Animals as Guides for the Soul: Stories of Life-Changing Encounters, by Susan Chernak McElroy

In her New York Times bestseller Animals as Teachers and Healers, Susan Chernak McElroy movingly explored the wide and enriching horizons of human relationships with animals. In this new volume of reflections and true animal stories, she invites us to broaden and deepen that relationship.

While living with her husband and animals on a farm in Oregon, McElroy pondered the ancient bonds that connect humans and animals: the healing gifts of animals, the genius of people who talk to them, and the power of animal messengers. She also asked herself the tough questions that engage every true animal lover. How can we soothe our anguish and guilt when a loved animal suffers or dies? How do we atone for our mistakes? When are animals prisoners and when are they fulfilled? Is it moral to eat other beings? And how can we go about transforming our relationship with animals?

Through daily experiences with the animals around her and those in her dreams--along with compelling true stories sent to her by readers--McElroy began to find answers. She discovered that animals are guides in the development of our souls. A frail llama teaches lessons of joy and unconditional love; a barn cat proves that service need not be imprisonment but fulfillment; a mortally injured hawk infuses a cancer patient with renewed strength and faith; an attentive rabbit awakens an abused child from a trance of sadness; and a skinny white horse does more for a damaged six-year-old boy in one hour than any human has done in six years.

In this deeply personal yet universal testament to the profound connection between animals and humans, there is wisdom and blessing. As the author reminds us, the fingerprint of God is often a pawprint.

From Publishers Weekly
In her Animals as Teachers and Healers (1997), McElroy attributed her recovery from cancer in part to a kitten's grace and to her totem animal (Gaia, a wolf), who helped her visualize healing. Here, she explores spirituality and communication in the human-animal relationship. McElroy describes her family at Brightstar Farm in WyomingAincluding the cats Bear, Evinrude and Mirella; Arrow, the dog; Phaedra, the llama who taught her about love; and Pumpkin, the cockatoo. There are heartwarming stories from readers, chronicling their own interactions with animals. McElroy discusses the death of a pet, grief and guilt over the loss and how to deal with it. A missionary fervor seems to pervade her plea to transform our relationship with animals, as McElroy seeks to formulate a creed that will put humans and animals on an equal footing. Whatever one thinks of that belief, few will deny that McElroy offers bountiful food for thought and meditation. Author tour.

From School Library Journal
YA-Looking at the relationship between humans and the animals in their lives, McElroy asserts that "Nothing that happens between humans and animals is separate from what happens in every other aspect of human life. Who we are with animals mirrors who we are." Through vivid anecdotes of her life on an Oregon farm, and with touching stories shared by readers of her previous book, Animals as Teachers and Healers (Ballantine, 1997), the author writes sensitively about grief and remorse experienced at the loss of pets; euthanasia; emotional pain occasioned by witnessing cruelty to animals (and ways to address these situations); the ethics of using animals in service to humans; the meaning of animals when they appear in dreams; and the joyful lessons animals can teach. Not simply a personal statement, the book relates these concerns to cultural changes, as Western science and spirituality are now outgrowing many old beliefs about the psychology, intelligence, and emotional nature of animals. Recognizing and respecting the complexity of human ethical concerns regarding animals, McElroy does not push a particular agenda but attempts to understand and tolerate the different positions people may take. This is an invaluable resource for teens wishing to understand and explore their feelings about animals, and to make informed and appropriate decisions concerning their relationships with them.

From Booklist
In a gentle and interesting series of vignettes, Susan McElroy charts a life in which animals form a fundamental part. Seeing life as a table, she feels that animals must have a seat at the table, neither above nor below humans but on equal footing. Yet this book is not anthropomorphic--it does not assume that animals feel what we feel--rather, the author teaches us to find joy in animals, to get a "dose of enchantment" from our interactions with them. Speaking of the soul as the "unseen, often disowned inner guardian of our lives," the author relates a series of stories (both hers and her correspondents') of specific incidents when animals brought grace and healing to the storyteller. Although several of the tales veer into the realm of psychic communication with animals, the majority of the text speaks of the warm affirmation of life that is found in relationships with animals, recommending the book to libraries with well-used animal sections. Sweet inspiration, heart warming tales... a masterpiece!
By Duaa Anwar
This book touched me at a very deep emotional level. It is THE best book written on the subject, covering all aspects of relationships between humans and animals, from acts of heroism to telepathy to life-long partnerships. This is not just a collection of stories, but an in-depth discussion of how our world views animals, and what we can do to improve conditions for them. I am already a lover of nature and animals, but this book opened my eyes to things I have not known or seen before.
This is not a recommended reading for someone who does not appreciate the earth, but for people whose hearts are ready to accommodate the creatures that share with us the planet and are contributing more to our souls than we realize.

This book has lovely stories and heartfelt insights.
By A Customer
If there's anything animals can teach us, it is not to be cynical. Even a dog, abused and abandoned, can be rescued and learn to love again, something too many humans cannot grasp or accomplish. This book has deep insight into the place animals take in our spiritual life, something ancient people took for granted. We have lost sight of this fundamental truth, and books like this will help us rediscover it. Remember, humane means treating animals well, too.

The Perfect Gift for an Animal Lover!
By NiceGuy1
After reading her first book, Animals as Teachers and Healers, I was surprised yet happy to find that Susan Chernak McElroy's next book was just as spiritually enlightening, entertaining, and thought provoking. Animals as Guides for the Soul belongs in every animal lover's library. (I received this book as a gift and stongly recommend it for those seeking the perfect present for an animal lover friend or relative.)

Susan Chernak McElroy is a beautiful writer who weaves her own stories about animals with those of other people. I could say that I enjoyed this book for the stories alone -- but McElroy goes beyond storytelling and fearlessly writes about highly sensitive issues related to animals and their humans such as vegetarianism, euthanasia, animal abuse, and death and bereavement. This is more than a "feel good" book. McElroy hides nothing, even her own philosophical questions over animal issues or her very personal emotional struggles concerning the animals she has known in her lifetime.

This book was a true joy to read. I have become a committed Susan Chernak McEloy reader and have already begun reading her book on wild animals, Heart in the Wild.

The Genome War: How Craig Venter Tried to Capture the Code of Life and Save the World, by James Shreeve

The long-awaited story of the science, the business, the politics, the intrigue behind the scenes of the most ferocious competition in the history of modern science—the race to map the human genome.
On May 10, 1998, biologist Craig Venter, director of the Institute for Genomic Research, announced that he was forming a private company that within three years would unravel the complete genetic code of human life—seven years before the projected finish of the U.S. government’s Human Genome Project. Venter hoped that by decoding the genome ahead of schedule, he would speed up the pace of biomedical research and save the lives of thousands of people. He also hoped to become very famous and very rich. Calling his company Celera (from the Latin for “speed”), he assembled a small group of scientists in an empty building in Rockville, Maryland, and set to work.
At the same time, the leaders of the government program, under the direction of Francis Collins, head of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health, began to mobilize an unexpectedly unified effort to beat Venter to the prize—knowledge that had the potential to revolutionize medicine and society.

The stage was set for one of the most thrilling—and important—dramas in the history of science. The Genome War is the definitive account of that drama—the race for the greatest prize biology has had to offer, told by a writer with exclusive access to Venter’s operation from start to finish. It is also the story of how one man’s ambition created a scientific Camelot where, for a moment, it seemed that the competing interests of pure science and commercial profit might be gloriously reconciled—and the national repercussions that resulted when that dream went awry.

From Publishers Weekly
In May 1998, biologist Craig Venter announced that he was founding a company, Celera, that would sequence the genome by 2001, scooping the government's Human Genome Project by four years. This inflammatory announcement sparked a race that was as much about scientific ego and public recognition as about unlocking the so-called book of life. Shreeve (Nature) focuses on the tensions between academia and industry, and the rancor that ensued when Venter, who had previously headed a nonprofit research institute, changed camps. The synthesis of business and science posed new questions: can one patent the entire genome? if so, is protection of intellectual property antithetical to the advance of science? Industry is controlled by the bottom line; academia is chained to the politicians who control funding. Both models must battle a public that doesn't understand the intricacies of the research. Add to this the race to make one of the ultimate discoveries, and you get a mudslinging battle of egos. To back this up, Shreeve gives a healthy dose of the molecular biology involved in clear and vivid terms. He gives readers a fly-on-the-wall view of the scientific posturing and agonizing work behind the revelation of the genome's sequence. Shreeve is more concerned with providing a good yarn than answering the questions these events provokes, and the narrative meanders at times, but it gives a compelling look at the politics and business interests that drive science.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
On Charles Darwin's birthday -- February 12 -- in 2001, two groups of scientists announced simultaneously that the human genome sequence had been completed. The public consortium, involving teams from six countries, published its results in Nature and made them immediately available on the Internet. Craig Venter's company, Celera Genomics, published its paper in Science. Those announcements, although premature (only two rough drafts were available, accompanied by some preliminary analyses), marked one of the few uncontroversial moments in the quest for the human genome sequence. Almost everything else, from the ownership of the results to the molecular and statistical methods used, was the subject of sharp conflict. The title of this book, The Genome War, is only partly exaggerated. No casualties were reported, but all the psychological ingredients of a war were present and are documented in the book. The subtitle is a joke, I hope. The Genome War has something in common with Les Liaisons Dangereuses. In Laclos's novel, the apparent goal of the characters -- to seduce a human being -- is little more than a pretext for a cruel game of power. Two centuries later the pretext has become grander -- the goal no longer centers on a single person, but on the DNA of the species -- but the game is no less cruel. Through 26 dense chapters, Shreeve displays for us the intricate game of personalities and ambitions that ultimately led to the completion of the Human Genome Project. Great stories need great characters. Shreeve chose Craig Venter, and in this choice lies the appeal of the book as well as its main limitation. Venter, or at least the Venter whom Shreeve describes, is the herald of glamour, efficiency, and free enterprise. He enters the book onboard his yacht, and from that moment on, any scientist with "home-cut hair" who wears "whatever old sweater and slacks first presented themselves to him on waking up" has a hard time. Big projects, big money, big rewards for the investors; everything related to Venter is formidable, never mind that certain pages of the book are too much reminiscent, for my taste, of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. On the other hand, to offer a suitable stage for such a character, Shreeve continuously has to create dramatic situations. Often he does so by reporting private conversations and very personal thoughts, which in many cases he cannot have learned from the horse's mouth. As a result, the readers simply do not understand what cocktail of fiction and nonfiction they actually have in their hands. More important, crucial aspects of the story and other key figures -- notably John Sulston, the head of genome sequencing at Britain's Sanger Institute -- are left in the shadows. I doubt that the average reader will realize how important it has been to ensure that the human DNA sequence remains freely available to all (despite and against Venter's wishes). Far too few words are spent to explain that Celera could put together its results only by using the data produced and made available to all by the public consortium. In brief, this is not the most balanced or rigorous book on the Human Genome Project. However, some of its pages are worth reading. I liked this image of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory: "In the hallways and stairwells hang photographs of the original apostles of the new science: Delbruck himself, Salvador Luria, Crick and Watson, Barbara McClintock, Jacques Monod, Alfred Hershey . . . forever young and cocksure, their eyes bright from the birth of ideas that will take their older, grayer selves to Stockholm." From Bookmarks Magazine
Though he might be admired for his lofty scientific goals, Venter is not a well-liked man. At the time in question, the government called him "Darth Vader." Shreeve merely describes him both as "an inspiration" and an "opportunistic maniac." Genome War pays close attention to this ego-driven biologist. Despite his facade, he comes across as a complex man with deep insecurities. Shreeve, who gained full access to Celera, handles technical information well and reveals the inner bowels of the company. We see the human genome war exclusively from Celera's battle lines, but this perspective (and Venter's often flat portrayal) barely detract from a compelling story about the search for our genetic make-up. To be continued, for sure, with battle lines possibly redrawn.

And now for the other side
By Granger Sutton
Several books have already covered many aspects of the race to sequence the human genome. These books were either written by outsiders with limitted access or in the case of The Common Thread by an insider from the public human genome project. For the first time this book gives the perspective of someone who had intimate access to the people, premises and meetings at Celera Genomics. As an insider at Celera I can vouch for the accuracy of the events covered in the book that I was present for as well as the spirit of the endeavor captured by this book. While I am undoubtedly biased, I found the quality of the narative for this book to be better than that of its rivals and the content more compelling. Shreeve also covers the concurrent public effort and does a nice job of explaining many of the technical challenges in an understandable fashion, but what is unique to this book is the story from behind the scenes at Celera as well as some in depth descriptions of the people involved. If you are at all interested in the whole story about this moment in history you need to read this book!

A complex story well told
By Bosco Ho
This is a ferciously well-written account of the race to map the human genome, one of the most sordid and expensive races in the history of science. Virtually alone amongst the books available out there on the genome race, this book tells the story from the point of view of Craig Venter. Not only that, but James Shreeve had a complete fly-on-the-wall view of the inner workings of Celera, allowing Shreeve to give a full-blooded account of the implosion of Venter's dream, that of becoming the Bill Gates of Biotech.
Shreeve has done the impossible by pulling the threads of this immense story into a tight coherent narrative. At the end of the story, we understand how Venter ended up in the embarassing situation of negociating a so-called "tie" in the race for the human genome. Shreeve has a novelistic eye for detail in painting memorable portraits of the many people involved in the story. The science is vividly introduced when needed, but the complex financial and political moves are also explicated with authority. This is very very good writing.
Although Craig Venter has often been demonized amongst scientific circles, it was always an open question whether Venter was the devil incarnate, or an incredibly naive scientist who made one stupid faustian bargain after another. While there is no doubt that Venter is a brilliant man, Shreeve' account portrays Venter as a financial masochist, a victim of financial forces beyond his understanding.
In the preface, Shreeve explained that he had originally wanted a balanced account of the race as he tried to get access to the head of the public Human Genome Project, Francis Collins. He was refused. Because of that, Shreeve has structured the book as a character study of Venter, where we are privy to all his inner trials and tribulations. From being embedded in the private side of the race, Shreeve introduces a subtle bias in the account. The private researchers at Celera are fun and daring, even glamorous, whereas the public scientists are inefficient, stodgy, yawningly boring white-lab coats, especially when they talk about the ethical stuff. In my experience, it's been the opposite. I know researchers who have come back into academia because industry research was so achingly boring.
One big gripe I have with this book is that Shreeve glides over why the public project was so fixated on trying to keep the map open, free and accessible. Shreeve makes the leaders of the public project sound like shrill ideologues, constantly harping on over some kind of utopian ideal. This subtle bias ignores the heavily documented, though much ignored, literature over the pathological behaviour of the pharmaceutical industry. A commercial monopoly over the human genome would have been a disaster for public health (as opposed to rich men's health), and Celera came close to destroying the fragile consensus in academia science.
Apart from this gripe, I do recommend that you read this book if you want a sophisticated guide to one of the most fascinating collisions between commerical and public science, as well as a superb study of scientific ambition.

Pure joy! A science writing masterpiece.
By Amazon Customer
If you read only one science book this year, it has to be James Shreeve's inside view of the race to sequence the human genome. The story of this tumultuous competition between the prestigious Human Genome Project and the brash visionary Craig Venter is a joy ride. Shreeve's irreverent, charming and ultimately thrilling tale is a masterpiece of science writing. The white coats (and white hats) drop away in this book as Shreeve reveals the majesty of science for what it has always been, a very human story. Bravo!

Rites of Passage: Odyssey of a Grunt, by Robert Peterson

A raw, powerful account of an infantryman’s life during wartime– complete with all the horrors and the heroism . . .

Robert Peterson arrived in Vietnam in the fall of 1966, a young American ready to serve his country and seize his destiny. What happened in that jungle war would change his life forever. Peterson vividly relives the tense patrols in the Viet Cong-infested Central Highlands, the fierce firefights along the Cambodian border, the ambushes and enemy charges. Daily he and his fellow grunts put their lives on the line, forced to follow orders blindly from higher-ups solely interested in reaping their personal glory.

Yet out of the deadly hell of Vietnam came a brotherhood–forged in blood and courage, sacrifice and survival–of men who continuously risked their lives for one another, whatever the odds. Rites of Passage is a shining testament to their valor.

I had emerged from a drunken and emotion-filled thirty-day leave at home, nursing a hangover but ready for the next step in my journey through life. After planing from Madison, Wisconsin, to O'Hare to San Francisco, I took a helicopter from the airport across the bay to Oakland. The Golden Gate Bridge was shining in the warm California sun as we passed over it. Once on the ground I counted my money, then flagged down a cab and told him to get me to Army Replacement Depot, wherever it was.

"Goin' to 'Nam, huh, soldier? All ones on your profile, I bet."

I nodded and grinned. "Eleven B Ten. Light infantry, headed for 'Nam."

"You look like an intelligent young fella. You know you don't have to go. There are lots of ways around it, even now. You could disappear to Canada."

"Desertion--that's a capital crime. I could face a firing squad. Not much future in that."

"Not if you never come back. Oh well, I'm just making conversation. Just something to think about."

"I know, and I have thought about the options, but I was raised to face things, so here I am."

As we pulled into the main gate I spotted some of the guys I had spent the summer with in Fort Polk, Louisiana.

"You can let me out here, man." I gave him a five and told him to keep the change, but he said, "Nah. Have yourself a couple of beers before you leave and keep your head down. Good luck, son."

I hefted my duffel bag onto my shoulder and got into line with the others. Mock, Miller, Doolittle, and I had endured advanced individual training in the same company at Fort Polk and now would be shipping out together. We exchanged handshakes and insults as the line moved into the building and processing began. Two days later, after numerous injections and indoctrinations, hours of hurrying, then waiting, we were called into yet another formation.

"Group Three, grab your bags and head for the bus. You are shipping out. Move!"

My heart quickened, but I was glad the damned waiting was over and ready to get started.

The sleek Braniff 747 lifted off the runway at Travis Air Force Base a few hours later. The pilot pointed the jetliner west and we began to chase the sunset across the sky on the first leg of our journey--a journey to a different world.

We landed in Honolulu during the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen and headed into the terminal for a two-hour layover. There we sniffed out a cocktail lounge and quaffed more than a few drinks, toasting John Wayne, Audie Murphy, and America until it was time to go. We staggered back onto the plane, then began opening the small airport booze bottles we had procured and mixing it with the pineapple juice being served. A few drunken hours later, I began to fade and fell into a stupor. When I came back to reality we were descending into Clark Air Base in the Philippines.

After refueling, we reboarded. As the plane taxied to the runway, smoke began billowing out of the right engine, forcing the pilot to turn back to the hangar where we got out quickly. No great damage was done but the repairs took several hours. I spent the time trying to sleep in the dilapidated terminal while my head throbbed and my stomach churned. Finally we boarded once more and began the final leg of our quest. Next stop--Tan Son Nhut Airport, Saigon, Republic of Vietnam.

As we began to descend and circle, I noticed that the land seemed to be covered with water. Must be the Delta, I mused. We came in fairly high, then dropped quickly and hit the tarmac hard, bouncing and shuddering our way down the runway. The plane finally stopped about seventy-five yards from the nearest metal hangar and the troops began stirring, reaching for their bags and hats.

"Welcome to Vietnam. Make sure you get all your bags and personal belongings. Good luck."

The flight attendant sounded like she meant it. She smiled forlornly at us as we headed out the door--into Vietnam. I felt like Alice stepping through the looking glass.

As I stepped out onto the portable stairs I felt like I was in a sauna--a very smelly sauna. Sweat beads formed immediately on my face and arms and I stopped to get a breath. Heat waves were shimmering off the tarmac and the acrid smell of jet fuel and smoke from distant fires filled my nostrils and overwhelmed my senses. Welcome to Vietnam, indeed. I flashed one last look back at the flight attendant, who gave me a worldly look and mouthed, "Good luck."

I turned back to the task at hand. I knew my life would never be the same from this moment on. This was the initiation into my Rites of Passage. Miller moved past me quickly, panting and half-dragging his bag.

"Oh, come on, Pete, let's get into the hangar. Maybe they've got air conditioning." I hoisted my bag and we headed to the warehouse-style terminal where the others were gathering. By the time we reached the shade I was panting and sweat was running off my body.

"It's gotta be a hundred degrees or more. I thought Louisiana was bad, but I've never seen anything like this," I said to a drooping Mock while Miller nodded. "Fuckin' place doesn't have air. How do they work here?"

A specialist, 4th class (Spec 4) began yelling at us, "All right men, form up here and move out the rear door. We've got buses waiting to take you to Bien Hoa. Move out."

We loaded onto the olive-drab Army buses (circa 1945) and headed out of the main gate and into Saigon. Heavy screens covered the open windows, and as none of the troops had planned to throw anything from the bus, it became obvious that the screens were there to prevent anything from being thrown into our midst. Since the U.S. Army rarely planned things like this in advance, the protection had undoubtedly been added following an incident, probably a tossed grenade, I thought.

"Hmm, screened windows. Wait a minute, now, let's see if I've got this straight. We're here to help defend the South Vietnamese against the Communist invaders, right? Why do we need protection from the people we're protecting, who should be our friends?"

"The sarge back at Polk said there were enemy everywhere. He never knew who he could trust, Pete. It's a pisser of a war, but it's the only one we've got," Miller told me.

As we passed through the outskirts and into the heavily populated downtown, I was taken aback by the squalor and abject poverty in which most of the Vietnamese were living. The houses were a few pieces of lumber and cardboard held together with cord and flattened metal beer and soda cans. Many of the locals were cooking on the dirt streets in front of their hovels, squatting near the black pot over a small fire. The smell of their food and its spices and the resulting smoke hung heavily in the humid air. There was also a stronger, rancid odor--perhaps garbage, I thought.

As we moved along I spotted several locals relieving themselves along the streets. They merely dropped their trousers, did their business, then moved on. Therein was the source of much of the odor. We continued along slowly through the bustling heart of the city, moving past thousands of bikes, motorcycles, scooters and a few hundred small cars and trucks. I noticed hundreds of young Vietnamese men walking the streets or riding scooters. Why weren't they in the military? I pointed them out to Mock.

"They couldn't all be on leave, could they?" He shrugged and shook his head slightly. Mock hadn't said much since we left the plane; must still be in shock.

The bus left the city and continued to the compound at Bien Hoa, where we entered through an opening in the barbed wire and watched the gate close behind us--I immediately thought of prison movies where a busload of new convicts pull into the yard. We unloaded, stood in formation until we were called, then went to our assigned barracks and waited to be called again. That night we walked around the encampment to familiarize ourselves with what our life might be like for the next year. Barbed wire enclosed the perimeter, with fighting positions fortified with sandbags and logs every thirty feet. The fighting bunkers were large enough for two or three men to sleep in while one stood guard.

"It would take a helluva force to try to overrun this place. There's a lot of firepower here. The artillery is always on call and I saw some tanks just down the road." Doolittle cupped a cigarette as he spoke. Mock answered, "All I want is a nice typewriter to fire and a desk to drive around and I'll be happy for twelve months."

"Why didn't you go for the enlistment option: an extra year, but a guaranteed job?"

"I took my chances, Pete. I didn't want to do the extra time, so I gambled that I'd get a soft job. We still got a chance when we get assigned to our final unit."

"Yeah, but it's like karma or fate for me. I've always known that I would be in a war someday. As I sat there listening to that Spec 4 in basic tell me I was eligible for almost every school they had, something was telling me, 'It doesn't matter what you do. You're going to 'Nam and fight.'

"So I turned him down. It pissed him off, so he said he was putting me in the infantry. I don't know if he had that much power or what, but here I am."

"So, was it karma, or did you influence the outcome with your preconceived notions?"

"I see your point and I can't really answer your question. I remember a few years back when one of my teachers stated, with damned good foresight, that Vietnam would be the site of the next war. As he spoke I felt a numbness in my heart and something clicked in my brain. I knew, then, that I would be in it. This would be my war. Whether I then consciously set out to make that come true or it had already been predestined is the question. But I know what I believe. I believe it was my karma . . . my destiny."

I'll never smile again
By P. Kelley
An incredibly detailed, truthful, moving, and painful personal account of war as experienced by a front line soldier in the Vietnam War.
This book was obviously written from extensive notes taken by the author when he had the time in the field to write down his feelings and experiences. For reasons of his own, the book was not published until after his death in April 1994.
This book will have immense meaning to anyone who has experienced the hell of war, as well as, anyone who wishes to understand the sacrifices our fighting men and women in battle must endure. President Bush and his top advisors should read this book before they send our treasured youth to fight another war. If those in positions of highest political authority, after reading Sgt. Peterson's war memoir, still decide we must go to war then they will understand we must fight the war to the finish with the best military tactics and strategies available not hindered and defined by vague political considerations.
I recommend this book to all. I sincerely thank Mr. and Mrs. Peterson for their service to our country.

why was this not a bestseller?
By ron smith
one of the best memoirs i have read on the vietnam war.
maybe even one of the best books i have ever read.
peterson's daily account of his vietnam experience is meticulously described, providing a view of his metamorphosis from an average midwestern farm boy to combat-weary grunt that is brilliant. reads more like a novel in the sense that the character in the first few chapters could not even fathom the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of the character at the end.
also provides compelling illustrations of the frustrations and inner conflicts felt by an average american required to follow orders which he is morally opposed to and intuitively wary of.
the book grows darker by the page and the reader is drawn into his sense of impending doom and constant fear.
i highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the vietnam war.

One of the best books I've ever read
By A Customer
Robert Peterson takes you with him as he recounts his experiences as a GI in Vietnam. Peterson paints a vivid picture of what life was really like in the Nam. The hell of marching day after day, fighting the elements while searching for the elusive VC. Never knowing where you'll be heading to next. Forming bonds stronger than blood and then watching those men die, and then getting up to do it all over again the next day. It was a real eye opener for me, fighting in Vietnam was nothing like I expected, not like the movies at all. It all seemed so pointless. The more you read the darker it gets.
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I took it everywhere I went and I had trouble putting it down. Robert Peterson was an amazing writer and Rites of Passage was an amazing book.

No Room for Error: The Story Behind the USAF Special Tactics Unit, by Col. John T. Carney, Benjamin F. Schemmer

“John Carney is one of the few heroes I have.”
–LT. COL. L. H. “BUCKY” BURRUSS, USA (Ret.)
Founding member and Deputy Commander of Delta Force

When the U.S. Air Force decided to create an elite “special tactics” team in the late 1970s to work in conjunction with special-operations forces combating terrorists and hijackers and defusing explosive international emergencies, John T. Carney was the man they turned to. Since then Carney and the U.S. Air Force Special Tactical units have circled the world on sensitive clandestine missions. They have operated behind enemy lines gathering vital intelligence. They have combated terrorists and overthrown dangerous dictators. They have suffered many times the casualty rate of America’s conventional forces. But they have gotten the job done–most recently in stunning victories in the war on terrorism in Afghanistan, which Carney calls “America’s first special-operations war.” Now, for the first time, Colonel Carney lifts the veil of secrecy and reveals what really goes on inside the special-operations forces that are at the forefront of contemporary warfare.

Part memoir, part military history, No Room for Error reveals how Carney, after a decade of military service, was handpicked to organize a small, under-funded, classified ad hoc unit known as Brand X, which even his boss knew very little about. Here Carney recounts the challenging missions: the secret reconnaissance in the desert of north-central Iran during the hostage crisis; the simple rescue operation in Grenada that turned into a prolonged bloody struggle. With Operation Just Cause in Panama, the Special Tactical units scored a major success, as they took down the corrupt regime of General Noriega with lightning speed. Desert Storm was another triumph, with Carney’s team carrying out vital search-and-rescue missions as well as helping to hunt down mobile Scud missiles deep inside Iraq.

Now with the war on terrorism in Afghanistan, special operations have come into their own, and Carney includes a chapter detailing exactly how the Air Force Special Tactics d.c. units have spearheaded the successful campaign against the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Gripping in its battle scenes, eye-opening in its revelations, No Room for Error is the first insider’s account of how special operations are changing the way modern wars are fought. Col. John T. Carney is an airman America can be proud of, and he has written an absolutely superb book.

From Publishers Weekly
Colonel John T. Carney Jr. is the first commanding officer of the U.S. "special tactics" units. Ably assisted by West Point graduate and veteran Ranger Schemmer, he has written a timely book that's part memoir and part history. Carney was an air force officer whose career was going slowly until he was assigned to Combat Control School. A descendant of the WWII pathfinders the men who jumped first and marked the way for paratroopers the combat controllers were an overlooked bunch in the air force. Stationed on a base in Texas, the hardworking Carney turned his lackluster command into a top-flight outfit that soon got noticed. Nicknamed "Brand X," Carney managed to get his command attached to the new Delta Force only after a lot of infighting among the services. After even more rigorous training, the combat controllers were an integral part of the failed rescue attempt of the U.S. hostages in Iran in 1980. Carney pulls no punches in strongly criticizing official stories of the success of Operation Urgent Fury, which liberated Grenada. By 1989, when American forces overthrew Manuel Noriega in Panama, the special forces had learned even more from their operations and acted more in unison, even though some army units still didn't want any of Carney's men attached to their units. (Carney is quick to point out how these units foundered when his men were kept out of action.) Carney's men were used to locate Iraqi Scuds during the Gulf War with varying success; operations in Somalia and Haiti, among others, reinforced the need for special operations units such as those Carney describes. His dramatic tales place special operations history in perspective, particularly as the war in Afghanistan has been led by special forces units. Of America's 277 combat deaths in six major operations since 1980, 36% were special forces.

From Booklist
Carney participated in the disastrous 1980 special-ops mission to rescue American diplomats in Teheran. By that year, Carney had redirected his career from coaching football at the Air Force Academy to organizing the service's "combat control" units--the specialists who set up airstrips in hostile territory. Carney did so in Iran and gives here (with the help of professional writer Schemmer) his eyewitness account of what went wrong when Delta Force arrived at his improvised airstrip. His point in baring problems he experienced (he also flays with equal force the deadly mistakes made during the 1983 invasion of Granada) is to illustrate lessons learned and the increasing reliance on special-ops units by the U.S. military. Must Reading for Students of Military History
By Ray Calafell
I am privileged to have received and read an early copy of this book, a timely reminder to all Americans that "Freedom is not Free." Colonel John T. Carney, Jr. (Retired), is President of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a very special charity that provides full scholarships to the children and families of fallen special operations soldiers, sailors and airmen. As a member of a fraternity of men known as "Quiet Professionals," it must have been terribly difficult for him to put into words acts of incredible courage which have heretofore been closely held knowledge among very few people. On the verge of retirement from the Air Force after a disappointing and stalled career, Carney gets a word of advice from an old friend, changes his career track and begins a journey down a lonely road towards the creation of a special Air Force unit that expertly handles air assets during special operations missions. The road for his "Brand X" unit is full of obstacles, but with slow acceptance among some of the Army's Special Forces legends, like Colonel Charlie Beckwith and Lieutenant Colonel Lewis "Bucky" Burruss, he doggedly champions his unit's abilities and repeatedly demonstrates the utility of having a trained combat controller in situ with the Army's Special Forces teams. Having previously been a football coach for the Air Force Academy, Carney's program for his special tactics teams is as tough as any training the services can muster, including HALO, HAHO and scuba training. Skydiving is fun. HALO and HAHO with special operations forces in the dead of night, in all weather conditions, and with 200 pounds of equipment is deadly serious business and not much fun at all. The men whose job is to maintain that edge now have a safety net for their families: the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. They can do their jobs comfortable in the knowledge that the net is held by an American hero, Colonel John T. Carney, Jr., founder of the Air Force Special Tactics teams.

No Room For Error
By Kindle Customer
Colonel Carney and Ben Schemmer did an excellent job of describing the realities of U.S. contingencies in the last 40 years. As much as we try, the theory of the "purple suit" military and interoperability, i.e., all services working together, has not been achieved. The saving grace of this unfortunate situation is that our military forces usually demonstrate the flexibility to overcome these shortfalls and prevail. I commanded a rescue squadron which was tasked in an important support role for several of the operations that
Colonel Carney wrote of in this book and several that were not included. The Grenada mission was not the only one where we were unsure as to which command was really in charge. A well written book about a segment of the U.S.Air Force and our military forces which has not received the recognition and appreciation which they deserve. Colonel Carney is one of the Air Force's finest!

Jackie Robinson: A Biography, by Arnold Rampersad

The extraordinary life of Jackie Robinson is illuminated as never before in this full-scale biography by Arnold Rampersad, who was chosen by Jack's widow, Rachel, to tell her husband's story, and was given unprecedented access to his private papers. We are brought closer than we have ever been to the great ballplayer, a man of courage and quality who became a pivotal figure in the areas of race and civil rights.

Born in the rural South, the son of a sharecropper, Robinson was reared in southern California. We see him blossom there as a student-athlete as he struggled against poverty and racism to uphold the beliefs instilled in him by his mother--faith in family, education, America, and God.

We follow Robinson through World War II, when, in the first wave of racial integration in the armed forces, he was commissioned as an officer, then court-martialed after refusing to move to the back of a bus. After he plays in the Negro National League, we watch the opening of an all-American drama as, late in 1945, Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers recognized Jack as the right player to break baseball's color barrier--and the game was forever changed.

Jack's never-before-published letters open up his relationship with his family, especially his wife, Rachel, whom he married just as his perilous venture of integrating baseball began. Her memories are a major resource of the narrative as we learn about the severe harassment Robinson endured from teammates and opponents alike; about death threats and exclusion; about joy and remarkable success. We watch his courageous response to abuse, first as a stoic endurer, then as a fighter who epitomized courage and defiance.

We see his growing friendship with white players like Pee Wee Reese and the black teammates who followed in his footsteps, and his embrace by Brooklyn's fans. We follow his blazing career: 1947, Rookie of the Year; 1949, Most Valuable Player; six pennants in ten seasons, and 1962, induction into the Hall of Fame.

But sports were merely one aspect of his life. We see his business ventures, his leading role in the community, his early support of Martin Luther King Jr., his commitment to the civil rights movement at a crucial stage in its evolution; his controversial associations with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Humphrey, Goldwater, Nelson Rockefeller, and Malcolm X.

Rampersad's magnificent biography leaves us with an indelible image of a principled man who was passionate in his loyalties and opinions: a baseball player who could focus a crowd's attention as no one before or since; an activist at the crossroads of his people's struggle; a dedicated family man whose last years were plagued by illness and tragedy, and who died prematurely at fifty-two. He was a pathfinder, an American hero, and he now has the biography he deserves.

Amazon.com Review
In baseball and beyond, 1997 has been the year of Jackie Robinson, the 50th anniversary of his obliteration of the game's color line, and a time to reflect on a marvelous man whose heroism and decency cut far beyond the foul lines. Arnold Rampersad, a Princeton professor who's edited the poetry of Langston Hughes and the essays of Richard Wright, and collaborated with tennis great Arthur Ashe on his powerful memoir Days of Grace, steps up to the plate here with the first truly comprehensive Robinson biography. It's an important accomplishment, ripe with historical and social insight without losing sight of the human being at its core. Thoroughly researched--Rachel Robinson gave the author access to her husband's personal papers--and filled with fascinating new detail, the book, like its subject, consistently takes the extra base, thrilling with its overall skill, depth, and perspective.

From Library Journal
Rampersad (literature, Princeton; coauthor, with Arthur Ashe, of Days of Grace, LJ 6/15/93) presents a penetrating characterization and thorough analysis of Jackie Robinson, the first black to play major league baseball. Drawing on personal letters, interviews, research projects, archival materials from the Jackie Robinson Foundation, and input from Robinson's widow, Rachel, he reveals Robinson as a boy, man, athlete, husband, father, pioneer, community leader, businessman, and Civil Rights activist. "Jackie underwent the trauma and the humiliation and the loneliness which comes with being a pilgrim," the author writes. Though well researched, with some vintage photographs, the book lacks standard footnotes and bibliographical references. Still, this work supplements recent biographies by Maury Allen (Great Time Coming, LJ 11/15/94) and Rachel Robinson (Jackie Robinson, LJ 11/1/96). Highly recommended for both public and academic libraries.?Edward G. McCormack, Univ. of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, Long Beach

From The New Yorker
This considerable book arrives just in time to save the man from his own legend: despite certain limitations, it is a sports story for adults.... Professor Rampersad never suggests that the accident of history which pushed this professional athlete into the forefront to national attention was particularly cruel or ironic, but his tone throughout the book remains so distantly calm and studious as to make us wonder whether he may not be concealing a judgement or a reservation about his subject.

Brings the Legend who was Jackie Robinson to life.
By Mike Powers
In his excellent biography of Brooklyn Dodgers infielder Jackie Robinson, author Arnold Rampersad has painted with a crisp and lively narrative an objective, balanced , and candid portrait of a legend. Here is seen the complex, driven man that was Jackie Robinson, "warts" and all. He was the proud and fiercely determined African American athlete, extraordinarily gifted in at least four sports; a sometimes overly sensitive man who despised racism always fought against it, even in the pre-Civil Rights era of the 1930s and 1940s, and even at the risk of conviction by military court-martial. He used an unconquerable will and ambition to became a football, baseball, basketball and track star at Pasadena Junior College; one of the greatest football running backs in UCLA history, and ultimately, under the guidance of legendary Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey, the first African American professional baseball player of the modern era. Rampersad traces Robinson's struggle against racism during his early Dodger years; it is a poignant and compelling story.

The book also shows the more human side of Robinson: a quiet and sensitive man, and a political activist whose fight for racial equality was consistent throughout his life; a wonderfully loving husband but sometimes distant father; and a businessman of tremendous integrity. At Rampersad's hands, Jackie Robinson is a genuinely heroic and admirable person. This is a book which allows the reader to really get to know its subject. It is one of the finest biographies I've read in many years. Highly recommended!

Pulls its punch
By Jay Stevens
Professor's Rampersad's biography of Jackie Robinson is a book that's needed now. It's incredibly informative about the man behind the legend. (I think Roger Angell's blurb sums it up: "[the] book arrives just in time to save the man from his own legend.") However, Rampersad doesn't focus much on Robinson's baseball life, and he seems to be holding back judgment on Robinson despite the opportunities to do so.
Before digging in the dirt, I want to say that this book is crisply written and chock full o' facts about Robinson's life. Rampersad obviously had the full support of Robinson's widow, Rachel, and her views are constantly felt throughout the book. It's almost told from her point of view, in fact, and thus feels like a intimate, loving homage to the man.
But there are some issues and character flaws in Robinson that Rampersad shows or hints at, but never fully explores. For example, we never truly felt the force of the hatred leveled against Robinson during his efforts to integrate baseball. There are a few quick references to name-calling, a couple of pitches thrown his way, but what made Robinson so bitter, what filled him with the hatred that so obviously ate at him later in his career? It's implied, rather than shown, as if it were too terrible even to discuss. On the whole, the chapters on Robinson's baseball career are woefully thin. It's clear that Rampersad is not much of a baseball fan - including a few factual errors about the sport's rules and game play - and it's a shame, because baseball is as much about its stories as it is about its action.
And then there's Robinson's role as Civil Rights' leader, which Rampersad describes, but withholds all judgment on. Why exactly did Robinson favor the Republican Party, even long after it was obvious that the GOP proved to be the party of segregation and white privilege? Also Rampersad only hints at the acrimony and in-fighting between Robinson and such organizations as the NAACP and SLCC.
Presented with the facts supplied by Rampersad, it seemed that Robinson was a vain, proud, and sensitive man, who was extremely susceptible to flattery, especially from powerful whites. It also seems that his success in baseball convinced him that he would be successful in other areas, especially politics. But it seemed that he was over his head in that area, always a tool of the professionals, Nixon and Rockerfeller.
Notice I say "seem" a lot! That's because Rampersad never states any of this outright, he only hints at it - enough to acknowledge these characteristics, but fails to explore them. Rampersad never digs into Robinson's psychology, never explains or contemplates motivation, cause, or effect of any of Robinson's endeavors. It's so easy on Robinson that I suspect Rampersad wrote this book for Robinson's widow - or maybe her approval of the book was necessary as part of some deal for use of her letters. Or perhaps Rampersad was too aware of Robinson's near-saint-like stature in our nation's culture to find any fault with the man. In any case, he definitely pulls all punches, and the book, though informative, feels incomplete.
Yes, Robinson was a hero. Yes, he was courageous. But he was also a man, full of frailties and inconsistencies, just like the rest of us. To withhold judgement does him as much diservice as it does us...

This book cooks!
By A Customer
I wasn't a huge baseball fan when I started this book, but I'd heard of Jackie Robinson. I used to think I knew who he was. Well, you don't anything until you read this book! The comforting text inches over every exciting aspect of Jackie Robinson's life. It was written using information that Jackie Robinson's wife provided for the first time. The topics range from rising above racism to sharing personal family experiences. If you love baseball, this book is absolutely for you. However, if you're not really into sports (like me), then you'll still adore this true-life story that seems almost unreal.

There’s Virginia Senator Lerner himself, rumored to have had a sexual relationship with Nadia–and half the women in D.C. under ninety. . . . Clarise Emerson, producer/director of Ford’s Theatre and ex-wife of the Senator, whose nomination to head the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is now threatened by the scandal . . . Jeremiah Lerner, her aimless, hot-tempered son, said to have been sleeping with Nadia when his famous father wasn’t . . . Bernard Crowley, the theatre’s controller, whose emotions overflow at the mention of the crime . . . faded British stage star Sydney Bancroft, desperate for recognition and a comeback, and armed with damning information about Clarise Emerson . . . and other complex characters from both sides of the footlights.

From Publishers Weekly
The spirit of Chandra Levy hovers over Truman's latest Washington, D.C., mystery (Murder on the Potomac, etc.), which, despite a sometimes confusing plot and little suspense until the climax, should be as successful as other recent entries in this durable series. When the body of congressional intern Nadia Zarinski turns up outside the stage door of Ford's Theatre, D.C. police detectives Mo Johnson and Rick Klayman, who happens to be a Lincoln buff, are assigned the case. Nadia worked in the office of Senator Bruce Lerner, ex-husband of Clarise Emerson, head of Ford's Theatre and nominee for chair of the National Endowment for the Arts. Once Clarise determines with Klayman's help that her son, Jeremiah, was the last to see Nadia alive, she appeals to former attorney Mackensie "Mac" Smith to represent him. But there are other suspects as well: theater controller Bernard Crowley; aging, past-his-prime British actor and artistic director Sydney Bancroft; and Senator Lerner himself. Mac and his police cohorts find these ambitious power seekers an unpleasant lot. As usual, the location takes center stage, and the fun lies in seeing how the author uses the national landmark in the service of the drama. In this case, the Lincoln theme pulls the plot threads together and brings weight to the proceedings. The performance may be a bit contrived, but fans will enjoy the show.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-When Washington, DC, police detectives Mo Johnson and Rick Klayman arrive at this famous venue, they find the body of Nadia Zarinski, a congressional intern romantically linked to Senator Bruce Lerner. Fate throws in a twist when the detectives discover that the senator's ex-wife is directing the theater's current production. Their son becomes the number one suspect when the footprint from a pair of shoes he has matches the one found in the alley alongside the deceased. The investigation includes segues into discussions about Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth, and other historical tidbits. Suspects include just about everyone, with the murderer turning out to be someone who is easily overlooked. The best "scene stealing" belongs to Sydney Bancroft, an older, scheming, once-handsome leading man whose better days were long ago but who can't give up the stage. Without the graphic violence or vulgar language sometimes common to this genre, this mystery is lively and interesting.

Uncomfortably familiar: Nadia's past as an intern (and perhaps more) for a right-wing senator may figure in her murder.

An Inside the Beltway Thriller
By James E. Carroll
In her latest novel, Margaret Truman stages "Murder at Ford's Theatre" with a cast drawn from recent headlines and past novels in her Capital Crime Series. The murder of Senate intern Nadia Zarinski, romantically linked to her boss, outside the historic theatre now run by the senator's ex-wife and Hollywood producer, Clarisse Emerson, who is preparing for her confirmation hearing as the next chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts sets off a media frenzy all too familar in the nation's capital. The case is so sensational that Truman's favorite Washington couple, George Washington University law professor Mackensie Smith and his wife Annabelle, are compelled to play leading roles once again. Supporting cast members and Lincoln buffs, detectives Klayman and Johnson, representing the Metropolitan Police Department, and Sydney Bancroft, aging British thespian and Ford Theatre artistic director, add colorful moments to this fast paced drama.
It is impossible for me to criticise Truman's work. Her attention to detail especially about local landmarks and legends in Washington, DC provides the reader with a sense of place that locals recognize and visitors remember. I don't doubt that Truman strolled the cafes and galleries of Dupont Circle sipping latte at Kramerbooks & Afterwoods researching the details about historic Ford's Theatre that she got correct right down to the spelling.
Above all, "Murder at Ford's Theatre" is first rate suspense. Whether you live inside the infamous beltway or not, add this book to your list right away.

A great mystery set at Ford's Theatre in DC
By Dawn Dowdle
Nadia Zarinski, intern to Senator Lerner, is found dead in the alley out back of Ford's Theatre in DC. She volunteered time at the Theatre now and then. She was found by Johnny Wales, a stage hand at the theatre. The only eyewitness to her murder is John Partridge. He is an alcoholic and thinks he is a CIA agent. He was sleeping it off in the alley.
Detectives Rick Klayman and Mo Johnson are investigating this death. There are rumors that Nadia and Senator Lerner were involved. The Senator's ex-wife, Clarise, is the head of Ford's Theatre and was unaware that Nadia was volunteering time at the theatre. Clarise is also to be confirmed as the head of the National Endowment of Arts within the week.
The Senator and Clarise's son Jeremiah becomes a suspect in the murder when a previous boyfriend of hers mentions that Jeremiah dated Nadia. That information is confirmed by another source.
Mac Smith is now a professor of law. He is teaching a special class on Lincoln the lawyer. He was a criminal lawyer until a drunk driver hit and killed his first wife and only son. He is remarried to Annabel who was a divorce lawyer and now owns and operates a Columbia art gallery. Mac is asked by Clarise to assist Jeremiah when he is arrested. Mac and his former law partner Yale Becker represent Jeremiah.
Detective Klayman wonders if they haven't been hasty in arresting Jeremiah. He's not convinced that all the other suspects were sufficiently interrogated.
Mac and Annabel are surprised by the Senator's and Clarise's detachment from Jeremiah through this ordeal.
Detective Klayman is very interested in President Lincoln and attends Mac's class. They are careful to not discuss this case, just Lincoln.
I am very happy that Margaret Truman has returned to her Capital Crimes series. I like Mac and Annabel and always enjoy seeing Mac get involved in a murder investigation. They feel like very down-to-earth people to me. Like your neighbor next door.
The Senator in this book was very well written. He was very detached and always too busy to deal with the daily problems.
All of the peripheral characters were well constructed as well. In the end of the book, I found myself flip-flopping from thinking one person did it to another. I wasn't able to easily pick out the killer. A sign of a good mystery!
I highly recommend this book and all the books in this series. The fact that I know the DC/VA area that was discussed always makes it more interesting.

Delightful Addition to a Solid Series!

After a seventeen-novel run, you might think that Margaret Truman must have pretty well exhausted the possibilities for murder and mayhem on the Washington scene, but with "Murder at Ford's Theatre", she has found yet another fascinating new venue to explore in her popular 'Capital Crimes' series. Her real life premise? Restored to its original Civil War Era splendor and maintained by the National Park Service as an historic site, today Ford's is also a state-of-the-art, working theater run by the non-governmental Ford's Theatre Society. Fictional charismatic Clarise Emerson: former Hollywood TV producer, ex-wife of playboy Senator Bruce Lerner and presently a nominee for the Chairmanship of NEA is currently its producing director, but...aided by her new comptroller, Bernard Crowly...her primary concern is fund-raising and public relations, so she delegates the actual production mounting tasks to her staff of trained professionals including former Shakespearean matinee idol, Sydney Bancroft. When Sydney is a no-show at an early morning tech staff meeting, real life drama abruptly intrudes into Ford's make-believe world as a stagehand going out for a smoke stumbles over the badly beaten dead body of alluring volunteer intern, Nadia Zarinski. Seasoned police officers Rick Klayman and Mo Johnson 'catch' the case. As they pursue their investigation, among other confusing pieces of conflicting evidence, they uncover a romantic relationship between Nadia and Senator Lerner as well as one with his and Clarise's son, Jeremiah. After Jeremiah is arrested and charged with her murder, Clarise asks Lincoln scholar, legal expert and law professor Mac Smith and his wife Annabel...her close friends...to come to his rescue. In the novel's exciting denouement, their insiders' take on the tangled emotional environment at Ford's helps winnow out the real killer during a Gala evening at the Theatre while, on-stage, history almost repeats itself in a chilling tour de force performance by a madman.
Margaret Truman has such a marvelous flair for capturing the minutiae of Washington's history as integral addenda to her thoroughly engrossing mysteries. She successfully combines a solidly-crafted police procedural format with completely believable characterizations and plenty of fast action to always provide an extremely pleasurable reading experience. I was especially interested in the material that I found here about the Theatre itself as well as Abraham Lincoln which made "Murder at Ford's Theatre" a thoroughly enjoyable read for me.
