Omerta, by Mario Puzo

To Don Raymonde Aprile's children he was a loyal family member, their father's adopted "nephew." To the FBI he was a man who would rather ride his horses than do Mob business. No one knew why Aprile, the last great American Don, had adopted Astorre Viola many years before in Sicily; no one suspected how he had carefully trained him . . . and how, while the Don's children claimed respectable careers in America, Astorre Viola waited for his time to come.

Now his time has arrived. The Don is dead, his murder one bloody act in a drama of ambition and deceit--from the deadly compromises made by an FBI agent to the greed of two crooked NYPD detectives and the frightening plans of a South American mob kingpin. In a collision of enemies and lovers, betrayers and loyal soldiers, Astorre Viola will claim his destiny. Because after all these years, this moment is in his blood. . . .

Amazon.com Review
Omerta, the third novel in Mario Puzo's Mafia trilogy, is infinitely better than the third Godfather film, and most movies in fact. Besides colorful characters and snappy dialogue, it's got a knotty, gratifying, just-complex-enough plot and plenty of movie-like scenes. The newly retired Mafioso Don Raymonde Aprile attends his grandson's confirmation at St. Patrick's in New York, handing each kid a gold coin. Long shot: "Brilliant sunshine etched the image of that great cathedral into the streets around it." Medium shot: "The girls in frail cobwebby white lace dresses, the boys [with] traditional red neckties knitted at their throats to ward off the Devil." Close-up: "The first bullet hit the Don square in the forehead. The second bullet tore out his throat."

More crucial than the tersely described violence is the emotional setting: a traditional, loving clan menaced by traditional vendettas. With Don Aprile hit, the family's fate lies in the strong hands of his adopted nephew from Sicily, Astorre. The Don kept his own kids sheltered from the Mafia: one son is an army officer; another is a TV exec; his daughter Nicole (the most developed character of the three) is an ace lawyer who liked to debate the Don on the death penalty. "Mercy is a vice, a pretension to powers we do not have ... an unpardonable offense to the victim," the Don maintained. Astorre, a macaroni importer and affable amateur singer, was secretly trained to carry on the Don's work. Now his job is to show no mercy.

But who did the hit? Was it Kurt Cilke, the morally tormented FBI man who recently jailed most of the Mafia bosses? Or Timmona Portella, the Mob boss Cilke still wants to collar? How about Marriano Rubio, the womanizing, epicurean Peruvian diplomat who wants Nicole in bed--did he also want her papa's head?

If you didn't know Puzo wrote Omerta, it would be no mystery. His marks are all over it: lean prose, a romance with the Old Country, a taste for olives in barrels, a jaunty cynicism ("You cannot send six billionaires to prison," says Cilke's boss. "Not in a democracy"), an affection for characters with flawed hearts, like Rudolfo the $1,500-an-hour sexual massage therapist, or his short-tempered client Aspinella, the one-eyed NYPD detective. The simultaneous courtship of cheery Mafia tramp Rosie by identical hit-man twins Frankie and Stace Sturzo makes you fall in love with them all--and feel a genuine pang when blood proves thicker than eros.

This fitting capstone to Puzo's career is optioned for a film, and Michael Imperioli of TV's The Sopranos narrates the audiocassette version of the novel. But why wait for the movie? Omerta is a big, old-fashioned movie in its own right. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
"The dead have no friends," says one gangster to another in Puzo's final novel, as they plot to kill America's top Mafioso. But Puzo, despite his death last year at age 78, should gain many new friends for this operatic thriller, his most absorbing since The Sicilian. The slain mobster is the elderly Don Raymonde Aprile. His heirs, around whom the violent, vastly emotional narrative swirls, are his three children and one nephew. It's the nephew, Astorre Viola, who inherits the Don's legacy and transforms before his cousins' astonished eyes from a foppish playboy into a Man of Honor, as he avenges the Don's death and protects his family from those hungry for its prime possession: banks that will earn legitimate billions in the years ahead. Astorre's change is no surprise to the few aged mobsters who know that, as a youth, he was trained to be a Qualified Man, or to the fewer still who knowDas Astorre does notDthat his real father was a great Sicilian Mafioso. Arrayed against Astorre in his pursuit of cruel justice are some of the sharpest Puzo characters ever, among them a corrupt and beautiful black New York policewoman; assassin twins; wiseguys galore, including a drug lord who seeks his own nuclear weapon; and, drawn in impressive shades of gray, a veteran FBI agent who imperils his family and his soul to destroy Astorre. Despite its familiar subject matter, the novelDwhich shuttles among Sicily, England and AmericaDis unpredictable and bracing, but its greatest strength is Puzo's voice, ripe with age and wisdom, as attentive to the scent of lemons and oranges in a Sicilian garden as to a good man's sudden, bloody death. This is pulp raised to art and a worthy memorial to the author, who one last time makes readers an offer they can't refuse. 500,000 first printing; simultaneous Random House audio and large print editions; to be a film from Miramax. From Library Journal
Puzo was a storyteller to the end, spending the last three years of his life writing Omerta, which in Sicilian means "honor." The final installment of Puzo's mob-related tales (following The Godfather and The Last Don), this fast-paced story is one of honor kept and broken, of Old World values and contemporary New World business/political ethos. When retired New York Mafia Don Aprile is assassinated on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral, the FBI, local detectives, rival families, and even his grown children are suspected. It falls on Aprile's adopted nephew Astorre to find the killers and see that "justice" is served. Astorre, who has been running a macaroni import company and has a passion for singing, must decide if and how to avenge the don's death and bring honor and security back to the family, which is on the brink of legitimacy. In his other novels, Puzo explored the moral unraveling of his key characters, and he does so again with the charismatic Astorre, a character with many contradictions and surprises. Omerta is written nearly as sparsely as a screenplay. It's as if Puzo knew he wouldn't be around to do that job also, as he did with The Godfather (winning an Academy Award in the process). Highly recommended.

The last but not the best
By J. Thomas Dyess
This last book of Puzo was as many trilogies go, not as good as the first, and not as good as the second. The Godfather and The Last Don were very good reads - very capturing and political, but this one seemed to just go through the motions. If you liked the first two books, definately get this one, it's the last one you'll read from Puzo, but don't expect a bedazzeling Godfather. It's a good book none the less.

Homage to the Godfathers
By H. Berlowitz
Omerta is an interesting fast read, provocative, and lively with surprise twists and turns. The main character Astorre is a complex character who is full of surprises. The beginning and middle of the book is very good, but the ending is a bit hurried and contrived. It will make an interesting movie and will pay homage to the late Mario Puzo.

Awful Letdown.
By A Customer
Maybe the realism of the Sopranos coupled with the actual decline of the mafia makes this book seem so very unimportant. The writing itself is pitched at the average fourth grader and Puzo is the master of using the trite expression. The world view put forth is that everyone but everyone is crooked on this planet so by the time you put the book down you are exhausted with the duplicity. Frankly, if you MUST read this book either go to the library or wait for the paperback.

When he sits around the house, He sits AROUND the house
By Ross Noir
I read this book a few hundred times being one of the only entertaining books in my grandmothers old study and my intro to Garfield. I was surprised how much I remembered after not reading for 15 years or so.

Love it, while some of the frames are awfully timely some really do have a timeless quality.

Garfield No.2
By Shaun Dynes
I remember the first time I read this book 10 and 1/2 years ago. It is true 'classic' Garfield at his best. This is a must for any hardcore Garfield fan. New fans of Garfield will probably like this book, even though Garfield looks a lot of different as compared to his 'modern' look. I guess that goes to show how much Garfield has evolved in his 21 years, without losing his witty and sarcastic humor. If you do not have this book, then what are waiting for, buy it now! :)

My 13 year old son loves this book! I have been a big fan of Garfield since I was a kid! I was so happy that I could find this original comic book from when I was a kid to add to my son's collection.

Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams: The Story of Black Hollywood, by Donald Bogle

In Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams, Donald Bogle tells–for the first time–the story of a place both mythic and real: Black Hollywood. Spanning sixty years, this deliciously entertaining history uncovers the audacious manner in which many blacks made a place for themselves in an industry that originally had no place for them.

Through interviews and the personal recollections of Hollywood luminaries, Bogle pieces together a remarkable history that remains largely obscure to this day. We discover that Black Hollywood was a place distinct from the studio-system-dominated Tinseltown–a world unto itself, with unique rules and social hierarchy. It had its own talent scouts and media, its own watering holes, elegant hotels, and fashionable nightspots, and of course its own glamorous and brilliant personalities.

Along with famous actors including Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Hattie McDaniel (whose home was among Hollywood’s most exquisite), and, later, the stunningly beautiful Lena Horne and the fabulously gifted Sammy Davis, Jr., we meet the likes of heartthrob James Edwards, whose promising career was derailed by whispers of an affair with Lana Turner, and the mysterious Madame Sul-Te-Wan, who shared a close lifelong friendship with pioneering director D. W. Griffith. But Bogle also looks at other members of the black community–from the white stars’ black servants, who had their own money and prestige, to gossip columnists, hairstylists, and architects–and at the world that grew up around them along Central Avenue, the Harlem of the West.

In the tradition of Hortense Powdermaker’s classic Hollywood: The Dream Factory and Neal Gabler’s An Empire of Their Own, in Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams, Donald Bogle re-creates a vanished world that left an indelible mark on Hollywood–and on all of America.

Great book. Fills in the blanks for me regarding Black Hollywood heritage
By Desert Rose
I'm a black woman with a lifelong fascination with Hollywood, but who had next to no knowledge about the contributions of African-Americans to the field. During the early 90s, I had taken university level film courses, and I even earned a communications degree, but never once during that time did any of my profs ever discuss the contributions of Black people to the motion picture industry...except for Spike Lee and even at that time he was blown off by some as an "upstart."

Well, thank heavens for Donald Bogle for partially "completing my education" in this subject with this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams. I learned a lot that I hadn't known before, and had many urban legends and myths dispelled in the process.

For example, all my life I've had immediate knee jerk reactions to the movies Birth Of A Nation, Gone With The Wind and Imitation Of Life because of negative reations from my mother and other people. They would just say "it's demeaning" but never go into the reasons why they felt that way...they'd just change the subject.

While I will probably never warm to any of those three flicks, at least Mr. Bogle's book has helped me to understand why none of those movies or black actors in them can be dismissed out of hand, and how each motion picture in its own way spurred black people to get out there and find their own voice in Hollywood.

It has certainly inspired me to get out there, learn more, find and watch those "race" movies. I've discovered my local library has a lot of them both silent and "talkies", and quite a few are available for purchase online. In the past few weeks, I've watched two Oscar Micheaux movies, and I finally saw St Louis Blues (1929) in its entirety with Bessie Smith. I also discovered the "soundies" from the 1940s, those were the percursers to MTV...

Beause of Mr. Bogle's book, I am making plans to further my self-education on Black Hollywood history by collecting these films, visiting the graves of several black Hollywood pioneers when I visit Los Angeles next spring...and I will also go see and photograph their stars on the Walk of Fame, too. My mission? To make sure their contributions are NEVER forgotten, nor blown off by uninformed snarks who don't remember anything prior to the 1980s 'hip-hop' culture. Why is this so important? Because when you think of it, if there were no Birth Of A Nation, there may not have been an Oscar Micheaux...and perhaps no Spike Lee! If there was no "Gone With The Wind", then maybe we'd still be waiting for a black woman to win an Oscar...or not...one can never tell.

The only real complaint I have about the book? I wish there had been more pictures included! Otherwise, I think it is a real winner overall...and I recommend it for any person of color who is a serious student of theatre or film.

It Will Change The Way You View Hollywood Film
By Kevin Killian
I feel like I had never really seen a Hollywood picture before, now that I have read Donald Bogle's marvelous study of black life in Hollywood on and off screen. The other day for example I saw a inconsequential Fox comedy of the 1950s written by Nunnally Johnson, Oh Men, Oh Women, and in it a spoiled white heiress played by Barbara Rush refuses to exit a New York cab until the driver finds her the correct change. For the moment, the focus of the film is on the hassled driver, who has to contend with Miss Rush's airs, and also with the honks and screams of a dzoen other cabs jammed up behind him. Finally he lets her out for free and he absorbs the cost of his mistake. I didn't recognize the actor who played (briefly) the cabbie, then I waited for the credits. It was Joel Fluellen. A name which would have meant nothing to me, if I hadn't just finished reading Bogle. Joel Fluellen! The forgotten man of the movies dead, alas, too soon, and way before he could reveal his true sexuality.

This performance, brief as it was, is totally calibrated and brings an energy into a movie which sadly needs some! In a way this scene might be an allegory for Bogle's thesis, which is that, even if they were given insulting little to do, African American actors did it stunningly well and the shame of it is how very few of them managed to catch a break all the way to stardom. A few of them did: Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Sidney Poitier. Because the book basically breaks off circa 1960, we don't get to hear later success stories such as Will Smith or Denzel Washington. This book is all about forebears.

A few nights later I watched a picture of an earlier vintage, CRASH DIVE with Tyrone Power. Oddly for its time, the movie gives a fair amount of screen time to a black actor calkled Ben Carter. If you read BBBD, you will find out Carter's whole story, the way he parlayed his limited experience as a theatrical agent into representing some of Hollywood's biggest black names--and often enough stealing their parts from them, because he'd nab the script and secure the part first if he thought it worth his time!

If you've got one film book to read this year make it Donald Bogle. You'll find it an amazing intervention into a quickly disappearing history.

Megastar of stage, screen, and television, Geneva Jordan now has a command performance in Minnesota, where she agrees to look after her thirteen-year-old nephew, a boy with Down’s syndrome, while his parents take a long-overdue vacation. Though Geneva and her sister, Ann, are as different as night and day (“I being night, of course, dark and dramatic”), Geneva remembers she had a family before she had a star on her door. But so accustomed is she to playing the lead, finding herself a supporting actress in someone else’s life is strange and unexplored territory. Then the discovery of an old scrapbook that she and her sister created long ago starts her thinking of things beyond fame. For The Great Mysterious is a collection of thoughts and feelings dedicated to answering life’s big questions—far outside the spotlight’s glow. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
From the popular author of Patty Jane's House of Curl and The Tall Pine Polka comes a funny, heartwarming novel in which the voice of the self-absorbed Broadway diva Geneva Jordan holds ingratiating charm. It's not Geneva's singing voice that's the magic here, however, but her plainspoken storytelling. At age 48, Geneva is called upon by her twin sister, Ann, to come to her hometown of Deep Lake, Minn., and baby-sit Rich, Ann's 13-year-old son, afflicted with Down's Syndrome. Ann and her husband, Riley, desperately need a vacation, the first one since Rich's birth, so Geneva reluctantly agrees to leave her glamorous life in New York City to care for her nephew for a month. Geneva slips into the role of parental figure with a few minor snags, and she and Rich bond over a box of old toys, where Geneva uncovers a scrapbook she and Ann made as children. Titled The Great Mysterious, the book asks such existential questions as "What is true love?" and "What is the meaning of life?" to which each family member wrote an answer. This diversion motivates Geneva's metamorphosis. Reading the words of her grandmother and parents, she begins to feel the ache of having given up family for her career. Still reeling from a "doublehitterA-heartbreak and menopause" (she had broken up with her Broadway co-star), Geneva forges a special friendship with James, Deep Lake's wise mailman. She does, however, return to New York, where she considers marriage proposals until tragedy strikes a dear friend, forcing her yet again to reevaluate what's important in life. While the plot extends few surprises, Landvik's unpretentious story admirably captures the ups and downs of a small town from the humorous perspective of a big-city star. Agent, Betsy Nolan. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
Although she's a Broadway star, self-centered Geneva Jordan has butterflies in her stomach when she (grudgingly) travels to Minnesota to take care of her 13-year-old nephew, Rich, who has Down's syndrome, while her sister and brother-in-law take a month-long vacation in Italy. In addition to being inherently selfish, Geneva is also coping with fast-approaching menopause and a devastating breakup with her costar, Trevor. But staying with Rich proves surprisingly rewarding, especially after they discover a scrapbook Geneva and her sister put together as children, which forces her to confront life, death, and happiness. Of course, it doesn't hurt that she meets James, a concert pianist with a bad case of stage fright (now working as a mailman, much to the shame of his ex-wife). When Geneva returns to New York and her old life, Trevor's reappearance (with an enormous diamond ring) forces her to choose between the two men. It's a no-brainer, yet Landvik's fourth novel is sadly predictable and flat, completely lacking the vigor, delightful characters, and goofy plot that endeared readers (including this reviewer) to her third novel, The Tall Pine Polka (LJ 7/99). Purchase only to meet demand.

A bit different Lorna Landvik
By Nancy Kaye
This isn't "Patty Jane's House of Curl" or "Tall Pine Polka" but it is an ejoyable read. It was the books premise which made me want to read "The Great Mysterious." A very popular, very busy diva on Broadway is reaching middle age, approaching menopause, and recently having been dumped by her boyfriend who has decided he needs a younger woman on his arm, is asked by her sister to babysit for her nephew who has Down Syndrome in a small town in Minnesota. She decides this might be just the thing for her at a time when she feels the need to "get away" and to slow down. Along the way, she finds out what is really important in life with the help of an old notebook she finds......The Great Mysterious. Somewhat predictable, a bit of a romance novel feel to it, but well worth it.

As a parent of a child with Down Syndrome...
By A Customer
I liked this book. I've been on a quest to read fiction related to Down Syndrome and have found a wide range of books, some of which I liked, others that I did not.
Geneva is the main character who (unwillingly) takes on the role of caregiver for 13 y.o nephew Rich, when his parents take a month long trip. As the parent of a child with Down Syndrome, I started the book with the usual misgivings that Rich, the central character who has Down Syndrome, might be cast in a stereotypical, outdated manner. However, I'm pleased to say that the author has obviously done her research and was able to capture the character of Rich in way that was not only accurate and appropriate, but warm, compassionate, realistic, with all the subtle nuances that make up an individual. For Rich is truly an indivudual, and much more than the Down Syndrome which defines him in Geneva's eyes before she gets to know him.
I thought the author also handled Geneva's self-doubt and mental struggles with how she felt about Rich in a sensitive and realistic manner. While some of these questions were not "pretty" and forced Geneva to delve in to some parts of her personality that were not so attractive, I truly believe that these things need to be talked about...it's only by recognizing that we are all human and all have a need to grow and learn that we can actually do so.
I recommend this book to any adult looking for a good summer read. And don't be afraid to ask yourself some of the hard questions that Geneva asked herself - the world will be a better place if everyone did so.

Just what I needed
By A Customer
The thing about Lorna Landvik's writing, is that it's not necessarily GREAT literature... but when I read it, I get done and think, that's just what I needed. Her characters become like friends, and the sometimes soap operatic plots are like the soap operas of everyday life. Welcome to the Great Mysterious has this great friendship at its core.... Conrad and Rich's. Their simple love of each other is enviable. It's what holds this book together. Landvik writes about the great mysteries of life - love, death, friendship, family, snow on Halloween... that make me look at my life a tiny bit differently...With a little more awe at all that is there.

Mario Puzo won international acclaim for The Godfather and his other Mafia novels. But before creating those masterpieces, Puzo wrote his first acclaimed novel The Dark Arena–an astounding story of a war-scarred young American in a battle against corruption and betrayal. . . .

So he returns to Germany to find the woman he had once loved–and to start some kind of life in a vanquished country. Now he enters a different kind of war, one in which he must make a fateful decision–between love and ambition, passion and greed, life and death. . . .

Ahead of its time
By R. L. MILLER
Back in the days when Elvis was suffering the "Hup-two-three-four Occupation GI Blues" and Bing wondered what you did with a general when he stops being a general, an obscure author who would later become the definitive writer of Mob fiction painted us a stark picture of postwar military occupation life. A decade later, on the threshold of the Peace Now era, Joseph Heller would give us "Catch 22", a story of a bomber crewman and his ongoing identity crisis. John Farris' "Glover" was the story of a tough-guy soldier at play in the English countryside. Evan Hunter's "Sons" dealt in part with the issue of bomber crewman and locals in WW II Italy. See the contrast? It was no biggie to be candid during the 'Sixties era about the tendency of occupation soldiers to treat their unwilling hosts as less than people--Gwynne Dyer once said that the only foolproof way of turning a civilian into a fighting man is to include some form of suggestion that the enemy aren't people in his training. But back in the early 'Fifties when this book was written, popular fiction hardly ever approached the issue of American occupation of a defeated enemy from any side but that of the Pentagon. In this story, GI Walter Mosca gets involved in a local shackup arrangement in Germany at the end of WW II, comes home to find that he can no longer relate to the Girl He Left Behind, so he returns to Germany as a civilian employee to seek out the girl he hadn't realized he was falling for. Her effect on him causes him to be a lot more analytical of his own behavior towards the locals in general, that of his colleagues as well--but more than that, it also gives him a view of the perspective of the people he's there to help "keep in line". All sorts of things can happen to a person's worldview when he becomes romantically involved outside his native culture. I have no actual details on which to base this, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the late Mario Puzo drew on his own experiences in service during WW II as source material. He wouldn't be the first.

Pretty good for a young writer!
By G. Shkodra
This is the very first novel the young Mario Puzo wrote during the fifties and he certainly pulled it off. It's not so difficult to notice already the strokes of the unknown, aspiring writer who'd later become undoubtfully one of the best of his generation.

There are many similarities between this novel and some of those of the lost generation writers, the most similar to it being, of course, "A farewell to arms" by Ernest Hemingway. The 20-th century best american writer used to write about people and events taking place during the war, whether it was WW1 or WW2, while Puzo's work is more about war's aftermath and how it affected and changed people's life.

The novel's main character is not as sympathetic or attracting as, let's say, Hemingway's Frederic Henry or Remarque's Gottfried Lenz. I found it somewhat difficult to sympathize with Mosca's slovenly attitude, his lack of feelings or interest in anything or anyone surrounding him, but I understand him, or at least I try to: he slowly understands that his persona has changed, and not for the better, and that he has become the enemy, as he puts it towards the end of the novel; he loves someone (in his own way), but he doesn't know it; his loved one first loses his first child and later gives birth to his second one, but he doesn't seem to care. I think it's interesting to compare Puzo's work to some of Hemingway's novels: while hell to Hemingway was war itself, to Puzo "hell is the suffering of being unable to love!", as the great Dostoyevski puts it in "The brothers Karamazov". And Mosca is unable to love and care about someone or something.

While Hemingway would go on and write mostly about war, fatalism and despair, Puzo would later change his subjects and describe the american corrupt worlds of politics, underworld, the casinos and the movie industry. Later on, his main motto would be to prove that "the secret of a big fortune with no apparent cause is a forgotten crime".

The River Where Blood Is Born (Ballantine Reader's Circle), by Sandra Jackson-Opoku

This astonishing novel takes us on a journey along the river of one family's history, carving a course across two centuries and three continents, from ancient Africa into today's America. Here, through the lives of Mother Africa's many daughters, we come to understand the real meaning of roots: the captive Proud Mary, who has been savagely punished for refusing to relinquish her child to slavery; Earlene, who witnesses her father's murder at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan; Big Momma, a modern-day matriarch who can make a woman of a girl; proud and sassy Cinnamon Brown, whose wild abandon hides a bitter loss; and smart, ambitious Alma, who is torn between the love of a man and the song of her soul.

In The River Where Blood Is Born, the seen and unseen worlds are seamlessly joined--the spirit realms where the great river goddess and ancestor mothers watch over the lives of their descendants, both the living and those not yet born. Stringing beads of destiny, they work to lead one daughter back to her source. But what must Alma sacrifice to honor the River Mother's call?

Amazon.com Review
Stitched together like a quilt or a piece of Kente cloth, this novel recasts the black experience as myth, encompassing both the world of the spirits and the world of ordinary human endeavors. It opens with the story of how Ananse the spider entered the villages of women ancestor spirits and learned the stories of Africa's daughters. The tale that drives the novel is of two women who are made to leave their village with their children. Ama, the daughter of one of the women, bears a child with the son of the other, and is then sold into slavery. The novel--told in diaries and journals, letters, and more conventional narrative forms--follows Ama's descendants in their wanderings throughout the New World and finally back to Africa.

From Library Journal
First novelist Jackson-Opoku "focuses on strong female characters as they journey through poverty and family conflicts to seek love, fulfillment, justice, and, ultimately, peace" in this part folktale/spiritual/modern romance.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
An ambitious, often lyrical, but narratively sclerotic first novel that attempts, within a folkloric structure, to tell the story of the African diaspora as experienced by one family over two centuries on three continents. While the ancestors gathered around the Queen Mother in the afterword comment and sometimes intervene, Ananse, the mythic spider and weaver of tales, traces the lives of a series of extraordinary black women. The complex, many-voiced narrative is an imaginative--but increasingly obtrusive--device that serves to slow an already sluggish novel. River is more a series of set-pieces- -learning about life by quilting, unsatisfactory (but graphically detailed) love affairs, lengthy descriptions of struggle and exile- -than the cohesive tale of generations of black women defying the degradation of slavery and racism that it was seemingly meant to be. The story begins near a river in West Africa, the ``river where blood is born,'' as Kwesi and Ama are separated and sold into slavery. Ama, called Proud Mary, has her tongue slit when she refuses to give up her baby girl to the white woman who takes the baby and rears it on her Caribbean plantation. Ama's child is later raped by her adopted father Gareth Winston; as the years pass, her descendants move out of the islands up to Chicago, London, and Montreal. Among the descendants are Bohemma, the wise quilter; Lola, a bar owner who tries and fails to live her life without becoming a mother; and Alma, her sexually frigid daughter, whose affair with Trevor, a married man, dominates her life until she goes to Africa. There, she finds the ``African identity'' she'd been searching for and, in giving birth to a baby near the river of the title, ends her family's long wandering. A potentially powerful story lost in verbiage and inaction. (Book-of-the-Month Club/Quality Paperback Book Club alternate selection; author tour) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Totally absorbing
By titilayo
I borrowed this book from a friend and didn't want to return it. It was terrific! It traces the history of nine generations of women from Africa, to the Caribbean, to America and back to Africa again. The characters are vividly portrayed and believable. The story is readable and the connections between the female characters are fascinating. African folklore and myth are incorporated into the book in a fascinating and relevant manner. My only gripe is a minor one -- some of the women's story lines weren't as fully developed as I would have liked. But that did not in anyway detract from the power of the narrative.

Intense storytelling! You need to pay attention to keep up, there are lots of characters and lineage to follow. It's worth it! Entertaining! Enlightening! I read it three months ago and I intend to take it on the plane as I leave the country (long flight) ...and read it again. Slower...to digest more fully, what my heart/soul starved for. The finest novel I've read in years
By A Customer
It's a women's thing, it's an African-American thing, and this nice Jewish boy couIdn't put it down. The novel may favorable be compared with the works of Toni Morrison and Chinua Achebe, yet has its own wonderful voice. I work in a bookstore, managing the fiction dep't. I watch a lot of stuff go by, read some of it, and I haven't seen anything as good as The River Where Blood is Born in years. As soon as I read it, I told our buyers' office to order plenty, because I could easily sell it to customers. I pledged to sell 100 in six months, which would put it in NYT bestseller range for our store. I've sold 75 in five weeks and have no intention of slowing down. Our customers love it. This novel is what fiction is supposed to be: engaging, thought-provoking, and wise: the sort of book one can't help but finish as soon as possible. The author clearly put her heart and soul into it. I am usually annoyed by novels with too many narrators, but this worked perfectly for me. Each one was convincing and distinct from the previous one. Fiction should be about something important while entertaining the reader. This novel succeeds wildly on both accounts. It explores identity, it doesn't lend itself to easy answers and yet it tells interesting, funny, raunchy, frightening and beautiful stories with seemingly perfect ease. The author spent twenty-one years perfecting this book, and it shows on every page.

Great! But be warned, the script is NOT in the US version!
By litemakr
Fantastic, beautiful book. Full of gorgeous artwork and pictures. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because for some inexplicable reason, the script is NOT included in the US version. However, the complete illustrated script IS included in the UK version, which I bought from Amazon.co.uk. I can't imagine why this was done, it is a real disservice to the US market. I highly recommend getting the UK version even though it will cost a bit more than the US version.

The Force Is Strong In This Book
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:25183791]]Putting this book down is difficult after you flip through a few pages. There are hundreds of pieces of conceptual art and beautiful paintings. It is apparent right from the start that George Lucas only hire the best artists for his movie.

The art genre is science fiction. You'll see a lot of concept art on cityscape, robots, planets, costumes, creatures, architecture, props and characters relating to the Star Wars movie. This book is all about art, you won't see any movie stills.

There are two versions of the book. The one with the movie script has 272 pages. The one I'm holding has only 224 pages.

Design concepts are explained for the characters and set. There's not much text but enough. The level of detail, effort and creativity displayed by the artists is simply marveling. This genre is really a playground for artists to explore with their imagination.

For Star Wars fans, there's no reason not to get this book. For artbook lovers, especially those who like sci-fi, this book should be on your shopping list also.

The Pick of the Star Wars Books
By neoninfusion
I own the "Art of" ... Episode I and Episode II, so the "Art of Episode III" was a must purchase for me. These three books are very classy, being the pick of the Star Wars books for those who have an interest in how the movies develop through sketches and storyboards, hence the 'art' of Star Wars. While the art-books for the first two movies focused heavily on characters, the Art of Episode III focuses particularly on the worlds created for the movie, presumably as most characters have already been seen.

I'm not interested in art, so I don't have a bias toward this type of product. I'm a Star Wars fan first and foremost. The art work is, however, of a high quality and shows diagrams, paintings, drawings and sketches of the characters, planet locations, vehicles and weapons - everything that was designed by Lucas' own art team for the movie. The book (this time) is arranged in chronological order, taking place over a period of two years where the author documented the development of the movie from preproduction to principal photography to digital shot creation. The author, Rinzler, was allowed to work with the artists and therefore had first-hand experience with Lucas and the team. Typically, the art team generate their own designs which are bounced off Lucas and then manipulated to his satisfaction. This is all documented with discussions with the artists themselves and Lucas as to why something is kept and another discarded.

Not only do you find the items that made the final cut of the movies but concepts that didn't make the big screen. I don't want to give anything away about Episode III, so an example from the 'Art of Episode II' is the exciting concept of the Sith villain. Count Dooku was the eventual villain chosen by Lucas (reportedly due to Dooku's regal manner) but the character found in some alternative Star Wars literature called Asajj Ventress (the female dark jedi with the black and white martial arts appearance who carries two curved lightsabres) has a series of sketches and paintings attributed to her. So we see Lucas doesn't omit any ideas from his designers, and uses them in various side projects. It is fascinating seeing these characters etc pop-up in various side projects.

Overall, all Star Wars fans should have the "Art of ..." books. They provide a classy addition to the bookshelf and provide hours of intriguing reading and dreaming of a galaxy far, far away.

* About Large Print
All Random House Large Print editions are published in a 16-point typeface

In the latest installment of The Vampire Chronicles, Anne Rice summons up dazzling worlds to bring us the story of Armand - eternally young, with the face of a Botticelli angel. Armand, who first appeared in all his dark glory more than twenty years ago in the now-classic Interview with the Vampire, the first of The Vampire Chronicles, the novel that established its author worldwide as a magnificent storyteller and creator of magical realms.

Now, we go with Armand across the centuries to the Kiev Rus of his boyhood - a ruined city under Mongol dominion - and to ancient Constantinople, where Tartar raiders sell him into slavery. And in a magnificent palazzo in the Venice of the Renaissance we see him emotionally and intellectually in thrall to the great vampire Marius, who masquerades among humankind as a mysterious, reclusive painter and who will bestow upon Armand the gift of vampiric blood.

As the novel races to its climax, moving through scenes of luxury and elegance, of ambush, fire, and devil worship to nineteenth-century Paris and today's New Orleans, we see its eternally vulnerable and romantic hero forced to choose between his twilight immortality and the salvation of his immortal soul.

Amazon.com Review
In the familiar style of vampire as seducer, narrator Alfred Molina (Boogie Nights) uses his smooth, tranquil voice to excellent effect, luring listeners ever deeper into the dark, mysterious, and blood-soaked world of The Vampire Armand. Rice has crafted an intriguing plot, one that expands on events from her earlier books, yet stands alone as a compelling exploration of the Cimmerian secrets that have shaded one of her most fascinating characters. Molina is a talented reader, and he revels here in the expertly crafted story line, lush language, and tortured emotions of a haunted soul caught in the eternal darkness that lurks between the living and the dead. (Running time: four hours, four cassettes) --George Laney

From Publishers Weekly
Fantasy's great advantage is that authors can make anything happen?even rewriting their own stories, as Rice does here. Readers of her 1995 novel, Memnoch the Devil, will recall that the vampire Armand ended his existence by stepping into the sun. Since he was a popular character from earlier tales, a resounding protest from fans followed. In response, Rice concocted a way in this, her seventh Vampire Chronicle since Interview with the Vampire (1976), to raise Armand from the dead. He is, in fact, the narrator of this story, in which he looks back on his earthly existence, revisiting his apprenticeship in 16th-century Venice to the regal vampire artist, Marius De Romanus, who saved his life with the kiss of immortality. Afterward, Armand returned to his Russian homeland, but when disaster parted him from Marius, he became the nihilistic leader of a pack of Parisian vampires. Rice offers exquisite details of erotic romps and political intrigues while reprising other material familiar to her fans, but finally returns to the pressing question of what happened to Armand in the sun's lethal rays. She supplies a vivid and resonant description of the experience, set against the counterpoint of Beethoven's Appassionata. Unfortunately, she dims the effect by dragging Armand through rambling scenes involving two odd children, Sybelle and Benji. Otherwise, this is a lavishly poetic recital in which Armand struggles with the fragility of religious belief. The final scene is a stunner. Editor, Victoria Wilson; agent, Lynn Nesbit. First printing 750,000; BOMC main selection; simultaneously available in audio and large-print editions.

by far my favorite chronicle.
By Asha
I have read all of The Vampire Chronicles over at least 20 times and I love each and every one of them, but while Lestat is my favorite character this particular book of Armand's life story is my absolute favorite. I love how after reading this book all the gaps that you may have had about Armand finally get filed in. After reading this book I finally understood him. It is like Anne put's her all in each and every one of her characters and Armand is no exception. He is by far the most complex of all her chronicle vampires and you see that in this book. I love how in this book you get to see a tender side to Armand that you really don't get to see much. You get to see the change he made from Amadeo to Armand. This story is just amazing. Also Anne's attention to detail is magnificent. She treats every detail like it is the key to all understanding and I admire that. I also admire her attention to historic details. I love how in her chronicles she always intertwined her fiction and the lives or her vampires with historic places and events. It is very thought provoking. Overall I love how while reading this you can feel every emotion that Armand felt. When he is happy you feel his happiness and when he is sad you feel and understand it all. Out of all the chronicles though this book is the one that I literally get engrossed in to the point that it is like I am not merely reading it, but I am there. I get so sucked into his story that it is like I am no longer just sitting in my room reading a book, but I am there. This at times makes it difficult, especially when Armand becomes numb, because I feel every emotion he has as if it was my own, but it is worth it because this book is beyond all words. Anne Rice did wonderfully with this book and I would recommend it to anyone who has an imagination.

Don't know what you all are talking about but.....
By A Customer
Maybe it's because I'm kind of new to Anne Rice, but, by far, Armand is my most favorite character because of this book. It seems that most of the reviewers who didn't like this book were looking for a more "action" book (i.e. Queen of the Damned). Let's get this one straight, Armand is absolutely a different and very unique vampire even by, dare I say, Rice's standards. This is the kind of book you would read w/ your cup o' Java, not one that you'd expect to have all blood and glory. Armand seems like the ultimate brat prince but at the same time seems like a fragile angel teetering on the brink of oblivion, and in some parts of the book he falls in, but amazingly flys back up, reborn but still the eternal child. He's the fallen angel, but the only one worthy of Heaven. Rice, as always, is poetic in all her work and this book is no exception, she treats every detail as if it is a divine revelation. I say keep it up, her books just keep getting better and better, even if some of the things she writes aren't very agreeable to me, but at least I still respect her passion of HONEST expression. I don't think she even tries to sugar her novels up for the sake of readers. She writes what's in her heart (which is purely selfish) at that moment, and I praise her for it.

How many times ways can you tell/sell the same story?
By A Customer
Poor Anne Rice - she's making a bundle of money writing garbage like "The Vampire Armand" and getting away with it. Personally, I think she's a hoot, but for the past couple of years (after "The Witching Hour") her books have reached depths of bathos and boredom I never thought possible. Anne's books look lovely on the outside ("Pandora" WAS pretty, folks, admit it) but she's just regurgitating the same old characters in the same old vein (yes, pun intended). Anne knows that sex sells, too - but the homoeroticism is getting stale, girlfriend. How erotic can a sexual act be when all it entails is blood whooshing and sloshing about? Is it me, or is Anne herself confused with the "raison d'etre" of her characters? Marius - good? bad? indifferent? And Armand - why is everybody suddenly swooning over this guy? I remember my first impressions of him were not pretty. We all fell in love with Lestat, Louis, even Claudia, because these characters were refreshingly modern and interesting - they had dimension. Complex, sensual and elegant, they juggled good and evil on a daily basis. At times you weren't sure on which side of the angels they stood. Now,everyone's being subjected to Anne's psychoanalysis. Is it possible you're running out of ideas, Anne? Heaven forfend! "Armand" is like a freshman expository writing project: nice ideas abound, but there's no logic or reason to make this story cohesive, let alone interesting. Get the couch out of the office, Anne, and write something you can really be proud of. Let's bury these guys and move on to more of the compelling fiction you're capable of writing.
