This rumination on the famous jazz singer is a mix of hagiography, music appreciation and criticism of past biographers, yet on its own terms, it works. Griffin (Who Set You Flowin'?: The African-American Migration Narrative), associate professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, sets out to examine the mythic figure Holiday created over the years, but she states from the outset that her book is not meant to be a formal biography or musical study. She is, though, determined not to see Holiday as a tragic victim. Probably the best-known book about Holiday is her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues, written "with" William Dufty (Griffin claims that Dufty actually created the book from talks and previously published interviews with Holiday). Griffin repeatedly points out errors in that work (e.g., it opens claiming that when Holiday was born, her mother was only 13, when in fact she was 19) and speculates as to why such errors might have been made intentionally (e.g., to portray her mother not as promiscuous but rather as the young victim of an older man). Griffin writes in a pleasant, easy tone, and many of her observations about the litany of notorious stereotypes applied to Holiday are astute, but the book suffers from a tendency to circle back over the same themes rather than expanding upon them. On several occasions, for example, Griffin compares Holiday to other artists, like Bessie Smith, L'il Kim and Mary J. Blige, only to decide that none can compete with Holiday; but then Griffin's trajectory changes again, and she devotes "the last chapter of this book... to Abbey Lincoln," whom she believes belongs in the same "pantheon" as Holiday and offers an alternative extension of her legacy. While this book sometimes wanders, in doing so it mimics the very music and elusive character it is describing; and while she has not organized her arguments in a superior fashion, Griffin engages readers throughout with her consistently intriguing observations. Readers should note that this is not a straightforward biography of Holiday (1915-59); it is more an invitation to discover a view of the singer grounded not in attention-grabbing headlines and sensationalism but in reality and, perhaps most importantly, in how Holiday's music spoke to listeners and celebrated and reflected their lives. Emotionally and intellectually, Griffin (English, Univ. of Pennsylvania; Who Set You Flowin'; Stranger in the Village) demonstrates a true fealty to Holiday's artistic achievements. Using several facets, including social and political commentary, poetry, and personal experiences, she reveals Holiday as a real person rather than a mixture of the myths and images created by managers, critics, and others who held sway over her, often not having Holiday's best interests at heart. While Griffin's book isn't the last word on Holiday, it does prove to be an excellent antidote to the often ridiculous material that has been written about Lady Day over the years. Jazz singer Billie Holiday's as-told-to autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues (1956), and the Diana Ross movie based on it emphasized her abuse of drugs and by lovers and managers. Griffin places her in the musical and political context of her time and explores the myths she and others manufactured about her life. A tough and talented woman, Holiday struggled mightily with racism and sexism. Spurning paths black women of her time were expected to walk, she refused to be a maid and soon rejected the life of prostitution she entered very early. For Griffin as for other black feminist writers and activists, Holiday is a literary and artistic ancestor, and they have reclaimed her, revising the image of her as a tragic, sensual, intellectually limited woman who, it was said, didn't understand her most famous song, "Strange Fruit," which protested lynching. Hence, Griffin can cite Holiday's influence on many black women writers, poets, and singers, from Abbey Lincoln to Rita Dove, who have participated in black women's struggles to define themselves. This book drips with passion and admiration for the great Billie Holiday

This book drips with passion and admiration for the great Billie Holiday. I loved reading about not just the tragedy of her death but the joys of her living. She was a huge influence on American culture and a giant that many greats so eagerly stand on. I fell in love with Miss Holiday all over again and the poetic flow of the narrative. Thank you for sharing your labor of love and admiration!

Interesting but flawed

This book promises much but delivers little....which is a great pity since it could have been a much better book than it is. Part of the problem lies in the fact that it is not well written and is in severe need of editing. The book is repetitive in the extreme (see p. 181 for a glaring example - where we are told in two CONSECUTIVE sentences that Abbey Lincoln was under consideration to play Billie Holiday in a filmed version of Lady Sings The Blues). Other examples involve being told something, and then two or three pages later the same information is repeated. This is sloppy and shows that the author (or her editors) did not bother to proofread the manuscript in any meaningful way.
The other problem with the book is that it offers little in the way of insight. Sure the author has some ideas - but they are not enough to stretch out over the length of a book. It might have made an interesting presentation at a conference where it could have been presented as a 20 minute talk, but over the length of a book it becomes tiresome. Billie Holiday deserves better than this. Sorry to be so negative, but i bought this book with a great sense of anticipation and felt really let down by it. A real case of the critic not being up to the level of her subject.

A brilliant work

This is a brilliant analysis, rumination, meditation, on Billie Holiday. I believe the previous reviewers who did not agree with me missed Professor Griffin's use of jazz phrasing within the prose of her work, the reworking and repetition of themes to provide new insight. It is a technique that perhaps would only be understandable to a jazz lover, but it is part of the creative wisdom of this piece. This is the best work on Billie Holiday that I have ever read and I highly recommend it. And incidentally, Dr. Griffin is one of the most respected scholars of African American and American Studies, so she should never be compared to a first year graduate student. I suggest readers check out her other work as well.

Sensuous, magical and poetic

"A Piece of Heaven" is one of the most sensuous and poetic books I've ever read. The language is lyrical, full of vivid colors and imagery, tender and fiery at just the right moments. I couldn't put it down!
At the center are Luna McGraw, a divorced mother and recovering alcoholic who once lost custody of her teenage daughter, and Thomas Coyote, a big, gentle, mixed-blood Indian man who's trying to get over his own painful divorce. He falls in love with Luna right away and she is irresistibly drawn to him, but afraid of getting hurt and jeopardizing her fragile relationship with her daughter. Thomas's patient, gentle kindness seems too good to be true and Luna has to overcome her own fears and let him love her.
The setting is Tao, New Mexico, but it seems dreamy and timeless. This book deserves to be read again and again!

More than Just a Piece of Heaven

Barbara Samuel has done it again - written a book that has a wonderful story without being a formula of her previous book. Luna McGraw, a former therapist, a recovering alcoholic, and in the midst of trying to quit smoking is working in the floral department of the local supermarket in Taos, New Mexico. Luna's life is finally becoming balanced again when she meets Thomas Coyote, the man she's had a crush on for years, and when her daughter, Joy, comes to live with her. The story is lyrical and luscious. Samuel brings New Mexico to the reader in a way that makes you want to go there and visit if not to live.
I think it's a mistake to classify Samuel's books as "romance." They are more than that. But if you like romance novels (not that there's anything wrong with that), then fine. And if you don't, please try this one. You'll be pleasantly surprised to find this wonderful artist who takes words and weaves them into a literary treat.

A fantastic second hardcover book

In some senses I like this better than No Place Like Home, because it was not quite so cluttered with so many characters, and the narrative was in the third person. Both were excellent. In this novel we don't quite have the narrator's quirky sense of humour to cope with the terrible times in life, but in a lot of respects it is more upbeat. I love Luna and Thomas; they are a terrific couple, really HOT and Taos New Mexico is really brought to life. Her daughter is a wonderful character too and also the secondary characters Tiny and Maggie.
It is not a perfect book, but it is really excellent. I read it in one sitting, just like her first. This one will not make you cry gallons, though. It is much more upbeat. The use of Maggie the teen's diary is I think the only weak part in the book, since I really wanted more of a smoochy scene with Luna and Thomas at the end of the novel. But then I am an avid romance reader. One other minor flaw is the start of the book really lurched a bit and could have benefitted from a much better editor who could pick up the niggling little errors like what time the daughter's flight landed.
This book is an excellent cross over thought for women who like good fiction, and anyone looking for a book which affirms the healing power of love and the fact that god really does work in mysterious ways. All I can say is, I can't wait for her next one!

Indiana Jones and the Demons of Yore

Hardly the best collection from the early Lovecraft acolytes, but one that will certainly appeal to the fourteen-year-old in everyone who loves the Mythos. Editor Price is an admirable scholar of this particular niche in literature, here providing rarely anthologized stories tracing the early evolution of Lovecraft's ideas as practiced by his (generally) less famous pulp fiction contemporaries and fans.
The majority of these offerings are in the "freebooting adventurer meets his doom in forbidden archaeology" vein, a la Conan creator Robert E. Howard - two of whose stories (and only one really a Mythos tale) are duly reprinted, "The Thing on the Roof" and "The Fire of Assurbanipal." Robert Bloch's "Fane of the Black Pharaoh," not one of his best but still not bad, has a British explorer running afoul of an ancient Brotherhood protecting the secrets of a mad Egyptian prophet-king. Clark Ashton Smith's "The Seven Geases" concerns the hypnotic magic of a long-forgotten serpent race, who sacrifice men to their unspeakable dark god. August Derleth - you didn't expect he'd miss out on the act, did you? - collaborates with Mark Schorer on "Lair of the Star-Spawn," detailing a missing archaeologist's plan to stop those same serpent-people from releasing their demon-gods upon mankind. (Derleth is also represented by his own virtual plagiarism of Algernon Blackwood, in "Ithaqua" and "The Thing That Walked On the Wind.") E. Hoffman Price's "The Lord of Illusion" and Henry Hasse's "The Guardian of the Book" tell stories of extraterrestrial wayfarers through the gates of time and space, uncovering ancient and extra-dimensional secrets.
Other offerings include more straightforward horror stories, such as Henry Kuttner's "Bells of Horror" and "The Invaders," C. Hall Thompson's "Spawn of the Green Abyss," Carl Jacobi's "The Aquarium" and Duane W. Rimel's "Music of the Stars." Many of these, like Derleth's stories and Bertram Russell's "The Scourge of B'Moth," are essentially...rehashes of recognizable Lovecraft classics, though one or two are fairly original and worthwhile.
And for those who long for the occasional chuckle-break from all the melodramatically histrionic proceedings, Donald A. Wollheim's "The Horror Out of Lovecraft" and Fritz Leiber's "To Arkham and the Stars" will fit the bill - the latter, especially, as it comically rapes virtually every famous story Lovecraft ever wrote (with love, of course).
These aren't all the stories included in this volume, but they are indicative of the rest - certainly sufficient for anyone to determine whether or not Tales of the Lovecraft Mythos will be worth the "Price."
Now, if you'll excuse me, there's something at my window. It seems to be - oh, my God! Words cannot describe the utter blasphemous horror of the nameless dread somehow made flesh incarnate! Someone save me, before I succumb to that unutterable -

An Excellent Mythos Anthology

I'd like to type up ye first two paragraph's of Bob's fascinating introduction to this wonderful collection:

"Many readers of the present volume will recognize a more than coincidental similarity between it and August Derleth's TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS anthology that appeared more than two decades ago, in 1969. Derleth had compiled a prime collection of tales written by various authors under the influence of H. P. Lovecraft and employing the props of his system of 'artificial mythology' which Derleth (but not Lovecraft) called 'the Cthulhu Mythos.' To this collection Derleth prefixed a brief exposition of the Mythos as he understood it, so as to provide a context to help the reader better understand the stories that were to follow. It seems appropriate, therefore, in the present case to provide an analogous exposition, especially since the scholarship of the last decades has seen a major reinterpretation of Lovecraft's Mythos.
"As the title of this volume implies, there has even been a shift in nomenclature in regards to the Mythos. Especially in reference to the body of fictitious lore as it appears in the stories of Lovecraft himself, it seems better to refer to it as 'the Lovecraft Mythos' after its creator, rather than 'the Cthulhu Mythos' after one of the dread entities mentioned in it. As with most things, we must understand the origin and development of the Mythos before we can venture to say we know what it is. The definition of a thing includes its history. Hence, the following sketch of the Lovecraft Mythos and its evolution into the Cthulhu Mythos."

Price has thought long and hard about all of this, and his views are extremely interesting. Some of the introduction seems written to counter the hostility toward Derleth from they who have attacked and perhaps misunderstood him. "Interpreters from Richard L. Tierney and Dirk W. Mosig on have hotly repudiated this whole schema, derisively dubbing it 'the Derleth Mythos.' They saw Derleth's framework, especially in the Christian parallel, the imposition of a Good versus Evil schema foreign to Lovecraft's original, morally neutral conception. While such an understanding would indeed represent the grossest rendering of the Lovecraftian fabric, I am not convinced that critics have correctly understood Derleth at this point." Critics have derided Bob Price for his ideas as well, since the topic of the Mythos gets many people emotional, defensive and antagonistic.

Whatever one thinks of it, the Cthulhu Mythos is not going to go away. Inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, it has expanded like shoggoth-tissue under the hands of other writers. Some of the best of them, and some of the less than best, are between the covers of this fun book. They are:

One of the finest features of a Robert M. Price Mythos anthology is that he often restores the text as it was originally written. When Derleth published "The Aquarium," he excised those portions of it that concerned the Cthulhu Mythos. In TALES OF THE LOVECRAFT MYTHOS, those Lovecraftian portions are restored.

Some of the stories are not so great, one must admit. I was surprised at how bad the Mythos fiction of Henry Kuttner seems to me. And I found it questionable to reprint both of Derleth's tales together in one book, they are so similar to each other. (It was these two tales by Derleth that inspired Brian Lumley to write one of his finest Mythos tales, "Born of the Winds," which is reprinted in his fine collection, THE TAINT AND OTHER NOVELLAS).

But many of the stories are extremely good, such as "The Abyss," by Doc Lowndes. Writes Bob Price in his introduction, "'The Abyss' by Robert A. W. Lowndes has appeared more than once since its first publication in the February, 1941, issue of STIRRING SCIENCE STORIES. But all the reprints have featured an updated, revised version. Though we may trust the author's judgment and respect his decision to improve his work, we are pleased to satisfy your antiquarian curiosity by presenting the original 1941 version, in keeping with the pulp era focus of this book." The story is amazingly good.

"The Lord of Illusion" is the E. Hoffmann Price draft of the Lovecraft-Price collaboration, "Through the Gates of the Silver Key." Here we can see how much of the original text (not much!) was kept by Lovecraft when he wrote his version of the tale.

"The Horror out of Lovecraft" is little more than a piece of fan fiction, and it borders on parody. However, its author, Donald A. Wollheim, went on to create DAW Books, the paperback publisher who published lots and lots of Mythos novels &c. Both he and Doc Lowndes would probably have rescued H. P. Lovecraft's fiction from oblivion had Derleth and Wandrei not established Arkham House for that especial task. (But thank Yuggoth for Arkham House!!!!)

TALES OF THE LOVECRAFT MYTHOS stands as a wonderful tribute to H. P. Lovecraft and the way he inspired others to weave their works around his Mythos. It is a fun anthology that I have returned to again and again for the sheer pleasure of reading these amusing tales.

Worthy Collection of "Weird" tales from the Pulp Era

Robert Price does an excellent job of compiling seminal tales from the pulp magazines from the Weird Tales era. Intended as a companion piece to August Derleth's collection, "Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos", the focus here is on tales which spawned some of the more interesting concepts in what would be later termed the "Cthuthlu Mythos."
As you'd expect with any anthology, this collection is a bit of a mixed bag, but worthwhile for its inclusion of some of the more hard-to-find tales, which are often neglected in anthologies of the genre. Also of note is Price's lively discussion of the "Cthuthlu\Lovecraft Mythos."
In the end, this is a fine addition to the cannon of anthologies which attempt to demonstrate Lovecrafts's influence over the "weird fiction" genre and the group of writers who contributed to Lovecraft's "universe."

Also to his credit, Channer largely resists the trendy name-dropping and product placements so common in this genre. Subplots of intrigue in the African American art world add substance without detracting from the pace. Jamaican author and poet Adrian Heath, a.k.a. Fire, has a "love at first sight" experience when he sees a woman with daisy buttons having trouble with her packages in New York. They flirt, thinking they will never meet again, but later end up at the house of a mutual friend, an artist named Ian. Sylvia is involved with another man, which breaks Fire's heart and sends him back to London. But neither of them can let their attraction end, and later they have a dangerous affair. Ian's love-hate relationships with Fire, his mother, and women in general become the catalyst for the rest of the story. First novelist Channer reveals his characters' idiosyncrasies in poetic description. The dialog, full of Jamaican slang, takes a little getting used to, but the culture and backdrop are so finely scripted that readers will feel they are in Jamaica. Sensuous and sometimes outrageous love scenes interspersed with the stirring emotions of the characters keep the pages turning to the very end. Colin Channer has written the most beautiful, moving and prolific novel. I hesitate to call it a love story, although I certainly is, because it is no much more. It is romantic, erotic, sensual and thought provoking. He introduces us to an eclectic cast of the most interesting characters. Then he takes us on an excursion from the U.S. to London, Jamaica and back; and entertains us royally along the way. Colin gives a voice to many of the thoughts that we all have had but could not put into words. At one point Fire, a main character is having a discussion with his lady and she asks if he likes hip-hop. He responds that he likes it a little but will not purchase it to keep in his personal space because" hip-hop is the only black music that doesn't have a healthy engagement with women. It is not self assured when dealing with women" and I thought that's it. That's exactly what bothers me about it. If you think romance and more importantly love is "a second-hand emotion". Read this book.

DIFFERENT KIND OF READING EXPERIENCE

Fire was an incredible character. I was truly turned on by his intelligence, passion, humbleness and sense of respect for women. I felt that this novel was more about the quality of a man and less about his relationships with women. That which really pulled at my heart strings was his relationship with Ian. I saw this as the major relationship in the novel, with his relationship with Sylvia and Blanche being secondary. The interaction between these two friends who grew up together and had their own issues with each other was a compelling part of the novel.
I also enjoyed the fact that the main character was someone other than an African American. The Jamaica history, ritual and culture gave the novel a very unique twist. To that extent, for those of us who associate Jamaica only with Bob Marley, it was a cultural experience as well.

This is a very informative book on the history of shania and her family. It tells the story of her troubled past and all the hardships she had to overcome in order to be the person she is today. The book is a little outdated and will not cover much of her life after about 1998-99. Overall this is a great book to learn about the life of one of the greatest cross-over country singers in history.

THIS GIRL HAS COME A LONG WAY

This book was better then I expected and the one thing that I really like was the author took actual quokes that Shania had made over the years to tie everything together. He didn't over praise her nor did he bash her but showed how far she'd come from singing in a Las Vegas style place in Canada to recording one of the best selling albums in Country Music history. The photos were great and over all, it was worth reading.

surprisingly tasty

Picked it up waiting in line in an east-kansas wal-mart. Couldn't put it down. I was expecting your garden-variety teen idol trash that you usually read while waiting in line to pay for your Funions and Blue Star Ointment. I picked it up for the cover shot of Shania, but kept it for the intensity of the words that lay behind the photo. Gray is obviously a guy as passionate about Twain as I am. To him, the scribe, I would like to say: "Keep scribblin'". After tossing a Carmex and a pack of Chiclets in my bag, I gladly paid the blue-vested cashier and rushed home to learn the rest of the story. Thank you Shania, for the music, and Mr. Gray for the courage to bring her story to us!
On Her Way is a must-read for anyone who waves the young-country flag.

If you don't get this book...

Is it possible to rate a book higher than 5 stars? When I first read this book, my first reaction was anger. I was mad, because I had never heard of most of the information in this book. This stuff SHOULD be in the public domain. Why hasn't the media reported on any of these studies? Then I thought about it. If this stuff really does work, many companies stand to lose significant billions of dollars in revenue from the sale of ritalin and aderall.
My next reaction was great joy. Finally, there was hope. No drugs, and still helpful. This was too good to be true. So, I tried it. First on myself (I was diagnosed as hyperactive and put on ritalin when I was 5 - there was no ADHD yet in those days.). After a week of supplementing, I found I was able to concentrate like never before. Both the quality and quantity of my work have greatly improved. I figured if it helped me, maybe it would help my son. He has sensory integration dysfunction, ADHD, and a few other problems. I started supplementing him on Sunday. When I dropped him off to school the next Thursday, his kindergarten teacher took me aside and asked if my wife and I were doing anything differently with him, therapy wise. At first, I forgot about the LCP's and said no. I asked her why. She said that it had been my son's best week of the school year (it was April). He was concentrating much better. He was able to complete his school work. He was speaking much better and much clearer. He was able to follow directions. He was getting along with the other kids. He had far fewer fits. In her words, it was like we had transformed him into a different child. I then remembered the LCP supplement and told her about it. We came to the conclusion that since that was the only different thing, that must be responsible for the difference. Our family life is also improved. He has fewer fits. He is able to handle change much better. When he wants to, he is able to concentrate much better. He is also learning at a much more rapid pace and has caught up to and surpassed many kids his age, academically.

The LCP Solution

The nutritional supplements/LCP's described by Dr. Stordy and Malcolm Nicholl have improved the quality of our family life, since they've helped our youngest child, Kelli, so much. Efalex (one of the LCP's described in the book) has helped Kelli progress in speech and other motor activities way beyond our expectations -- with no adverse side effects. Her brain just seems to work better when she is taking LCP's. Our Kelli is now almost 8 years old. She was diagnosed with Apraxia (also called Dyspraxia) about 5 years ago. Because of this apraxia, she was not able to learn to speak by imitating others, as most children do. She had to learn to pronounce every sound and every blend during hundreds of hours of speech therapy. After one year of this therapy, I was getting very discouraged at her slow progress. Then I heard of Dr. Jacqueline Stordy's research and development of Efalex, a homeopathic medicine that helps lubricate the synapses/brain wires by providing extra amounts of tuna and other oils (this is truly a layman's description!) Kelli began showing dramatic improvements within just 6 weeks of beginning to take Efalex. This book discusses how changes (increased pressures) in our lives could be one cause of the dramatic increase in the number of children now diagnosed with disabilities. The authors present info very concisely on the developing brain's nutritional needs. (I only regret that this book was not available years ago so I would have known how beneficial LCP's are to pregnant and lactating women!) They discuss ways to recognize ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia/apraxia), and ways to make life easier for these children and their families. The importance of networking (especially via the Internet) for parents of children with disabilities are emphasized -- and specific resources are listed.
After Kelli had taken LCP's for just a few months, I was still amazed at how many ways Kelli was showing improvements. I wrote Dr. Stordy to congratulate her on her abilities to positively affect so many children with brain disabilities. She arranged to meet Kelli and I when she was next in our area. It was a pleasure to meet such a woman who combines being so personable and scientifically knowledgeable! Kelli instantly liked her. Dr. Stordy reminded me of a concerned grandmother who wants the best for everyone in her family. (In fact, her research to develop Efalex began because she wanted to help family members with night blindness and dyslexia.) More and more nutritionists are coming to agree with Dr. Stordy's discoveries. I highly recommend this book for anyone who cares for a child who has trouble speaking, reading, or focusing. The numerous personal stories shared throughout the book made it even more interesting (Kelli's story is on page 287). Parents share success stories of awesome and unexpected improvements their children made after beginning to take the LCP/EFA supplements she developed. It's heartwarming for me to see how motivated she was to perfect the development of supplements that would so positively affect so many children.

This book is a must read for anybody with a child with any type of a childhood disorder, not just the ones mentioned. (Dylexia-ADD/ADHD/ and Dyspraxia) I am a grandmother who was looking for a way to help my grandson who was diagnosed with Verbal Apraxia. I started down the long road to learn about LCP's and their benefits for children. I joined a listserv that is discussed in this book called Speech Diet. There were numerous testimonies to the fact that LCP supplementation of some form is helping these children. In layman's terms, LCP's help their neuro transmitters to make the connection, so they no longer have so many faulty wires. Many of these disorders, the cause is never known. I say that God must have gotten one of the wires crossed. Knowing the how does not seem to matter so much, but knowing how to help these children does. I focused on how to best help my grandson. Oh how I wish Dr. Stordy's book would have been available then. She has answered so many questions, offered various forms of products available on the market, and could have saved me many days, weeks, months, of research on my own. I have always followed Dr. Stordy's research throughout my studies of LCP's, so I was very eager to read her book. She has a wonderful reputation in the LCP world, and her name is used often in referring to LCP's, which are sometimes called EFA's. (Essential Fatty Acids) Her book brought many things into perspective for me and was well worth the wait. Dr. Story and her co-author, Malcolm McNicoll, have done a wondeful job of explaining how LCP's can benefit not only these children, but everybody. When you have finished reading this book, most of your questions should be answered.

Thomas Ashley-Farrand has practiced mantra-based spiritual disciplines for twenty-five years and is an expert in the use of Eastern mantras, including Hindu, Buddhist, and Tibetan. Outstanding entry level introduction.

I was fortunate to have this CD recommended to me by a friend. Having had no prior experience with sanskrit or mantra, I couldn't believe my luck once I'd listened to this CD. Not only is it structured so anybody can learn, there is also a list of the 'seed' sounds, explanations and english translations for each mantra, plus a guide on repetition, intention, spiritual practice, and a glossary! And all this for under $15. Each mantra is spoken word by word, before being intoned.

Having practiced some Tai Chi and Qi Gong its important when dealing with energy to feel secure with the integrity and calibre of the teacher. As most learning is done by modelling the teacher I can't think of anyone better than Thomas Ashley-Farrand for getting that start in Sanskrit Mantra. He has extensive experience and is authentic, and that promotes the full benefit of these amazing energy sounds and vibrations.

These are words of power; and this CD is great value. I also purchased the companion book, but this is not necessary to get your start. This CD stands on its own.

TWO WORDS: THIS WORKS!!!

I used the Lakshmi (for prosperity) and Ganesha (for removal of obstacles) mantras from this book to help me find a job. My unemployment benefits were about to run out and I wasn't finding anything. Despite no background in the industry I am now in, on the 40th (the last) day of my practice, I was hired in an entry level position that will soon lead to more money. Previously, I was getting second interviews, but losing out to other people with more experience.

There is nothing in my resume to suggest that I had an office background or barely even computer skills. I am looking to take a class and explained that in the cover letter and interview. Yet the woman who interviewed and hired me, for some reason, thought I had an extensive background in both! I can't help but feel that the mantras helped me overcome this significant barrier hiring-wise. Now I am using a Saraswati mantra from the book to help me with the learning curve of my new job and another mantra from the book for self confidence and strength which feels VERY powerful and I only just today starting using it. [I also improved my chances of getting hired by scheduling my interviews when the moon was NOT "void of course." See Jim Maynard's Celestial Guides or other resources to know when this is.]

I feel I am only just scratching the surface of what this book can help me do in a variety of areas of my life. I read all kinds of metaphysical books and try to adjust my thinking, but find it hard to break old habits of being fearful or limited in my thinking. What I love about this book is this: it gives you something concrete to DO everyday, twice a day that seems to work, regardless. I spent $13 on a mala to help me count my mantra repetitions and probably did only about 20 minutes of work twice a day. If I had done even more, I think my outcome would have been even better. Yet, from where I started, this is a huge victory for me.

As the author of the book states, mantras don't take the place of, in my case, doing the usual job search actions. However, there is no doubt in my mind that using mantras made all the difference in the outcome. It even, I think, steered me around a deceptive, (what I thought was a) sure-thing job with another company. It turned out that they had gone through five people in a very short time in the position. Not a good sign. I'll leave the descriptions of this book to other reviewers. What I wanted to know when I was deciding to get this book and looking at people's reviews of it was what their outcomes of doing the mantras were. I hope mine will help others to get this book and take this fantastic journey!

Powerful!!

I came across Thomas Ashley-Farrand's book on healing mantras when I was going through a difficult period in my life. After reading his book, I immediately took on the 40 day decipline to solve my problem. To tell the truth I didn't know what to expct in the beginning, but when I miraculously received the answers to my prayers on the 40th day of my decipline, I must say I was caught by surprise by the power of mantra chanting.
Chanting mantras has definetly changed my life forever, for the better. Now, I have this powerful tool in my hand that I can use any time to solve any problems that I encounter or improve any aspects of my life.
His books are well-written, clear and easy to understand. I highly recommed this book to anyone who desires to improve any aspects of their life. I am sure that anyone can improve their life for the better with these POWERFULL MANTRAS!!
