Soon the war would come.

With a cry of joy Anna swooped toward the barren moon,
her sisters behind her. As her sleek body cut through the invigorating
vacuum of space, she surveyed the training site
eagerly, hungry for challenge. The Eye had specified the coordinates
to be attacked. This exercise was to be at close
range, surgical, precise.

Anna loved training, exploring her abilities, honing her
skills. She had learned the dizzying delight of movement, the
exhilarating leap to hyperspace, the grace of flexion, the joy
of the war cry. She had learned to deliver from their confinement
great balls of destruction; to calculate the most efficient
patterns of attack; to engage and never break off, not until the
enemy was utterly destroyed.

This would be the first time she uttered her war cry. As
she wheeled toward the target, Anna held her body in perfect
control. She felt tireless, invulnerable. The machine was
so beautiful, so elegant. Perfect grace, perfect control, form
and function integrated into the circuitry of the unbroken
loop, the closed universe. All systems of the machine passed
through her; she was its heart; she was its brain; she was the
machine. She kept the neurons firing in harmony. She synchronized
the cleansing and circulation in sublime synergy.
She beat out a flawless march with the complex, multileveled
systems. The skin of the machine was her skin; its bones and
blood, her bones and blood. She and the machine were one: a
great engine of chaos and destruction.

The rocky brown surface of the moon grew closer, taking
on definition, detail. She located the seven targets, boulders
within a wide, shallow crater. She and her six sisters were
each to destroy one. She narrowed her focus to her assigned
target, coordinated her speed with her course. Excitement
gathered in her throat. She plunged into the crater and
shrieked out her war cry. Her body rushed with an ecstasy of
fire. Energy blasted from her mouth in a brilliant red torrent.
The boulder was vaporized.

Around her, her sisters fell upon the targets, their mouths
screaming destruction.

Chaos through warfare, the Eye said. Evolution through
bloodshed. Perfection through victory.

One of the targets was not completely destroyed. A fragment
remained. Anna pounced on it, eager to shriek again.
She targeted it, screamed out chaos. The exhilaration shot
through her. The fragment was obliterated, a hole scorched
into the surface below.

Excited by the activity, her sisters fell upon the vanquished
target, shrieking out a cacophony of chaos. Particles of rock
flew up as they blasted a great hole into the moon, firing again
and again. Anna drew energy up into her mouth, screamed it
out in blazing red.

The greatest excitement is the thrill of battle, the Eye said.
The greatest joy is the ecstasy of victory.

Anna's greatest desire was to feel it. And she knew she
would soon.

For soon the war would come.

The ship sang of the beauty of order, of perfect symmetry
and ultimate peace. It glided through the calm blackness of
space, absorbing it. Energy circulated through its petals in a
regular rhythm. The serenity of its silent passage, the unity of
its functioning, the satisfaction of service wove through its
melody.

Ahead, a blue-and-white orb glowed in the blackness, the
goal of the journey. The ship slipped through the stillness
toward it, following Kosh's direction eagerly. Obedience was
its greatest joy.

Within the song, Kosh slowed the ship's speed, directing it
to stop a safe distance from the planet, which was known to
its inhabitants as Soom. Although most of the planet's inhabitants
had little technology, two lived among them and served
as guardians, two fabulists, who would detect his presence if
he went too close.

Soon more would come as the fabulists gathered for their
assemblage. Long had Kosh watched them, for three hundred
and thirty and three such assemblages. He had watched as
different races had become dominant within the group, the
most recent being Humans. He had watched as the fabulists
gradually transformed from anarchy to order. They had
achieved some admirable goals, had created fleeting moments
of great beauty.

But now the universe was gathering itself for a great conflagration.
The forces of chaos had returned to their ancient
home and had begun to build their resources for war. The Vorlons,
Kosh among them, likewise prepared. The fabulists did
not know the danger of their position. They carried great
power. They could be the pivot on which the great war turned.

Many among the Vorlons thought the time for action was
now. They did not trust the fabulists. Yet Kosh felt they must
watch just a while longer. The fabulists faced a difficult decision,
and they should be allowed to make it. If they chose
wrongly, then they would die. But let them first choose. Great
power carried both great danger and great possibility.

Kosh altered the ship's song, directing the ship to extrude
several buoys, which would take up positions around the
planet and observe it. Then he would return to Babylon 5.
And he would watch this one, last assemblage.

Looking forward to the second installment.
By D. Sinclair
The Technomages were some of the more provocative beings conjured up by Stracynski's imagination for the Babylon 5 universe. Their story-potential barely tapped by a sole B5 episode, 'The Geometry of Shadows', development of the history, powers and knowledge of the Technomages promised to be a major ingredient of Babylon 5: Crusade which featured a Technomage, Galen, among its main characters. Alas, due to Crusade's early cancelation, their potential was never realized.
This novel answers many open questions on Galen and his order. It sheds light on the origins of technomancy, reveals how the Technomages reacted to the return of the Shadows, and the crucial role Galen played in it. Once started, it is hard to put down. One of the best B5 novels so far.

Falls short for me...
By Robert G.
After reading J. Gregory Keyes' "Psi Corps/Bester" trilogy, and then Peter David's "Legions of Fire" I was expecting something amazing with "The Passing of the Techno-Mages" that just did not come to be. Don't get me wrong, it's not as poorly written, and anoying as the current Star Wars "Yuuzhan Vong" war/saga! But this just did not have many characters that I cared about (so far). But, it's B5 and I'll continue the trilogy, but I wish it had MORE.. Can't explain it, but it fell short...

Great start to series
By Mark Schweber
I have to say I was expecting much from this book. While I am a huge fan of the Babylon 5 universe, the technomages were never my favorite part. However, the book turned out to be great because of all the meat it added to the bones of the technomages.

The Shifting Tide: A William Monk Novel (William Monk Novels), by Anne Perry

In her new masterpiece featuring private inquiry agent William Monk, New York Times bestselling novelist Anne Perry displays her prodigious writing talent. With insight, compassion, and a portraitist’s genius, Perry illuminates the shifting tide of emotions encompassing Queen Victoria’s London and the people who live there—aristocrats, brothel owners, thieves, Dickensian ruffians, and their evil keepers. She takes us through dangerous backstreets where the poor eke out their humble livings, and into the mansions of the rich, safe and secure in their privileged lives. Or so they believe. . . .

William Monk knows London’s streets like the back of his hand; after all, they are where he earns his living. But the river Thames and its teeming docks— where towering schooners and clipper ships unload their fabulous cargoes and wharf rats and night plunderers ply their trades—is unknown territory.

Only dire need persuades him to accept an assignment from shipping magnate Clement Louvain to investigate the theft of a cargo of African ivory from Louvain’s recently docked schooner, the Maude Idris. Monk is desperate for work, not only to feed himself and his wife, Hester, but to keep open the doors of Hester’s clinic, a last resort for sick and starving street women.

But he wonders: Why didn’t Louvain report the ivory theft directly to the River Police? Why did he warn Monk not to investigate the murder of one of the Maude Idris crew? Even more mysterious, why has Louvain brought to Hester’s clinic a desperately ill woman who he claims is the discarded mistress of an old friend? Neither Hester nor Monk anticipates the nightmare answers to these questions . . . nor the trap that soon so fatefully ensnares them.

In this magnificent novel, Anne Perry holds the reader spellbound, as Monk and Hester struggle to save themselves and their world from a catastrophe whose dimensions they can scarcely measure.

Amazon.com Review
Commissioned to find the precious cargo of ivory stolen by river thieves from the hold of Clement Louvain's ocean-going schooner, private enquiry agent William Monk is intrigued by his new surroundings. The waterfront of the River Thames is a world unto itself, but without the help of the famed River Police, Monk hardly stands a chance of retrieving the ivory or tracking down the murderous men who killed an innocent crew member while robbing Louvain's ship. Not so coincidentally, Monk's wife Hester, who operates a shelter for sick and injured women of the streets, discovers that a woman with a mysterious connection to Louvain may hold the key to the missing ivory as well as many more deaths aboard his ship than the one Monk knows about. Perry's trademarked plotting, characterization, and verisimilitude in recreating Victorian London gleam brilliantly in this well-crafted historical mystery. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
The strain of publishing two major novels a year continues to show in bestseller Perry's 14th historical to feature private inquiry agent William Monk and his wife, Hester, despite the fresh start for Monk, who has recovered from the amnesia that afflicted him in Death of a Stranger (2002). In the autumn of 1873, because he needs the money, Monk agrees to recover valuable cargo stolen from a ship waiting to be unloaded at an East End London dock for the ship's owner, Clement Louvain, with the proviso that Louvain will also prosecute the thieves for murdering the ship's watchman. Monk enlists the aid of a young Cockney orphan, Scuff, who doubts Monk's ability to investigate a Docklands crime: "Yer in't got the wits fer it, nor the stomach neither. Yer stick to wot yer can do-wotever that is." Meanwhile, Hester, who receives no pay for the clinic she runs for streetwalkers, must deal with an unexpected death that she suspects may be murder. Unfortunately, the author too often tells rather than shows. The reader waits impatiently for the "ruthless" Monk to say or do something that suggests that quality. Still, with its focus on the lower classes and the Thames, the plot will resonate with fans of Dickens's riparian novel, Our Mutual Friend. And, as always, Perry uses her characters and story to comment on ethical issues that remain as relevant today as they were in Victorian times. Expect another bestseller.

From Booklist
Throughout much of the long-running William Monk series, set in Victorian England, the former London police officer and now "private enquiry agent" has been defined by his amnesia. In book after book, Monk has struggled to regain knowledge of his identity before the coach accident that took his long-term memory. In Perry's last Monk novel, Death of a Stranger (2002), the investigator regained his memory. In the latest, he barely remembers his amnesia at all and leaves the streets to work London's "longest street," the Thames. The question is: What is Monk without his amnesia? This book seems to abandon the now fully functioning Monk in favor of the far more varied and changeable Thames. After Monk is hired to investigate the theft of a cargo of ivory from a merchant ship and a related murder, he and the reader become aware of what a universe the river represents--and a crime-riddled one at that. It is fascinating to watch Monk try (and fail) to apply his London street smarts to a secretive milieu totally governed by the tides. Monk's investigation blends into his wife's work (Hester runs a clinic for assaulted or sick prostitutes) when a shipowner's cast-off mistress is brought in to the clinic with a mysterious ailment. This ailment eventually threatens all of London. Sketchy characterization, a somewhat obvious plot, but marvelous historical material on the Thames. Connie Fletcher

Outstanding story
By Amazon Customer
As with all of Anne Perry's books, The Shifting Tide, has such a beautifully told story that I lost track of time as I read it. The historically accurate details that she includes make the characters come alive and for a moment, I was taken back into 19th century London. I have enjoyed reading all of her books, but I think this book is one of the best. The story drew me in and held on until the last page. It can be enjoyed without reading the whole series, but once you're done, I bet you'll want to read more of William Monk, Hester, and the rest of the characters.

Excellent!!!!
By T. L Williams
This was an excellent book in the series. I love the way Anne Perry develops characters. With a lot of series, I find that the author sometimes seams to forget what was previously written, and writes something that clashes with what had already bee established. But not this series, or, the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series, also by Anne Perry.

compelling and memorable
By tregatt
Gather your cats/dogs/children and spouse/significant other, and firmly let them know that for the next 3 to 5 hours, YOU ARE NOT TO BE DISTURBED. And then, unplug the 'phone, pour yourself a thimble full of good port, make for your comfy chair and make your comfortable. For Anne Perry has written another gem that you simply cannot miss!! True, where the mystery subplot is concerned, things may be a little lacking; however if you look at the novel as an examination of human nature, at the unexpected strengths and hidden frailities of the characters involved, "The Shifting Tide" then becomes the compelling must read novel that it rightly is, whether or not you are a mystery buff.
William Monk has been hired by shipping magnate Clement Louvain to recover a shipment of ivory tusks stolen from his schooner, the Maude Idris. Normally, Monk would stay away from a case in which he is at such a disadvantage (Monk may know the streets of London very well, but he knows next to nothing about the river, the docks or the wharfs), but money is low and the need dire, so that in spite of his reservations, Monk agrees to take on the case. Louvain wants the stolen shipment found quickly and without the involvement of the River Police -- an especially tricky combination when murder is thrown into the mix, for the thieves had bashed in the head of one of the sailors keeping watch aboard the Maude Idris. Even stranger, Louvain is not at all interested in seeing that the murderer is apprehended and goes so far as to forbid Monk from wasting his time going down that road. Now why would he do this? Surely the murderer was one of the thieves? Monk senses that Louvain is keeping a great many things from him. A suspicion that grows when he learns that Louvain has taken a desperately ill woman (whom he claims is a friend's ex-mistress) to Hester's free clinic. But what neither Monk nor Hester anticipated was the nightmare that would soon unfold, and that would threaten their lives and happiness...
Mystery-wise, "The Shifting Tide" while intorguing was a little touch and go -- not too many cunning plot twists or sinister red herring culprits for Monk to track down. Even the usually tense courtroom scenes where Sir Oliver Rathbone is centerstage is absent; this time a healthy chunk of the novel is devoted to what Hester and her helpers go through as they battle illness, fatigue and their own inner demons. And yet what a suspenseful read "The Shifting Tide" was! The sense of time ticking away and of lives hanging in the balance was always there; and that together with the colourful and vivid characters that the authour created made this a very compelling read indeed. But most of all it was her portrayals of the unexpected inner strengths and nobility that the unlikeliest of characters exhibited, and her portrayal of human frailities, that made "The Shifing Tide" a memorable and worthwhile read.

“Food is the chief of all things, the universal medicine. . . . Food transmutes directly into body, mind, and spirit . . . creates our day-to-day health and happiness.”
—from The Macrobiotic Path to Total Health

Even in medical schools, alternative medicine is blossoming. Two thirds of them now offer courses in complementary healing practices, including nutrition. At the heart of this revolution is macrobiotics, a simple, elegant, and delicious way of eating whose health benefits are being confirmed at an impressive rate by researchers around the world.

Macrobiotics is based on the laws of yin and yang—the complementary energies that flow throughout the universe and quicken every cell of our bodies and every morsel of the food we eat. Michio Kushi and Alex Jack, distinguished educators of the macrobiotic way, believe that almost every human ailment from the common cold to cancer can be helped, and often cured, by balancing the flow of energy (the ki) inside us. The most effective way to do this is to eat the right foods, according to our individual day-to-day needs. Now in this marvelous guide, they give us the basics of macrobiotic eating and living, and explain how to use this powerful source of healing to become healthier and happier, to prevent or relieve more than two hundred ailments, conditions, or disorders—both physical and psychological.

This encyclopedic compendium of macrobiotic fundamentals, remedies, menus, and recipes takes into account the newest thinking and evolving practices within the macrobiotic community. The authors integrate all the information into a remarkable A to Z guide to macrobiotic healing—from AIDS, allergies, and arthritis, to cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. They also clearly explain what we need to know to start eating a true macrobiotic diet that will provide us with a complete balance of energy and nutrients.

Living as we all do in environmental and climactic circumstances that are largely outside our personal control, it is vital that we follow a healthy lifestyle, including a flexible diet that we can adjust to meet our own individual needs. The Macrobiotic Path to Total Health gives us precisely the tools and the understanding we need to achieve this goal. Use it to build a strong, active body and a cheerful, resourceful mind.

From Publishers Weekly
This book from the authors of The Macrobiotic Way and The Cancer Prevention Diet offers an all-inclusive view of macrobiotics-from diet to medicine to lifestyle. The book first explains the macrobiotic diet's focus on complex carbohydrates, vegetables and whole form foods, rather than on fat and animal-based proteins. However, most of the book is about the impact of certain foods on specific health conditions. Readers who have tried acupuncture or other Eastern treatments may be familiar with some of this information, but the text is quite comprehensive, covering the spectrum of minor ailments such as nausea to major conditions like heart and liver disease. The authors discuss the connection between different parts of the body: "In traditional Oriental medicine, the ear corresponds with the kidney, with which it shares a similar shape. Kidney problems as a rule lead to ear problems, while hearing difficulties in turn show underlying urinary system imbalance." To remedy such imbalances, the authors recommend, for example, applying a compress of sesame or ginger tea to alleviate motion sickness. For the many people who have been confounded by a medical condition that doesn't respond to traditional medicine, this book may offer many helpful strategies, though clearly readers suffering from more serious, life-threatening diseases such as cancer or AIDS should not immediately shift to a macrobiotic way of life without consulting their physician. Overall, this is an excellent resource that should find a wide readership among people who want to feel healthier but have not been helped by traditional medicine.

It isn't written to offer dramatizations or win converts. This is a step-by-step manual for those who seek guidance to healing through macrobiotics. And you don't have to have a "condition" to benefit from the wealth of information found in this book. Use it for deeper understanding of your body's healing potential and see what it can do for you if you care to follow the advice. This book also offers guidelines on cooking and recipes, but buying a good cookbook as a companion will provide you with a well-rounded experience. Go ahead and try it. This is powerful stuff.

This book is like 3 books in one: one on theories behind macrobiotics, one on healing remedies through healing diets, and also one on key recipes. It's user-friendly layout can be read front to back or you can use the index in the back to look up specific ailments, remedies or concepts. There's also a self-referencing set up in that if a good food or recipe is mentioned in one of the chapters and is written in capitals, that means you can find the recipe in the back of the book. I got this book to simply develop my macro library, and I ended up not only healing a few aches and pains, but trying out a few new recipes that I now love. This book will always stay with me. It's useful to anyone at any stage of their macro adventures!

Nights in White Satin, by Michelle Spring

"Powerful emotional intensity . . . The book hits you where you live," raved the Washington Post Book World about Michelle Spring's Standing in the Shadows. The Los Angeles Times hailed it as "[a] suspenseful thriller . . . truly startling." Now Michelle Spring returns with a psychologically astute novel that unfolds against the stately backdrop of Cambridge, England.

But behind this refined university setting lies something truly sinister.

For private investigator Laura Principal, the case begins unexpectedly at the annual May Ball, a jubilant celebration marking the end of examinations, an avalanche of food and fountains of champagne. Laura is hired to provide security, but somewhere between the dancing and the fireworks, a student disappears.

Katie Arkwright wore white. Sleek, elegant, in silver armlets, she was a vision of purity. But when Laura starts probing into the missing woman's life, she finds that Katie concealed a dark side. With this jarring revelation, Laura opens a floodgate of damning secrets and double lives--encompassing a college don's mysterious death and the discovery of the skeletal remains of a baby.

The deeper Laura searches into a tangled past, the more tension mounts in every corner of Cambridge--where someone waits, coiled to strike. And strike again.

Enigmatic characters, shameful acts. Hidden motives as passionate as they are malignant. A conspiracy of silence that shields an unspeakable truth. In Nights in White Satin, Michelle Spring penetrates the complex impulses that can seize desperate souls--and once again creates an incisive novel of psychological suspense.

From Booklist
Anglophiles will delight in this Cambridge-based tale, which convincingly weaves the city's geography and history into its well-crafted plot. Spring thankfully avoids the bane of many mysteries set in a famous city, breaking the history into easily digestible tidbits and never sounding like a travel guide. Readers will quickly warm to protagonist Laura Principal, a private investigator who helps support the agency by taking seemingly mundane gigs like providing security for Cambridge's annual May Ball. When a female student disappears after the ball, however, the job quickly turns menacing and eventually leads to murder. Meanwhile, a handsome academic makes a play for Laura, whose relationship with boyfriend Sonny has been a little shaky of late. Spring effectively mixes plenty of humor into her realistic, hard-edged crime story; readers will find themselves chuckling frequently at Laura's wit and ironic view of the world. A good choice for fans of P. D. James' Cordelia Gray. Jenny McLarin

From Kirkus Reviews
Even though men will sometimes be boys when women and drink are on offer, nothing could be more decorous, or more jealous of its propriety, than the May Ball, when Cambridge students celebrate the end of exams. That's why Philip Patterson, the master of St. John's College, passes over the police to ask Laura Principal, who's just finished arranging security matters for the ball, to look into the disappearance of Katie Arkwright, a visitor from lowly Anglia University across town, who asked her prim escort, Jared Scott-Pettit, to leave the dance and then took off without him when he declined. The briefest investigation discloses Katie's earlier brush with Cambridge: while she was waiting tables at a private dinner for the Dorics, 40 undergraduates and recent alumni of St. Bartholomew's, in the college's Echo Room, her clients turned on her, stripped her, and assaulted her. Is the person behind her disappearance now Roger Duff, ringleader of the Dorics, or Stephen Fox, senior tutor at St. Bart's, who sniffs to Laura that Katie was anything but blameless in the incident? Before Laurabereft of her partner and sometime lover Sonny Mendlowitz, who's off trying to vindicate a client accused of beating a prostitutecan focus her suspicions, murder narrows the field of suspects and raises the stakes for those remaining. Good Cambridge backgrounds and a strong sense of moral outrage offset the predictability and occasional self-importance of Laura's fourth case (Standing in the Shadows, 1998, etc.). Nights In White Satin' by Michelle Spring
At the Cambridge May ball, on a warm balmy magical evening in June, amidst champagne, smoked salmon, music and laughter, young, pretty Katie Arkwright disappears.
In this, the forth in the series featuring Laura Principal, Private Investigator, Aardvark Investigations had been retained to repel gatecrashers and maintain security at the Cambridge May Ball. Following the disappearance, Laura is retained by Stephen Fox, senior tutor at Bart's to find the missing girl.
Whilst pursing her investigations into Katie's disappearance, a murder and an unexplained death unfold. Both shocking. Are they related to the missing girl? Could the solutions be locked in the past?
The writing in this book is beautiful, Michelle descriptive powers brought the scenes to life, I was there. At all times during the story, the weather is hot, I felt this heat, and the beauty of Cambridge. The contrasts of life she portrays are so vivid. Some of the settings invoked a time gone by, and when Laura goes punting with her friend Helen down the river to Grantchester for a picnic, it brought to mind Stands the church clock at ten to three, and is there honey still for tea'.
This is a book full of full of beauty, violence, sadness, pain, and emotional conflict. It's also about choices, and the guilt that comes from fast actions that we think will solve an immediate problem and then we find that we maybe cannot live with them. also the resulting pain.
It's also a first class mystery, which I urge you all to read. This is not just highly recommended, it's a must.

A fine piece of suspense
By A Customer
The board sponsoring the Cambridge May Ball at St. Johns hires private investigator Laura Principal to coordinate security. The event honors those students who have completed three years of grueling work at Cambridge with a party. Nothing happens during the gala, but the next day the police question Laura pertaining to Katie Arkwright, who left the party early and has not been seen since.

The college hires Laura to discreetly inquire into what happened to Katie. Laura quickly learns that Katie had a waitressing job at an all male drinking club located on the St. Bart's campus. She also finds out that an ugly sexual incident occurred at the club. Stephen Fox, the senior tutor at the college believes Katie was partially to blame over the incident. Other evidence makes it seem that Katie was hooking. Two more incidents happen, but before Laura can follow up, someone kills Stephen. When data from the sixties surface, Laura realizes just how complex her simple investigation has become.

NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN show that women have come a long way since the sixties, but have a long way to go before they can be considered receiving equal treatment. Cambridge is a hot bed of male chauvinism where a woman is stereotyped as a Madonna (virgin type that is) or a prostitute. Laura Principal has done an excellent job of illustrating her theory that most women will probably support even as most men will disagree. The villains in this novel are caricatures of men who think women have one job, spreading their legs. More than just a well-designed mystery, this Laura Principal provides a damning social commentary on society's double standard. This work is a definite winner.

One of the best new writers
By Carol McGinnis Kay
This is another fine novel--well-written, compassionate, and intelligent--from one of the best of the new writers. Spring's characters and situations are complex, and the action typically has a reality (not to be confused with toughness) missing from many mystery novels.
I am dismayed and bewildered by the negative comments from the New England reader who apparently wanted Spring to have written another book, one with predictable feminist role models. One of Spring's strengths is the very lack of predictablity--her characters are as rich in detail and complex motivation as people we know.
I too heard Spring speak at PCA and I was impressed by the candor, intelligence, and passion of her remarks. She is a superb writer who lets us live a scene with her characters, and she thinks deeply about what she does with her books.
Starting with "Every Breath You Take" I have been hooked by Michelle Spring, and I can hardly wait for the next one.

Living in Process: Basic Truths for Living the Path of the Soul, by Anne Wilson Schaef

"Life is a process. We are a process. The universe is a process," notes renowned writer and lecturer Anne Wilson Schaef. In Living in Process, Schaef offers us a bold, new way of engaging in life--by shifting our obsession with "product" to a mindful participation in "process." Schaef teaches us an action philosophy that will reconnect us with our deep, long-forgotten spirituality--filling our souls and setting our spirits free.

What is process? It is the way of doing, not what is done. It is living life in three dimensions, from the inside, instead of trying to control it from the outside. It is a living, moving, evolving energy. It is deeper than thought, more concrete than concept, more fluid than facts.

Drawing on inspiring real-life stories, the experiences of professionals worldwide who have participated in her Living in Process training, and her close association with native peoples from around the globe, Schaef shares her evolutionary model for maintaining our balance in the midst of life's seismic upheavals. With her inimitable wit and charm, she guides us to a larger spirituality and a rediscovery of our personal power. For Living in Process is a moment-by-moment revealing of, and reveling in, our life as mystery--and an honoring of its challenges, truths, and joys.

Amazon.com Review
What is process? It is the way of doing, not what is being done, according to Anne Wilson Schaef. It is the tone of voice, not what is being said; the act of parenting, not the 21-year-old child product. In a world that emphasizes results, control, and material rewards, Schaef's process-oriented approach is a soothing antidote. "We are not static," she writes in her opening chapter. "The planet is not static. Life is not static. Life is unfolding.... We can participate, that is all. We cannot predict or control."

Chapter by chapter Schaef breaks down the daily situations that beg for attention to process, including "The Family," (which features intelligent essays on the various styles of parenting, such as "Benevolent Dictator" and "The Little King/Queen Approach") and "Relationships," (which includes helpful essays on "Intimacy" and "Making Love"). Occasionally Schaef meanders, especially in the beginning of the book, where she delves into the deep spiritual healing work involved in becoming process-conscious. However, her overriding voice is authoritative and intelligent, bringing in indigenous religions, spiritual leaders, and even poets to explain the how-tos and implications of process thinking. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
In what may be considered a postmodern approach, the author of the bestselling Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much articulates a way of spiritual growth and development that is a recasting of ancient wisdom for modern people. Emphasizing awareness of internal experience over the striving for any external result or gaining any predetermined parcel of knowledge, and emphasizing our connection to a Creator that, Schaef says, is itself a process, she sounds radical in the way that resembles the wisdom of native peoples. Rejecting all the toxic baubles and obsessions of our addictive "technocratic, materialistic, mechanistic" culture, Schaef (who has learned in recent years that her biological father was Native American) draws together basic hallmarks of a life lived in process. Honesty, self-responsibility and an overarching desire to live one's life as a spiritual path: these unpretentious yet uncompromising values, one suspects, would win the approval of the old Koori man whom she quotes as once saying to her, "You know what's the matter with you people? You work. Work is your main problem." Despite real-life stories that show that Schaef's insights flow from an evolving work, her descriptions of what she calls "deep process" are so vague that readers may leave her book more frustrated than enlightened

A new way of seeing
By alexxcz
Living in Process is a deep jewelry box of ideas. Slowly, you must sort thru the anecdotes and stories to find glittering meaning. I found some other reviews of the book amusing, "where are the exercises?" other readers demand. This is a gentle book that invites you to change your world. Change your viewpoint. Open your mind. It invites you to change your entire view on how you live your life, not a chance to scurry through a set of exercises or mantras. I adored it. "You are what you read" I've heard. If you are a seeker on a path of enlightenment, I recommend this book as a companion.

Very Practical!!! If you understand her premise
By Jose I. Martinez
This book had improved my life. It had not changed the way other books had but this book does not try to do it all, but her premise is extremetly powerful. Yes, life is not static and that idea has very powerful consequences, and then you realize that it always was true and all she is saying is something that had always beein that way but now you see explicitly. The realization that Life is not static will bring your life to new heights. It did to me. I am more loving, less stressfull, more happy and feel a whole lot better after that simple realization. It is dificult at the begining but once you accept the difficult idea that life is not static then you become free!!! Great book. Not a one stop all, but a great and powerful simple idea. That simple idea has had very practical applications in my life.

Rise to Rebellion: A Novel of the American Revolution (The American Revolutionary War), by Jeff Shaara

Jeff Shaara dazzled readers with his bestselling novels Gods and Generals, The Last Full Measure, and Gone for Soldiers. Now the acclaimed author who illuminated the Civil War and the Mexican-American War brilliantly brings to life the American Revolution, creating a superb saga of the men who helped to forge the destiny of a nation.

In 1770, the fuse of revolution is lit by a fateful command—“Fire!”—as England’s peacekeeping mission ignites into the Boston Massacre. The senseless killing of civilians leads to a tumultuous trial in which lawyer John Adams must defend the very enemy who has assaulted and abused the laws he holds sacred.

The taut courtroom drama soon broadens into a stunning epic of war as King George III leads a reckless and corrupt government in London toward the escalating abuse of his colonies. Outraged by the increasing loss of their liberties, an extraordinary gathering of America’s most inspiring characters confronts the British presence with the ideals that will change history.

John Adams, the idealistic attorney devoted to the law, who rises to greatness by the power of his words . . . Ben Franklin, one of the most celebrated men of his time, the elderly and audacious inventor and philosopher who endures firsthand the hostile prejudice of the British government . . . Thomas Gage, the British general given the impossible task of crushing a colonial rebellion without starting an all-out war . . . George Washington, the dashing Virginian whose battle experience in the French and Indian War brings him the recognition that elevates him to command of a colonial army . . . and many other immortal names from the Founding Family of the colonial struggle—Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Joseph Warren, Samuel Adams, Richard Henry Lee— captured as never before in their full flesh-and-blood humanity.

More than a powerful portrait of the people and purpose of the revolution, Rise to Rebellion is a vivid account of history’s most pivotal events. The Boston Tea Party, the battles of Concord and Bunker Hill—all are recreated with the kind of breathtaking detail only a master like Jeff Shaara can muster. His most impressive achievement, Rise to Rebellion reveals with new immediacy how philosophers became fighters, ideas their ammunition, and how a scattered group of colonies became the United States of America.

From Publishers Weekly
Once more breathing vigor and passion into the dusty annals of our nation's history, the author of the bestselling Civil War trilogy (Gods and Generals; The Last Full Measure; Gone for Soldiers) demonstrates an ever-growing level of literary competence in the first installment of his projected two-volume saga of the American Revolution. Spanning the crucible years beginning with the Boston Massacre in March 1770 and continuing through the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July, 4, 1776, the story is told from the perspective of a handful of characters well known from our history books. In Boston, the Sons of Liberty activist Samuel Adams and his younger, more intellectual and oratorical second cousin, John Adams, speak out against King George III. In London there's aging Philadelphian Benjamin Franklin, who has resided for a number of years abroad, an agent for home colony Pennsylvania (and others). In New York, Gen. Thomas Gage is the ranking British officer on American soil. And heroic colonial planter George Washington has risen to full colonel in the Virginia militia fighting for George III during the French and Indian War. This masterful dramatization of the fateful escalation of the rebellion following the Boston Massacre moves from the battles of 1775 at Lexington, Concord, Fort Ticonderoga, Bunker Hill and the siege of Boston, through the convening in 1776 of the Continental Congress and the reading of the Declaration of Independence. Richly embroidered with portraits of such heroes as Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, Paul Revere, John Hancock and Thomas Jefferson, the tapestry chronicles America's plunge toward liberty. (July; on-sale June 12)Forecast: Ballantine is bringing out the big guns for this one: major advertising, a Boston launch, a 13-city author tour and Fourth of July Gettysburg media appearances. Simultaneous BDD Audio. Expect patriotic sales.

From Booklist
The son of Michael Shaara, author of the classic historical novel The Killer Angels (1974), seems to have inherited his father's talent. The younger Shaara also writes meticulously researched and compelling historical novels. His latest brings a fresh perspective to some of the familiar figures associated with the Revolutionary War Making excellent use of a you-are-there approach, Shaara focuses on a handful of prominent historical figures, including Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John and Abigail Adams, and British general Thomas Gage. We witness the American colonies experiencing growth pains and an increasing desire for independence and the corresponding British insensitivity to the needs and wants of the colonists; we observe coalescing resistance to such insensitivity, verbalized best by Franklin when he says to the British public in general, "With your vast army and your great navy, you may have the power. But you do not have the right." As in all good historical fiction, Shaara's novel gives historical figures flesh-and-blood viability. At nearly 500 pages, this novel requires a major investment in reading time, yet it is an investment painlessly made for it pays profitable dividends. Brad Hooper

Great balance between historical facts and personal emotions
By Dixie66Ro
While heavy in historical facts and details regarding the American Revolution the book strikes a perfect balance between that and insights into the characters emotions, pulling the veil from what really motivated some of them to act a certain way. It helps the reader better understand the complex circumstances around the events, the blind spots and shortcomings; it explain why sometimes they failed when all involved were sure of success and vice versa. I also liked that the book does not vilify the other side, but rather try to explain their actions by looking at the situation from their point of view. All in all a worthy book to read!

The Revolution from a vastly different perspective...
By Thomas Moody
The American Revolution story has been told and re-told many times, which leads me on a constant search for different "slants" with respect to how this story is told. My search has succeeded magnificently with Jeff Shaara's latest historical novel. This "old" story is re-interpreted here with the help of fictitious conversations and thoughts from many of the legendary Founding Fathers that add a whole new (and exciting) perspective...and, I might add, a whole new learning experience. The details of such legendary events as the Boston Massacre and Tea Party, the battles of Lexington, Concord and Bunker/Breed's Hill are richly and colorfully presented here with emphasis on the first person perspective that elevates the reader right into the action in a manner that I've never read before. It's interesting to note how just adding some perceived thoughts and discussions (fictitous though they are) add so much texture to the story...this is really the point that makes this book stand out. I could actually see and feel what it was like for the British soldiers facing the angry mob in front of the Boston Custom House prior to the Massacre...I felt like one of the sailors aboard the tea ship in Boston Harbor when the "Indians" came aboard and destroyed the East India Tea Company's load...I was breathlessly taken to "war" at Lexington and Concord (told from both the Colonial and British perspective)and then "camped" with the rebels at the siege of Boston as they were molded into the Colonial Army. The political side is covered equally as well with an enlightening version of how the Continental Congress was formed and how that esteemed body developed the Declaration of Independence. One could argue the historical accuracy of some of Shaara's assumptions, but I tend to accept them as part of the "novel" and, admittedly, enjoy the "fun" that these portray. Lastly, I greatly enjoyed Shaara's Epilouge where he presented the outcome for all the main characters...this was an amazing learning experience (to me) as most histories that I've read fail to disclose these events...at least in this context. So, after reading this wonderful account, I join with my contemporaries in saying that I too can't wait for the sequal and look forward to reading the other works by Shaara. Highly recommended.

Winter Warriors (Drenai Tales, Book 8), by David Gemmell

Winged demons gather, silent and unseen, above the city of Usa, their talons long and sharp. Their purpose is clear, as is the prophesy: Upon the deaths of the three kings, the demon riders of the Krayakin will become flesh, free to slake their thirst with human blood - and the stench of evil will cover the land.

Two of the kings are already dead. For the prophesy to be fulfilled, spreading carnage across the world, the Demon Lord must sacrifice the third king: Queen Axiana's unborn child.

When Emperor Skanda disbands his army, the pregnant queen takes flight, pursued by the Lords of the Undead. All hope lies with three ancient heroes, though discarded by the emperor, they are still Drenai soldiers: Bison the giant, Kebra the bowman, and the great swordsman Nogusta - the Demon Lord's greatest foe. But will these warriors - once the best in the land - be enough to stem the tide of gruesome horror that threatens to envelop the world?

Amazon.com Review
David Gemmell has a talent for fantasy tales of heroism and villainy that feature characters who, while sympathetically flawed, are almost superhumanly good at what they do. Often these people are warriors: finely drawn, emotionally complex, and struggling with their individual human challenges against the backdrop of epic events.

The heroic figures here are three Drenai soldiers, Nogusta, Bison, and Kebra, whose services have been rejected by their king because they are no longer young. However, while these old friends might be a tad past their best, they are still very good indeed, and when they are called upon to protect the infant heir to the throne, the little prince could not be in better hands. In the midst of flight and eventual, desperate battle against the forces of the demon lord Anharat, they fight not only a human army and a band of demon riders bent on the heir's death but their own doubts about their ability and worth. Gemmell is particularly deft at describing fine gradations of the friendship between the three men, including the subtleties of liking, of loving, and of the different strengths that come with age. Winter Warriors is both a fast-paced fantasy adventure and a powerful story of living and dying well. --Luc Duplessis

Gemmell does it again...
By --
Once again, David Gemmell leads us into the harsh yet fantastic world of the Drenai. The book is "Winter Warriors," and it showcases Gemmell's steadfast refusal to try to fix something that just isn't broken. If you're familiar with previous Drenai novels, the themes should be familiar - three old soldiers (a master swordsman with a tragic past, a bowman whose eyes are failing him, and a hulking brute with more heart than brains) find themselves embroiled in a quest to save Queen Axiana and her unborn son from the hordes of demons who seek them out. If the unborn king is sacrificed... yep, you guessed it, the world enters an age of unending darkness, and all mankind will suffer.
It's true, you could fault Gemmell's cast of characters for being too archetypical, and bearing more than a passing resemblance to previous characters in the Drenai series (compare Nogusta of "Winter Warriors" to Chareos in "Quest For Lost Heroes," or Bison to Beltzer in the aforementioned tome)... but be that as it may, each and every principle character in "Winter Warriors" is a living, breathing, flesh-and-blood human being, and few fantasy authors can achieve such a claim. Each man and woman behaves in a realistic, believable fashion, and comes out of the adventure dramatically changed by the experience. In an attempt to wow you with magical doo-dads, action set pieces, and enigmatic creatures, most fantasy authors forget to inject humanity into their work - but not David Gemmell. "Winter Warriors" is a deeply human story, no matter what demons or magical spells come into play. The action works because you genuinely care about the people fighting for their lives... and if you know David Gemmell, you know too that no hero is immortal.
I can find few faults in "Winter Warriors," to be quite honest. Granted, the premise is not very original, and the plot sometimes gets a little bit convoluted. Yes, "Winter Warriors" mimics the same themes of previous Drenai books (see "Legend" and "Quest For Lost Heroes," to name but a few), but I'm not sure that qualifies as a fault. It's very moving, inspirational stuff packed with at least as much drama as action. I just don't get tired of desperate men, underdogs by all accounts, standing up for what they believe in against seemingly insurmountable odds in the David Gemmell vein. If more of us lived our lives like Nogusta, Chareos, or Druss the Legend, I think this world would be a better place. Can I truly pay Mr. Gemmell a higher compliment than that?

A brilliant piece of heroic fantasy
By A Customer
Gemmell has a gift - he writes stunningly good fantasy which is gritty and realistic. There is no airy-farie whiff about his work, and no long, over-complicated backstory either (such as in the Wheel of Time). Gemmell keeps the story going at a blinding pace.
The ancient Drenai empire, once besiged from all sides, has been saved by the armies of its warrior king, and now he has marched onward to glory. However, his newly-taken empire is full of strife and tretchery ... and dark sorcery.
A Demon King is attempting to return his people to the world, and destroy humanity. To do so, he only has to kill the unborn child of the warrior-king. That child's only defence is three old men, discarded by their lord: Nogusta the Swordsmen, Kebra the Bowman, and the slow but sure Bison. In their hands rests the fate of the world.
This is a tale of sheer brilliance. Each of the characters is clearly defined and explored throughout the book, and we care about all of them, even the Demon Lord. It's a great story, and Gemmell is a great writer. Well worth and look for any fantasy reader.

Musings on Winter Warriors
By Dale Rippke
I have read all of the Drenai novels written by David Gemmell and I can assuredly say that this is one of his best books set in this world. While the plot is somewhat similar in style to his QUEST FOR LOST HEROES, the execution shows that he has grown considerably as an author. It is a tightly plotted novel that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster and leave you wanting more. Add to this some of Gemmell's best dialogue in ages and you have a book worthy of space on your bookshelf. You will revel in the exploits of Kebra, Nogusta, Bison, as well as Antikas Karios and Dagorian as they attempt to stop a demon-lord from plunging the world into darkness. I can't recommend this book enough.
