Amazon.com Review
So you want to write a multivolume, bestselling epic fantasy? Here's the book to help you. The Rivan Codex was published to answer the many letters David and Leigh Eddings have received from students, teachers, and aspiring writers. It's a companion to the 12-book fantasy series comprised of The Belgariad (five books), The Malloreon (five books), Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress. In David Eddings's words, The Rivan Codex "may give the student of our genre some insights into the creative process--something on the order of 'connect wire A to wire B. Warning! Do not connect wire A to wire C, because that will cause the whole thing to blow up in your face." This is a collection of the groundwork David and Leigh Eddings laid for the Belgariad and Malloreon series. On this firm foundation they imagined and built their world in book after book.

There's a fascinating introduction, a personal history of Belgarath the sorcerer, Holy Books, Gospels, Histories, King Anheg's diary, and an afterword. Footnotes tell how the authors used and changed these materials in writing the books. And of course, there are plenty of maps (the starting point for all epic fantasies). --Nona Vero

From Publishers Weekly
Though full of treasures, this farewell to the world of the authors' bestselling Belgariad and Mallorean sagas is rather a mixed bag. The book contains an autobiographical foreword, explaining the roots of the double saga in David Eddings's reading of medieval epics, the editorial influence of the late Lester del Rey, the longstanding but only recently acknowledged role of the author's wife as "unindicted collaborator" and the perils of writing high fantasy in general. The volume then presents a variety of well-crafted pseudobiblia, such as Belgarath's autobiography and many of the Holy Books. It goes on to the historical, economic and ethnographic background of the major nations of the sagas. There are many other pieces that reflect well on the Eddingses' world-building skillsAas if the novels themselves had not already demonstrated their craft. This book may be unintelligible to those who are not Eddings fans, but it will be irresistible to those who are. It is also of some scholarly interest in revealing the roots of one of the founding megasagas in modern English-language fantasy. Science Fiction Book Club alternate selection.

From Booklist
Twenty years ago, David Eddings doodled "a map of a place that never was" and began the creative process for the four best-selling fantasy series, the Belgariad, the Malloreon, the Elenium, and the Tamuli. He created a myriad of plots, stories, "magic thingamajigs," heroes, wizards, villains, and worlds that were used to midwife the birth of each novel. This book contains the original, structural outline of the stories, each of which is annotated, for all the fantasy series. Naturally, details vary from those of the published sagas, and still it is spellbinding--all of it: the various characters' own summaries of their worlds and problems, the maps, the other illustrations, the glossary, and the Eddings' frequent quips and comments. Dazzling fantasy that will captivate those uninitiated in any of the series and beguile old series hands with its storytelling. Karen Simonetti

Buy this book, IF...
By Kevin C.
This is a great book, so long as you have already read the earlier books in the series.
I repeat, THIS BOOK IS LIKELY ONLY WORTHWHILE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY READ AT LEAST THE BELGARIAD (and preferably other books in the series as well).
There, now that that's out of the way, this is actually a really interesting book! If you're looking for a plotline, or new stories of Garion and Polgara, sorry. Not here. What this book does contain, however, is the fascinating history of the work BEHIND the 12 books written thus far set in the lands of the Belgariad. It opens with a short introduction by Eddings, giving some of the history behind the series and some of his reccomendations for the budding fantasy writing. The remainder of the book was actually written before any of the other books of the series. It consists of the histories and texts Eddings designed to give himself an idea of what his world would be like. As I said, no plotline whatsoever. What it does give, however, is a rewarding look in the mind of Eddings. What's more, it made the next time I read the series itself even more rewarding than the last (or the first, for that matter). If you haven't already read the series, it won't make much sense. If you have, however, this is a must-read if simply for the appreciation of the work Eddings put into everything.

Remarkable
By A Customer
I was fascinated by this book. Having read the series many times, I felt that this book served a scholarly function. First, as an interesting introduction to the art and artistry of the authors' procedure, the "personal" chapters are interesting and informative. Second, the background content is fascinating if one is quite familiar with the Eddings' work. I was pleased to read of the corollaries and appreciation of Medieval Romantic Literature. I highly recommend this work if, and only if, the future reader has read the series (perhaps more than once), and has a genuine interest in how the authors work.

Understand what you are buying
By K. McFerrin
I read through most of the reviews for this book, and I think that there is a very common theme among the negative reviews: they didn't know what they were buying. This book wasn't written to tell a story. It wasn't written as a prequel or followup on the books of the Belgariad or the Malloreon. This book was largely written before any of those books were written, because this book is the background of the stories in the Belgariad and Malloreon. I think that a lot of people bought this book with the impression that it was all-new material from the worlds that we already knew.

This is a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at a fantasy world that many of us have enjoyed over the years. As such, a lot of the information presented in this book is already present in the Malloreon and Belgariad. But the point of this book is that there is a great deal of development that goes on before you begin writing an epic fantasy like this. You literally have to create the world before you can create the book. Eddings spent a couple of years developing the characters and the backstory of his books, and this is that backstory. If you buy this book for what it is, you will probably enjoy it immensely. If you buy this book looking for a new story you *will* be disappointed.

As the Yuuzhan Vong’s spectacular conquests continue unchecked, Luke Skywalker, Han and Leia Solo , and Wedge Antilles are forced to destroy what they have risked their lives to create. . . .

Scattering like rats before the Yuuzhan Vong’s invasion of Coruscant, the panic-stricken members of the New Republic Advisory’s Council pause just long enough to set up a mock defense on nearby Borleias—a transparent attempt to buy time that fools no one, least of all the Jedi.

Leia and Han Solo trek from world to world to foment rebellion against the New Republic’s disastrous appeasement policies. But Luke Skywalker has chosen the most dangerous assignment of all: to sneak into the Yuuzhan Vong’s stronghold on Coruscant. His outrageous scheme to gain entry is either brilliant or suicidal, depending on the outcome. And bearing down swiftly on Borleias is a Vong invasion fleet, determined to destroy the galaxy’s remaining defenders. . . .

One Month Ago, Pyria System: Borleias Occupation, Day 1

“A god cannot die,” Charat Kraal said. “Therefore it can have no fear of death. So who is braver, a god or a mortal?”

Charat Kraal was a pilot of the Yuuzhan Vong—humanoid, a little over two meters in height. His skin, where it was not covered by geometric tattoos, was pale, marked everywhere by the white, slightly reflective lines of old scars. Some years-ago mishap had eaten away the center of his face, eliminating even the diminutive nose common to the Yuuzhan Vong, leaving behind brown-crusted cartilage and horizontal holes into his sinus passages. His forehead angled back less dramatically than many of the Yuuzhan Vong and looked a trifle more like the forehead of a human, for which two warriors had taunted him, for which he had killed them. He disguised the trait as much as he could by yanking out the last of the hair on his head and adding skulltop tattoos that drew the eye up and back, away from the offending forehead. One day he would earn an implant that would further mask his deformity and end his problem.

He wore an ooglith cloaker, the transparent environment suit of Yuuzhan Vong pilots, over a simple warrior’s loincloth. Both garments were living creatures, engineered and bred to perform only the tasks demanded of them, to aid the Yuuzhan Vong in their pursuit of glory.

He sat in the cockpit of his coralskipper, the irregular rocklike space fighter of his kind, but he did not wear his cognition hood at the moment; the masklike creature that kept him in mental contact with his craft, that allowed him to sense with its senses and pilot it with the agility of thought rather than muscle and reaction, was set to the side while his coralskipper cruised on routine patrol.

He and his mission partner, Penzak Kraal, were in distant orbit above the world Borleias. The planet had been recently seized from the infidels native to this galaxy so that it could be used as a staging area for the Yuuzhan Vong assault on the galactic throneworld of Coru- scant. Borleias was an agreeably green world, not overgrown with the dead, crusty dwellings of the infidels, not strewn with their unnatural implements of technology; only a military base, now smashed, had affronted the Yuuzhan Vong with evidence of infidel occupation.

The voice of Penzak Kraal emerged from the small, head-shaped villip mounted on the cockpit wall just beneath the canopy. Though most coralskippers were not equipped with villips, relying instead on the telepathic signals of yammosk war coordinators for all their communications, long-distance patrol craft did call for a means for direct communications. “Don’t be an idiot. If a god is the god of bravery, then by definition he must be braver than any Yuuzhan Vong, than anything living.”

“I wonder. Let us say then that you could become immortal as the gods, and never die, but remain one of the Yuuzhan Vong. You would never face death. Could you then be as brave as the Yuuzhan Vong? You could kill forever but never truly risk death, defy death, choose your time and place of death. Which is better, to be brave for a lifetime or to kill forever?”

“Who cares? The choice is not ours. But if I were to choose, I think I would choose immortality. Live long enough, and you might learn how to be brave as a Yuu- zhan Vong again. Kill long enough, and you could perhaps learn to kill a star.”

Charat Kraal sobered. “I have heard . . .”

“What?”

“That the infidels did that. Learned to kill a star.”

He heard Penzak Kraal hiss in irritation; in the villip he saw his partner’s lopsided features go even more off center as his mouth pulled down in an expression of contempt. “So what if they did? They killed it the wrong way, with their wrong minds and their wrong devices. And, like idiots, they must have lost the secret. Or they’d be destroying the worldships one by one.”

“I have also heard . . .” Charat Kraal lowered his voice, a foolish instinct, since no one but Penzak Kraal could be listening to him. “That gods may smile upon them, too. On the infidels.”

“Ridiculous.”

“Can you know the minds of the gods?”

“I can no more know the minds of the gods than summon one of the enemy battleships to destroy for my personal glory.”

In the distance, away from Borleias, many kilometers from them, an enemy battleship winked into existence, its bow pointed toward them. The ship was already up to speed; it grew rapidly as it neared them, as it approached Borleias.

“Penzak, you fool.”

“My words did not summon it, you idiot.” The villip’s face blurred and adjusted, reflecting a change to Pen- zak’s features; Penzak had pulled on his cognition hood. Charat did likewise. His surroundings, the cockpit interior, seemed to become transparent, giving him a view in all directions through the senses of the coralskipper, showing him in breathtaking detail the onrushing enemy ship.

No, now it was ships. More and more of the loathsome things of metal were dropping out of hyperspace, all aimed at Borleias. At Charat and Penzak.

A moment later, Charat could feel a buzz through the cognition hood, a telltale sign that Penzak was sending a warning to the Domain Kraal commander on Borleias.

The foremost New Republic ship, a sharply angled triangle in white, passed over the two coralskippers, blotting out the sun, casting them into shadow. Nowhere near so large as a Yuuzhan Vong worldship, it was still of impressive size, and so near that Charat felt he could reach out and drag his finger along its hull as it passed.

Penzak Kraal sent his coralskipper into a dive and turned to match the larger craft’s course. Charat paced him. Above, he saw thruster gouts from the ship’s belly herald the launching of the hated infidel starfighers.

“How do we hurt them worst?” Charat asked.

“Follow me in,” Penzak said. “While they’re launching. Don’t engage the fighters; bait them so they follow us. The ship won’t fire on us with the fighters in close proximity. We’ll enter their launching bays and destroy the facilities there, then gut the ship from within.” He looped around, rising and angling in toward the ship’s belly. Charat followed.

Mon Mothma, one of the newest cruisers in the New Republic’s fleet, a Star Destroyer refitted with gravity-well generators capable of interfering with the short jumps made by Yuuzhan Vong craft, cruised straight toward Borleias from the point where it had dropped out of hyperspace. This hadn’t been a timed drop—they’d plotted a course straight for the planet Borleias, and the planet’s gravity well had dragged them into realspace when they’d come close enough. And now before them was the blue-green world they had come to recapure.

“No sign of a Yuuzhan Vong worldship in orbit,” reported the sensor officer, a Mon Calamari male with deep blue skin. “The two coralskippers are turning to engage.”

General Wedge Antilles, a lean man with a careworn face and military posture, commander of the fleet group for which Mon Mothma was the flagship, nodded. “Gunnery, stay on them, vape them if they come against us. Fighter control, continue launching starfighter squadrons.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Yes, sir.”

Data screens lit up with colored blips as New Republic starfighters—X-wings, A-9s, B-wings, E-wings, and more—streamed out of the docking bays and turned toward the planet. Wedge, standing at the captain’s station toward the rear of the spacious bridge, ignored the screens. He concentrated instead on the live view of Borleias, which filled the main viewport at the bow end of the bridge.

I hope the Vong here have come to love this world, he told himself. Because I’m going to take it from them. They’re going to learn what it is to lose the things they love.

Luke Skywalker hit his thrusters. His X-wing roared out of the main docking bay, losing altitude relative to the Mon Mothma. Behind him, eleven pilots of Twin Suns Squadron, the temporary X-wing squad that was his command, formed up on him. “Twin Suns away,” he said.

“Twin Suns, copy.” That would be the controller on Mon Mothma’s bridge. “Be advised, two coralskippers are maneuvering into your flight path.”

Luke glanced at his sensor board. Two red blips were indeed turning from below to head toward them. “Squadron, follow me out, let’s give these two the gauntlet treatment.”

He heard a chorus of acknowledgments. There was tension in some of the voices, but not alarm. All his pi- lots were veterans, survivors of the Sabers, the Shocks, and other squadrons that had been reduced to shield trios, wing pairs, and solo pilots during the Yuuzhan Vong attack on Coruscant mere days earlier. Two of them, forming with him a shield trio, were his wife, Mara Jade Skywalker, and the Corellian-Security-officer-turned-pilot-turned-Jedi named Corran Horn. All his pilots were disciplined and competent. Many wanted revenge.

Luke understood how they felt. The Vong, aided by their human agent Viqi Shesh, had almost managed to kidnap his and Mara’s infant son, Ben, just days ago. They had killed his nephew Anakin, and his nephew Jacen was missing. The losses, especially that of his apprentice Anakin, created an ache within him that he could not soothe.

In his youth, Luke would have been anxious for payback, but today he set that portion of himself aside. That was dark side thinking, immature thinking. It had been a long time since he had been a smooth-faced innocent; the scars of combat and lines of age had accumulated on his face, matching the weight of experience and calm that had accumulated on his spirit.

He extended his perceptions and sought Mara with them. He found her and almost flinched away from the contact; she was now an icy presence, concentrated totally on their mission.

He shrugged. Iciness was better than one alternative. Mara, despite her cool and controlled manner, was as anguished as he by the near loss of Ben and the loss of their nephews, and it would be no surprise to find her lit like a lightsaber with a desire for revenge. The fact that she wasn’t meant that she was in control.

“S-foils to attack position,” Luke said, and suited action to words by flipping the switch that split the X-wings’ flight surfaces into their familiar X-shaped attack profile. “First and third trios, take the leader, the rest on the wingmate. Fire at will.” He linked his lasers to quad fire, so that all four would fire with a single press of the trigger, and opened up on the lead coralskipper. Four red streams of destructive laser energy lanced out against the coralskipper—

No, it was eight streams. Luke’s burst, aimed at the starboard side of the skip, never reached its target; a blackness appeared before it, distorting space around it like a gigantic magnifying lens, drawing the laserfire into it. Those four red lances of energy simply bent and dis- appeared. But Mara’s burst, aimed at the port side, hit the coralskipper an instant after Luke’s vanished. He grinned; she must have been using her own Force abilities to monitor him, as well. She couldn’t have timed it so expertly otherwise. Her lasers raked across the enemy starfighter’s hull until the distortion flicked over to interpose itself, then Luke fired again, chipping away at the coralskipper’s stern. His blasts were joined by Corran’s. The coral-like material of the skip’s hull superheated and the lasers tore red-hot gouges along the surface.

Funny and well-written
By Nom de Guerre
I found this to be a real relief following the illogical and obnoxious orgy that was Dark Journey. Rebel Dream may start slowly in comparison to the bawdy outrageousness of Elaine Cunningham's book, but once Allston gets into the material he clearly loves the most--military intelligence and the interactions between pilots in their squadrons--he strikes a rhythm and the story reads quickly. It is full of humor, which somehow manages to remain appropriate alongside the various, quite serious, story lines--the death of the New Republic, Jaina's (this time believable) grappling with the loss of her brothers and friends, etc. The formation of a new rebellion really restored some of the vitality of earlier Star Wars books and of the original trilogy itself. Similarly, by avoiding writing over-the-top main characters, Allston revived my interest in Jaina, Jag, and Kyp. I haven't really liked Jaina since the Dark Tide duology, and it was almost surprising to find myself sympath
izing with her again. Jag always seemed incredibly boring to me, but in this book he became more fleshed-out and his brilliance as a pilot and tactician became evident. And Kyp has finally started to seem like a reasonable guy, with something more to him than anger.
Ultimately, this wasn't the most exciting NJO book, but it was really well-written and much more enjoyable than most. I think I can safely blame the only parts of the book that annoyed me on Elaine Cunningham's botched job, because I only ever rolled my eyes at the book early on, when people showed a lot of faith in Jaina, who was a totally untrustworthy person in Dark Journey (to say the least). Had Cunningham done a half-way decent job with her conclusion--Jaina's "redemption"--these episodes would have probably seemed a lot more reasonable. It's worth noting that all the "themes" Dark Journey attempts to treat but ends up horribly mangling or misrepresenting, Aaron Allston pulls off convincingly and compellingly in Rebel Dream--most remarkably, political subversion, grief, and romance.

Good enough continuation of the NJO Series
By Michael Ludwig
I love the NJO books and this one does not disappoint! Although it is the first half of a two-book miniseries, the author fully developed the characters involved and does a great job leading into the ending and preparing the reader for the next book. Would highly recommend for any Star Wars fan!

Finally - a good NJO book
By Niko
Thank God for Aaron Allston.
Finally. True to form, the X-Wing veteran breaths some life into this series. Can't wait for the Rebel Stand (part II).
The fun characters are back, the action scenes are back, without sacrificing the plot or the "bigger issues". This guy is good.
I was thrilled that some of the Wraiths made appearances. Will Lara Notsil show up next? Pleeeaaase mr Allston!
Also Wedge and Tycho and Lando and Horn and.. the Lusankya. Yeah baby! we 're fighting back. The "I suggest you destroy another one" scene, between Lando and the War Droid is hilarious. Vintage Allston.
After the dumb killing of Anakin (what IS the point of building up the coolest character since Coran Horn to kill him off a couple of books later?!) I almost stopped reading this series. Dark Journey was sad - could have summarised the entire book in less than 100 pages...
Read this one people, it's worth it. FINALLY...

A Clock Without Hands: A Novel, by Guy Burt

“I want to turn back the hands on the clock and change it all, make it different; three friends who meet up by chance in an old city and share a beer and laugh at old stories and jokes. But it wasn’t like that; and the clock has no hands, so I can’t turn them back.” [p.171]

Alex Carlise has returned to a place he thought he’d never see again, outside of his dreams. As he walks the ochre-dusted road to the house in which he grew up, the memories of his young life in a small Italian town push all other thoughts out of his head: thoughts about the major exhibition of his artwork opening soon in London, thoughts of the myriad things he should be doing in preparation–everything subsides to make room for the warm flood of a time long past.

When he opens the door to the now-deserted house, he is suddenly seven again. There is Jamie, his first friend, his best friend; Anna, his first love; and the delicious days they spent exploring the valley and swimming in the cerulean blue Mediterranean Sea. It all comes back to Alex in a way he can neither control nor discern. But the memories are insistent, demanding. Soon Alex loses entire hours to the past, overwhelmed by the haunting memories of a youth turned tragic.

Alex remembers the day he, Jamie, and Anna went to their favorite place, an abandoned church far up in the hills. There they stumbled upon a man, injured and sick. From this discovery, a series of events tumbled forth that would change them all forever. Alex now realizes that he must confront the truth about himself, about the echoes of the past that still haunt him, and about the friends whose legacy has meant only devastation.

Guy Burt’s vision of youth is piercingly accurate, and his sense of how time can play tricks on the mind is startling. Haunting, eerie, and remarkably assured, The Clock Without Hands will resonate with the child that hides inside your own memories.

From Publishers Weekly
A heart full of sorrow beats at the center of this brooding novel, Burt's third (following The Hole and Sophie), about English painter Alex Carlisle, who is struggling to come to terms with the tragic fallout of a childhood adventure. The bulk of the novel takes place during the summer when dreamy, "slow" Alex is eight and living with his expatriate family in Altesa, Italy. He; his best friend, Jamie; and Jamie's headstrong cousin, Anna, find a man with a gunshot wound to his leg and nurse him back to health, though they gradually come to suspect that he's a dangerous terrorist. Eventually, the three go their separate ways—Jamie to an English boarding school, followed later by Alex, and Anna back to her family's home in northern Italy. In school, Alex turns to art, painting eerie pictures of the fateful summer, and Jamie slowly lets Alex in on his new, semisecret life as a jazz saxophonist, though his feelings for his friend are complicated and painful. It is Anna, however, who is most altered by their contact with the wounded man, and it's she who propels the novel toward its tragic conclusion. A heavy cloud of portentousness hangs over Burt's story, but despite its self-consciousness, this is an intriguing, involving read.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School - Alex, now in his 40s, has returned to a small Italian town where he spent idyllic summers during his childhood with his constant companions Jamie and Jamie's cousin Anna. He flashes back to a time when, exploring a deserted chapel in the hills, they find an injured man, who begs them not to go for help. Anna swears them to secrecy, and their lives change forever. They discover that the man has killed someone, but the girl spends hours listening to him as they help him heal from a gunshot wound. Then he disappears. Yet he is at the story's heart. He sends a menacing card: "Thinking of you." At 13, Alex follows Jamie to school in England, but Jamie pulls away. In their mid-teens, the two go to Florence on a school tour, and Anna joins them. In their 20s, Anna and Alex meet again in Florence. She refuses to talk about Jamie's death, supposedly an accident. Then a nightclub they visit is bombed and Alex realizes that they were all targeted. His mind constantly flashes back to past events, sometimes confusingly. But the story is gripping, and its lessons haunting: a child is turned into a tool for terrorists; a secret kept can have life-changing consequences; friendship and love can crumble under the weight of change. - Molly Connally, Chantilly Regional Library, VA

From Booklist
On the eve of a major retrospective exhibition, Alex, an English painter, travels to Italy to put his childhood home up for sale. The trip is really an excuse to think and make sense of his work. But when an impulsive decision to repair the house becomes an obsessive effort to restore it, Alex realizes that understanding his art and understanding his life are the same thing. He revisits, in vivid detail, youthful scenes with his best friends, Jamie and Anna--and one summer in particular, whose strange events mark their paths forever. Burt won a prestigious writing award at 12 and published his first novel, The Hole (2001), at 18. It's interesting that his themes here include a lost, Edenic innocence and an overwhelming desire to live in the time before adulthood ruined everything. The passages with the morose, middle-aged Alex, though brief, sometimes drag. But the bulk of the book is excellent. Fittingly enough, Alex's lyrical remembrances have an exuberance and physicality that transport the reader. Keir Graff

See What's Become of Me
By Haven Isle
After a death in the family, Alex has returned to his childhood home, which prompts him to re-live the events in his life in which he has purposefully chosen to forget. Throughout the novel, he seeks to understand how the events of one summer could change his life forever.

The majority of the novel takes place in Alex's childhood, where he and his best friends Anna and Jamie stumble upon "the hermit" in a deserted chapel. The hermit is a mystery- he is critially wounded yet pleads that the children don't seek help for his injuries. Instead, the three friends take it upon themselves to care for the hermit for the duration of that summer. The secret kept among Alex, Jamie, and Anna forms an unbreakable bond, yet they soon realize that knowing the true nature of the hermit may haunt them for the rest of their lives.

As you follow the three friends into their teenage and adult lives, Alex struggles to keep their friendship strong, not fully understanding the consequences of that summer's events. It is only in retrospect that Alex begins to realize how fluid time is- how things sometimes cannot be fully understood until it's too late to change them.

Guy Burt has written the novel in a style which reflects the scattered memories of the narrator, which lends credibility to the emotional impact of the story. Although some plot lines where somewhat predictable, there were other events in the novel which were completely shocking. I was touched by this novel, and I would strongly recommend this book.

Excellent - captivating - haunting!
By S. C. Matthews
Years ago I spotted this book as I was getting ready to board a train from London to Edinburgh. The English title is The Dandielion Clock. I started reading and was hooked at once - a couple breaks for meals and little more - I finished the book before our trip was done and have recommended it anyone and everyone looking for a great read.
The characters, the setting, the story will all capture your attention and imagination and hold you from beginning to end - I assure you!

Haunting
By Edmond Dantes
This is a beautifully written and absolutlely haunting book, the plot of which travels effortlessly back and forth through time. I read the book in one sitting, only stopping to eat and sleep briefly. It has elements reminiscent of two of my favorites: John Fowles, and Alfred Hitchcock. There is real suspense in this book, and deeply moving relationships. Guy Burt understands the fluidity of time well, which is surprising in one so young (judging from the author's photo). I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to those who remember their childhood as a mysterious time, full of clues needing to be uncovered. My only criticism is that I felt it should have ended a chapter earlier, and didn't care for the last chapter as it leaned toward sentimentality which the author had managed to avoid up until then.

KILLJOY

Avery Delaney has always tried to put the past far behind her. Abandoned by her rapacious, conniving mother when she was only three days old, Avery was raised by her grandmother and beloved aunt Carolyn. Then, when she was eleven, she witnessed her grandmother’s violent death, before Avery herself was shot and left for dead. Miraculously she survived. The man responsible is serving time in a Florida prison. This traumatic experience propels Avery into a life of law and order.

Her razor-sharp mind and ability to gather data and decipher evidence has made Avery an expert crime analyst for the FBI. But soon she will have to use every one of her adroit skills on a case that hits painfully close to home.

Avery’s workaholic aunt, Carolyn Salvetti, is certain her (hopefully soon-to-be ex) husband sent her the gold embossed reservation to the posh Utopia Spa in the mountains of Colorado. At first she is resistant, but then figures it will be a welcome respite from the cutthroat advertising business, not to mention a networking extravaganza. Plus she persuades her niece to join her for the two weeks of luxury and decadence.

But Carolyn never makes it to Utopia. Under false pretenses, she is taken to an isolated retreat by a handsome stranger with a dazzling smile, suave demeanor, and the darkest of motives. His name is Monk, a hired assassin. Now, with scant clues and fewer resources, Avery must track down and save Carolyn—and outmaneuver a brilliant killer who is part of an elaborate plot of madness and lethal vengeance.

Another damn fine read!!
By Kindle Customer
Every time Garwood writes about a character so good that you think this character is alive and whistling Dixie.. That's the case with John Paul Renard, Avery and Monk. Read for yourself. Question. How about a book on Remy Renard? You see? Garwood leaves you wanting for more.

slow start....too many irons in the fire
By A Customer
Julie Garwood usually delivers a novel with deep, carefully crafted characters who pull the reader in and make them care. Humor is quirky and endears readers to those characters. For those of us who see KILLJOY as an extention of the Heartbreaker/Mercy saga, the side bars of Carrie's marriage and extended interactions between Monk and Jilly made the book drag. The first 80 pages could have been condensed to about 20, and the novel would have flowed smoother. I found the sheriff to be a much more compelling character, and he only had about five pages in the book. I found Monk and JIlly, especially Jilly, to be stereotyped characters. By the time we got to John Paul, who was shallowly sketched, and Avery's meeting, I was saying to myself, "It's about time!" I enjoyed the interplay between the two and the way they learned about each other, but readers learned little about John Paul other than lightly touching on his "secret" past. Noah's cameo was too brief, his only purpose to raze John Paul. I'll admit that I had high expectations, but the book didn't measure up to Garwood's talent. Maybe Noah's story will have better focus.

waiting for Carrie Salvetti to arrive but when he saw the most beautiful girl he has ever seen
By Linda Murphy on
Outstanding thriller by Julie Garwood in book 3 of the Buchanan/Renard/MacKenna series. Filled with thrill-seeking moments, total excitement, suspense, not to mention, a full-blown romance. It's one of those books that is impossible to put down!...........After witnessing the brutal murder of her grandmother as a child and surviving a vicious attack on herself, only to be left for dead, FBI Analyst Avery Delaney believes she can finally put the past behind her. When she joins her co-workers at the FBI, they are concerned that Avery looks frazzled but as she explains that her neighbor, a kindly elderly lady, accidentally hit her with her car, no one thought anymore of it. Meanwhile, Avery, being contacted by her Aunt Carrie, known CEO of her million dollar company, "Star Catcher", has invited Avery to join her in Colorado for two weeks, to an exclusive spa, known as Utopia, given as a gift by her husband Tony. Avery agrees but when Carrie gets there, along with two other ladies, they are met by a handsome gentleman, by the name of Monk Edwards, telling them that their plans have been temporarily changed, due to a flood at the spa, leaving Carrie to text Avery to let her know, not realizing the text didn't go through. John Paul Renard sat patiently at the spa, waiting for Carrie Salvetti to arrive but when he saw the most beautiful girl he has ever seen, just walk in the front door, straight to the desk, he knew she had to be but one word to describe her...plastic! No woman looked that gorgeous but when he heard the woman's fears, and the name of Carrie Edwards, he didn't hesitate when he joined her at the front desk. That's not what piqued John Paul's attention though, as he heard her say the name of Monk Edwards. Demanding to know where she heard that name, Avery showed him the text message, and in seconds, he was on the phone with Noah Clayborne, a notorious FBI Agent, and both men realizing that the women were most likely dead. As John Paul leaves the building, without another word, determined to leave, Avery stops him and begs for his help. Never in his wildest dreams, did he ever want to help this woman, and he told her so, but he agreed to help, only causing them to bicker, throw insults at the other, while trying to keep a sane mind. Avery thought he was obnoxious, arrogant, rude, and downright sexy, unthinkable! He realized that her beauty was real but he had to remain focused. When he explains that Monk Edwards, known asassin, tried to murder his sister Michelle, back in Louisiana, Avery doesn't hesitate when she has her friends at the FBI do a background check on John Paul, discovering he was once CIA, with a closed file. What did that mean? As their lives become a constant target with Monk himself, it doesn't take long for the walls to come down, and the electricity to spark between Avery and John Paul, facing Avery with the worst revelations of her entire life. Was the accident at her apartment building deliberate? Was she a target after all? When one clue after another begins mounting up, John Paul makes two promises to himself, first, kill Monk Edwards if it's the last thing he ever does, and secondly, protecting the woman he loves at all costs, before the night is over, so help him God!......great thriller by Miss Garwood!.......thank you.....♡♡

Amazon.com Review
Don't start reading The Last Detective with much on your calendar. This tense, satisfying thriller will glue you to your chair, as private eye Elvis Cole--the star of eight previous Robert Crais novels, prior to the Cole-less Demolition Angel and Hostage--faces his toughest case: the abduction of his girlfriend's son, 10-year-old Ben Chenier, who was staying with Elvis when he was snatched.

Panic at Ben's disappearance turns to terror when the kidnapper phones to reveal his apparent motive, a dark secret from Elvis's past. But the plot thickens and twists, and then twists again, as Elvis and his longtime buddy, tough guy Joe Pike, race the clock against a group of villains as sinister as they are capable. The author mixes Elvis's first-person narration with third-person sections that describe other points of view--a risky technique, but Crais makes it work. He also does a fine job resurrecting the wisecracking Elvis of earlier books while imbuing him with a new depth and darkness.

This dazzlingly plotted, crisply told story is threaded with real detection (what a rarity!) and peopled by characters you can't help but care about--including Carol Starkey, the haunted bomb-squad cop from Demolition Angel, who's now a juvenile-abduction detective. Crais has long been getting better with each book, and The Last Detective continues the pattern. --Nicholas H. Allison

From Publishers Weekly
Elvis lives! Elvis Cole that is, Crais's iconoclastic, smart-aleck L.A. PI, last seen in Indigo Slam (1997). Violent and action-packed, this eighth book in the series has less of Cole's usual wisecracking but all the intensity and convoluted plotting of his two recent stand-alone thrillers, Demolition Angel (2000) and Hostage (2001). Cole is babysitting Ben, the 10-year-old son of his lawyer lover, Lucy Chenier, when the boy is kidnapped. As Cole and his super-tough, enigmatic pal, Joe Pike, join the police in the search for Ben, Lucy's obnoxious ex-husband, Richard, arrives from New Orleans with his own investigators. At first, the kidnappers imply they're seeking revenge for atrocities Cole committed in Vietnam. Several powerful, beautifully written flashbacks to Cole's horrendous Nam experiences and his troubled childhood follow. The narrative switches between Cole's vivid first-person point-of-view and a third-person account of a brave, frightened Ben and his savage captors. As the kidnappers' deadline nears and disturbing motives surface, the suspense becomes almost unbearable. The terrible, heartstopping climax is so well written that time seems to stop. Crais combines the thriller and private eye genres into a dazzling novel that is far more accomplished than the sum of its parts.

Robert Crais does it again!!
By Janet Slezak
What can I say about Robert Crais and his Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series that I haven't said before? In my opinion, he is simply the greatest author out there and I knew I didn't have to wonder about whether I would enjoy THE LAST DETECTIVE. It was simply excellent!
Elvis is watching his girlfriend Lucy's 10 year old son Ben while she is out of town, and in a matter of minutes he vanishes. After searching for him and having no luck he gets a phone call from someone telling him that the boy has been kidnapped as "payback for what he did." Poor Elvis has no idea who this person is and contacts the police, but you can bet he is determined to find Ben himself with Joe Pike's help and of course there is never a dull moment. I read it in less than a day because I could not bring myself to put it down.
Robert Crais reveals a part of Elvis that we've never known, and around that writes an excellent story that gives the reader an example of how important having family and friends in our everyday lives is. Although it is filled with the usual suspence of a Crais novel, it is at the same time a touching story.
Add this novel to your MUST READ list now. If you are a Robert Crais fan, or have never read his novels before, you will not be disappointed.

Trouble in Paradise
By Gary Griffiths
"The Last Detective" is a bit of a departure from Robert Crais' standard Elvis Cole fare. The usually wisecracking Cole is subdued; the unflappable Joe Pike at times uncertain and and even shaken. The plot, centered around the kidnapping of Cole-girlfriend Lucy Chenier's young son, explains the somber tone, as few scenarios are more disturbing than one in which a child's life is in jeopardy. The author's treatment of the characters is more developed than in previous installments, dispassionately exposing the brutal and troubled pasts of both Cole and Pike. Considering the deteriorating relationship between Cole and Chenier, LAPD inter-office politics, the arrogant and scheming father of the boy, and a trio of truly bad... criminals, this is one dark and foreboding tale. There is ample mystery and some intersting twists, complemented by some very convincing crime scene forensics and detective work. Crais pulls this all off with his usual efficient grace and style, spinning a tight drama that once underway builds to a riveting and non-formulaic conclusion.
If there is a criticism - and this is minor - it is a unsettling sense that with the number of important issues uncovered, there were simply not enough pages allowed to adequately address them all. I couldn't help feeling that an over zealous editor stripped away much of the author's intended content which, while not confusing the story, leaves a vaguely unfinished feeling to some of the most important messages Crais apparently wants to convey.
But don't let this put you off. "The Last Detective" is a solid and fast read, unique in the series, and well worth the investment of time and money. As always, I'll be anxiously awaiting his next effort.

Have to admit he's getting better.
By Charles J. Marr
Would I buy this book? Yes. Why? I came in with and admit I struggled through Voodoo River. This one is just a lot better. Crais had a tough time setting up the Elvis Cole/ Lucy Chernier relationship the former novel, subsequent work seems to have made the writer comfortable with the device, and he works it into the plot structure (I don't think it gives anything away to reveal that by the end of the novel we learn that Lucy's ex is a good/bad guy. Could he reprise?) Joe Pike and Elvis Cole also develop as characters via flashbacks to childhood, wartime and other experiences entangled with plot events . In all of this Crais' prose is clear and driving toward the conclusion. There is little wasted space in this novel. No philosophizing a la Tom Clancy over nature of BAD/bad guys nor confrontation by forces of good with suchlike. ( I thought that ground was covered in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence") Cole and Pike smite the wicked. Curiously, however, as Cole becomes more human he loses some charm. The wisecracking, rogue "world's greatest detective" is now more the world's toughest detective. This may be as far as this can go without Crais losing the character, but for the time being, ENJOY.

From Publishers Weekly
Well-known psychologist and author Houston begins this highly adventurous book with a poetic retelling of the Egyptian myth of nature goddess Isis and her brother and husband, Osiris, the legendary ruler and god of the underworld. She then chronicles the cult of worship of Isis and Osiris, a chief religion of the Roman Empire until around A.D. 400. Mining archetypal spirituality in the manner of Joseph Campbell, Houston sifts ancient Egyptian myths for their contemporary relevance as keys to personal transformation. Finding love amid sorrow, accepting loss and death, reconciling body and soul are among the lessons she gleans from the Isis/Osiris legend, to be achieved by "entering an Egyptian state of mind, allowing for the simultaneous existence and experience of all things in motion." To that end, she sets forth self-help exercises, including journal-keeping, dreamwork, creating sentences in hieroglyphics, body movement, meditation and sailing with Osiris into the underworld.

From Library Journal
Houston, a philosopher, psychologist, and author of Godseed: The Journey of Christ (LJ 4/1/92), invites reader participation in a sacred journey of the mind linking the trials of the modern world with the tribulations faced by gods and goddesses in Egyptian mythology. Houston retells the ancient story of Isis and Osiris, twins borne by the heavenly goddess, Nut. In interpreting hieroglyphic thought patterns, Houston draws numerous parallels between Egyptian myths and Old and New Testament stories. Participation in the myth journey is outlined in 14 steps that "coincide with 14 scattered parts of the broken body of Osiris and are symbolic of the process an individual goes through in reclaiming and reuniting the broken, scattered parts of a lifetime." The anticipated discovery is "that their stories are our stories" and as we understand how they dealt with their lives, we gain insight into ours. Recommended for religion collections.

allright book...
By Kim R.
I know alot of the myth in the book isn't proven to be true as of now, with all my reading. But it is a very nice story. It is just kind of all over the place, and seperated with exersizes, like a school book or something. I thought the myth was wonderful, it gave such detail and all of Osirus and Isis, and the other Gods and Goddess involved. The book includes some information about Horus, Seth, Nephthys, Ra, Geb, and some others. It's a pretty nice book. I dont care for the exersizes, I just wanted to read and learn more about the myth, some of it in here is exagerated, but other than that it's nice.

for the open-minded spiritual person
By Francesca Jourdan
This exploration of the world's most transcendent story of love is rewritten in its entirety within the first chapters. The reader lives the Egyptian tale of the twins Isis and Osiris through a dramatic romanticization of the renowned myth. The author shows how, via detailed exercises, this myth relates to the modern design of marriage and provides the reader with the search for oneself throughout.

The Sound of a Voice Thinking The self-explorer, whether he wants to or not, becomes the explorer of everything else. —Elias Canetti

It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.” In the one hundred and fifty years since he issued his once radical decree, self-trust, in the guise of “self-esteem” and “self-confidence,” has become a commonplace goal. But that trust is still elusive for most of us. Despite our openness to self-exploration, efforts to acquire it often fail.

Yet so much of what is worthwhile in life is grounded in self-trust: relationships, finding the right work, your ability to learn and create, your willingness to take risks, connection with your desires and your ideals. Self-trust allows you to appreciate the quality of your own mind as well as the minds of others. Through self-trust you gain the gift of yourself.

By self-trust we mean having an intimate feel for the person you are and the way your mind works. Imagine visiting the country of You and becoming comfortable with its language, its customs and idiosyncrasies, the contours of its landscapes, its unique history. Imagine discovering what it’s like to be you, how it feels to be in your skin, to think your thoughts, to possess your memories, to be shaped by your stories, to be driven by your obsessions, to be happy or unhappy as only you are, to perceive yourself and others as only you do. Self-trust begins with an honest exploration of your thoughts and feelings, which are as close to you as the food you eat and the air you breathe.

Sadly, many people are too fearful, anxious, or rushed for such intimate self-exploration. They feel disconnected from their subjective experience. This condition leaves them in a state not of self-trust but of self-doubt. In fact, it was an agonizing state of self-doubt—a feeling of being completely cut off from her own inner life—that more than twenty-five years ago led Linda to create Proprioceptive Writing. How It All Started: Linda’s Story

If necessity is the mother of invention, it was need that forced me to invent Proprioceptive Writing. Soon after my mother died, when I was seven, I had started feeling as if I were locked inside myself and couldn’t get out, or locked outside and couldn’t get in. Psychologically, I was suffering from what I now call proprioceptive deficit, a breakdown in communication between a person and his or her subjective thoughts. By some strange act of compartmentalization, I kept my private thoughts secret from myself and so felt cut off from them. Most days, this condition was my prison.

A year after he was widowed, my father remarried. The tension among my father, stepmother, older sister, and myself seemed to me an unchanging aspect of life, like a gloomy weather system that blows in and won’t blow out. During certain moments, however, I would feel a brief reprieve.

Before I fell asleep some nights, I entered a state of mind that compensated for all my daytime hardship and taught me how to live with it. As I lay in bed, reviewing the past day or planning new escapes, something clicked inside my head that altered my perspective on myself in a startling way. With my inner eye I pictured my thoughts; with my inner ear I heard myself speaking them, and suddenly I knew myself as a thinker thinking. “I think, therefore I am,” as Descartes famously said. This spontaneous awareness brought with it a feeling of harmony and love. Contentment washed over me at those times.

Everyone has experiences of heightened consciousness; they come unbidden. Mine taught me two of life’s great lessons: that as thinker I had power, and that the thinking process could be my pleasure. But this pleasure was mercurial. It came and went. Sometimes I’d lie awake for hours, waiting for that special feeling to kick in, and nothing would happen.

The first time I became aware of how cut off I was from myself I was eleven, and all the other kids at summer camp were writing in journals. “Dear Diary,” my friend Karen wrote blithely, lying on her belly in the bunk bed below and kicking her legs in the air. “Today we went on a hard hike up Mount Kildare and Andy kissed me but no one saw us. He’s the best boy in the group. Maybe I love him. I’m not saying yes.” I hung over the side of our double-decker, watching Karen write, and felt a stab of emptiness. Not three feet from me, she was lost in her imagination. Some kids gave their diaries names, like Louisa or Amy or Rebecca, but we all knew that when you wrote in a diary you were your own audience. Who was this alter ego to whom Karen spoke her thoughts for the pleasure of it? I hadn’t a clue how to have the kind of imaginative presence to myself that my friend had that day.

Years later, when I was a college student writing papers, a moment sometimes came (rarely, but remarkably) when my thoughts absorbed me totally, and I felt engaged, both emotionally and intellectually. A warmth suffused me in that instant. I felt that universal love and personal well-being I had known as a young girl thinking in my bed. But more usually my mind felt impenetrable to me. I wanted to reflect on my thinking, carefully and deeply, but writing with the purpose of self-discovery was an alien concept then. We were encouraged to analyze, that was all. However competently I could dissect a writer’s thoughts, I could not narrate my own.

How could I free my mind and become available to what actually interested me? How could I recognize desire, move on impulse, develop will? How could I exert myself on my behalf? How could I be less afraid of difficulty and choose the thing that was harder but more personally rewarding for me? Where to begin? The answers came during the summer of 1976, when the doors to my consciousness opened and the distinction between inside and outside dissolved.

I’d been teaching English literature at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for six years and needed to write my Ph.D. dissertation to stay on a tenure track. While I was looking through my card file of authors on whom I wanted to do research, I came across a book that had struck me as extraordinary when I’d read it several years earlier. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a short novel by Shirley Jackson, best known as the author of “The Lottery,” a short story originally published in The New Yorker in 1948 and frequently anthologized since then. The book is a psychological portrait of a young girl named Mary Katherine in mid-twentieth-century New England, a brilliant depiction of female terror and subverted aggression, but also a spoof of a traditional whodunit. In this case, Mary Katherine had done what many young girls only fantasize about: laced sugar with cyanide and eliminated mother, father, an annoying younger brother, and a useless aunt, all in the time it takes to drink your after-dinner coffee. Thereafter, she remains in the decaying family estate, behind tall wrought-iron gates, along with her adored older sister. With nothing more to do than light dusting once a week, she has all the time in the world to dwell on her thoughts.

Reading the book over again brought back the sound of Mary Katherine’s voice, which had struck me when I first read it and stayed with me over the years. The novel is written entirely as Mary Katherine’s internal dramatic monologue. Throughout the book she is holding a silent, one-way conversation with her chief admirer: herself. To this self she speaks her thoughts in the order that they come to her, making side remarks for her amusement, rehearsing insults she’ll deliver, loving whom she loves, hating whom she hates, recalling as if for the first time what she’s said a thousand times before. No one notices her deceptions or self-delusions—except, of course, the reader. She’s safe in her seclusion, free to travel where her thoughts take her, obsessing to her heart’s content.

This thinking voice sounded amazingly alive to me. Jackson had found a narrative voice—it was the sound of a voice thinking. I repeated the phrase to myself; it was like a koan or a riddle. Back then I felt so cut off from myself that I’d forgotten the connection between silent inner thought and spoken thought that every child takes for granted and that Jackson had captured so deftly. There was something here I needed to understand. My goal, my obsession that summer, was to learn how Jackson made that connection and captured that sound for her narrative voice. It didn’t occur to me at the time that I might find my own thinking voice in the process.

It was early June when I lit a candle and flipped on a tape of Bach cantatas—just an inspiration to support the morning’s work. I opened the novel and began to read Mary Katherine’s “uncensored” thought. Her voice came in loud and clear. Taking my cue from her, I wrote down my every thought, without letup. I interacted with Mary Katherine, reacted to her, advocated for her, and, in my fashion, imitated her as well. When my thoughts wandered away from Jackson’s text to my life or emotions, I wandered with them. Without a reason to edit my thoughts, I elaborated on them all, exploring in a leisurely fashion every psychological event aroused in my mind by my sense of the words I was using. Three hours later I awakened to the room I was in and looked around. I turned off the music and blew out the candle. I felt uncommon calm. I had lost myself in time, but never had I felt as much myself. Something wonderful was happening to me and it took place through this writing: I was writing solely for myself while addressing a listener who shared the same sense of the subject as I did. For the first time in my life I was following my thoughts wherever they led me, no matter what the terrain. I was entering into my own life by exploring my own thought flow.

Important, Original, Practical Life-Enhancement
By Jane Augustine
Writing the Mind Alive: the Proprioceptive Method for Finding Your Authentic Voice is an important, original book. It delivers what its title promises. Proprioceptive writing is an utterly simple, practical method for gaining "insight into and power over the way we live and think," as the authors say. It has developed through twenty-five years of experience based on Linda Metcalf's re-discovery, during a long writing retreat, of the natural, innate, unceasing energy of human thinking. It is an obvious but often unrecognized truth and the ground of the ancient admonition: "Know yourself." Everyone can think, so no extra or special skills are needed to apply this method of knowing yourself. There are no tricks or gimmicks or foggy spirituality to it. Anyone who can read and hold a pen can apply it. In it one writes down one's thoughts as "heard" in the mind and interrogates them through the Proprioceptive Question "What do I mean by ________ ?" Unpacking the word that fills the blank brings revelatory results. I write this review as the testimonial of an ordinary person, like (and unlike) everyone else, a job-holder, spouse, parent, colleague, friend, self-questioner and juggler of all those roles, sometimes quite unsuccessfully. Though I'd been acquainted with the method for some time, I hadn't practiced it. Since this book brought it clearly into print, underlining its relevant history and well-tested principles, I've been doing a daily "Write." It helped immediately. It brought more professional focus, less interior Sturm und Drang-- certainly a mind more alive and a life more enjoyed hour by hour. Whatever your age, sex, occupation or pre-occupation, you should buy this book and try the method for yourself. It's a practical life-enhancement.

Short on substance, long on touchy feely
By A Customer
The basic concept of proprioceptive writing seems solid and useful to individuals seeking insight to their motivation and behavior. However, this book was disappointing in that it took until page 32 to get to the meat of the matter. Long introductory chapters seemed endless and were repetitive, redundant and boring (such as the author's backstory). Perhaps because the useful concept is such a simple and straight forward tool, the editors felt compelled to encouraged the authors to pad the product to make it "book worthy." In which case, the padding was added to the wrong places.
