted attention, and endangering her very life. Though stress and shock have made her feel somewhat invincible and a little cocky, Lily knows that she too can be taken out in an instant. And if it’s her time, so be it. She intends to go down fighting.

A CIA agent himself, Lucas Swain recognizes the signs of trauma in the line of fire. His orders: either bring her in or bring her down. Yet he too is drawn into the game with Lily Mansfield, dancing on a tightrope as he tries to avoid a major international incident while still battling a tenacious foe who is dogging their every step. Keeping laser focus on the task at hand while vigilantly watching her back, Mansfield never sees the lethal peril that lies directly in her path . . . and how loyalty has a price.

Chock-full of the intrigue, breathless action, and sensuality that have made Linda Howard the master of romantic suspense, Kiss Me While I Sleep is a daring thriller of passion, sudden twists, and richly imagined characters who live and breathe in readers’ hearts. It is the most gripping and complex novel of Linda Howard’s career.

From Publishers Weekly
CIA contract agent Lily Mansfield has been a ruthless, professional assassin for nearly 20 of her 37 years, but her work takes a personal turn after the young girl she rescued off the street as a baby, and the friends that were raising her, are killed. Lily turns renegade and avenges their deaths with a brilliantly executed murder, but she soon finds herself hunted by an evil family, embroiled in a plot that threatens the safety of the world, and chased by handsome CIA agent Lucas Swain, who has been charged with bringing Lily back by any means necessary. Though Howard's latest offering (after Cry No More) is far flung, the high energy story line translates well to audio thanks to the compelling performances of Hill and Bean. The duo deftly tackle the story's many intonations and foreign accents, and their skillful use of nuance lends some depth to Howard's larger-than-life characters.

So good
By K Kristan
I first read this book when it came out in hardcover, and loved it. I hadn't read it in years, but since I was in the mood, I bought the kindle version. It's just as good as I remembered. It's the perfect combination of romance and intrigue. Plus there are enough twists to keep you guessing what will happen next.

Too much talk, not enough action!
By Pearl
There was a surprisingly void of action in this book. Probably 70% was "what characters were thinking." Pages and pages of thinking. Most Linda Howard books are not this slow. Disappointed!

Book 3 of the CIA Spies series was the best one. I enjoyed all 3 stories but thought this one had more action and held my interest the most. I hope Linda continues the series.

Flinx's Folly (Adventures of Pip & Flinx), by Alan Dean Foster

Bestselling author Alan Dean Foster delivers a Pip and Flinx novel featuring a certain twenty-four-year-old with red hair, growing powers, and a loyal sidekick who just happens to be a flying mini-dragon. Flinx’s Folly follows Flinx on a thrilling quest to unravel the mysteries of his mind and body. It is a quest that forces him to confront a horror almost beyond human comprehension concealed somewhere in the universe . . . and coming closer.

It’s a good thing Flinx is no stranger to trouble, because he’s swimming in it. Even before the latest murderous attack by a new gang of assailants, there seems no end to people determined to arrest, examine, or kill him. To add insult to all that injury, Flinx has been spirited away and enlisted in a battle against a monstrous extra-galactic threat. Hidden behind the Great Emptiness, in a place where it seems matter and energy have never been, there is only evil. Pure evil that is approaching him, accelerating.

Against such a quintessence of colossal evil what can one puny human and a formidable mini-drag protector do? Flinx must tell someone or go out of his already addled mind. Choosing a confidant is easy: Clarity Held, a crush he hasn’t seen in six years. She is a young woman who has clearly gone on with her life in ways that (he soon learns) don’t necessarily include Flinx.

Whatever happens, Flinx makes up his mind to act quickly. His decision is the beginning of a terrifying, high-stakes adventure through perilous new realms that will rocket him into the very heart of danger–and into the arms of the only woman he’s ever loved. As he and Pip bravely travel to a place where no man or mini-drag has gone before, Flinx discovers he has a few more friends than he thought–and far more enemies than he ever imagined.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Foster (Drowning World) offers brisk, lightweight SF entertainment in his eighth novel about Flinx (aka telepath Philip Lynx) and his Alaspinian flying snake (or minidrag) Pip. On the planet Goldin IV, Flinx discovers that his dreams about a monstrous evil beyond the Great Emptiness are now reaching other people with deleterious results. He also learns that he's being chased by the Order of Null, dedicated adepts who want a cleansing death for the whole universe and are afraid he'll prevent it. Fleeing in his alien-built supership to the paradise planet New Riviera, he takes up with his old lover, Clarity Held. Unfortunately, she's picking up the dreams, too. Still more unfortunately, Clarity's fiance, Bill Ormann, is becoming homicidally jealous. In fact, he's about to kill them both when Flinx's old mentors, the thranx Truzenzuzex and the human Tse-Mallory, do a good imitation of a deus ex machina and dispose of Mr. Ormann. Much of the rest of the book dissolves into informational dialogue about several long-vanished alien species who may hold the key to preventing the evil from coming out of the Great Emptiness and making an end to all things. Fans of serious SF will give this a pass, but Foster's large following should ensure another bestseller.

From Booklist
Series hero Flinx's empathic powers go out of control, and then there is a massive blackout. After escaping hospital workers, who want to further test his decidedly strange brain, Flinx realizes he needs to tell someone about his strange dreams, not to mention the mental power surges and the worsening of the headaches that come with his empathy. There is only one person he trusts enough, his ex-lover Clarity. Visiting her on New Riviera, he discovers that his dreams are, for lack of a better term, contagious. Those dreams, which involve a great, destructive evil traveling toward occupied space, also seem to cause his power surges. While with Clarity, he unintentionally manages to kill all nearby plants and cause her to see something of what he sees. Between the mad jealousy of Clarity's almost-but-not-quite fiance and the appearance of bizarre death cultists, Flinx has his work cut out for him. Despite its nasty cliffhanger ending, a fast, light, adventurous afternoon read. Regina Schroeder

Review
Praise for Alan Dean Foster and Reunion, a Pip and Flinx adventure

“Bestseller Foster has created yet another entertaining adventure story in the far-flung reaches of a far-future outer space. . . . Using the traditional cliff-hangers and narrow escapes of classic SF adventure page-turners, and propelling Flinx from one crisis to another, from moral dilemma to deus-ex-machina, Foster enlists multiple formulas for a surefire . . . reading experience that should appeal to space-opera fans.”
–Publishers Weekly

“Flinx’s trek through the deadly desert and his encounters with the AAnn make for a good read.”
–Locus

Almost a Hit
By razzman_d
I have read every Flinx story so far, and this has to be the least useful of them all. What do I mean? Well, there is no new info given (at least none that readers could not have gleaned from the earlier stories) and the story itself has stagnated - -Flinx gets in trouble, gets out of trouble and in the process learns very little about himself and even less about what is happening to him. There is really no need to continually place him in mortal peril 2-3 times per story anymore - the character and story have moved past that point. What we are all waiting for is "What's next?" Who are the entities in Flinx's dreams (though some are explained in this story, there were no surprises); what part, if any, will the UU's play; how much longer can the Commonwealth continue to ignore that a Meliorare experiment is still running around loose?
Also, the story is too darn short! There is obviously so much more to be told, why not tell it? Believe me - Flinx would be as aggravated as I am about the lack of information!
So why give this 3 stars? I can't help myself - ADF is one of my top 2 favorite SciFi authors and he still writes as well as ever! The Commonwealth is as colorful as I remember, the human species hasn't advanced so far that it is unrecognizable, and we all need a little dry humor in our lives.
Take it for what it's worth: if you have read the other stories, you don't have to read this one because you already know most of the answers, but you should read it because it's Flinx! If you haven't read any of these stories, go back to "For Love of Mother-Not" and start there.

All Sizzle, No Steak
By Rusir-10
Okay, I've been reading the stories of Flinx and Pip for years now and I'm a huge fan. I'll admit that Foster's habit of jumping around chronologically in the novels he releases gets a little old (i.e. not within each story, but you're never certain where each new novel will fall in Flinx's life). Even given that I've usually enjoyed each one as it was released. The relationship between Flinx and Pip is explored in each book, Flinx learns more about his past, his powers continue to develop and Flinx matures and learns.
However, there's little of that in this novel. The only real development in this novel is that Flinx hooks up with Clarity again (and a few other characters, but I won't spoil that).
His powers are no more understand at the end of this book. The evil that he senses in earlier stories is about the same in this book. The powers that are influencing his powers and headaches are only developed in the smallest way.
Overall, I just found it kind of boring. Not much happens. Most of the story is driven by a jealous boyfriend and Flinx's headaches.
I'm not saying skip this one. If you're a fan of Flinx and Pip, you'll definitely be getting it, but save yourself some money and wait for the paperback. If you're new to the series, do not start with this story, but read some of the earlier stories like "For Love of Mother Not"
