I'm the One That I Want, by Margaret Cho

Comedian. Icon. TV star. Role model. Trash talker. Fag hag. Gypsy. Tramp. Thief. Margaret Cho displays her numerous sides in this funny, fierce, and honest memoir. As one of the country’s most visible Asian Americans, she has a unique perspective on identity and acceptance. As one of the country’s funniest and most quoted personalities, she takes no prisoners. And as a warm and wise woman who has seen the highs and lows of life, she has words of encouragement for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider. With I’m the One That I Want, Margaret Cho has written a book every bit as hilarious, shocking, and insightful as she is.

Amazon.com Review
Don't come to this bitter, engrossing memoir for a quick and easy laugh. The material that Margaret Cho has turned to such riotous ends in her stand-up act has a very different flavor on the page. An unpopular child (okay, hated and reviled), Cho made friends with the drag queens who worked in her father's bookstore, soon becoming a fag hag, and finding this mutual attraction "both nurturing and powerful, sweet and sour, retail and wholesale." "Drag queens are strong because they have so much to fight against," writes Cho, "homophobia, sexism, pink eye." To support herself at the beginning of her comedy career, Cho worked at FAO Schwarz, sometimes moonlighting in phone sex. Occasionally the jobs would overlap, and she would find herself doing phone sex dressed as Raggedy Ann. There isn't much here about Cho's early success, but she does delve at length into her disastrous sitcom, and devotes many pages to her battles with her weight, with drugs, and with alcohol, and her hopeless relationships with men (none of the bisexual material from her stage act is included here). Cho's message is about self-esteem in the face of consistent opposition from her family, the network that aired a "Margaret Cho" sitcom but permitted her no creative control, and a society that rewards women for thinness, whiteness, meekness, and a shut mouth. --Regina Marler

From Publishers Weekly
Expanding on her one-woman show (and film) of the same title, comedian Cho mines her improbable life. The misfit daughter of Korean immigrants in San Francisco (who named her Moran, which she likens to naming a kid "Asshill"), she dropped out of high school, gaining success in stand-up even as she succumbed to self-loathing, substance abuse, bad boyfriends and the siren song of Hollywood. As star of the first Asian-American sitcom (All-American Girl), she was forced to diet herself into sickness even as the show strayed from her story and quickly foundered. This book runs into the inevitable challenge of converting performance into print; neither a script nor a fully fleshed-out memoir, it works episodically but ultimately fizzles. Descriptions of the endless lousy men in Cho's life, perhaps disarming onstage, become tedious on the page. Still, she finds humor in pathos. Working on a pilot with a sitcom writer, she held back the truth: "I was unemployed and trying to kick a sick crystal meth habit by smoking huge bags of paraquat-laced marijuana and watching Nick at Night for six hours at a time. Now, that's a sitcom." Cho knows how great comics tend toward self-destruction, finding it hard to come down from stage adulation. Still, her discovery of self-esteem and New Agey conclusions ("I discovered there was a goddess deep inside me") are something that an acerbic comedian like Cho shouldn't embrace without irony. (May)Forecast: Cho's five-city tour and radio satellite tour will bring her to the attention of her young, hip audience.

From Library Journal
Cho, the talented and witty comedienne who starred in All American Girl, the first Asian American sitcom, here adds to the growing list of celebrity autobiographies in a self-indulgent effort boasting all of the elements that make such works popular. She discusses her problems as a child, troubled teen years, dangerous drug habits, weight battles, and feelings about her one-woman show, which is now being well received by Asian Americans. Unfortunately, the book, which is adapted from her show, feels more like an exercise a therapist might have suggested than a serious autobiography. It is sexually explicit, which may make it inappropriate for younger readers, and contains an overabundance of obscenities apparently used more for shock value than substance. Cho's comedic wit does not translate well to print, and it seems that she could not decide whether to write for laughs or sentiment, resulting in an uneven blend. While this may have limited appeal to her fans, it is a minimal purchase at best. Not recommended. Rosalind Dayen, Broward Cty. South Regional Lib., Pembroke Pines, FL

Slow but sincere...
By Jezbel
I bought the book hoping to gain insight into the young and talented Margaret Cho. As a stand-up she has a quick wit and fantastic personal and political observations. But as an author she is not as clever, shocking or provocative as she thinks she is. She has a good story to tell. Suffering from low self-esteem, communications deficits with her family and a clear, uphill battle with prejudice, it's easy to see the obstacles she had to deal with and subsequently triumph over. But her story-telling abilities still need some work and polish. She should read more biographies and perhaps take some classes on story development. The first 2/3 of the book are a slow, predictable read. She tries to describe her history as though it was decades ago - with the cynical eye of time, age and perception. But, in fact, it's fairly recent history. Granted, she made it through, but hindsight is always 20/20. The story is not finished. The lesson may be yet to learn. I'm sure it was great therapy for her to pound out her lurid tale of a young life gone awry. But the constant self-loathing, self-pity, fast times, "sex-drugs-and-rock & roll" lifestyle is a tune we've all heard before. The deal is: she made it out the other side but that's the shortest part of the book! A quick fix at the end of the book tries to wrap it all up in a nice neat package - and we all know that's not the way life happens. I wish she'd spent more time on putting it all together, gathering up the pieces of herself and telling us how difficult (and in what ways) she re-connected the pieces of her life and her personality. How she mended fences, the relationship with her parents at present and what she wants from life. THAT would have been a book with a real ending, not just a pretty package.

Moving Autobiography
By Brett Benner
I think my biggest surprise with this book was how serious it was. I wasn't fortunate enough to be able to see the stage show on which the book is based, but much of her life although couched with some hilarious witticisms is painful and sad. Drugs, alcholism, abusive relationships, and a big old healthy dose of self loathing thrown in for good measure. Reading about "All American Girl" and the deconstruction of the show made me wince. As always I'm baffled at the far reaching stupidity of network and studio executives. I was really moved by the end of this book, and wanted to be seated next to her so I could give her a great big bear hug. Rock on Moran!

Dominck Dunne's captivating tale of a wealthy man and his mistress is loosely based on the story of Vicky Morgan and Alfred Bloomingdale. Whether you followed that story or not, you will find this book hard to put down.

By Vicki Gibson
I read the Beautiful Bad Girl first which is much closer to the actual truth so reading this was somewhat disappointing since a lot of this didn't jive with the reality. After reading Beautiful Bad Girl and the association with Ronald Reagan and his wife being best friends with the Bloomingdales, I no longer think that Nancy was soo adoring to Ronnie. I think she was keeping an "eagle's eye" out for anything hootchy kootchy around her husband so that his legacy wouldn't be tarnished. Half of his kitchen cabinet was involved with these girls and many deaths occurred after Vicki Morgan spilled the beans publicly thru her paternity suit; not just hers.

I remeber this Video and I am glad there is a book
By Kevin Weaver
I am appauld by the person whom posted a comment regarding that children have enough to deal with in the world. I am a survivor of Childhood Cancer and I wish that this was a book and video played in my class when I was sick.

I was picked on for having no hair, being bald in first grade, throwing up on the play ground and being laughed at.

What would you feel like it you were diagnosed with cancer and not sure if you were going to live to see second grade.

Charles Schulz was a great man, and he helped bring lessons to children and adults through his strip.

As a parent of a child who has been through leukemia treatment, I can't tell you how many times the video (didn't even know there was a book until now) of this story has been recommended to new parents, and for sharing with classmates of a leukemia patient. Along with our copy of "Sesame Street Goes to the Hospital," and Mister Rogers' "Going to the Hospital," this is part of our 'permanent collection.'

From Library Journal
When this book was first published in 1976, a Florida newspaper refused to advertise it as "too prurient for the general public." Happily, the book became a classic anyway and has gone through several editions over 25 years. This update merely strengthens its credentials as the best all-around sex manual for older adults. There is thorough coverage of the standard topics: the effects of normal aging, medical problems, and drugs on sexuality and how to overcome roadblocks; physical and emotional sexual fitness; singlehood and relationships; sexual enhancement tips; dating, remarriage, and one's children; and finding help. This new edition incorporates same-sex relationships more equitably. In addition, readers are given permission not to be strongly interested in sex a refreshing change from the "super-orgasms can change your life!" approach of so many sex manuals. Lewis is a physician and head of the International Longevity Center, and Butler is a clinical psychotherapist. Both have other books on aging to their credit. For all public libraries, no excuses get several copies. [The previous edition was featured in "Sex Texts Come Out of the Closet," a collection development feature in LJ 10/1/97. But if you are not looking for advice on HRT...
By Liz M
I hate to see this book represented by 1 reviewer giving it 1 star. I teach in a gerontology program and I found this book very useful in preparing my class on sexuality. The most important message I got from this book is that sex after 60 is normal and natural, but different from sex earlier in life. One point I did not see in my other reading--there is a discrepancy in the number of men and women that increases with age so that by age 85, there are 41 men for every 100 women. I have read many proposed solutions to this, all assuming that men have an innate lower life expectancy than do women. Dr. Bulter's approach is that men need to learn to take better care of their health so that they live longer. This was the most positive, pro-male solution I have read.

Well Written & Helpful
By Everyday Reader
"The New Love and Sex After 60" is a well written and helpful book. There is no question that older men and women may want to remain sexually active much longer than might have been supposed. The authors explain some of the normal changes brought about by aging and changing relationships. They also discuss possible issues brought about by illness. The tone throughout is upbeat and positive and the authors offer practical advice for maintaining a healthy intimate relationship. It's probably time for another revision that would cover a few more recent developments in medicine but this book is still worth reading.

Who knew? Sex can be better after 60!
By Sheila Pearl
For anyone turning 50 and beyond, this wonderfully presented book by Butler and Lewis provides the evidence that there is indeed "sex after 60" and offers information and guidance on having a satisfying sex life in later years. As a family therapist and life coach, I have conversations with people who are either afraid of getting older or are in the grips of the aging process and faced with many of the issues of aging and sexuality which this important book addresses. As we grow older, it is obvious that our bodies go through changes; but that is true of children becoming teenagers as much as women going through menopause or men needing viagra. Since changes are inevitable, we need guidance and reassurance about how to best cope with the changes and find ways to experience pleasure and joy, no matter what age.

I am using the Butler/Lewis book as an important resource for my own book which I am writing, also on issues of aging and ageism. As a woman approaching 70 myself, I can attest to the fact that sex after 60 can be wonderful and pleasurable. I'm thrilled that there are books like this available to the baby-boomers and even younger, so that we can all approach aging with delight and enthusiasm, not dread. Butler and Lewis have offered us an important document, as well as guidance, on what is true and NOT true about sex after 60. Their message is also my message: "life can be rich and full at any age." All I have to say about that is "WOOHOO"!

The Seduction of Water (Ballantine Reader's Circle), by Carol Goodman

Iris Greenfeder, ABD (All But Dissertation), feels the “buts” are taking over her life: all but published, all but a professor, all but married. Yet the sudden impulse to write a story about her mother, Katherine Morrissey, leads to a shot at literary success. The piece recounts an eerie Irish fairy tale her mother used to tell her at bedtime—and nestled inside it is the sad story of her death. It captures the attention of her mother’s former literary agent, who is convinced that Katherine wrote one final manuscript before her strange, untimely end in a fire thirty years ago. So Iris goes back to the remote Hotel Equinox in the Catskills, the place where she grew up, to write her mother’s biography and search for the missing manuscript—and there she unravels a haunting mystery, one that holds more secrets than she ever expected. . . .

Amazon.com Review
Carol Goodman's admirable second novel, The Seduction of Water, has much in common with her bestselling debut, The Lake of Dead Languages. Both feature heroines who are at crossroads in their lives and who choose to move backward and inward. In the first novel, the main character returns to teach at the woodsy private school where she had been a scholarship student, triggering the horrible repetition of the violence that had marred her senior year. In The Seduction of Water, the heroine returns to the woodsy hotel in the Catskills where her parents had worked, in the hope of uncovering her dead mother's secrets. Somehow, the book doesn't feel like a reiteration of the earlier novel, perhaps because the tone throughout is lighter and more sure.

Iris Greenfeder is a 36-year-old barely published New York writer and teacher whose long-term boyfriend, an artist, sees her schedule as strict and therefore will not spend the night, because he likes to get up and paint first thing every morning. When one of Iris's stories about her mother is picked up by a small literary journal with a well-connected editor, things start to happen for her. She becomes convinced that a summer out of the city, working as manager of the old hotel, will give her the perfect setting in which to pen a memoir of her writer mother, as well as an opportunity to look for the rumored manuscript of her mother's final book. But there are those who are just as determined to keep the dead woman's secrets in the grave. Only mildly suspenseful, and relying too much on coincidence, The Seduction of Water isn't the page-turner that Goodman's debut was, but patient readers may find it a richer and more satisfying novel overall. --Regina Marler

From Publishers Weekly
An aspiring writer delves into the long-buried mystery of her novelist mother's death in this silky-smooth novel by the author of The Lake of Dead Languages. Water, from Iris Greenfeder's perspective, is the Hudson River. She has a view of it from her five-story walkup in New York City's westernmost Greenwich Village, and it shimmers in the distance from the Equinox, the Catskills hotel where Iris grew up. Her father, Ben, was the manager at the Equinox; her mother, Kay, a former maid, wrote two fantastical novels there. Driving the plot is the not-so-simple question: did Kay write a third novel, and is it hidden at the Equinox? Back at the hotel for the summer, Iris plans to write the story of her mother's life and search for the missing manuscript. As she attempts to solve the mystery, she is abetted and thwarted by a large cast of characters, including her mother's famous literary agent, the mega-millionaire owner of a hotel chain, the daughter of a famous suicidal poet, an all-knowing gardener and the delicious Aidan Barry, whom Iris meets while he's still in prison. The novel's first-person, present-tense narrative fosters intimacy, though it somewhat undercuts suspense. More effective is the use Goodman makes of the Irish myth of the selkie-half-seal, half-woman-as told by Iris's mother. Mystery, folklore, a thoroughly modern romance, a strong sense of place and a winning combination of erudition and accessibility make this second novel a treat.

From Library Journal
Iris Greenfelder lives in New York City, but her roots are in a resort hotel in the Catskills, where she grew up as the only child of the hotel's managers. A struggling writer, Iris finally finds some success in re-telling the stories once told by her late author mother, the victim of a fire 30 years ago. Consequently, she decides to write a biography of her mother and returns to the hotel to work for a new management team while doing research and looking for a manuscript that her mother may have written before her death. The information that she uncovers is far from what she expected, however, and her digging upsets key people in her mother's past. With this exciting second book, coming close on the heels of The Lake of Dead Languages, Goodman establishes herself as a writer to watch in the field of literary thrillers. Sure to be in demand in most public libraries.

The Lake of Dead Languages Vs. The Seduction of Water
By Turquoise
Admittedly, this is a good, engrossing book. I am not going to recount the story because it's already recounted in many other reviews but I'm writing about what I think of the book since it may help other avid readers decide whether to give this book a try. First of all, if you'd read and like the Lake of Dead Languages by the same author then I urge you to try reading this. However, if you are still skeptical, then I will give you the following comparison pointers:
First of all, the Lake of Dead Languages is a thriller all the way. The story keeps you reading from the beginning to the end and there's no question at all that it's a page-turner. On the other hand, The Seduction of Water is a little more 'classic', the story somehow not moving as fast. This is because it is also a love story. Her descriptions are still chilling and morbid, but the reader is not as tempted to turn the page as much as the last book. When I read the book I feel that only half of the book is an element of 'mystery'.
If you are looking for a very fast page-turner , then this is not the book for you. In that case, read The Lake of Dead Languages.
Don't get me wrong. This is still a great book with a great storyline, it just goes slower, weaved with a love story that gives it a more 'classic' than a 'mystery' feel. However, the ending is suspenseful and I still highly recommend the book!

A book to savor
By A Customer
Once again, Carol Goodman has woven a world filled with complex, multi-dimensional characters, an absorbing plot, and a masterful use of language that made my time reading this book magical and something apart from my daily life. I often have four or five books going at once, but from the moment I picked up Seduction of Water, I was unable to leave the Hotel Equinox until reluctantly turning the last page.

A lyrical telling of one woman's search for truth
By Bookphile
Several years ago, I read Goodman's wonderful novel The Lake of the Dead Languages and it was one of those books that just stuck with me. I gave it to my husband to read and, shortly thereafter, stumbled upon this book and wondered why I hadn't yet read anything more by Goodman. While I found this book to be another lovely and lyrical tale, I don't think I liked it as much as The Lake of the Dead Languages, though that's not meant to be a criticism.

As with her previous novel, Goodman works several themes into the novel. The main character of this novel is similar to the main character in that previous work in that they are both women who appear to be in a sort of stasis. Iris Greenfeder, the protagonist of this novel, is somewhat aware that she is a soul in flux but she doesn't quite seem to know how to shake herself out of her torpor. Iris herself puts it best when she notes that her life is a series of "all buts": all but thesis, all but married, all but a writer. Her character exemplifies the trap that we all fall into in which we yearn for the things we really want in life but stay where we are because we know it, which therefor makes it safe. Unfulfilled in her career and her relationship, she is, however, reluctant to be proactive and seek what it is she desires.

A lot of her uncertainty is tied to the mysterious death of her mother, who was registered as another man's wife when she died in a hotel fire when Iris was young. Before her death, Iris's mother had written two of the planned three novels of trilogy and Iris returns to the hotel where she grew up, ostensibly to work on a memoir for her mother while seeking the manuscript for her mother's third novel. Iris, however, does precious little of either and, instead, spends the summer at the hotel engaged in an affair with an ex-convict who is her former student.

Though Iris's search for the truth about her mother is a central theme of the novel, her search for the truth in her own life is just as prominent. As her relationship with Aidan progresses and she begins to think about leaving her old and rather stultifying life behind her, she must face the truth about what she's made of her own life. Has she been so obsessed with what happened to her mother and why that she has forgotten how to live herself?

Like the main character in The Lake of the Dead Languages, Iris's quest is more internal and while it is tied to a mystery, the mystery is really secondary. Goodman writes eloquently about women who think they know what they want out of life but who don't quite have the courage to pursue it. It's a compelling theme and one with which I imagine many women can identify.

Fascinating look at a bygone era.
By mirope
This is generally considered to be the definitive biography of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra. Massie's expert storytelling is well-suited to the compelling story of the last Russian tsar and his consort. The history of Russia was no doubt changed by the deliberate myopia and general inadquacies of these two people. Nevertheless, Massie manages to uncover a more sympathetic side to the ill-fated duo. Massie's writing is as good as that of any acclaimed novelist - there's a fascinating and fastpaced plot, finely nuanced lead characters, an intriguing supporting cast, all against a beautiful background of a majestic bygone era.
This book was researched and written before the fall of the Soviet empire when the state archives were opened and new information about the Romanovs was revealed. Consequently, this book is necessarily incomplete, especially as concerns the execution of the royal family. Massie has since written another text called "The Romanovs: The Last Chapter" which devels deeply into the newly available data and the forensic studies that followed. Consider it an essential volume II to "Nicholas and Alexandra".

A true masterpiece...
By Cynthia K. Robertson
I started a love affair with European royalty while in junior high, and as luck or fate would have it, Robert Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra was published during this time. I was bitten by the Romanov bug and have suffered from this malady ever since.

Nicholas and Alexandra, the last Tsar and Tsarina of Imperial Russia, came from a distinguished royal pedigree. Nicholas was the son of Tsar Alexander III, and his aunt was Princess Alexandra of Wales. Alexandra was a Hessian princess and granddaughter of Queen Victoria. As youngsters, they fell in love and "Nicky" knew that "Alix" was fated to be his bride. Theirs was a true love match at a time when royal marriages were arranged for any reason but love.

Two events conspired to cause the Romanov tragedy. First, Nicholas was not a very strong-willed man. He let others dominate him (including his wife). When his father died suddenly at the age of 49, the young Nicholas was totally unprepared and untrained to be Ruler of all the Russia's. Second, Nicholas and Alexandra were very family oriented, and it was a crushing blow when their 5th child and only son was born with hemophilia. In desperation, they alienated much of Russia (to protect this secret) and fell under the harmful influence of Rasputin. Russia was ripe for revolution, and Nicholas and Alexandra were too blind to see what was happening in their own country until it was too late.

Massie does a stellar job of bringing Russian history to life in a way that reads like a novel. He also writes with a passion born of experience. When his son was born with hemophilia, Massie started researching how hemophilia affected the royal houses of Europe-especially the Romanov's. He details not just Russian history, but the history of this dreaded disease including various types of hemophilia, treatments, new advances, etc. The only negative about this book is in the timing. Massie wrote what was known in the late 1960's. But since the fall of communism and perestroika, we now know so much more about what happened to the Imperial family. Massie took this new information and finished the story in The Romanov's: The Final Chapter. One book should not be read without the other.

Nicholas and Alexandra is one of my favorite nonfiction books, and I find myself rereading it every five to six years or so. I enjoy it just as much with each subsequent reading. My original paperback was in such tatters that I finally treated myself to a new hardback copy. Even after all these years, the tragic fate of the Romanov's continues to haunt us.

very readable account of the life of the last Tsar
By A Customer
Massie's work is very readable; more like a novel than a biography. There were times I couldn't believe some of the intimate details could be real, for how would Massie know? But at the back of the book he has extensive notes indicating the sources for all the details including diaries and memoirs. I thought Massie did an excellent job illustrating the roots of World War I, especially the relationship between Nicholas and Kaiser William II. Also excellent was the way he makes the enigma of Rasputin understandable and how he reconciles the public disfavor and lack of understanding of the tsar and his wife with their noble intentions with the good of Russia in mind. In reading history it is easy to imagine that the participants were ignorant or oblivious to larger trends that would envelop them, especially in light of subsequent historical events. Massie's story brilliantly sheds light on the story of the last tsar such that the reader can genuinely understand the motivations of most of the participants. Very enlightening reading. I strongly recommend the book for anyone interested in Russian history or just looking for a readable story.

Thale's Folly, by Dorothy Gilman

As myriad readers will gladly attest, there is nothing more entertaining than a Dorothy Gilman novel, for the author of the beloved Mrs. Pollifax novels brings to her work a distinctive mix of romance and mystery that inspired the New York Times Book Review to say of a recent Gilman jewel, "Should delight you whether you're looking for smiles or thrills." That promise is honored--with dividends--in Thale's Folly.

At the request of his father, New York City novelist Andrew Thale tackles an odd assignment--to check out an old family property in western Massachusetts, neglected since Aunt Harriet Thale's death years ago.

Much odder still is what he finds.

Far from being deserted, Thale's Folly is fully inhabited--by a quartet of charming squatters, former "guests" of kindhearted Aunt Harriet. Elegant Miss L'Hommedieu, Gussie the witch, Leo the bibliophile, and beautiful nineteen-year-old Tarragon, who is unlike any girl Andrew has ever met in Manhattan.

Andrew is entranced by these unworldly creatures and their simple life. Yet all is not well in Thale's Folly. A thief breaks into the farmhouse, and an old friend of the "family" disappears. While the peace that appears to have been Aunt Harriet's only legacy to her companions is destroyed, Andrew and Tarragon are drawn into mysteries they cannot fathom. But, for the first time, Andrew begins to understand that love and loyalty are life's greatest treasures.

Once again, Dorothy Gilman enchants us. Thale's Folly is just as tempting as a delicious caper from the unsinkable Mrs. Pollifax.

The creator of the Mrs. Pollifax mysteries introduces a new protagonist?a struggling young novelist whose father asks him to investigate the family property left when Aunt Harriet died. There he finds a bunch of squatters and gets drawn into a mystery.

From Kirkus Reviews
One of the author's determinedly charming stories, apart from her Mrs. Pollifax series (Incident at Badamya, etc.). Andrew Thale, son of stuffy corporate V.P. Horace, has been asked by his father to look over the property in Massachusetts that Horace had inherited, in the absence of a will, from his reclusive Aunt Harriet Thale five years before. Horace has been paying taxes on the empty house and its 25 acres ever since and is now thinking of selling or developing the property. Andrew, author of two well-received novels, is in a creative limbo and has, in desperation, been writing the newsletter for Meredith Machines, the family business. He dutifully departs in a company car for the remote, potholed road that leads to the Thale farmhouse, which lacks heat, electricity and phone but is far from empty. Living there in contented penury are the strays Harriet Thale collected before her demise: elegant Miss L`Hommedieu, housekeeper-cook Gussie; passionate Marxist Leo, and beautiful young Tarragon. Andrew gets yet another surprise when he discovers his mother, who'd left Horace seven years ago, living happily in a cottage on the property. There are more odd twists in store for Andrewthe arrival of his father, the discovery of a hidden mill, but most important, the rediscovery of his creative self. A sweetly entertaining fairy tale sure to delight the author's many fans. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Charming and Warm
By Karen Bierman Hirsh
This wonderful book by Dorothy Gilman was my introduction to her world and I can't wait to get back in. Her 'Mrs. Pollifax' series is well known but this book is a gem to savored as well.
Thale's Folly center's on Andrew Thale, a young, frustrated writer and son of a very ambitious and driven company man (who does not take NO for an answer)who asks his son to look into some family property they inherited several years prior. Andrew reluctantly agrees to view the 25 acres of land that his aunt Harriet left to the family only to find the run down house inhabited by a rag-tag group of people.
He learns that his aunt used to take people in and care for them and the people living at Thale's Folly (not just the name of the property but also the way the Thale's view this excursion) are the people carrying on her legacy, living in fear that they will be discovered.
During his stay at Thale's Folly Andrew learns the true meaning of life as well as helps to solve a mystery or two. Along the way he meets some wonderful people including the enchanting Gussie, the beautiful Tarragon, the enigmatic and proper Miss L'Hommedieu amongst many.
The pace is quick, fun and riveting. I finished this book in a day and I greedily want more! A book to be savored, full of rich characters - I highly suggest brewing a cup of tea and reading this on a rainy day.

A Great Summer Read
By Rain
I read this book years and years ago and always remembered it. I had to own it myself; I think it's likely out of print but it's well worth the read. A charming story with the right amount of mystery/intrigue. You'll love the characters. It's the kind of book that you're sad to finish. It's not a heavy read but it has some heart and is an enjoyable story. It's not quite book club material for more serious readers but, unless you a total book-snob, you'll like this book.

the very best kind of folly . . .
By kellytwo
It's very true that a less-than-terrific book by Dorothy Gilman is still much more fun to read than an excellent one by a lesser light. This book is so well set-up that I fell head-long under its myriad charms, but kept falling out again for the strangest reasons. That's why the 4 rather than 5 stars.
Andrew Thale is sent by his businessman father to western Massachusetts from their home in Manhattan, to inspect a supposedly neglected property that had belonged to Aunt Harriet Thale, who died five years before the opening of this story. An unhappy young man, Andrew has suffered a nervous breakdown after a plane crash, causing him to have a monumental case of writer's block. Even though he's had two well-regarded mystery novels published, he seems unable to write anything at all anymore. Not even interesting tid-bits for the company newsletter, a position handed him by his father.
Off Andrew goes in the company Mercedes. Although not all that far away in hours or miles, once he finds the place, it proves to be centuries removed from today's world. For Aunt Harriet was a collector--of people who were down on their luck a bit, or had no other place to go, or were generally looked down on by Society. She assembled a truly great household of delightful eccentrics, and promised them that they could stay there forever. And so they have.
Miss L'Hommedieu could have arrived on a "Streetcar Named Desire" embodying as she does the ancient southern belle, wrapped in layers of chiffon, and sporting beautiful old-fashioned hats. She entertains her fellow householders by writing a paragraph of a new story and reading it to them every evening. Problem is, it's a different story every time, and she never continues any of them. She only does beginnings. To digress a moment--what wonderful beginnings they are, too! They almost make one wonder if perhaps Ms. Gilman had resurrected them from her younger days. If so, I do wish she'd finish some of them. They're wonderful! Back to the book . . .
Then, there's Gussie, who practices Wicca quite openly, to the general admiration of the nearby townsfolk, as well as her own housemates. Leo is a well-educated and well-read Marxist, who delights in quoting passages from the great philosphers through the ages. This came in handy when Tarragon Sage Valerian--so named by Miss Thale, who claimed that privilege after finding the baby on her doorstep--made her appearance. Tarragon is much loved by all, regardless of her birth, and has been very well-educated in her home school, organized by Leo.
But the house--Thale's Folly--well, the money left by Miss Thale dwindled, and the electricity was turned off. Followed, of course, shortly thereafter by the water. Fortunately, there is a creek and a pond on the twenty-five acres around the house, and some of those acres are put to good use as vegetable and herb gardens. The little band survives, in spite of themselves.
This is the situation when Andrew arrives; he's totally confounded by everything. Doing all the wrong things first, however, he is their inadvertent saviour. When his room is ransacked, he stumbles over the missing will while searching for something to read. He then discovers his long-lost Mother living most happily in a cabin on the other side of the pond.
All too soon, the gypsies have arrived, and Andrew has miraculously found his next book in a trunk in Miss L'Hommedieu's room. All the loose ends are neatly tied up in the last ten pages. Therein lies my major complaint. It's TOO rushed! There are just too many loose ends still dangling when one turns the final page. More! I want more! Please!
Actually, this book had such a gentle, naïve feel to it, one could almost think it was an early book by Ms.Gilman, perhaps even pre-dating the illustrious Mrs. Pollifax, or the Clairvoyant Countess. It had such a very 50s feel to it, the sudden mention of a cell phone or computer was quite jarring. Plus all those wonderful beginnings by Miss L'Hommedieu were crying for middles and endings. Even with these niggles, though, it was still a most enjoyable book. With an added bonus--an alert to the newest Mrs. Pollifax adventure. Hooray!

The Born Queen (The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone, Book 4), by Greg Keyes

In The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone, Greg Keyes has crafted a brilliant saga of magic, adventure, and love set against a backdrop of clashing empires and an ancient, reawakened evil. Now, with The Born Queen, Keyes brings his epic to a masterly close, gathering the strands of plot and character into a stunning climax that both completes and transcends all that has gone before.

The Briar King is dead, and the world itself follows him to ruin. Aspar White, wounded and tired, must embark on one last quest to save the forest and the people he loves, but he has little hope of success.

Anne Dare at last sits on the throne of Crotheny, but for how long? The Church, now led by the corrupt and powerful Marché Hespero, has declared a holy war against her, giving the king of Hansa the pretext he needs to unleash his vast might on the young queen and her unready army.

But Hansa is the least of Anne’s worries. The Hellrune, war seer of Hansa, strikes at her through vision and prophecy. The Kept–last of the elder Skasloi lords–weaves his own dark webs. Anne’s teacher and ally in the sedos world might also be her worst enemy, and Anne’s own mounting strength compels her toward madness.

Surviving these dangers and mastering her eldritch abilities are merely prelude to the real struggle. There are many–some with power matching or even exceeding Anne’s own–who are willing to kill in order to seize control. For whoever sits upon the throne will have the ultimate command to bring about the world’s salvation–or its apocalypse.

Chapter One

The Queen of Demons

Anne sighed with pleasure as ghosts brushed her bare flesh. She kept her eyes closed as they murmured softly about her, savoring their faintly chilly caresses. She inhaled the ripe perfumes of decay and for the first time in a very long time felt a deep contentment.

Anne, one of the phantoms simpered. Anne, there is no time.

A bit irritated, she opened her eyes to see three women standing before her.

No, she realized. They weren’t standing at all. Feeling a weird tingle that she knew ought to be more, she turned her gaze around her to see what else there was.

She was elsewhere, of course, couched on deep, spongy moss grown on a hammock in a blackwater fen that went beyond sight in every direction. The branches of the trees above her were tatted together like the finest Safnian lace, allowing only the wispiest of diffuse light through to glisten on the dew-jeweled webs of spiders larger than her hand.

The women swayed faintly, the boughs above them creaking a bit from their weight.

One wore a black gown and a black mask, and her locks were flowing silver. The next wore forest green and a golden mask, and her red braids swayed almost to her feet. The third wore a mask of bone and a dress the color of dried blood. Her hair was brown.

Their undisguised lips and flesh were bluish-black above the coils of rope that had cinched about their necks and wrung out their lives.

The Faiths, those obtuse creatures, were dead. Should she be sad? Part of her thought so.

Anne.

She started. Was one of them still alive? But then she felt the ghosts again, tickling against her. Now she knew who the ghosts were.

Should she be frightened? Part of her thought so.

“You’re dead,” she observed.

“Yes,” the faint voice replied. “We fought to linger here, but too much of us is gone. We had something to tell you.”

“Something useful? That would be the first time.”

“Pity us, Anne. We did what we could. Find our sister.”

“That’s right, there are four of you,” Anne remembered. Was she asleep? She seemed to be having trouble recalling things.

“Yes, four. Find—ah, no. He’s coming. Anne—”

But then a cold wind started in the depths of the quag, and the canopy was alive with strange dark birds, and Anne was suddenly alone with corpses.

But only for a moment. Then she felt him, as she had another time when in this place. All of her blood seemed to gather on one side of her body, and all of the branches of the forest yearned toward his invisible presence.

“Well, there you are, little queen,” the voice said. “It’s been too long.”

“Stay back,” she said. “You remember last time.”

“Last time, I was weaker and you had help,” the voice replied. “This is not last time.”

“What do you want?”

“Your company, sweet queen. Your hand in marriage.”

“Who are you?”

“Your king.”

“I have no king,” Anne bristled. “I am queen, regent in my own right.”

“Look deeper in your heart,” the voice purred.

“Who are you?”

“You want my name? What do names matter when one is as we are?”

“There is no ‘we,’ ” Anne protested. But her belly tingled, as it had when Roderick had kissed her there.

The presence moved closer, and though she could not see him, she felt as if the shadow wore a wicked smile.

“Why did you kill the Faiths?”

A deep chuckle rustled through the branches, and the water stirred into circles all about.

Then a ruddy light fell on the broken surface of the fen, and Anne felt heat behind her. With a shriek, she turned to confront him.

But it was no male thing that stood behind her; there was no mistaking that. The body that shone like a white flame was willowy but certainly female, dressed only in locks that billowed and curled like strands of liquid, living fire. Her face was so terrible in its beauty that Anne felt as if icicles had been driven through her eyes and deep into her brain. She screamed so loudly, she felt her throat was tearing.

“Hush,” the woman said, and Anne felt her larynx instantly close. Then the horrible gaze went through and beyond her.

“Leave,” she commanded.

“You only delay the inevitable,” the male voice muttered.

“Leave,” the woman repeated.

Anne felt the weight of him lessen.

“I didn’t kill your friends,” he said, and was gone.

Anne felt the woman’s gaze on her but could not look up.

“Who are you?” she whispered.

“The Kept gave you my true name,” the woman replied. “He gave you some of my old epithets—Queen of Demons, and so on.”

“Yes. But I don’t . . .” She trailed off in confusion.

“You wonder rather what I am. What I want. Why I’ve helped you.”

“I guess so,” Anne said weakly, feeling suddenly presumptuous.

“Am I demon or saint?” the woman sighed, so close that Anne could feel her breath.

“Yes,” Anne barely managed.

“If there were a difference, perhaps I could tell you,” she replied.

“And the man . . .”

“He’s quite right, you know,” the woman went on. “He didn’t kill the Faiths. I did. For you.”

“What do you mean?”

“You led me to them. You rejected them, withdrew your protection, and I ended their existence. All but the one, and I shall find her.”

“But why?”

“You don’t need them,” she said. “You never did. They were poor councillors. And now you have me.”

“I don’t want you,” Anne protested.

“Then say my name. Tell me to leave.”

Anne swallowed.

“You won’t,” the woman said. “You need my help. You need all the help you can get, because he will come for you and will either make you his or destroy you. Which means you must destroy him. And that you cannot currently do. Your friends will fall first, then you.”

“And if I believe you, how can I stop that?”

“Strengthen yourself every way you can. Let me teach you the ways of your power. When he comes, you will be ready, if you trust me.”

“Trust you,” Anne murmured, finally lifting her gaze to the woman’s face.

This time it wasn’t so terrifying. There was something in the set of the woman’s eyes that seemed truthful.

“Give me a reason to trust you,” Anne said.

A smile slit the woman’s face. “You have another enemy, one you haven’t noticed yet, one that even I have difficulty seeing, for he—or perhaps she—sits deep in the shadows of the Reiksbaurg Palace. Like you, he is able to look across leagues and through time. Haven’t you wondered why you manage to surprise the forces of the Church but Hansa is always one step ahead of you?”

“Yes,” Anne replied. “I assumed spies and traitors were involved. How can you be certain it’s shinecraft?”

“Because there is a place I can never see, and that is the sign of a Hellrune,” the woman replied.

“A Hellrune?”

“A Hellrune sees through the eyes of the dead, who do not know past from present. Because the law of death has been broken, that is an even more powerful gift than it once was. But you get your visions directly through the sedos power. You can be stronger: See the consequences of his visions and act against them. In time, you will even be able to command the dead to give him false visions. But before you achieve that mastery, he can do much harm. If you act as I say, you may stop him sooner.”

“How is that?”

“Send an embassy to Hansa, to the court of Marcomir. Send your mother, Neil MeqVren, Alis Berrye—”

“I’ll do no such thing,” Anne snapped. “I just got my mother back; I won’t send her into danger.”

“Do you think she isn’t in danger in Eslen? Try to dream about that. I promise you that you will not like what visions come.”

A sick dismay was starting to grip Anne, but she tried to stay strong. “You’re less use than the Faiths,” she said.

“No, I’m not. Your mother is going to ask to go, anyway; she thinks there is a chance for peace. You’ll know by that that I’m telling you something useful. But further, I’ll tell you this: If you send your mother, the knight, and the assassin to Kaithbaurg, I foresee an excellent chance for them to end the threat of the Hellrune and thus weaken Hansa. If you do not send them, I see you weeping over your mother’s body in Eslen-of-the-Dead.”

“An ‘excellent chance’? Why can’t you see whether they kill him or not?”

“Two reasons. The first is that since you haven’t decided to send them, the future is cloudy. But the deeper reason is that as I told you, I am not able to see the Hellrune. But I know the opportunity can arise. Try seeing it yourself.”

“I can’t direct my visions,” Anne said. “They just come.”

“You can direct them,” the woman insisted. “Remember how once you had to be summoned here? Now you come and go as you please. It’s the same. Everything you need is here, especially now that the Faiths aren’t mucking around.”

“Where is here?” Anne asked. “I’ve never understood that.”

“Why, inside the sedos,” she replied. “This is where the world is moved from, where the power flows from. It is given form only by those who live here. It is your kingdom now, and you can shape it as you want. Hansa, the future, the past—all are here. Grasp the reins of power. You need not take my word for anything I’ve just said. Discover it for yourself.”

And like a fire blown out by a wind, she flickered and was gone.

Anne stood there for a moment, looking at the dead faces of the Faiths.

Was it possible? Could she really free herself from the whims of the forces around her? Could she actually steer them herself, be free of doubt, finally chart her own destiny without the meddling of untrustworthy wights?

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?” she asked the Faiths.

But their whispering was over.

“Well,” she murmured. “Let’s see if she’s telling the truth.”

And she saw, and woke with tears streaming on her face, and knew some things had to be done.

She rose to do them.

Somewhat disappointing end to what was a good series
By Tarun R. Elankath
In this finale to the kingdoms of thorn and bone, I was dismayed at the strange story progression, nonsensical plot-turns and personality-refits of some of the main characters.

Actually, it looked like Greg Keyes couldn't figure out *what* to do with Anne & Stephen and their story lines follow weird arcs. An author shouldn't simply invert the basic personalities of his main characters and say its because of "magic" and "power".

The only thing still lovable about this book was Cazio - and who cares if he is cliched?

But though this book doesn't really match up to its predecessors, it does concludes the series (albeit in a hurry towards the end) and there are bits and pieces of action that are enjoyable.

All in all - an average fantasy story. The first two books of the kingdoms of thorn and bone were good enough to leave you breathless. The last two just leave you listless.

A so-so end to a fantastic series.

I really wanted to like "The Born Queen," as I enjoyed the previous entries in this four book series immensely. I felt that the first two books were the strongest, with "The Blood Knight" starting to go in a direction that was...disturbing. The fabulously rich world and great mystery created in the first books seemed to give way to more convoluted plots and magical deus ex machina, but I still had to read Born Queen. With whole chunks taken up by overly complicated magical dilemmas and unclear descriptive sequences, it seems Keyes rushed his usual detailed but clear writing style so that "Born Queen" could hit the stores ASAP.

Don't get me wrong, I still think Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone is a great series, worthy of mention alongside Erikson, Bakkar, Cook and of course GRRM when talking about great "dark epic fantasy." I am in no way saying don't read Born Queen, especially if you have read the other three books. There's certainly something to be said about closure. I just wish that it had been done in a more satisfying manner.

The series overall is a 4.5/5 to me, with "Born Queen" being the only real blemish. But I'd still recommend the series in a heartbeat to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy.

What the?
By Avidreader
First off let me say that I read the books one after the other. That made all the more evident the disjointed plot line and nonsensical twists.

And dues ex machina in droves. I don't think I've ever read a story that has so much 'get the character in trouble in every chapter' and then rescue him. Almost everyone in every chapter was rescued in the nick of time. Add to that the characters were for the most part, completely out of character. There is a difference between character development and personality changes on this scale.

Usually I enjoy books that make the conclusion hard to guess, but not this one. Events happened that made no sense and seemed to have no bearing on the story. The pacing was also too fast. It made one character blend into another because all they ever did was visit magic places, fight or flee.

The writing itself was good and the story had potential. (the world did as well despite essentially being a copy of the medieval Christian church, Scotland, England, Norway and Italy with only enough change in actual languages to make me wonder why Keyes thought a pretense language necessary. I mean wairwulf instead of werewolf? What's the point?

Add to all this the plotting and pace were terrible, wild and all over the place. You had so much to work with Greg, but I'm sorry, you blew it.
