Another fine literary drama by Jim Davis
By A Customer
The saga of Garfield, Odie, and Jon continues. This dramatic and moving yet highly disturbing portrait of late-nineties domestic suburban sexual denial forces the reader to delve into his/her own tortured sexual psyche, much like Catherine and Heathcliff but as a trio each exploring their own unrequieted desire. The tension is unbearable, and Garfield's repeated replacement of food for sexual yearning is telling of late twentieth-century sexuality. Odie's alienation as a result of Garfield's spurning for the love of his inanimate replacement for Jon, in the form of Pookie, is obviously a compelling metaphor for post-colonial AIDS isolation. Alone in the confusing mire of mixed signals that is their home, poor Garfield has no choice but to seek solace in the soft, safe, squishy bosom of Pookie, denying the pain and self-loathing so apparent in his everyday encounters. Odie, much like Hillary to Bill, pointlessly attempts again and again to win the affections of a reckless, wanton, yet powerful force who has become consumed by his meager life, ironically encouched in power. Jon's unrealized quest for gratification is symbolic of the fall of Communism and is a clever representation of the fall of the wall and the troubles of subsequent unification. Supplanted in a landscape of repression and denial, our three protagonists seek comfort in their base desires: coffee becomes the drug of choice, providing escape from the hell that is life, much like today's "raver" youth seeking comfort in "ecstasy" and "techno". Woe to he/she who proceeds beyond the cover of this prophetic tome! Another masterpiece accomplishment by Davis, sure to keep him in literary courses of the future.

Murder on Capitol Hill (Capital Crimes), by Margaret Truman

Between them, Senator Cale Caldwell and his blue-blooded wife controlled as much power on Capitol Hill as the law would allow. Sadly, it wasn’t sufficient to protect him from a killer, even surrounded by his friends at a champagne reception in his honor.

The senator’s murder wasn’t the family’s first brush with violence. Only two years ago, a niece had been murdered, her killer never found. But when attorney Lydia James, counsel to a senate committee investigating the tragedy, suggests there might be a connection between the two deaths, she’s voted down fast. Yet strange rumors persist. The senator’s death could benefit many people, among them a bitter political adversary, an ambitious talk show host, and a master of spin who makes even murder look

Margaret Truman -- The best of celebrity mysteries
By Tony Adams
None of Margaret Truman's mysteries rise to the level of the greatest mystery writers, but they are clearly the best of the celebrity mysteries and show a real understanding of Washington and politics.

From the Publisher
Through trial and error (and books I won't name) I learned a hard lesson: don't do books unless the source material is good. Books based on movies and television have to stand on their own, entertain without the benefit of a screen. Exciting characters, action, mystery, political intrigue, technology, race relations, romance--excellent fiction incorporates all of the genres. With Babylon 5, the series had been envisioned as a five-year epic, and that epic sports one helluva backstory. That backstory has held the attention of millions of viewers for five seasons--these are dedicated and constant supporters.

All well and good, but I'd been stung before. Initially, I was skeptical. It wasn't until I visited the Babylon 5 studios, met with series creator J.Michael Straczynski, watched the actors at work, that I saw the creative spirit that drove them. The hours they put in are painful to watch. I'm pretty sure Straczynski doesn't actually sleep--he wrote the lion's share of the episodes, including two that won Hugo Awards.

So I was convinced. Now we've got four million hard-core viewers to convert. At least we know the target audience.

Mortimore wrote this book for his writer's fee only
By A Customer
Review of Jim Mortimore's "Babylon 5 Security Manual" : I can honestly say that this is the absolute worst attempt at writing about Babylon 5 that I have EVER seen. Jim Mortimore brings practically NOTHING new to the B5 universe, instead choosing to simply bring back old news and never going any deeper than a surface analysis. And even then, most of his "conclusions" (if I'd dare call them that) are wrong (THE ALLIANCE OF FREE WORLDS???). This book clearly demonstrates that he had no interest in writing this book other than his writer's fee. Even info that has been firmly established during epsidoes is contradicted in Mortimore's book (according to him, telepaths rated P4 and under are not part of the Psi Corps...) He also manages to mispell critical words like Z'ha'dum (or Za'ha'dum two pages later) and Trigati (or Tragati). Comes in handy when you're too ignorant to bother looking things up or actually correcting the book you're selling. I must sa! y that I feel insulted that such trash has managed to be published bearing the name Babylon 5, which, since it first aired, has been a product of unquestionable quality-until now.

Fun for hard core fans
By Kathleen Cobcroft
If you're very into B5, then you will probably enjoy this item. It is good fun, with some interesting detail of the station (although if you're serious enough to buy such a book you will probably already know most of it).
My only real quibble would be that it isn't really that substantial, and after half an hour you feel like another one. :)

OK
By Boris Skrbic
The book is...umm...let's just say...interesting :) in that it contains *authorized* scale diagrams of the station, identicards, PPGs, Shadow ships, scouts, fighters, starfuries, thunderbolts, atmospheric shuttles, maintbots, jumpgates, MinFighters, and White Stars (I think that's about it) drawn by Timothy Earls, the B5 CGI director himself as well as tons of wonderful original CGI photos; however, the text itself seems to have been written without any official input at all - part of it is based on JMS' comments on the nets (VERY irregular especially when it comes to the technical side), while the rest is author's own creation and while logical in general, most of the specifics and fill-in-the-blanks will probably never be used on the show (especially the tons of in-jokes and mistakes). For instance, the dimensions given in the text accompanying the B5 scale diagrams originate from the fan-written station.txt file at ftp.midwinter.com, and these were calculated using direct on-screen measurements of the "Points of Departure" diagram! You'd have thought the writer could have taken the time to measure the official diagram (which BTW is the same as the one in the CD-ROM Guide)

From Publishers Weekly
According to authors Bruce (a prolific health writer) and Thatcher (a reproductive endocrinologist), five to eight million couples in the U.S. currently experience difficulties conceiving a baby. To assist them, and others who may confront the prospect of infertility in the near future, Bruce and Thatcher present a comprehensive examination of the options and technologies available today. From "conception 101" to cutting-edge procedures, this clearly written book guides couples through the causes of infertility and the options available to counteract it. While stressing that certain problems can't be controlled (a parent's age or an inherited disorder, for instance), the authors claim that there has "never been a better time than now to get pregnant." Along with familiar "BMTs" (baby making tips), such as the best positions for conception, they offer a wide range of practical information--including which sexual lubricants may actually interfere with sperm motility, which over-the-counter medications to avoid and how excessive exercise can adversely affect fertility. Lifestyle issues (use of alcohol, nicotine and drugs) as well as environmental and workplace hazards are discussed, with the focus on ways to promote the health of both parents even before conception. The causes and treatments of infertility in men as well as women are covered in depth, making this a valuable volume for both wanna-be parents. Lucidly explicating new and complicated medical procedures, the text helps couples decide on which ART (assisted reproductive technology) may be right for them. This is an essential guide for infertile couples hoping to beat the clock. Also included is a useful appendix of medical acronyms and glossary. (July)

From Library Journal
Today, there are several hundred thousand in vitro fertilization (IVF) babies around the world, and new discoveries and techniques in the field of reproductive medicine increase the success rate every year. Yet for anyone faced with infertility, the future may appear frightening and uncertain. The authors, an expert health writer and a reproductive endocrinologist, provide a readable, informative, and sympathetic guide to this new world of baby-boosting medicines, IVF, sperm injection, and egg donation. They explain how the male and female reproductive systems work and detail the many common, and sometimes hidden, threats to fertility. They offer practical, low-tech solutions, such as lifestyle changes, as well as the more advanced therapies. Understanding how one's body works and one's specific infertility problem, the authors argue, will help readers become empowered participants in their own care. High-tech, low-tech, natural, and complementary therapies are all discussed, as are the pros and cons of current tests and treatments. A glossary of terms, a list of acronyms and abbreviation, and other helpful lists round out this resource. A useful book full of advice and explanations offered with insight and understanding; for all consumer health collections.DJodith Janes, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, OH

Precious book and amazingly helpful!!
By A Customer
After trying to conceive for three of the longest years of my life, we bought this book called Making a Baby. I was attracted to it by the cover! The picture of the baby brought tears to my eyes--it was so dear. Anyway, my husband and I read the book from cover to cover--and LEARNED tons on why we might be having problems. We used the Baby Making Tips--esp. the one on timing ovulation--we'd never done that correctly!! (How were we supposed to know???) Anyway--we DID get pregnant and then we got pregnant again 14 months after our first son was born.
If you are having problems conceiving, this book might help you, too. It definitely was easy to read and the cover made me have GREAT baby dreams!! Good luck!
Oh!! We have TWO precious toddlers now--and we may just do this again in a few years.

Finally--we're having a baby. BUY this book!!

This is a superb book if you think you might need a boost in the fertility department!! While we just got married two years ago, we're in our late 30s and were pretty worried that our biological clocks were running out on us. We tried for nine months with no luck and then used some of the tips in this book. Don't know if the tips helped or not, but we're expecting our first child (a healthy boy!!!) in three months. The book is excellent--whether infertile or not infertile, an older mom who wants to have another baby or late in life parents--this book will help you understand what's going on inside--and what you can do to GET THAT BABY!!! I highly recommend to any couple--and so does my husband!

Excellent & comprehensive resource--Natural therapies ...
By A Customer
Superb book on the problems leading to infertility and what can be done to resolve these. The section on Male Infertility was enlightening--and a must-read for all couples struggling to have a baby. So often we look at the woman when conception does not occur--and half the time it's a "male" problem. Get it checked out--because there is treatment, according to these authors. I was most impressed with the natural therapies sections in the book--and the part on reducing stress was most helpful for me and my wife.

Among Gardner's Best
By Gary F. Taylor
Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) wrote more than one hundred novels over the course of his long career. A trail lawyer himself, Gardner's best known creation was Perry Mason, a flamboyant criminal defense attorney who earns his large fees by virtue of a remarkable talent for using the law to uncover the truth on the witness stand.

Gardner was at the peak of his powers during the 1950s, and THE CASE OF THE GLAMOROUS GHOST, published in 1955, is a very sharply written and very clever work. Written in a staccato, dialogue-heavy style that recalls the works of Hammett, it offers the story of Eleanor Corbin--a flighty young woman with a history of getting into "scrapes." And her current one is a dilly: Eleanor has been arrested for wandering around a park in a nearly naked state. Mason steps in at the request of her mortified family in an effort to control both Eleanor and the press... but when the headlines break it isn't long before Eleanor finds herself on trial for murder.

GHOST has a particularly complicated plot that ranges from lying clients to blackmail to smuggling, but Gardner is adept at keeping every element in the air until the last few pages, at which point they all click into place with unexpected logic. Although laws--and certainly police procedure and forensics--have changed a great deal since this novel was first published, it is a tremendous amount of fun from start to finish. Among Gardner's best. Recommended.

Perry Lights the Way!
By A Customer
For those out there whose only knowledge of Perry Mason comes from the old Raymond Burr series, I implore you to find the books! They're loads of fun, with snappy dialogue, complex plots, and sharply drawn characters. Perry's relationship with Della Street, his confidential secretary, is extremely interesting, not at all the innocent friendship as one might think.
THE CASE OF THE GLAMOROUS GHOST has all the aforementioned elements plus more: beautiful women, murder, misdirection, Perry's client trapped within a web of circumstantial evidence. But it is the trial sequence in this book, which is over 100 pages long, that elevates this novel. Slowly we learn exactly what happened in these people's lives and who REALLY is the villian of the piece. As is true with most Mason books, no one is who they seem.
This is an exciting work, with an above average puzzle. Gardner never, EVER lets the action drag (one of his primary trademarks) and I feel that it will appeal to modern tastes as much as it appealed to those in the 40s and 50s. Let Perry light the way for you in one of his more interesting adventures. You'll love it!

The Glamorous Ghost is a Liar
By APRICOT
Very well plotted mystery. The Glamorous Ghost is trapped by a deadly web of circumstantial evidence. It is partly her fault; she piles up so many lies that even Mason can't believe her. But, as Mason points out, Hamilton Burger, the rival District Attoney, is not a thorough thinker. He often overlooks and/or deliberately ignores some evidence "to keep from confusing the issues". It is superb how Mason digs out such buried evidence through the persistent cross-examination.

Trading in Danger, by Elizabeth Moon

Kylara Vatta is the only daughter in a family full of sons, and her father’s only child to buck tradition by choosing a military career instead of joining the family business. For Ky, it’s no contest: Even running the prestigious Vatta Transport Ltd. shipping concern can’t hold a candle to shipping out as an officer aboard an interstellar cruiser. It’s adventure, not commerce, that stirs her soul. And despite her family’s misgivings, there can be no doubt that a Vatta in the service will prove a valuable asset. But with a single error in judgment, it all comes crumbling down.

Expelled from the Academy in disgrace–and returning home to her humiliated family, a storm of high-profile media coverage, and the gaping void of her own future–Ky is ready to face the inevitable onslaught of anger, disappointment, even pity. But soon after opportunity’s door slams shut, Ky finds herself with a ticket to ride– and a shot at redemption–as captain of a Vatta Transport ship.

It’s a simple assignment: escorting one of the Vatta fleet’s oldest ships on its final voyage . . . to the scrapyard. But keeping it simple has never been Ky’s style. And even though her father has provided a crew of seasoned veterans to baby-sit the fledgling captain on her maiden milk run, they can’t stop Ky from turning the routine mission into a risky venture–in the name of turning a profit for Vatta Transport, of course.

By snapping up a lucrative delivery contract defaulted on by a rival company, and using part of the proceeds to upgrade her condemned vehicle, Ky aims to prove she’s got more going for her than just her family’s famous name. But business will soon have to take a backseat to bravery, when Ky’s change of plans sails her and the crew straight into the middle of a colonial war. For all her commercial savvy, it’s her military training and born-soldier’s instincts that Ky will need to call on in the face of deadly combat, dangerous mercenaries, and violent mutiny. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
Noted for her strong heroines and interstellar naval adventures, Moon (Against the Odds) stumbles in the first of a new series featuring Kylara Vatta, whose "generous impulses" often get her into trouble. Ky, a favored daughter of a wealthy, interstellar shipping family, gets thrown ignominiously out of the Space Academy because she aided a fellow cadet who used her gullibility to dishonor the service. In consolation, her father gives her an antiquated cargo ship, the Glennys Jones, to command. He assumes she'll find a way to make enough profit to keep from having to junk the old tub. But after Ky figures out an angle on buying and selling some tractors, she inadvertently ends up running afoul of an interplanetary civil war. Following another generous impulse, Ky takes some stranded crewmen aboard. They return the favor by nearly getting her killed when mercenaries board her ship. Everyone, from her ship's seasoned crew to random strangers, annoyingly remarks on 21-year-old Kylara's youth and "exceptional" poise. With unusually slow pacing for a space adventure (lacking either the drama or the romance of opera), Moon presents several tableaux that are summarily dropped-such as polo that never gets played, a ship's model with secret instructions that Kylara refuses to decipher and an absentee boyfriend-any of which might have added some spice to this bland adventure.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Ky Vatta has been groomed for a career in her family's interstellar shipping empire, but yearns for the life of a military officer. Sadly, in her senior year at the Space Academy, she is accused of an indiscretion and forced to resign. When she returns home in disgrace, her father hands her what she feels to be a demeaning assignment, though it does make her a captain: to take an obsolete ship to the scrap yard. But before long, the family talent for commerce emerges, and Ky negotiates an independent contract to supply a struggling colony with agricultural equipment from a nearby planet, hoping to realize sufficient profit to buy and refit her ship. The young woman finds herself in the midst of an interplanetary crisis and must prove her mettle. In this human future, commerce is the common ground where a believable variety of peoples, societies, and religions interact, and integrity and intelligence are essential factors in leadership. Entertainingly, Moon creates suspense and reveals character as much through contractual negotiations as through military action. Some readers might not approve of the author's use of shorthand sci-fi conventions to sidestep scientific issues, but for most others, the human interest, well-wrought story, humor, and rich world-building will more than satisfy. The publisher bills this first in a series as military science fiction. It could equally be described as space opera … la Robert Heinlein, or a family yarn that can please fans of Anne McCaffrey's "Rowan" saga (Ace).

From Booklist
Moon's latest begins a new series. The protagonist, young Kylara Vatta, is the daughter of a wealthy merchant family on the planet Slotter's Key. Unfortunately, her initial appearance in the book is inauspicious: she is being tossed out of the naval academy for embarrassing it. Her similarly embarrassed family then gives her a token civilian assignment, commanding an old ship on its final voyage to the scrapyard. Of course, that duty lands her in the middle of a war that, at various times, threatens her profits, her crew, her ship, her reputation, and her life. She finds unlikely allies, however, aboard her ship and among a fleet of high-powered mercenaries, and she learns more about giving her loyalty to those worthy of it. Those discoveries, plus her own formidable, entertaining combination of intelligence, creativity, and naval-academy training, turn a potential disaster into a profitable triumph for the whole Vatta family. I liked it!
By A Customer
This was my first Elizabeth Moon book, so I cannot compare it to the Serrano series (although I do intend to read those). Ky is a great heroine--just the way you wish you had been in your early twenties. She finds herself captain of a spaceship on its last legs and thrust into almost more adventure than she can handle. That's the key word--"almost." She does handle things in a very mature manner, and earns the respect of everyone she meets. I enjoyed the book, although it could have been a little spicier (I'm a romance reader). But maybe this is Ms. Moon's style. I am going to begin the Serrano series and find out.

ho hum ho hum it's off to space we go
By boylan
The book is 275 pages, a little thin and so are the secondary
characters and the plot. Most of the characters are amazingly
one dimensional. Secondary plot lines come and go without
being developed. What is the deal with the model present?
The basic plot is interesting and well structured but the devoid
of the detail one expects from Moon. The book is complete - no
cliff hanger ending although there are plenty of story
opportunities. I hope any further books in this series are
longer and richer.
A Cliff Notes Elizabeth Moon book.

A good start to a new series
By Barb Caffrey
TRADING IN DANGER is a very good read; it's compelling, it's interesting, has many plot elements, and has a likable protagonist. Ms. Moon did an excellent job with the military elements, as I've come to expect over the years of reading her books; she was a military officer, and her analysis and understanding of military matters is spot on.

Thing is, Kylara Vatta's character definitely is that of a maverick wunderkind, which reminds me a bit of the Moon-Anne McCaffrey collaboration SASSINAK, at least of the stuff while Sassinak is young. That's not bad, mind; I enjoyed SASSINAK, and I enjoyed this, too (and the characters really aren't much alike, except for being smart women who've found a way to survive). Nor is this the female version of Miles Vorkosigan, either; Kylara Vatta is not a cell-damaged man stuck in a military society, and I didn't think much about the possible parallels to Lois McMaster Bujold's THE WARRIOR'S APPRENTICE until the book was over.

Trust me; the books aren't that much alike, and I don't think TRADING IN DANGER is a copy of anything.

The only current book I can think of that's anything like this one is Steve Miller and Sharon Lee's BALANCE OF TRADE, although that's not very close, either; still, both TRADING IN DANGER and BALANCE OF TRADE show people making a living by trade and enjoying it. I do think if you liked BALANCE OF TRADE, you should like TRADING IN DANGER as well.

The pluses of this book? It has a very strong female heroine who is self-willed and highly motivated, even if she does get down on herself reasonably often (as young adults often do; sometimes even us older ones). I liked the trade, and the military action, and most of the minor characters (especially the woman from the ISC; her line about "not apologizing for not meeting your prejudices" -- paraphrase mine -- because she was a military vet who dressed in a feminine way really tickled me). And it really was a page-turner.

The minuses? Some of the sub-plots were started and stopped, some for comic effect, some perhaps because there was no room for them here. And I'd have preferred to see a few less people saying how wonderful Kylara was/is; yes, I expect it from her father and some of the others, but a little goes a long way. I'd rather intuit that sort of thing by Kylara's actions, and I'd already made up my mind that she was, in the parlance of this book, "a good'un."

So is this a perfect book? No. Is it Ms. Moon's best book? Probably not. Does it measure up to other space adventures Ms. Moon has written? Yes.

Four stars. Recommended.

COLD PURSUIT

MANTICORE HEADQUARTERS

GILLETTE, WYOMING, 2009

Her bare feet pounding, breaking the crust of ice on the snow-packed ground, her thin blue hospital-style smock hiked high over pumping legs, nine-year-old X5-unit 332960073452 barely noticed the February cold. Neither did she have any knowledge that in other parts of the United States, Valentine's Day was less than forty-eight hours away; that was part of a mundane, ordinary life as unknown to her as her controlled existence had been to the outside world.

Though she had learned much at Manticore, all the girl knew, at this moment, was that she was running for her life.

The deafening whir of choppers circling overhead did not cause her to look up, and she avoided the wide white beams of searchlights that probed, slashed the remote Manticore facility, turning the gloomy woods into a haunted house of light, dark, and shadow.

Brunette locks shaved down to a severe concentration-camp buzz cut, she was small, but not skinny--lean, lithe, wiry . . . and, though unmistakably a child, already battle-hard. Her dark olive complexion gave her a tiny advantage over some of the others, the ones so white they practically glowed when the searchlights neared them, ghosts in the haunted house. Her eyes were large and dark, and she might have been referred to as doe-eyed if there hadn't been something lethal glinting in there, something almost predatory in the way those orbs took in whole scenes and missed no detail.

Sprinting through the woods, she didn't breathe hard, didn't even sweat, as--machinelike--she pumped her arms and pistoned her knees up and down. Her hypersensitive hearing picked up--behind her, farther in the distance with each stride--the ragged breathing of her pursuers, grown-ups who, for all their own training, could only vainly fight to keep up with a genetically enhanced soldier-in-the-making.

The child knew it was true now--they were escaping, they were really escaping . . . though she and the others, her "siblings," could barely grasp the word's meaning. They were well schooled, these soldier kids, but their context was limited. The girl knew "escape" only as something you thought about when you had been captured, after you'd been taken prisoner.

But she and the others weren't prisoners, were they? After all, wasn't Manticore their home . . . the only home they'd ever known?

But that home had seemed suddenly a prison, when the man they trusted, the father figure to these special children--Colonel Lydecker himself--had callously shot one of them down. Eva was dead! For what? Mere defiance?

Now they knew exactly what they were--they were an experiment, an exercise in mutated genetics and military tactics; and they knew, too, what they were worth to Manticore, if that experiment failed: nothing. All the training, all the exercises, all the studying, nine years, her whole life, had shattered into something incomprehensible, within the blast and echo of a single gunshot.

A group of snowmobiles, their engines howling like a pack of wild dogs, flew by her flank, traveling too fast to see her as she pressed herself against a tree, the rough bark weirdly soothing, reminding her she was alive, awake, not dreaming this. The grown-up soldiers looked like futuristic monsters to the girl, in their baggy black fatigues and night-vision goggles, all with laser-sighted automatic weapons, pressing up the hill from the valley in an ominous wave . . .

She took off running again.

Cresting a slope, fleet as a fox, Max found herself in a clearing. After a moment of indecision, she saw a head, Zack's head, rise up from behind a log.

Wordlessly, she moved to join him. As she neared, more kids in the blue-gray nightshirts and pajamas began to pop out from behind other logs and the trunks of trees, like strange, sudden night-blooming flowers. They shared not only the same form of dress, but the buzz-cut hair as well, and this sameness made them interchangeable, their individuality lost.

The last one to reveal herself was Jondy, her smile showing her relief that Max--that was the name her sibs had given her--had finally made it to the rally point. Despite Manticore's constant hammering the point that none of them was more valuable than any of the others, the two girls--who even without the hospital clothing and shaved haircuts resembled each other--had bonded, become sisters.

Behind Max, the roar of the snowmobiles plowing up the hill grew louder. As usual, Zack took charge; the boy could be cool and intense at once. Using military hand signals (a gift their instructors had given them), Zack broke the group into escape-and-evade pairs. One by one, the couples dispersed into the woods, each going in a different direction.

When Zack crisply signaled for her and Jondy to take off, Max shook her head. She didn't want to leave Zack behind; she didn't understand why the sibs were separating--wasn't there strength in numbers?

But the solemn boy again emphatically signaled for them to go. She didn't want to leave him alone, but she had no choice--their instructors had instilled obedience to team leaders--and then Jondy was grabbing her by the arm, and they were taking off into the cold night.

Once again, Max found herself flying through the woods, this time with Jondy at her side. Within seconds they reached the perimeter of the facility, where awaited a seven-foot chain-link fence wearing garlands of barbed wire.

The girls scampered catlike up the fence, eased themselves over the barbed wire--unaware they were centered in the night-vision sniperscopes of their pursuers--and as they dropped to the other side and freedom, Max paused to look back, thinking that had been too easy . . .

Sounds in the night perked her keen hearing and drew her gaze to where Zack turned helplessly at the center of an ever-tightening circle of black-garbed troopers, red laser beams sighting in on him, scarlet dots dancing.

Powerless to help, the young girl watched as Tazer darts struck the boy commander and sent him tumbling down a slope, twitching to the ground, his arms and legs writhing wildly, convulsively carving manic snow angels. She stood rooted to the spot, horrified by the sizzling sound of the electricity, until Jondy tugged on her sleeve and got her moving again.

Max knew now that Zack had saved her life by forcing them to separate; and running away from the fence line that night, she couldn't help feeling that somehow she and Jondy had failed him, possibly even betrayed him, by leaving him to face so many with so little . . .

The belligerent growl of the snowmobiles grew louder as the men on machines closed in on the girls on foot. Seeing an opportunity to slow their pursuers, the young fugitives scampered out onto the iced-over surface of a small pond. The ice appeared strong enough to hold them, but Max felt pretty sure it wouldn't support the weight of those bulky snowmobiles. Behind them, the roar of the choppers increased, like an accelerating scream, and the spotlights turned in their general direction as the gunships joined the pursuit.

They were nearly across the pond when Max sensed the ice going spongy, starting to give way beneath her bare feet, and she had just enough time to hear the sharp crack before the ice exploded under her and she found herself dropping into the frigid water beneath.

So cold it almost burned, the sloshing water stabbed at her like millions of tiny knives; but she ignored the feeling and pushed herself to the surface and gulped air.

Jondy, standing barely ten feet away, called, "Max! . . ."

"Go!" Max yelled, even as she struggled to gain purchase on the jagged edge of the tear in the ice.

"No, we stick together!"

"Go, Jondy, I'll find you. Just go."

The girl hesitated for a long moment until they saw a Humvee come crashing through the gate behind them. Max watched the vehicle chewing through the snow toward her and wondered if the driver knew the pond lay directly in his path. She turned and watched as Jondy dashed toward the forest, the snowmobiles plowing after her, the riders firing haphazardly, their bullets . . . not Tazers, bullets . . . tearing bark off the trees and ripping gouges in the snow.

Then Jondy disappeared into the woods.

To safety? To capture? To execution? Max could only wonder.

Turning back as the Hummer veered around the edge of the pond and just as the headlights were about to hit her, Max took a deep breath and propelled herself below the surface of the water. Through the veil of ice, she could barely make out the Hummer sliding to a stop, and two men climbing out. She couldn't tell for sure with the strange angle, blocked as she was by the partition of ice; but one of them could have been Lydecker . . .

. . . and he seemed angry.

The two men spoke for a moment, their words too muffled for even Max's hyperhearing to make out from her watery hiding place; but the pair climbed back into the Hummer and skidded off into the darkness.

Silence now.

It felt odd down here, so much of her body ashiver with the onset of hypothermia, and yet her lungs burned as if someone held a match to them. Fear still squirmed in her stomach, like a coiled snake, and she felt certain that when she broke the surface, Lydecker and the others would be waiting there to kill her.

She made a decision--such battlefield decisions were part of her training, after all, and instrinsic to her makeup. She would die fighting, rather than just give up. . . .

Max swam back to the hole and broke the surface just as her lungs seemed about to explode. She gulped air, went under again, and pushed her way back to the surface trying to suck in the precious oxygen between fits of coughing. She'd learned another thing tonight: even X5s, like herself, had their limits.

Pulling herself out of the water, she looked around, and was stunned to find herself alone in the dark. She was free. Her next thought was of Jondy, but she knew her first priority had to be taking care of herself. The flimsy gray nightshirt, now soaked with the icy water, offered no protection against the frigid night air.

She needed to find someplace warm, somewhere dry, and she needed to find it soon. Trudging off into the woods, she wandered aimlessly. Though she knew time was of the essence, seconds, minutes, and hours seemed to have lost their meaning and she had no idea how long she stumbled around in the darkness until she finally found herself standing on the edge of a two-lane highway.

The woods she had known--they had played war games there, the terrain was familiar; now she was in a world she recognized only from training videos. Still, she had been taught well--to adapt, to survive, had been instilled.

In the distance, Max could see the glow of headlights. The Manticore Humvees? Or someone else? Someone friendly? Hostile?

Ducking into the ditch, Max turned her cat's eyes in the direction of the oncoming lights and listened for the sound of the engine to grow loud enough for her to discern what it was. The vehicle wasn't traveling as fast as the Manticore Hummers would be going, down a highway anyway. Of course, they could be moving slow, to search the roadsides for her . . .

Genetically enhanced though she was, the child could feel the subzero wind knifing her flesh, sapping her strength. If she didn't find some kind of shelter soon, this short chaotic episode of life beyond the fence would be the only morsel of freedom she'd ever taste. She wondered if she should show herself if the headlights turned out to belong to a Manticore vehicle. If she returned, though the punishment would no doubt be severe, it could hardly be as bad as dying alone in the snow . . . could it?

But those had been bullets, snapping at Jondy's bare heels! Lydecker seemed to have made a decision: capture was not enough; execution seemed at least implied. . . .

Watching the lights inch ever closer, Max knew she wouldn't ever let herself be taken back. Ducking down, she listened intently to the pitch of the oncoming engine. It wasn't a Humvee--she'd heard enough of them to know this was a different vehicle.

Whatever it was, the thing lumbered along on seven cylinders, one of them obviously the victim of a fouled plug. As it topped the next hill over, Max recognized it as civilian . . . a blue Chevy Tahoe--Wyoming plates, AGT 249, not a government plate and not a government paint job.

Preparing for a fight, Max slowly eased herself out of the ditch and onto the road, nightshirt flapping in the chill wind like a defiant flag. In the distance, the sirens still wailed and the choppers still circled the woods, their searchlights oscillating around the forest in search of X5s to latch onto . . .

The Tahoe dropped into a valley, then crested beside Max, the tires sliding a little as the driver stomped on the brakes and locked them up. Max glimpsed the Wyoming plate, AGT 249, then the driver finally got control of the vehicle and pulled it to a stop, the passenger's side door right in front of her.

It swung open, like a slapping hand, and a woman in her thirties with dishwater blond hair to her shoulders and wide-set blue eyes stared down at Max.

"Get in," the woman said. The eyes were a peaceful color, the blue of a mountain stream; but they glistened with fear. "Hurry up! . . . Come on."

In 1.3 seconds, Max completed a threat assessment, reckoned the woman harmless, at least for the time being, and the child soldier climbed into the vehicle and shut the door.

"Get on the floor," the woman said.

Max responded to the command and the woman wrapped her in a gray woolen blanket--Manticore issue!

"It's all right," the woman said, responding to the flared-eyed expression of the girl. "I work for them . . . but I'm not one of them."

Keeping her eyes on the woman, Max said nothing. Better to let the woman keep talking and for Max to use the time to gather her strength. In the meantime, the girl calculated that snapping the woman's neck would be the quickest way to kill her; and Max knew she'd had enough vehicle training to operate this civilian machine. Killing her while the car was moving, however, would add unpredictable factors. . . .

Before the Dawn

If you're a fan of Dark Angel fan fiction, you'll like this book a lot. Max Allan Collins did a pretty good job of keeping with the overall Dark Angel theme, and the story is pretty good. It can be a little corny, and there are a few editing errors, but if you like Dark Angel I would recommend it.

Blood Canticle (The Vampire Chronicles), by Anne Rice

Fiery, fierce, and erotic, Blood Canticle marks the triumphant culmination of Anne Rice’s bestselling Vampire Chronicles, as Lestat tells his astounding tale of the pleasures and tortures that lie between death’s shadow and immortality. . . .

Surrounded by its brooding swampscape, Blackwood Farm is alive with the comings and goings of the bewitched and the bewitching. Among them is the ageless vampire Lestat, vainglorious enough to believe that he can become a saint, weak enough to fall impossibly in love.

Gripped by his unspeakable desire for the mortal Rowan Mayfair and taking the not so innocent, new-to-the-blood Mona Mayfair under his wing, Lestat braves the wrath of paterfamilias Julien Mayfair and ventures to a private island off the coast of Haiti. There, Saint Lestat will get his chance to slay his dragon. For Mona and the Mayfairs share an explosive, secret blood bond to another deathless species: a five-thousand-year-old race of Taltos, strangers held in the throes of evil itself.

The Better Days
By cinemagirl
You know how sometimes you spend hours and hours on a single work -- an essay, perhaps -- deliberating over each sentence, each word? You do lots of research; you proceed very carefully, making sure each sentence is as great as it could be. You are careful with detail. You take the time to craft that work.

OK, you know how sometimes you type a careless e-mail to your friend about your day? Or maybe you're writing in your diary. You don't really care to take the time to be too careful with the imagery or diction. You just write it down for posterity. You just let things flow out.

Well, Anne seems to have abandoned the first method for the second. At first I thought it was me. It started with "Memnoch the Devil." I just couldn't get into it. With the first four novels of the Vampire Chronicles, I felt as if a whole entire world was popping up around me. A lush and ornate world that was full of grandeur -- details about places in Europe or New Orleans, the texture of the curtains, the ambience of the room, the sound of violins, the ferns. It was all very decadent and, quite frankly, amazing. She created this undescribable feeling that no one else could.

Then something went wrong. After she began releasing more books, I realized that it wasn't just me. Maybe Anne was getting sloppy? Maybe she just couldn't sustain her interest in this genre after so many years? Her latest works seem to be written in the same manner that many write in their journals or e-mails. The sense of carefulness, of passion, is gone; it's no longer about the nuances. The subtley is gone. Now it's more like: "This happened . . . then this . . . and oh, don't forget about this." There's a stream-of-consciousness quality going on that comes from a lack of precision. Either she didn't outline this current novel, "Blood Canticle," at all or it was outlined poorly. I understand Lestat's language will change as time goes on. But "yo"? "Baby"? Does he have to sound like a sleazy Hollywood agent? Anne has failed to help readers make that transition; you can't have Lestat speak eloquently and formally in one novel and change his speech so abruptly without having some readers raise objections. His language clearly demonstrates Anne's lack of understanding of how people talk today; instead, she uses language that she thinks people still use today. This is comparable to Kate Beckinsale's "Romanian" accent in "Van Helsing"; she used an accent she thinks Romanians use.

Let me say that I am a huge Anne Rice fan. I think "Interview with the Vampire," "The Vampire Lestat," "The Queen of the Damned," "Tale of the Body Thief," "The Witching Hour," "Lasher," "The Mummy," and "Cry to Heaven," were brilliant. And even though I did not love "Feast of All Saints," I still thought the details were mesmerizing. Anne had that "it" factor going on; she cast magic with her books. She had the ability to transport the reader to any place she wanted, to bring people and worlds alive.

She's been rather prolific in recent years. Personally, I think Anne should take a break. Stop writing a book or more per year. Find that passion again. Take the time to write something really amazing. I truly believe that she spent more time writing her older works than her newer ones. In spite of the negative reviews of her recent work, she should take pride in the fact that she has other books to be proud of; that many of her previous works have changed people's lives; and that she has left a legacy that many will appreciate in the future. If she doesn't have the passion, she should know it is OK to stop writing for a while and bask in the success she's had with previous novels. After all, even the best writers have written books or stories that have fallen into obscurity because they didn't measure up to their most famous works.

More Hybrid Cross-Over Books Mademoiselle Rice...please.
By Et Carter
Only Lestats florid intro to himself and his vacillating (but passionate) opinions turned me off. However, the rest of the book, and the interactions between the Vampires, Mayfairs, and Taltos were like a brilliant dream come true. I wish Anne were more convinced of this books wonderful appeal.
