Growing Up X: A Memoir by the Daughter of Malcolm X, by Ilyasah Shabazz

“Ilyasah Shabazz has written a compelling and lyrical coming-of-age story as well as a candid and heart-warming tribute to her parents. Growing Up X is destined to become a classic.”
–SPIKE LEE

February 21, 1965: Malcolm X is assassinated in Harlem’s Audubon Ballroom. June 23, 1997: After surviving for a remarkable twenty-two days, his widow, Betty Shabazz, dies of burns suffered in a fire. In the years between, their six daughters reach adulthood, forged by the memory of their parents’ love, the meaning of their cause, and the power of their faith. Now, at long last, one of them has recorded that tumultuous journey in an unforgettable memoir: Growing Up X.

Born in 1962, Ilyasah was the middle child, a rambunctious livewire who fought for–and won–attention in an all-female household. She carried on the legacy of a renowned father and indomitable mother while navigating childhood and, along the way, learning to do the hustle. She was a different color from other kids at camp and yet, years later as a young woman, was not radical enough for her college classmates. Her story is, sbove all else, a tribute to a mother of almost unimaginable forbearance, a woman who, “from that day at the Audubon when she heard the shots and threw her body on [ours, never] stopped shielding her children.”

From Publishers Weekly
One of Malcolm X's six daughters, Shabazz was two when he was assassinated in February 1965. The bulk of the book covers the day-to-day specifics of Shabazz's childhood and adolescence as a middle-class African-American Muslim girl, punctuated by small brushes with her parents' past. Malcolm X is justifiably sentimentalized via the fragmentary memories and second-hand stories of Shabazz's childhood perspective (including a visit to the soon-to-be Muhammad Ali's training camp). Shabazz's mother, Dr. Betty Shabazz, eventually a professor of health administration at Medgar Evers College, is a constant presence in the book; "Mommy" shepherds Ilyasah and the other girls through school, and herself through graduate work, with "amazing strength and perseverance." Ilyasah's often ordinary existence is rendered in unadorned prose (to the point of listing teachers she had in various schools or chronicling a standoff with neighborhood girls), and her insights into herself and those around her can be cursory (a rape is covered in two pages) if honestly rendered. Shabazz is working on a book about her parents, which may explain why it sometimes feels like anecdotes and information are being held back. By the time Ilyasah comes to a more nuanced understanding of her identity as the daughter of Malcolm X, Betty Shabazz is killed by a fire set by one of Ilyasah's nephews in 1997. The book ends there, with exhortations that "Life is not a destination; it is a journey."

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Shabazz was two years old when her father was murdered in the presence of his young family, and she describes how her mother heroically raised her and her sisters in his absence. Betty Shabazz got help from friends and wealthy celebrities to buy a big, beautiful home in Mt. Vernon, NY, after the Nation of Islam evicted them from the small house it had provided during Malcolm X's ministry. The girls led comfortable, sheltered, upper-middle-class lives, complete with housekeepers, chauffeured cars, exclusive social clubs, and expensive, predominantly white private schools and summer camps. In her well-meaning attempts to protect her daughters from emotional trauma, their mother didn't teach them anything about their father's work and philosophy. Shabazz was in college when she read The Autobiography of Malcolm X for the first time. The author obviously idolizes her mother, who was always studying and working hard to provide for her daughters in style, but also indicates that she was controlling-even to the point of selecting Shabazz's college and dismissing her daughter's expressed desire to attend a black university. Teens who have been inspired by the life and speeches of Malcolm X will undoubtedly find this memoir interesting.

From Library Journal
The third of the six daughters of assassinated Black Muslim leader Malcolm X (or Hajj Malik El-Shabazz) and Dr. Betty Dean Sanders, Shabazz reminisces about her childhood and life in the 32 years between her father's being gunned down while speaking at Harlem's Audubon Ballroom in 1965 and her mother's dying of injuries suffered in a house fire in 1997. Two years old when her father died, Ilyasah has only a few remembered moments with him, but she offers much more to correct what she views as the usually fragmented and false understanding of him and his contribution to America and the world. While promoting her father's legacy as a messenger of black self-assurance, self-respect, and self-defense, Ilyasah also argues that great men marry great women, for her true hero is her mother. "Mommy" dominates the narrative, and her often hard-learned lessons carry the character and course of the journey toward the self-identity shared here. This interesting memoir, the first by any of the children of Malcolm X, is valuable for rounding out our understanding of the man and his milieu. A COURAGEOUS DEBUT
By Mocha Girl
I commend Ilyasah Shabazz for her courage to publish her memoirs in Growing Up X. It is clearly an act of bravery for anyone to share intimate thoughts with the world. I found it surprising that she led a rather normal, non-eventful life in Mt Vernon, New York because I, like many others, perceived her (and her sisters) as the legacy of two remarkable parents-thus making her destined to supercede their combined greatness. Naturally, this is an unfair and often cruel expectation to place on children of infamous parents and Ilyasah shared how her mother worked hard to shield and protect them from the burden of proof. She also enlightens the reader by saying she often would not to tell people of her parentage when she first met them for just those reasons.
The memoir, which is largely a tribute to her mother, chronicles Ilyasah's life from her father's death to her mother's death. She begins by mentioning the Little Family (her father's family) kept their distance in early years and how her immediate family was largely sustained by members of the local mosque, close friends, her mother's relatives, and high profile celebrities who showed her mother kindness and support in a time of need. Despite the generosities of others, it was her mother's resolve and personal sacrifices that kept the family together. She rehashes childhood memories of private school, summer camp, sisterhood bonding, and coming of age into adulthood. She speaks of her first kiss, her juvenile experiences with prejudice/racism, her loss of virginity from rape, the many career changes, and the loves of her life--one of which was an NBA player that she thought she might marry. These memories are simplistically and rather briefly written in a matter-of-factly type manner-almost like it's a series of flashbacks. The only exception is the heart-wrenching section where Ilyasah tells of her mother's battle for life after the fire set by Ilyasah's nephew, Malcolm, Quibillah's son. I felt her pain through the pages of the novel and my heart goes out to her family.
With the exception of a few events, I found Ilyasah's life to be quite ordinary and found myself wanting to learn more about the "holes" in the novel. For example, she mentions that she never had visited her father's gravesite until she was an adult in college. In fact, she did not know the gravesite's location upon arriving at the cemetery and just wandered around until she found it. I suppose I wanted to know why they never visited his grave as a family unit, even for Father's Day (considering all attempts made by her mother for a 'normal' mainstreamed life). The only explanation offered was that it would be too painful for her mother.
I found it equally extraordinary that her mother hires a home tutor to supplement their private school education ensuring they are properly and completely taught African history, Arabic, etc. but then Ilyasah admits to having to learn of her father's political ideologies, beliefs, and struggles by taking a humanities class on Malcolm X in college. It is only then that she comes to truly appreciate and comprehend his influence and effect on society. Surely since her father has his honorable place in American history, it almost seemed almost like an injustice to neglect this part of her heritage for so long. Despite what this reader thinks, I am sure Mrs. Shabazz, or "Mommy" as she is referred to throughout the book, had her reasons. I am not second-guessing her [Mrs. Shabazz] judgment, just asking for clarification that is not readily apparent in the book. Ilyasah tries to explain by stating that her mother taught them that he [Malcolm] was "Daddy" at home, nothing more and nothing less, which is totally justified.
I, too, was disappointed that the book concludes at Mrs. Shabazz's death because I ended up have more questions than when I started about Ilyasah and her family. I wanted to learn more about the Little family, Quibillah's FBI encounter (conspiracy to assassinate Louis Farrakhan), her sister's lives, and Malcom (the grandson). From my understanding Ilyasah is working on a second novel about her parents, perhaps my questions will be answered in the upcoming body of work. ...

Intimate, Up Close and Personal...Must Read!
By Pamela Jarmon-Wade
In 235 pages, Ms. Shabazz takes the reader on a compelling and intimate journey that has not been revealed prior to this book. She shares her personal coming of age story. Some of the details released were extremely sensitive, yet I imagine a "healing" came from revealing them.
She humbly discusses the priviledged life that she and her sisters had. This consisted of attending predominately white private schools, socializing with Hollywood stars, dating professional athletes, membership in Links, Jack and Jill of America, various housekeepers etc. Her life has been the total opposite of what I would have imagined it to be.
In reference to her father (Malcolm X) she does not repeat his autobiography. Instead, she uses this area wisely to clear up some myths and misconceptions about him and his parents (The Littles). For example, Rev. Earl Little was a Baptist minister who helped organize the Marcus Garvey United Negro Improvement Association. Louise Norton Little spoke five languages, taught her children to sing the alphabet in French and was the recording secretary for the association that her husband helped organize. This information helped prove that Malcolm X was insightful, disciplined and educated by his parents and NOT Elijah Muhammad and The Nation. She says that Mr. Muhammad helped Malcolm X grow by clearing away some the negative seeds of discouragement planted by white school teachers in his youth which led to his petty crimes etc. She shares other insightful information that gives the reader more insight into the articulate and charming Malcolm from his youth. I was shocked to learn how old Ilyasah Shabazz was when she first visited her father's grave. Find out about Malcolm X's siblings that were a part of the Nation too.
In reference to her mother (Dr. Betty Shabazz) this story shows how much she admired her mother. It is a moving tribute to both parents. Any struggling female single parent that reads this, can't help but gain inspiration and motivation to better themselves. Dr. Betty Shabazz's life shows determintaion to advance in education, rear well rounded children and be the keeper of her husband's legacy.
I attended her Houston Book Signing. She was very humble. It was obvious that this book was a must for several reasons. She needed to shatter the myths and notions of what people assume a daughter of Malcolm X to be. As she read warmly from page 95...I glanced around the room and saw many smiling faces. She touched on a radio caller from earlier in the morning who all but demanded that she lend her name to support a racial situation that was brewing in a section of Houston. She firmly reiterated that she needs to fulfill her purpose in this life...not her father's. She promised that the book would clear up all the media myths surrounding her nephew that set the fire, which eventually claimed the life of Dr. Betty Shabazz. The book fell short of answering my questions about her nephew, but I can understand why she probably opted to approach that topic in her selected manner. At any rate, this book is a must read. Do some high school grads a favor and give them this book, along with The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Not only will they get a valuable history lesson, but they will walk away with the deep message that education is important...the key to financial security, independence etc...and unlike fame, favor, wealth...once acquired, it can't be taken away. Find out what Ms. Shabazz feels was her father's greatest gift to African Americans. Discover Malcolm X as a loving father who read poetry to his girls and a husband. See 16 pages of never seen before black and white photos from her personal collection. Take a peek into what is was actually like to grow up "X".

A good read
By Amelia Blyden
GROWING UP X
In reading the entertaining, exciting and painful narrative of Ilyasah Shabazz's coming of age, I could not help but admire the author's gift of insight into the extraordinary lives of Betty Shabazz and her precocious girls who grew up privileged, yet beneath the shadow of sorrow and a painful history. The author, speaking of incidents that occurred when she was two years old, admits: "I write all this as though I remember, which I do not"...(about) "that terrible, terrible day, I have learned from the Autobiography, from other written sources and from the painful recollections of friends." - Yet she weaves the eye witness accounts of persons such as Percy Sutton, Ossie Davis and famous others to bring her story to life, a story that becomes hers as she describes her growing up. She writes with candor and without apology. Each episode of joy, pain or sorrow is essential to her maturity: family life in a comfortable environment; being black in a white boarding school; college life; experiencing rape, a failed business venture, heartache, and a long hospital stay after an automobile accident.
For readers not well cognizant of the lives of Betty Shabazz and Malcom X, the authors dynamic parents, or those readers whose only acquaintance stems from the media, the book reveals new depths, educates and makes the reader more discerning.
The author's depiction of the love between her mother and herself, written with clarity, poignancy, and sadness - a compelling tribute to her mother - attest to a statement once made by Betty Shabazz, speaking of her pride in Ilyasah before The National Political Congress of Black Women: "On her own Ilyasah has learned about life and death." Ironically, a statement made in part, in reference to the death of Malcom X. I believe readers of this book will absorb more information about the personal life of Malcom X and his family than from any documentary, movie or biographical article. Long after I put the book down, this story remained with me.

Amazon.com Review
Chances are, your baby shower showered you with copies of Goodnight Moon, and you, if not your little one, are ready to move on. Kathleen Odean--former children's librarian, chair of the 2002 Newbery Award committee, and author of Great Books for Girls and other excellent children's literature guides--has compiled 500 book recommendations for babies and toddlers. The time to begin sharing books with children is during babyhood. As the introduction states, "Reading to young children sets them on the path of emergent literacy, a term that sums up all the ways children become at home with language, reading, and writing well before they can decipher or print a recognizable word." In addition to book recommendations, Odean offers plenty of insight into early child development, tips on reading aloud, and careful listings of additional print and online resources for information about children's literature.

Odean's friendly, accessible guide recommends books in two primary categories: "Nursery Rhymes, Fingerplays, and Songs" and "Picture-Story Books for the Very Young." Each thoughtful, decidedly "un-canned" review demonstrates how a book can be used with a child and describes its distinctive characteristics--the basic content, the look and feel of the illustrations, and the sound of the language. Information such as author, illustrator, publisher, age range, and which editions are currently in print is also provided. You'll find wonderful new castings of tried-and-true Mother Goose rhymes and favorite classics along with picture-book discoveries from Jules Feiffer's Bark, George to Peggy Rathmann's board-book edition of 10 Minutes Till Bedtime . Odean is not only knowledgeable, she has great taste, to boot. This could be the most valuable baby-shower gift you ever give, but if you have any interest in children's literature at all you'll want to keep a copy for yourself.--Karin Snelson

From School Library Journal
This valuable resource includes a wealth of information for parents and librarians about the importance of reading aloud to babies and toddlers, as well as an annotated listing of books, mostly published since 1990. In the informative introduction, Odean discusses when, where, and how to read aloud effectively, choosing the best books, and the importance of visiting the public library. Nursery rhymes, fingerplays, and songs make up the first section, which is followed by picture books for the target audience. The author includes resources and tips for adults with lists of good baby-gift titles, favorite bedtime books, books for older siblings of a new baby, old favorites, books that inspire movement and verbal participation, favorite flap books, and books with multiethnic groups of children. Finally, Odean includes Web sites concerned with young children, sources to help parents keep abreast of literature for them, and further reading. Author, illustrator, and title indexes make for easy access. Libraries will want to have this fabulous guide on hand as well as Jane Marino's Babies in the Library! (Scarecrow, 2003), which encourages libraries to hold programs for infants and toddlers and presents good public library programming ideas. A must for all public libraries.

From Booklist
Odean's Great Books about Things Kids Love (2001) recommended titles for children ages 3 to 14. Now in the same chatty, enthusiastic style she focuses on helping parents find the best books for the youngest audience. Without a word of jargon, she combines facts about child development with long annotations for more than 500 books, all of them in print, to read aloud and share with kids from birth to 3. Yes, research shows that reading to babies helps them learn to read when they're older, but Odean's focus is always on pleasure, on how the joy of sharing pictures, rhythm, and rhyme brings adult and child together. One short chapter includes books of nursery rhymes, fingerplays, and songs, but most of the annotations are of picture storybooks for the very young. A long section speaks directly to parents with practical tips on where, when, and how to read aloud, and includes lists of further resources and Odean's special favorites. A must for the parenting shelf and for anyone who works with the lap-sit crowd. Hazel Rochman

Good resource, but I wish...
By MCRS
In looking for things to read to our daughter once she was born, my husband and I searched our memories for childhood favorites, talked to friends and librarians and poked through Jim Trelease's Read Aloud Handbook but found it to be a little light on suggestions appropriate for an infant. Kathleen Odean has done a wonderful job of describing several hundred books appropriate to read to 0-3 year olds and suggesting age ranges for each book.

I do wish that in addition to her "Favorite Picks" which give quick lists such as "Favorite Bedtime Books" that she had also included a list of books that rhyme and an index of titles by age since paging through to find things for a particular age is time consuming. All in all we are very pleased with this book and look forward to being introduced to many new books and authors as our child grows older.

Helped this new father...
By Jeffrey P. Ralston
I used this book to build a 100+ library of books for my 17-month old daughter. There are so many children's books available that a guide like this is indispensible for distinguishing between them. This guide pointed me towards some fantastic books and authors that I would not have encountered by simply browsing my local library or bookstore. Some examples of fantastic authors that my daughter and I love whose books were recommended by this guide include Frank Asch, Pat Hutchins, Eve Rice, and Patricia Hubbell.

Wow, what a resource!

If you have ever wondered whether all books for babies and toddlers are created equal, then wonder no more. Amazon.com Review
The subtitle to The African American Writers Handbook: How to Get in Print and Stay in Print is misleading. Yes, there are chapters on writing queries and synopses, finding agents, dealing with editors, and promoting one's work. But plenty of books cover the same ground with greater depth and clarity. It is when author Robert Fleming turns his attention to the experience of the African American in the "almost lily-white" world of publishing that his book comes into its own. Should an African American author choose an agent based on racial solidarity? How does having a white (or black) editor affect the quality of the author's work? What kinds of inroads are black writers making in genre writing?

There is a kitchen-sink feeling to The African American Writers Handbook, which is published by Ballantine's multicultural One World imprint. A chapter on self-publishing is followed by one on tax tips; a list of authors and their day jobs comes directly after a section on award-winning black-authored books. Fleming's accounts of African American publishing history and his profiles of African American writers somehow lack the drama of their compelling subjects. Still, despite its lack of coherence and its workmanlike prose, this handbook is full of information that African American (and, for that matter, non-African American) writers will want to know. There are profiles of authors, lists of classic works, interviews with small-press African American publishers, discussions about African American distributors and bookstores, and a generous smattering of anecdotes about black authors. Despite the inherent difficulties, "there has never been a better time for African American writers in the history of American publishing," says Fleming. Maybe so. But it is tough indeed to ignore the words of novelist John Oliver Killens (Youngblood), quoted here: "Writing was the damnedest, hardest, and loneliest buck a man could make, especially if that man was black." --Jane Steinberg

From Publishers Weekly
With publishing house conglomeration, bestsellers and the bottom line occupying agents, editors and others who used to have more time to shepherd writers through the publication process, handbooks increasingly fill the gaps. In one of the first targeted specifically to the burgeoning numbers of African-American writers, Fleming provides not only basic information but also the historical context surrounding the publication of books by black authors, profiles and interviews with writers and industry veterans, and genre specifications. During the 1990s, African-American publishing shifted from an emphasis on literary fiction and nonfiction to commercial fiction (e.g., Terry McMillan's Waiting to Exhale) and inspirational nonfiction (e.g., Iyanla Vanzant's spiritual self-improvement books). Journalist, critic and author Fleming (Wisdom of the Elders) succeeds in his goal of arming new writers with tips about effective query letters and proposals, dealing with agents and editors (including working with black and white professionals), self-publishing and electronic rights. Ranging capably over a wide field, he gives advice about self-promotion that will educate even a seasoned author, although he doesn't clearly discuss how to work with a public relations consultant, nor does he mention independent editors as an option for writers in need of extra attention. Surprisingly, he refers to the Internet mainly as a research tool, giving less attention to its potential as a vehicle for publicity or electronic publication. Despite these quibbles, the rich context and down-to-earth advice he brings to the publication of books by black authors is well worth the price of this comprehensive guide. Agent, Victoria Sanders. YA-In this cross between an almanac and guidebook, Fleming assists aspiring writers with an eclectic assembly of subjects related to the writing life. He discusses the basics of manuscript submissions, tools of writing, and the publishing world. He speaks of issues that many African-American writers must deal with in producing and marketing their books. He also reveals the importance of self-promotion. In subsequent chapters, Fleming entertains book lovers of any race with a tour of the African-American literary world. He pays homage to outstanding writers, offers a brisk overview of genres, gives a nod to reading groups, and mentions the Internet.

A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY WRITER
By A Customer
The wealth of information contained in the African American Writers Handbook is indespensible, not only as a tool, but as a resource of tidbits and anecdotes never found in books of this sort. Handbooks are not generally meant to be entertaining, but merely informative and instructional. This book masters all. I truly ENJOYED reading it and discovering the fascinating stories behind the lives of many legendary black writers. Do not be fooled by the name. This handbook is for any writer with a desire to enhance their craft and gain insight into the lives of writers who have brightened the literary world. Mr. Fleming did a marvelous job. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about writing or simply wants a great read! A definite keeper.

INVALUABLE TOOL
By Bonita L. Davis
Aspiring African-American writers will find this book an invaluable resource in breaking into the world of publishing. Written with a no nonsense approach, Robert Fleming gives the reader fundamental information concerning the publishing business that every writer should know. He insists that you do your research and homework about the publishing field and your market before an article or perspective novel is sent out. You must know the rules of the game before you can play.
Yes, the book is for serious writers who want to get published. Follow his guidelines and you will make it happen. Included in the text are profiles regarding African-American writers in the past who made a comfortable living in their field. You receive from them their thoughts regarding the industry and just being a writer. Fleming also tells you what fields and genres Blacks have written in which they have been promoted by the mainstream publishing houses. All fictional genres and poetry are open wide for Black talent.
This book is highly informative, entertaining and realistic in presenting to the reader the obstacles that they must overcome in order to become published. Its mood is very optimistic and there isn't any doubt that you can get in print if you do your homework, work hard, have a hard skin and keep on perservering. The only fault that I find with the book is its failure to deal with non-fiction opportunities and the absence of Black writers in the horror and action fiction genres. Other than those absent fields I would say this book is great. It is a must to have as a resource in your library.

A MUST-HAVE for any aspiring AFRICAN AMERICAN writer!
By ChickLitGurrl
This book is a definite must for any aspiring African American writer! For the reader, it's as if you're a fly on the wall taking part of some top-secret information. The handbook is chock full of information regarding:
1. Tips on submitting proposals, query letters, and preparing manuscripts for submission; 2. Advice on finding an agent and negotiating contracts that launch careers; 3. Interviews with top editors, agents, publishing executives, and bookstore owners; 4. Updated information on copyrights, subsidiary rights, and sales and marketing; 5. The trials and tribulations of self-publishing; and 6. The art of promoting your work and yourself to a wider audience
Not only does this book provide a comprehensive guide to the OTHER side of writing (the okay, now I got a book, what do I need to know now?), but it provides inspiration as well to the number of aspiring writers out there who might feel they will never understand anything beyond the writing-a-book stage... now you have a great beginning lesson to read on the entire publishing process.
If you're a true writer, and want to know about all the facets of the publishing world, this is a book you NEED to have on your shelf.

Slow Burn sizzles.
By Judy
Slow Burn by Julie Garwood is a compelling story of mystery and romance.

Kate MacKenna has had a near miss on her life when a bomb goes off at a charity event she is attending. She is drawn out of town when her friend Jordan has a medical crisis. While there she falls into the arms of Dylan Buchanan, Jordan's brother. This is a complication she thinks she doesn't need.

After another near miss with another explosion Dylan comes to town to get to the bottom of who wants to harm Kate.

Dylan a detective is on leave after being injured on the job. He tells himself that he is looking after Kate at his sisters request but he comes to realize its always been Kate for him.

Getting to the bottom of these accidents is further complicated when it comes to light that Kate has inherited a boatload of money.

Dylan and Kate's romance is loaded with wit, charm and oozing sex appeal. The I Love You scene still makes me smile. The intrigue in this story is intense and heart pounding.

Julie Garwood has written another exceptional story. Can't wait for the next tale.

Oozes chemistry and surprises galore
By Tracy Vest
Entrepreneur Kate McKenna has survived not one but two bombings, as well as a near fatal hit and run. She and her two sisters have just discovered that their mother, who died a year earlier, mortgaged Kate's business and soon they will lose their home, as well as Kate's livelihood if they cannot come up with a balloon payment. She travels to Boston to see her best friend and former college roommate, Jordan, who is undergoing surgery. While in Boston, Kate has a one night stand with Jordan's sexy brother, Dylan.

When Kate reveals to Jordan all the bad luck that has come her way, Jordan becomes concerned and asks that Dylan to travel to South Carolina to look after Kate. Dylan is still is upset with Kate for taking off without saying goodbye, but goes down there anyhow. While the two decide to keep it platonic, she is summoned to a Savannah, Georgia law office for the reading of her uncle's will. When it's discovered that Kate will inherit the bulk of the estate, there are a whole lot more suspects to sift through.

Garwood mixes humor with suspense and romance to come up with a knockout mystery about a woman who suddenly finds herself the victim of a mad bomber. Dylan and Kate ooze chemistry and Garwood gives them some great bantering dialogue. Dylan's way of telling her he loves her is priceless. I often guess who the baddie is, but this one had me baffled right up to the revelation.

Dylan Buchanan Finally Gets His Story!!!
By Kristi Ahlers
Julie Garwood is an automatic buy for me and has been for years. When she first started penning romantic suspense I was afraid that her beautiful voice so apparent in her historical romances would be lost. Well, her voice has changed probably due to her change in genre but she still has managed to create vivid characters that are not only likeable but also entertaining.

Someone wants Kate MacKenna dead. So far they've tried to blow her up twice in two different but nasty explosions, and they've tried to run her down. The big question is why? She's not rich, (she has recently just found out that she and her sisters are in danger of loosing their house due to a bank loan their mother took out to cover her hospital expenses) not beautiful in her mind, and she lives a real simple life. Oh, she has friends and she has a burning crush on her best friends brother Dylan. This is a big problem as she can't love Dylan and the fact that this handsome police detective is willing to put his life on the line for her only complicates things. Specially as she does need a knight in shining armor to keep her safe.

Dylan has a thing for "Pickle" and his feelings for her are growing by leaps and bounds. When his sister Jordan asks him to fly down to keep her safe he does but he has no idea that Kate really is in trouble and that the person who wants her dead won't stop until she is. Will Dylan be able to keep her safe?

Dylan and Kate were wonderful protagonists! I've loved the Buchanan Family series from the get-go. This story is no exception. Although I miss the historical romances that this author used to write, her romantic suspense still entertains. Ms. Garwood is a wonderful addition to the romantic suspense genre.

Blind to the fact that he is a pawn in the Drakh's deadly strategy, Centauri prime minister Durla launches an overwhelming blitzkrieg, sending Centauri warships to devastate other races' homeworlds and pave the way for total conquest.  Yet Durla is forced to fight a war on two fronts.  Even as he mobilizes the massive space fleet for its glorious attack, resistance leader Vir Cotto works feverishly to counter the Drakh's evil influence on Centauri Prime.

Emperor Londo Mollari possesses the key that can reveal the presence of the Drakh, but to do so would spell disaster, so he is forced to remain silent.  But when the Drakh bring another pawn into play--David Sheridan, son of Alliance president John Sheridan--the time for silence may be past.  If Vir and the Resistance are to prevail, it will be only through action, and with help from very strange allies . . .

From the Inside Flap
Centauri Prime declares war on the Interstellar Alliance in Book Three of the epic trilogy that continues Babylon 5's brilliant legacy . . .

If Vir and the Resistance are to prevail, it will be only through action, and with help from very strange allies . . .

Chapter 1

Luddig wasn't a particularly happy Drazi.

He did not like the building to which he had been sent. He did not like
the office within the building. And he most certainly
did not like that he was being kept waiting in the office within the
building.

Luddig was a first-tier ambassador in the Drazi diplomatic corps, and he
had fought long and hard to get to where he was. As he drummed his fingers
impatiently on the expansive desk he was sitting beside, he couldn't help
but wonder why it was that things never quite seemed to work out the way
that he wanted them to.

Seated next to Luddig was his immediate aide, Vidkun. They provided quite
a contrast to one another, Luddig being somewhat heavyset and jowly while
Vidkun was small and slim. Not that Vidkun was a weakling by any means. He
was whipcord thin and had a certain air of quiet strength about him.
Luddig, on the other hand, was like a perpetually seething volcano that
tended to overwhelm any who stood before him with belligerence and
bombast. As diplomats went, he wasn't particularly genteel. Then again,
he'd never had to be. His activities were confined mostly to his office
and occasional backdoor maneuvers.

It was one of those activities that had brought him here, to Centauri
Prime, to the place called the "Tower of Power." It was an impressive and
elegantly simple structure that, when viewed from the ground, seemed to
stretch forever to the sky.

Luddig had not come here on his own, of course. It had been set up
meticulously and scrupulously in advance. No one on
the Drazi Homeworld had been aware that he was coming to Centauri Prime .
. . well, not "officially" aware. He had brought Vidkun along primarily to
have someone to complain to.

"This is how they treat Luddig of the Drazi!" Luddig said in disgust. He
was one of those who chose to affect the popular Drazi habit of referring
to himself in the third person. "An hour and a half we wait," he
continued. "Waiting and waiting in this stupid room for this stupid
minister." He cuffed Vidkun abruptly on the shoulder. Vidkun barely
reacted. By this point in his career, he scarcely seemed to notice. "We
had a deal!"

"Perhaps you should remind him of that, sir," Vidkun said with exaggerated
politeness.

"Remind him! Of course Luddig will remind him! Drazi do not have to,
should not have to, tolerate such poor attention to Drazi interests!"

"Of course not, sir."

"Stop agreeing!" Luddig said in annoyance, striking Vidkun once more on
the shoulder. Since it was the exact same place, it left Vidkun a bit
sore, but stoutly he said nothing. "You keep agreeing. It shows you are
trying to mock Luddig!"

Vidkun tried to figure out if there was any conceivable way in which he
could respond to the accusation. If he said it wasn't true, then he'd be
disagreeing and thereby disproving the contention. Except he'd be calling
Luddig a liar. If he agreed that was what he was doing, Luddig would shout
at him that he was doing it again. Vidkun wisely chose to say nothing at
all, instead inclining his head slightly in acknowledgment without
actually providing any admission one way or the other.

Clearly Luddig was about to press the matter when, with miraculously good
timing, Minister Castig Lione entered.

Lione was a tall man whose build and general look bordered on the
cadaverous. He had such gravity about him that he could have used it to
maintain a satellite in orbit, Vidkun mused. Then he noticed several of
the black-clad youths known as the Prime Candidates following Lione,
dropping back and away from the minister as he walked into his office.
Vidkun came to the conclusion that Lione already did have satellites. They
were the youth of Centauri Prime, and as near as Vidkun could tell, the
best and the brightest. Their loyalty to Castig Lione was reputedly
unyielding and unwavering. If Lione had told them to break every bone in
their bodies, they would do so and do it willingly.

Vidkun did not, as a rule, like fanatics. If nothing else, they tended to
be a bit too loud for his taste.

"Ambassador Luddig," said Lione, bowing deeply in respect. For a man of
his height, bowing was no easy thing. Luddig should have appreciated the
gesture. Instead he scowled even more fiercely. Vidkun rose and returned
the bow, and got another quick physical rebuke from his superior. "To
what," continued Lione, "do I owe this honor?"

"This honor." Luddig made an incredulous noise that conveyed contempt.
"This honor. This treatment is more like."

"Treatment?" His eyebrows puckered in confusion. "Was there a problem with
your arrival? My Prime Candidates were given specific instructions to
provide you full protection in escorting you from the port. I cannot, of
course, account for the reactions your presence might engender among our
populace."

"It has nothing to do with that--"

Lione continued as if Luddig had not spoken. "In case you are unaware, all
foreigners have been banned from the surface of Centauri Prime. That is
how highly charged sentiments have been running. Fortunately, as a
minister, I have certain . . . latitude. So I was able to arrange for your
visit to our fair--"

"It has nothing to do with that!"

Lione blinked owlishly. "Then I am not quite sure what you are referring
to."

"We had an arrangement!"

"Did we?"

"About Mipas!"

"Ah." Lione did an exceptional job of acting as if he had been unaware of
what was getting Luddig so agitated. "You're speak-
ing about the unfortunate, but necessary, attack on Mipas."

"Unfortunate but necessary how! Unfortunate, yes! Necessary . . . Drazi do
not see that! Has Centauri Prime totally taken leave of senses? Or has
Centauri Prime forgotten that Mipas is under Drazi jurisdiction!"

"Jurisdiction, yes. Curious how that happened, isn't it." Lione's calm,
even lazy tone suddenly shifted. "Curious that the Drazi government paid
so little attention to Mipas . . . until valuable minerals were found on
it. Suddenly a world that was just beyond the outermost edge of the Drazi
borders became Drazi property . . . when your government reconfigured the
borders
to allow for . . ." Lione actually chuckled, and it was not the most
pleasant of sounds. ". . . to allow for the expanding universe theory. 'If
the universe is expanding, Drazi territory must
expand with it to keep up with natural law.' That was priceless,
I have to admit. No one in the Alliance gainsayed you, simply because they
were stunned by the sheer gall your people
displayed."

"If Centauri Prime has issue with expansion of--"

Lione held up a hand, stilling the new torrent of words. "The Centaurum
has no such issues. Expand territories all you wish. Reconfigure your
borders and decide that you're entitled to take possession of the Vorlon
Homeworld, for all we care. But Mipas, well . . ." and he shook his head
sadly. "The fact is that our intelligence informed us that Mipas was
acting in concert with, and providing aid to, certain insurrectionist
factions here on Centauri Prime."

"Is lie!"

"Is not," Lione responded coolly. "The information we have received is
quite definitive. Mipas was aiding those who would overthrow our beloved
emperor and drive our prime minister out of office. Naturally, out of a
sense of self-preservation, we had to take action."

Between gritted teeth, Luddig said, "We had an understanding."

"Did we?"

"Do not play games with Drazi!" Luddig warned. "Centauri Prime is as
interested in mineral deposits on Mipas as Drazi!
I know that! You know that! Everyone know that! We had arrangements!"

"And how much you must have enjoyed those arrangements, Luddig," said
Lione. "Under-the-table payments made to you by certain Mipas officials.
And you, in turn, pass those payments along to us. A token of respect; a
tithe, if you will, to purchase our goodwill. And you succeeded for quite
some time, Luddig. I commend you for your industry. And I commend you for
the deftness with which you managed to cut yourself in to those payments.
How much did you manage to keep for yourself? Ten percent? Twenty?"

"Do you think Drazi not take risks!" Luddig said hotly. "Luddig of Drazi
has his own expenses, own concerns. Certain officials turn their own blind
eye to 'under-the-table payments,' as you say. Money has to cover their
eyes, too. It was beneficial arrangement for all."

"Yes, yes, I daresay it was. Just as this little arrangement exists with
other governments, other 'officials' such as yourselves. Others who
envelop themselves in cloaks of self-righteousness, more than happy to
complain publicly about the Centauri, while you have no difficulty in
private backroom dealings. I can smell the corruption in all the
governments of your pathetic Alliance. The odor of hypocrisy permeates
even the vacuum of space, Ambassador Luddig."

Vidkun watched in fascination as Luddig became so angry that the skin
flaps under his throat stood out and turned pale red. "Luddig does not
have to sit here and listen to this!"

"Stand if you prefer, then," Lione said lazily. "It does not matter to
me." Then once again, his attitude shifted, from torpor to quiet
intensity. "Understand this, Ambassador. We stand by the re...

Finally, the rest of the B5 story (NO SPOILERS)
By David E. Woon
With this final volume of the Centauri Prime trilogy, Peter David completes the story of Londo Mollari. I found the first two books in the series to be well-written and completely in tune with the feel of the Babylon 5 universe. But after feeling let down about the conclusion of the PsiCorps trilogy, I wondered if this book would also falter. But it does not. It fills in the gaps and takes us beyond what we've seen in stories like "War Without End" and "In the Beginning." The only negative is that this story wasn't filmed and televised.

Finally the Pieces Fall into Place
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Centauri Prime is a hot bed of activity. Prime Minister Durla has gone power mad, and with that has come paranoia. Londo still does what he can to fight the Drakh, but with the Keeper in place, there is little he can do. Vir, meanwhile, slowly builds an army of revolutionaries. But can they gain strength in time to avoid an all out war with the alliance? All bets are off when David Sheridan is implanted with his own keeper and heads to Centauri Prime.
This is the book that Babylon 5 fans have been waiting for. It finally fills in the gaps left between season 5 and "War Without End" from the third season. As with the series itself, even though we know the final outcome, getting there is half the journey. The pace never lags, and there are several surprises along the way. Once again, Mr. David has captured the characters and series perfectly. The scenes between Londo and G'Kar are some of the best anywhere, and Londo's struggle to redeem himself has never been more touching.
This book is an absolute must for Babylon 5 fans. You will love every minute of the story and leave satisfied. Non-fans will also enjoy the story and characters, but won't have the same connection. Either way, this is a wonderful book to end a highly recommended trilogy

A nice wrap-up
By Michael Hickerson
Peter David's Centauri trilogy comes to a conclusion with a rivetting and entertaining book. To say I'd been looking forward to this one is a bit of an understatement. But I will admit I approached this book with a bit of excitment--and a bit of dread. After the superlative set-up not only by Babylon Five but also by the first two parts of this trilogy, part of me was prepare for a disappointment.
It never happened.
In a short 250 pages that literally fly by, David answers the questions raised by such superb B5 episodes as "War Without End" and "Coming of the Shadows." He brings to a close the character archs for Londo and G'Kar in satisfying ways. And even though long-time B5 fans know how it all ends, the journey there and the emotional ramifications of what we discover in the end may surprise you. I will admit they surprised me.
I would love to sit here and bring up plot points from the book, but to do so is to ruin the reading expereince. You've got to come to it with a set of fresh eyes to really enjoy what happens here. I will say this--if you watched and enjoyed Babylon Five, pick-up this trilogy. It's got the goods. And if you've got someone you are trying to hook on B5, this is a good place to start. David does a nice job of keeping the plot going while giving subtle reminders of important points to the readers. He doesn't summarize who episodes but he does give enough clues so that it will jar memories of long-time fans and let fans who might not have seen the series yet in on the fun. I will warn you this trilogy is far more satisfying if you've seen all of Babylon Five's run, but if you're a new fan or just want a good read, you can't go wrong here.

They used to be partners--Greg Monarch and Ira Sullivan, a couple of do-good lawyers in central California. But it all went bad for Ira. Layer by layer, Greg peels back a tissue of lies--and at the rotten core he comes to Sandy Polson. Sandy says she was with Ira the night of the murder, says she saw the whole thing. The prosecution believes she's the perfect witness. But what if Monarch could persuade Sandy to tell the truth? Wouldn't Sandy then become the perfect witness for the defense?

Amazon.com Review
A beautifully crafted sense of place surrounds prizewinning journalist and nonfiction writer Barry Siegel's debut thriller in a cocoon of credibility, adding weight to a strong story. "If he closed his eyes, Jimmy almost could imagine himself back in the La Graciosa of old," Siegel writes about the fictional town on the central California coast. "Gone now was the cigar factory, the big wholesale meat market, the dairy, the Greyhound bus station... Henry's Hardware, where you could buy everything from kerosene lamps to washboards, was now an empty lot. The meat market was a dress store, the creamery a complex of sushi, cappuccino and moccasin shops. La Graciosa hadn't turned precious yet, but it was fighting the battle." In an area where the most important industry is no longer agriculture but nuclear energy, the town's own power structure has shifted. At its center is a dangerously ambitious district attorney, Dennis Taylor, who will do anything to win. Lawyer Greg Monarch, carving out a quiet living doing estates and wills, has worked for and against Taylor in the past, and has been badly burned on both sides. Now Taylor is about to nail Monarch's best friend and former law partner for murder, and Monarch has only a few faded defensive skills to fight what appears to be another losing battle. But as sharp and surprising as the book's resolution is, it's the image of the fading, changing town of La Graciosa that will stay in your memory.

From Library Journal
Greg Monarch's quiet life as a small-town lawyer is shattered when he is asked to defend his former partner, Ira Sullivan, on a murder charge. Unable to turn his back on an old friend, Greg reluctantly agrees to handle the case. However, he soon finds himself involved in both an ever-widening conspiracy and a moral dilemma. As Greg uncovers a complex web of government corruption and deceit, he is faced with the necessity of bending his own ethical standards and manipulating the star witness, a pathological liar, in order to free Ira. Siegel, author of the nonfiction A Death in White Bear Lake (LJ 6/15/90), offers a rather cynical but realistic view of the machinations behind the legal system combined with a collection of eccentric characters. The result is an intriguing blend of mystery, suspense, and courtroom drama that should appeal to readers of those genres. Recommended for most popular fiction collections.?Barbara E. Kemp, SUNY at Albany Libs.

From Kirkus Reviews
A dogged defense attorney's running battle with an unimpeachable prosecution witness raises disturbing questions about the nature of the judicial process, in this first novel by crime reporter Siegel (Shades of Gray, 1992, etc.). At first Greg Monarch thinks the evidence against his former law partner Ira Sullivan, now one step up from a drugged-out bum, is a joke. The pistol that killed neighboring postmaster Bob Wilson is found on Sandy Polson, not on Ira, along with $33,000 wrapped in one of the postmaster's towels. Sandy's explanation: Ira came rushing out of the post office and gave her the gun and the money to hold, and she was too frightened and confused to say no. The tale is incredible, of course--but she tells it, and the many stories that follow, with an absolute conviction that makes her the perfect witness. Sandy is one smooth piece of work. Whenever Greg threatens to trip her up on a detail, she just weaves his information into a new version just as seamless as the last. And when a dim corroborating witness, Paul Platt, phones Greg to tell him he's been lying under pressure from hungry D.A. Dennis Taylor, Greg--ever the boy scout--refuses to see him, then agrees, only to have Sandy and Taylor turn Paul around again, and Taylor haul Greg up on charges before the California bar. Greg struggles through Ira's trial trying to figure out the case's connection to a runaway jury's earlier rampage against the nearby Devil's Peak nuclear facility. But he gets stonewalled at every turn; he's no match in the courtroom for an accomplished liar like Sandy, and the jury takes only two hours to convict his client. Then things get really interesting. Not a whodunit, but a sharp, unsparing exploration of the conflicts between justice and advocacy in the adversarial system Greg's inherited from the Founding Fathers. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. An intriguing and shocking look at the judicial system
By A Customer
In La Graciosa, California, Ira Sullivan is accused o killing his neighbor Bob Wilson. Ira turns to his former law partner Greg Monarch to defend him. Initially, Greg figures that he can easily get his client, who does not remember anything due to drug usage, off the hook. The murder weapon and $33,000 was found in the possession of Sandy Polson. However, Sandy, who is a witness for the DA, explains that Greg gave her the gun and cash and she was too scared to say no to him.
Greg begins to tear apart Sandy's story, but she conveniently rewrites it to fit every objection he can find. His plan to prove Sandy a liar on the stand fails and is his client is convicted of murder. Greg knows that Sandy is a pathological liar and that the DA wants a scapegoat. Ever the idealist who believes in the justice system (though shaken a bit), Greg has just begun to fight, but the forces opposing him are growing ever stronger.
THE PERFECT WITNESS is a phenomenal legal procedural because of a profound story line that accentuates the conflict between justice and an adequate defense. Greg is a great character as his ideals and friendship are tested to the max. For that matter, so is the American judicial system tested to the max, but unlike Greg, seems to have come up lacking. Fans who read Barry Siegel's novel will bear witness that this is a near perfect novel.

Legal Thriller Reveals Layer Upon Layer of Suspence
By A Customer
Barry Siegel's legal thriller The Perfect Witness begins like a typical murder mystery, but develops into much more as Siegel begins to weave a complex plot that reveals all of the foibles of the legal system and the elusive search for the truth. The conclusion, that only by playing by the corrupt rules of the game can an innocent defendeant find relief are sobering. Siegel is very convincing in showing how things can go very wrong. The portrait of a power hungry prosecutor more concerned with getting a conviction that convicting the guilty party has a ring of truth. Siegel writes with the assurance of one who knows of what he speaks. He also does a good job at conveying a sense of place in the foggy California town. Personally, I didn't feel the characters were fully realized, but the complex plot structure and intriguing ethical issues carry the book. The Perfect Witness is a good read that got steadily more exciting as I went along. I found at the end, I couldn't put it down, and I was a bit disappointed when it was over. I highly recommend this book!
