Frances Girard is a young editor at a publishing house--attractive, respected . . . and undeniably bored. Tired of hearing everyone else's fascinating story, Frances longs to star in her own. So when she meets the brazen, renegade avant-garde theater director Paul Treat, Frances unwittingly jumps at the chance to break away from the cozy decorum of her class and career.

Life with Paul is different from anything Frances has ever experienced. Unlike the civilized literati that comprise her circle, Paul is all action--unpredictable and wildly brilliant. Suddenly her humdrum life is swept away by the bohemian whirlwind of Paul's world. But how long can Frances sustain this vicarious connection? The answer becomes shockingly clear one hilarious evening when the topic of conversation turns to group sex. For after that night, this unlikely pair embark upon an uproarious ride that will change their lives forever.

From Publishers Weekly
A blonde, beautiful, bright, kind and giving young editor, Frances Girard becomes lover, handmaiden and fall-girl to Paul Treat, a hypochondriac and moody director of plays. PW compared Group Sex to "Laurie Colwin's best work."
Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Arensberg, whose Sister Wolf ( LJ 9/15/80) won the American Book Award for Best First Novel in 1981, has written a second novela "romantic comedy"part of which first appeared as a short story in the O. Henry Prize Collection of 1980. Her heroine, Frances Girard, is unqualifiedly a downtrodden doormat. Everyone takes advantage of Frances, not least her lover, Paul Treat, avant-garde theater director. Arensberg details their affair with humor and insight, but they remain essentially types: the unfailingly giving woman, the blindly taking man. It is not Paul's violation of her personality that finally makes Frances rebel but his sexual infidelity. Like all romantic comedies this one ends happily. For all its sophisticated wit and telling detail, the novel remains only clever, and like a conversation that drones on long after the point is made, becomes slightly boring. "A SPARKLING ROMANTIC COMEDY . . . A provocative mood change from Arensberg's stunning first novel, Sister Wolf."

Needs new title....
By EasyReader Jr.
I have to agree with the previous reader's review. This was book was somewhat disappointing for several reasons. One, this book was not about "Group Sex" at all. Group sex was only part of a group conversation that took place on one evening of the entire book! I can't help but to wonder if the author used the title to attract 'would-be' readers... Second, most of the secondary characters in the book were extremely bland and boring, but I believe that may have been the author's intention to emphasize the life of the main character, Frances. Third, the reader may or may not understand why Frances would stay in a topsy-turvy relationship with Paul Treat, a theatre playwright, and the reader may grasp this in the very ending of the book where Frances finally voices her desires.

Uncomfortable
By Molly M. Wolf
Having been introduced to Arensburg's work through the magnificent "Incubus," I was a little disappointed with "Group Sex." A truly disturbing tale of a young editor and her love (?) affair with a theatre director.
Although I finished the book in the matter or two days, it was an uncomfortable read. The main character allows her lover to completely reform her, pulling her in and out of distorted shapes. The main character is uncomfortable with her lover through most of the novel, and the reader senses this.
Because I think Arensburg is a gifted and talented writer, I cannot completely malign the book. "Group Sex" is a quick read, and an engaging one, although a bit disturbing for this reader.

The child of their greatest heroes--
he was destined to become their darkest enemy . . .

In the twenty-second century, the discovery of human telepaths led to terror and bloodshed, and to the creation of the Psi Corps--a government agency of elite telepaths who were used to control their own kind. Under the command of a power-mad politician, the Corps became a ruthless tool of oppression, and the telepath underground was formed.

Matthew and Fiona Dexter led the resistance to its greatest victories. But when they were martyred for the cause, their only child was claimed by the very forces they had died opposing.

Raised from infancy within the Psi Corps, Alfred Bester was a telepath of exceptional ability, determined to make his mark by transforming himself into a master of deceit. Schooled in hate but tormented by shards of conscience, he wrestled with the seductiveness of the sinister cause he served. But slowly stripped of humanity by the war between decency and betrayal, he surrendered his soul--and rose to become the most dreaded figure of his time . . .

Amazon.com Review
Babylon 5 is a rarity among SF TV series in having a thoroughly worked out future history, even if parts of that history are only hinted at on TV. Which is where this novel comes in. Based on an original outline by series creator J. Michael Straczynski and following Dark Genesis: The Birth of the Psi Corps, it is the second novel of a trilogy detailing the history of the Psi Corps. Yet it is sufficiently self-contained to be accessible to readers unfamiliar with B5.

The book chronicles the life of the Psi Corps Alfred Bester from boyhood to the dramatic events that will first take him to the eponymous space station. As befits the show, Deadly Relations is complex and well characterized, aware of SF history, and filled with fascinating background detail. J. Gregory Keyes portrays Bester's paradoxical nature: a man haunted and lonely, able to read the thoughts of others, and capable of betraying those closest to him out of a sense of duty to the greater good. A sinister, ruthless figure becomes a sympathetic, almost tragic antihero as the book ranges from Earth to the Beta Colony and Mars.

The fictional Alfred Bester had a real-life namesake who authored several major SF novels. These include the still extraordinary 1953 thriller of murder and psychic detection, to which Deadly Relations pays due homage. If you enjoy B5, try The Demolished Man by the original Alfred Bester. It's a genuine SF classic. --Gary S. Dalkin, Amazon.co.uk

The B5 Ideal: Enjoyable on its Own yet a Part of the Whole
By Robert F. Cartland
J. Gregory Keyes's second installment of the Psi Corp trilogy `Deadly Relation -Bester Ascendant' is a wonderful addition the Babylon 5 tapestry. The first book of the trilogy, `Dark Genesis -The Birth of the Psi Corps', explores the Psi Corps itself, its conception, birth and the struggles faced during its adolescence. The second installment focuses on a single character, the celebrated antihero Al Bester. We learn of Bester's childhood, education, adolescence and development into the Psi Cop Babylon 5 fans love to hate. Keyes's excellent writing provides the loyal Babylon 5 fan with a superbly convincing treatment of Al Bester offering character development and dimensions unattainable in the television show. Considering what Walter Koenig's acting and Straczynski's writing have brought to this character, this is saying a lot.
The non-Babylon 5 fan should enjoy this installment of the trilogy as much as the first. Fitting the ideal of a Babylon 5 story, the novel is thoroughly enjoyable in its own yet brilliantly connected to the larger Babylon 5 universe. The only aspect that might appear strained to the non-B5 fan is an out-of-the-blue reference to the Earth-Minbari war. For the non-fan, this war is the subject of the film and novel `In The Beginning' and an essential part of the series Babylon 5.
The true Babylon 5 fan will appreciate the story even more. Series creator J. M. Straczynski provided the outline for the story and reviewed the final product; series editor Fiona Avery provided some assistance and control as well. Besides the mentioned reference to `In The Beginning' there are tie-ins to the television series spanning from the first to the fifth year, a nice connection to the 7th novel `The Shadow Within', and a nod to DC comic #11 `The Psi Corps and You' that is a real grabber. We also see the events of comic series #5 to 8 from Bester's point-of-view. The connections are not forced, strained or redundant making the story wonderfully satisfying in its own right.
Finally, some additional credit should go to Keyes's care as a writer and the assistance he received from members of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Lab. The Martian climate and geology are accurate (compared to one of the early B5 novels) and he does a convincing job describing Lunar and Martian colonization. The combination of science fiction, mystery and politics together with outstanding character development makes this novel a worthy addition to the Babylon 5 universe.

A Must for B5 Fans. A Good Read for All.
By Baycity
Spin-offs from television series usually leave a lot to be desired. But Babylon 5 was no ordinary series. And while the five year series was complete unto itself, questions were left unanswered and fascinating side trips were unexplored. This isn't a complaint, it's part of what made the series so unique and special.
The Psi Corp trilogy (made up of: 1) Dark Genesis: The Birth of the Psi Corp; 2) Deadly Relations: Bester Ascendant; and 3) Final Reckoning: The Fate of Bester) provides critical background B5 fans will relish and entertaining insight into what made Al Bester one of Babylon 5's most fascinating characters. The fact that they're based on an outline by J. Michael Straczynski makes all three books "authorized" B5 history.
The first book, Dark Genesis, is the weakest of the three. While the topic will be of interest to Babylon 5 fans (and of little interest to anyone else), it can't help but come off as anything more than a travelogue populated by cardboard characters. Too much needs to be explained to allow much focus on plot or character development. Instead, the book often comes off less like a novel and more like a "script bible" for the television series, painting the back story for episodes featuring the Psi Corp.
In the final two books of the trilogy, however, Keyes does a fine job of capturing Bester, one of the series most intriguing characters. He not only relates his life, but he even makes him likeable - at times. Deadly Relations takes place before most of the events covered by the television series; while the majority of Final Reckoning occurs subsequent to the series' timeline. And, as is a prerequisite in books of this genre, he weaves in events and characters from the series. But Keyes does it very well without the cameos seeming out of place at all.
I'm purposefully not addressing the story line. If you're a B5 fan reading all three books is almost mandatory. It adds greatly to the saga. If you're not a fan of Babylon 5, you can definitely skip Dark Genesis. However, you may find Deadly Relations and Final Reckoning worthwhile. This isn't Nebula material, but it's fun.

More a biography than a novel
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Deadly Relations opens as Bester is 6 years old, growing up in the Psi Corps center in Switzerland. The book follows his life as he struggles with his ambition and his desire to be loved. Interestingly for fans of the Babylon 5 TV show, Lyta and Byron have cameos and this book ends with Bester about to leave for his first trip to the station.
Fans of the series will enjoy this book. J. Gregory Keyes has done a good job of capturing Bester and making him sympathetic. Bester truly becomes a well-rounded character whose motives we can understand, even if we don't agree with them. This is something I enjoyed about the show itself, and I'm glad to see it continued here.
However, this book suffers from the same problem as the first in the trilogy - no real plot. It follows Bester for 68 years, and as such reads more like a biography. There is no real climax; it just ends. The other characters just serve the purpose of helping us understand Bester and are not super interesting on their own.
Any fan of Babylon 5 will enjoy this novel because of the information on Bester. New comers to the series will be more interested once they've viewed the show.

More than 25 million Americans have osteoporosis, or porous bones, and another 34 million people are at risk because of their low bone density. This is preventable, says author George Kessler, an osteopathic physician. In The Bone Density Diet, he explains which risk factors can and cannot be changed. Although some risk factors are genetic or depend on past behaviors, most of them are based on choices we are making now. Kessler describes in practical detail how to make bone-healthy changes that include diet, exercise, supplements, and lifestyle.

He presents a holistic program for bone protection. You learn which foods to eat and which to avoid, with menus and recipes; which nutrients are essential, and how to supplement most efficiently (and explains why taking calcium alone isn't the best tactic); which hormones you need, and when; and the best exercises to build your bones. Kessler presents a lot of vital and up-to-date information in a clear and friendly style, with plenty of interesting boxed tips and anecdotes to add variety, although calling it a six-week program is rather misleading. Kessler never intends for you to go off the plan after six weeks or see tangible results in that time; he means that you will have integrated it into a habit if you follow it for six weeks. --Joan Price

From Publishers Weekly
Kessler, a physician in private practice and instructor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, offers an astonishingly simple diet and exercise program designed to help those who are suffering from osteoporosis or who are at risk of this bone disease. Kessler first explains the disease and debunks the common myths: men, not just women, can have the disease; preventive steps should begin when someone reaches adulthood rather than in middle-age. Kessler includes questions to help readers determine whether they're at risk, then sets those at risk on his diet and exercise program. The sensible diet plan includes eating less saturated fat and red meat; eating five or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables; reducing consumption of caffeine and soda; using soy products and eating at least one serving of beans daily. Basic tips on increasing calcium intake, for both children and adults, are included. Finally, Kessler offers an exercise program as well as information (of particular interest to women) on hormone replacement therapy and other drug treatment. A "must" for anyone interested in bone health
By S
Bone Density Diet is very thorough in covering all aspects of bone health. (It might provide more information than some people want.) Even though it is very readable, I wish it had been edited a bit. There was quite a bit of repeating points. The boxes and charts were helpful though, and nothing was too technical to understand.
Also, I tried to put together the supplementation Kessler advises. It isn't easy to do without taking a lot of pills.
Overall I would suggest this as an excellent book for women especially who are concerned about osteoporosis. It can inspire readers to do something about the possiblity of being hit with this disease--to take charge instead of just hoping it doesn't happen. I'm glad I read it. Even if a reader only does one or two things learned in the book, they will be better off for it.

Bone Density Diet
By Gratefulacres4
Finally, a book that puts it all together and gives you a plan of action. I had lots of pieces of information that I wasn't sure what to do with. I am interested in prevention because I am in the very high risk catagory for osteoporosis. Dr. Kessler gives a wide and balanced view of all treatments and prevention with a plan of action. I have been promoting this book to all my women friends!

The only book on Osteoporosis you'll need to buy!
By A Customer
My mother recently underwent a Bone Scan that revealed she had Osteopenia. Her diagnosis was all the prompting I needed to seek more info into Osteoporosis. I was shocked at how little attention such a devastating disorder had received over the years! I applaud Dr. Kessler for his efforts to educate not only the public on the importance of maintaining healthy bones but his colleagues as well. This book makes you aware that PREVENTION is the key to avoiding Osteoporosis....With that knowledge in hand I have drastically changed my eating habits and exercise routines. Ironically......I feel better than I have in years!

July 1193. King Richard Lionheart lies in a German prison, held for ransom by the emperor. His mother, Dowager Queen Eleanor, ransacks England for gold to buy his freedom, while his younger brother, John, plots with King Philippe of France to ensure that he rots and dies in chains.

When a ransom payment vanishes, Eleanor hastily dispatches young Justin de Quincy to investigate. In wild, beautiful Wales, his devotion to the queen will be supremely tested–as an arrogant border earl, a cocky Welsh prince, an enchanting lady, and a traitor of the deepest dye welcome him with false smiles and deadly conspiracies. The queen’s treasure is nowhere to be found, but assassins are everywhere . . . and blood runs red in the dragon’s lair.

From Publishers Weekly
In Penman's third polished medieval mystery (after 1998's Cruel as the Grave), her dedicated and resourceful hero, Justin de Quincy, tries to recover, quite literally, a king's ransom in coffers of precious metals and bales of wool, which are as valuable as gold, that have been stolen in northern Wales. It's 1193, and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine fervently needs to ransom her eldest son, Richard Lionheart, from the Holy Roman Emperor before King Philippe of France can interfere and her younger son, John, can seize the crown. Justin proceeds into the thickets and wild forests of Wales, where he's deeply mistrusted both as an Englishman and an outsider. He must penetrate abundant Welsh intrigues and deceptions in order to discover the treasure as well as solve murders and comfort bereaved lovers. Despite a large cast of characters from every social class, Penman keeps them all clearly distinguishable. Her familiarity with Cheshire and Wales is evident in her descriptions of the terrain and verdure, while her use of modern language, with only an occasional "for certes" to remind readers of the period, makes the story a pleasure to read.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School--In this sequel to The Queen's Man (Ballantine, 1998), Dowager Queen Eleanor is desperately trying to rescue her son Richard Lionheart, imprisoned by the Holy Roman Emperor. Meanwhile, her youngest son, John, plots to ensure that his brother never leaves prison alive. Justin De Quincy, the illegitimate son of the Bishop of Chester, is sent to Wales by the queen to recover one of the ransom payments, which has mysteriously disappeared. It was primarily in the form of fine Cistercian wool sent in wagons under guard to Chester. De Quincy investigates the theft and delves into the labyrinthine politics of Wales. Davydd, a prince of North Wales, claims the payment was stolen and the guards slain. Using friends and contacts and his own wits, De Quincy comes close to tracking it down, and then becomes a target himself. Amid scheming, murder, and mayhem, he ultimately prevails. Medieval Britain comes alive in this fast-paced tale. Students of history and those just looking for a good mystery will be equally rewarded.--Molly Connally, Chantilly Regional Library, VA

From Booklist
Welcome to twelfth-century English and Welsh politics by way of this riveting and rich mystery novel. It is the third in the author's series of medieval mysteries featuring Eleanor of Aquitaine, queen of England and certainly one of history's most colorful royal figures. Penman, also the well-established author of several non-mystery historical novels, pulls from the Plantagenet period in English history a particularly engrossing event: Queen Eleanor's son, the famous crusader Richard the Lionheart, is now king, but he is being held for ransom by the Holy Roman Emperor, and the queen is doing everything possible to gather enough money to meet the ransom demands. Enter one Justin de Quincy, a relatively low-born individual, whom the queen trusts implicitly. Off to Wales Queen Eleanor sends him, to investigate the loss of a shipment of precious Welsh wool that was coming her way as part of her demand that all corners of the realm help in her effort to free her adored son. The plot then takes complicated, but plausible and even delicious, turns. Brad Hooper

Best Justin de Quincy novel yet
By Roger A. Knopf
Loved this book, having read all the earlier books in the series (as well as Penman's two historical novels about Richard III which are the same time period) thought it was the best yet. I am an unabashed Penman fan, so my advice is always just read all of them - no different here. Almost nobody does medieval fiction as well as she does, with impeccable research and lively, keen writing.

Penman is a master
By Whitney Reinhart
The de Quincy books are easy reads which follow a predictable plot line. That said, the predictability doesn't detract from the enjoyability of the reading. Penman is an excellent character creator and historian. If you're a fan of the era and want believable fiction, her books are a sure-thing.

Down to Earth (Colonization, Book 2), by Harry Turtledove

In 1942 Hitler led the world's most savage military machine. Stalin ruled Russia while America was just beginning to show its strength in World War II. Then, in Harry Turtledove's brilliantly imagined Worldwar saga, an alien assault changed everything. Nuclear destruction engulfed major cities, and the invaders claimed half the planet before an uneasy peace could be achieved.

A spectacular tale of tyranny and freedom, destruction and hope, Colonization takes us into the tumultuous 1960s, as the reptilian Race ponders its uneasy future. But now a new, even deadlier war threatens. Though the clamoring tribes of Earth play dangerous games of diplomacy, the ultimate power broker will be the Race itself. For the colonists have one option no human can ignore. With a vast, ancient empire already in place, the Race has the power to annihilate every living being on planet Earth . . .

Amazon.com Review
Colonization: Down to Earth marks part two of part two of Harry Turtledove's epic alternate history in which WWII gets interrupted--and violently abridged--by a hostile alien invasion. With some of the same characters introduced in the four-volume Worldwar series and Colonization: Second Contact, the story arc continues through the 1960s, as the Lizards (along with their second fleet, composed not of soldiers but of colonists) continue to grapple with their not-quite-subdued conquest, Tosev 3 (a.k.a. earth). And Turtledove's alt-'60s are not--to say the least--about peace, love, and understanding.

Now the reptilian ETs must face off against three world superpowers in an uneasy truce: the United States; Molotov's SSSR; and the psychotic, nuke-wielding Nazis under Himmler. Elsewhere, the U.K. flirts with fascism, Red China (commanded by none other than Chairman Mao) wages a bloody resistance against its scaly oppressors, and the Arab world does likewise under the guidance of Ayatollah Khomeini. As ever with Turtledove, plot takes precedence over characterizations, but his suspenseful twists and turns don't disappoint. And while Down to Earth proves a bit less martial than its predecessors, the action still satisfies--if nothing else, the bang-up finale is worth the wait. --Paul Hughes

From Library Journal
The alien invasion that transformed the nature of the Second World War into a fight between humans and "Lizards" resulted in a state of uneasy d?tente. Twenty years later, Lizards lay claim to parts of the earth despite a growing state of resistance to their presence. Continuing the story begun in Colonization: Second Contact (LJ 1/99), Turtledove expands on his imaginary history of the 20th century. He demonstrates his talent for crafting drama on a global scale by concentrating on the individual stories that make up the big picture. A good choice for sf collections.

From Booklist
Turtledove opens another ripping yarn of World War II Earth invaded by colonizing aliens with a revealing conversation between two Lizards (aliens). The more recent arrival accuses the 40-year veteran of turning into a Big Ugly (human) by forgetting the Race (Lizard-dom) in all its glory and caring only "for the immediate." That is one theme of an exciting novel. The Race and humans are becoming more alike as a generation grows up never knowing a world without Lizards. The invaders try to bribe and tax humans out of their religious beliefs and introduce offworld beasts that rapidly become pets--and pests. Meanwhile, humans demonstrate their capacity for catching up with Lizard technology with appalling haste. When Nazis threaten nuclear attack, the Lizards announce their willingness to sacrifice their new colony if it prevents humans from spreading to the Race's planets. Only reluctant cooperation can prevent planetary devastation, and the tentative attraction between a Lizard-raised young woman and the 20-year-old son of Major Sam Yeager underscores that fascinating process. "Tastes lak chikkin!"
By R. L. MILLER
Would you believe online chat rooms during the Cold War era? Of course, these are a product of The Race's technology as the planet Earth becomes their Vietnam/ Afghanistan--a decades-long war they can't seem to win decisively despite superior firepower. We Tosevites (aka "Big Uglies") have a lot more fight in us than they predicted. Anyway, as you'd expect, humans are hacking into The Race's internet posing as their own people, and their chat rooms are just as inane in message content as the ones we know and love here in the real world. An American guerilla couple exiled by The Race to South Africa are facing culture shock over there--in the real world, they'd be Randy Weaver types with racial attitudes to match. They're involved in the "ginger trade"--if you're familiar with the previous book "Second Contact", as well as the four volumes of the "Worldwar" series, you'll know that ginger is The Race's equivalent to cocaine. It's addictive, mood-altering--plus it's aphrodisiac to the point of causing gang rape among otherwise respectable Lizards ("Don't bogart that Canada Dry, mah friend. Pass it over to me"). There's a message in this series' ginger-as-dope concept, I think--at least in terms of this new fave-rave ideology going around nowadays. We've all heard it; "Goodness Gracious, it's ever so hard to fight the War On Drugs (sigh) and anyway we're losing (hand across brow to signify weariness). So why not just legalize it all?" One other thing these ginger-pushers encounter are reptiles imported from The Race's homeworld to be used as livestock. Their cabdriver/ guide comments that he hears they taste like chicken. My "mind's ear" actually played back the driver's remark in the voice of that Cajun gator hunter in the SUV commercial. Aaa-eee!

The humans are catching up...or are they?
By Matthew Dovell
Turtledove again puts us in the 60's in a world filled with lizards. Some have suggested not htat much happens here but sometimes suspense makes up for it.
The descriptions of the space race are excellent. You might guess as to which ship fired the missles from the previous volume in this one. (I'll give a hint, there's a direct quote from one of the characters that makes it obvious)
The only sad thing about the books (I've asked Turtledove this several times). Is that there's no movies or games planed for the series. An RPG would seriously rock on any platform.
I still wonder however if this series will now go into the 1980's or after that the 2000's perhaps with a liberation of the lizard planets.

Another remarkable installment!
By Amazon Customer
This is the best sci fi series I've read. I marvel at Turtledove's vivid imagination and uncanny ability to characterize the lizards. I get so engrossed in his books that they seem utterly real to me. There are many characters in the book, some not so likeable as others, but I think he does a good job maintaining continuity. As fine as the characterization is, let's not forget this is primarily a work of plot, and the twists and turns do not disappoint. I hated to finish the book, because the wait for the next installment will seem so long. This is one series I hope continues for many more volumes! I'd appreciate any recommendations from other readers who love this series.

Amazon.com Review
An Imperial Star Destroyer plus a doughnut equals a Neimoidian battleship. So reveals Phantom Menace design director Doug Chiang, as he's discussing how the previous Star Wars films influenced the conceptual planning of Episode I. Fans of Star Wars, of course, love to get this kind of skinny, and The Making of Episode I doesn't disappoint. In this comprehensive account of Phantom Menace's origins, packed with page after page of behind-the-scenes sketches and set photos, you also learn about the many hairdos of the Jedi, how Huttese is based on the Incan language Catua, and what a huge influence Young Indiana Jones had on Episode I's seat-of-the-pants, guerrilla-style production.

All the films in the Star Wars saga share unusual origins, but Phantom Menace may take the prize with its ground-breaking technology, nonlinear digital production process, strenuous casting demands, and, of course, the idiosyncratic style of Lucas himself, with his focus on editing and collaboration with actors and designers. The veterans of quite a few "making of" books and documentaries, Laurent Bouzereau (Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays) and Jody Duncan (Cinefex magazine) don't miss a trick, combining exclusive Lucas interviews with blow-by-blow recountings of every stage in the process, from initial script development and casting to storyboarding, costume design, and set-building through to shooting, editing, and scoring. --Paul Hughes

The Ultimate Tour de Force!
By Johannes
Well,to begin this review I must say that this is an incredibly interesting behind the scenes (BTS)look at one of the most successfull films of the 90`s.
I don`t think I've ever been looking forward to any film as much as this (may be except the Lord of the Rings),and it was really a pleasure to watch it,although I was a little bit disappointed on the childishness of the movie.
But with the incredible special effects,I was more than pleased to see how they were done. And I bought this book and became very happy. It contains nearly all you need to know about SW Episode I. It follows the movie as it developed from beeing just an idea to the most impressive CG effects movie I'd ever seen by that time. In the introduction,George Lucas says how he had to develop an entire new world, which is an interesting read about how he created the new characters and locations. Anakin needed a mother,Obi-Wan needed a master and Palpatine needed an apprentice. The first chapter contains some great preproduction artwork and notes for every drawing. They are really nice, and definitly worth having (some of them does not appear anywhere else). It also has some notes when looking for good cast. They needed a man who looked like a new Alec Guiness for playing Obi-Wan and they needed a 8-year old boy who could really act to play Anakin. That wasn`t easy to find.
There are also some pics of the fantastic clothes featured in the film,as Amidala`s dresses.
The second chapter is mostly about the shooting itself. It is interesting to see how the stunts were performed and how they built up all the locations on Tatooine. There are also some good shots of the cool masks that people wore during the podracer sequences. In this chapter, there are also lots of interviews with the crew, especially George Lucas.
The third chapter is about the special effects and it`s named "I could do whatever I wanted". If you didn`t knew this already,I can say that Lucas was planning this film already in '77,but he waited until now, because now he could create all of the fantastic characters and environments with the help of today's computers. There are lots of interesting BTS images here, such as the podracer arena - one before, with just about 50 people, and one when after the CG adding, with thousands of people. And it looks terrific!
At the back of the book, there is a complete list of all people that were ever involved in the project, taking up approx. 15 pages!
Over all, this is a great Behind the Scenes look at Episode I.
It has everything you could ever want from such a book. So if you have any interest in Star Wars,behind-the scenes of cool movies,or just special effects, then this book is definitly something. And if you think there is too little artwork, don`t worry - there is another book named "The Art of Star Wars". Buy both of those and the Visual Dictionary and your Phantom Menace collection will be complete!

To quote Darth Vader "Impressive".
By Donal Fenlon
This book provides a snap-shot of film-making at the end of the century. The story of Star Wars episode I's crafting in 150 pages. Packed with detail. Short quotes from people involved, from cast to crew, pepper the text adding colour and information. Well illustrated, clearly told and attention grabbing. Thorough in its scope and ecomomic in language, good reading and eminently collectible. A suitable companion to Thomas Smith's, Industrial Light and Magic: The Art of Special Effects (1986), which covered much on the special effects of episodes IV-VI. A contribution to the myth of Star Wars.

It's allright.
By A Customer
This is a pretty good book because it offers candid views of the production of the movie like you would expect it to, but there is very little talk of the characters in the movie, especially Anakin Skywalker, Queen Amidala, Padme Naberrie, Jar Jar Binks, Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, and others. There was little on their background story that would have shed light on the movie plot. Also, little was said how props for the movie were made so quickly. But the book has excellent photos and is readable.

The Approaching Storm (Star Wars), by Alan Dean Foster

In the years since the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the Republic has continued to crumble, and more and more, the Jedi are needed to help the galactic government maintain order. As Star Wars: Episode II opens, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker have just returned from a mission on a world called Ansion. Written by beloved Star Wars veteran Alan Dean Foster, and starring a new character from the upcoming movie, The Approaching Storm tells the story of that daring mission.

The Republic is decaying, even under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was elected to save the galaxy from collapsing under the forces of discontent. On the tiny but strategic planet of Ansion, a powerful faction is on the verge of joining the growing secessionist movement. The urban dwellers wish to expand into the prairies outside their cities–the ancestral territory of the fierce, independent Ansion nomads. If their demands are not met, they will secede–an act that could jump-start a chain reaction of withdrawal and rebellion by other worlds of the Republic.

At the Chancellor’s request, the Jedi Council sends two Jedi Knights, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luminara Unduli, to resolve the conflict and negotiate with the elusive nomads. Undaunted, Obi-Wan and Luminara, along with their Padawans Anakin Skywalker and Barriss Offee, set out across the wilderness. Many perils lie waiting to trap them. The Jedi will have to fulfill near-impossible tasks, befriend wary strangers, and influence two great armies to complete their quest, stalked all the while by an enemy sworn to see the negotiations collapse and the mission fail . . .

this is what happened just before Attack of the Clones
By Joe Sherry
Early in "Attack of the Clones" there is a line stating that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker will be available to help protect Padme Amidala because they have just returned from a mission on Ansion? This seems to be just a throwaway line in the movie, a tiny bit of detail to provide coloring to the scene. In the larger Star Wars Universe, we now wonder what it was that Obi-Wan and Anakin were doing. What was this mission? "The Approaching Storm" is the story of this mission to Ansion.
Ansion is a small, unimportant planet. At least, that is how things appear to be on the surface. In reality, Ansion is a very important planet. It is tied with treaties and agreements to numerous other nearby planets and this makes the threats that Ansion might secede from the Republic to be very serious. If Ansion secedes, an entire star system will be pulled with it. To stop this secession, Chancellor Palpatine requests the Jedi Council send a couple of Jedi to Ansion to find a diplomatic solution to quietly find a way to keep Ansion in the Republic. The Jedi Council sends Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luminara Unduli, and their Padawan apprentices Anakin Skywalker and Barriss Offee.
"The Approaching Storm" is somewhat of an adventure story. It is well paced, has humor, some action and some politics. What I liked best about this novel was the characters of Luminara and Barriss. We got to see some of their perspective, but I would love to see a novel focus on these two characters. They provide a perfect counter balance to Anakin and Obi-Wan, and give a greater look at the variety of personalities in the Jedi Order.
Alan Dean Foster was the ghostwriter of the first Star Wars novelization, and he wrote the first Extended Universe novel "Splinter of the Mind's Eye". His latest Star Wars novel had a great feel to it, and it was so fast paced that I was able to easily finish it in two days. This isn't high literature, but it was certainly entertaining.

Living and breathing at last
By Matilda Trevelyan
When I read Alan Dean Foster would be writing a prequel novel to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, I was thrilled. Not because I believe Alan Dean Foster to be an immortal, literary giant, but because I knew from his previous works I could depend on him as an author to make his characters more human(oid).
And Mr. Foster delivers. If you, like me, were disappointed with Greg Bear's Rogue Planet or James Luceno's Cloak of Deception (C'mon guys, I'm on a planet in a galaxy far, far away. I'd like to know how it looks/smells/feels like to the characters and I'd like more personal touches/emotional interactions.) you will read this book with delight.
You get to know Anakin as a highly gifted, cocksure though slightly rebellious Padawan living those difficult teen-age years (wishing he were anywhere other than where he is, preferably with hot-rod landspeeders) and to get a feel for those personality flaws that will eventually bring the entire galaxy to its knees, you find Obi-Wan stepping out of the shadow of Anakin's great talent and see what an incredible young Jedi Knight he is in his own right, trying very hard and succeeding at being a role model anyone would look up to (he has even learned his lesson about ... life-forms tagging along), you see their interaction with the female Jedi and her Padawan who they join on their mission and discover that their innermost thoughts are not all that lofty sometimes.
Their mission is to negotiate and mediate a dispute on the planet Ansion with nomads who are resisting the native city dweller expansion into their ancestral prairies. The city dwellers threaten to secede from the Republic should they not get what they want.
The Jedi have a good chance to succeed.
Though there are plenty of political machinations going on to make sure they don't.
Though their journey to meet the nomads through the outback of Ansion reminds a fan of Foster's Flinx novels of the grasslands of Alaspin, you get a wonderful travelogue of the planet.
Overall, incredibly refreshing and enjoyable and surprisingly bittersweet at times for Star Wars fans. For, as one of the native characters reflects near the end of the novel, that in spite of how powerful and talented the Jedi are, he feels sorry for them.
And knowing the near future of the Jedi in the Star Wars world, we do too.

not what I expected, but good just the same
By A Customer
"the Approaching Storm" wasn't at all what I was expecting it to be when I first picked it up. Unlike most star wars books, it focuses more on character development and political intrigue then on space battles and lightsaber duels, and unlike most star wars books it is rather well written. The story itself revolves around two jedi knights, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luminara Unduli, and their respective padawans, Anakin Skywalker and Barriss Offee, as they set off to prevent a backward but strategically allied planet called Ansion from leaving the Republic. While the political talk and plotting was sort of hard to follow, I found myself swept away by Foster's descriptions of the planet and by the characters, especially Obi-Wan and Anakin. Obi-Wan is everything a powerful yet wise Jedi Knight should be, and Anakin is characterized as both willful and well-meaning, arrogant and vulnerable. Both characters are easily recognizable as the grown up versions of the characters that were introduced in Episode one, but at the same time both can be related to the characters they will become for "A New Hope." Luminara and Barriss were also well written and likable, although I can't help but think Foster could have come up with a better name then 'Barriss,' although that may not have been at his discretion.
My one problem with Foster's writing style is the formality of his language. I have a good vocabulary, but I still had to keep a dictionary handy while reading this book. The language is perfectly suited for description, and maybe the Jedi can get away with talking like that because they do seem like a formal crowd, but I just can't picture a hutt saying "Given that, I'm not surprised at the lack of enthusiasm on the part of your peurile hirelings." or Anakin responding to a statement with "Interminably." Even the two nut cases turned native guides talk like college proffesors. Beyond that and a couple of badly worded phrases, I was impressed with Foster's writing, which is almost never the case with a star wars novel.
I know from reading the reviews here at Amazon.com that a lot of people don't like the lack of action or the slow pace of this book. It's true that this book is not fast paced, and doesn't have any space battles, but it does have it's fair share of action, and the descriptions of the planet and the various animals and plants that the protagonists encounter on their journey more then make up for the lack of x-wings in this book. I would deffinately recommend it for older readers, but I think anyone belowe the age of fifteen might not enjoy it as much.

The Fourth Hand, by John Irving

While reporting a story from India, New York journalist Patrick Wallingford inadvertently becomes his own headline when his left hand is eaten by a lion. In Boston, a renowned surgeon eagerly awaits the opportunity to perform the nation’s first hand transplant. But what if the donor’s widow demands visitation rights with the hand? In answering this unexpected question, John Irving has written a novel that is by turns brilliantly comic and emotionally moving, offering a penetrating look at the power of second chances and the will to change.

Amazon.com Review
Like anything newsworthy, miracles of medicine and technology inevitably make their way out of the headlines and become the stuff of fiction. In recent years readers have been absorbed by media accounts of a transplanted hand, an experiment that ultimately ended in amputation. Medical ethicists reason that a hand, unlike a heart or a liver--essential organs conveniently housed out of sight--is in full view and one of a pair, arguably dispensable. In his 10th novel, however, John Irving undertakes to imagine just such a transplant, which involves a donor, a recipient, a surgeon, a particular Green Bay Packer fan, and the remarkable left hand that brings them together.

Television reporter Patrick Wallingford becomes a story himself when he loses his hand to a caged lion while in India covering a circus. The moment is captured live on film, and Patrick (who wears a "perpetual but dismaying smile--the look of someone who knows he's met you before but can't recall the exact occasion") is henceforth known as the lion guy. Before long, plans are made to equip Patrick with a new hand. Doctor Nicholas M. Zajac, superstar surgeon, indefatigable dog-poop scooper, runner, and part-time father, is poised to perform the operation. But the donor--or rather the widow of the donor--has a few stipulations. Doris Clausen wants to meet the one-handed reporter before the procedure, and insists on visitation rights afterward. Irving weaves these characters and a panoply of others together in a smart, funny, readable narrative. Often farcical, The Fourth Hand is ultimately something more: a tender chronicle of the redemptive power of love. --Victoria Jenkins

From Publishers Weekly
A touch of the bizarre has always enlivened Irving's novels, and here he outdoes himself in spinning a grotesque incident into a dramatic story brimming with humor, sexual shenanigans and unexpected poignancy. While reporting on a trapeze artist who fell to his death in India (shades of Irving's A Son of the Circus), handsome TV anchorman Patrick Wallingford experiences a freak accident his left hand is chewed off by a lion. Wallingford's network, a low-rent pseudo-CNN, promotes the video of the accident, making Wallingford notorious world-wide as "the lion guy." Five years after the accident, Wallingford is made whole via the second hand-transplant ever. The hand comes with a strange condition, however. It belonged to Otto Clausen, who willed it to Wallingford at wife Doris's instigation, and Doris wants visiting rights. On her first meeting with Wallingford, they have sex, Wallingford recognizing Doris's voice as one he heard in a vision in India while recovering from his accident. Doris, desperate to get pregnant, has her own agenda. Soon, in a sort of reversal of Taming of the Shrew, she is teaching the normally satyric Wallingford to domesticate his libido. Irving is not aiming for a grand statement in this novel, but something closer to the lovers-chasing-lovers structure of farce. As in all good comedy, there are some fabulous villains, chief among them Wallingford's sexually Machiavellian boss, Mary, who also wants to conceive his baby. Irving's set pieces are on that high level of American gothic comedy he has made uniquely his own the scene in which Wallingford goes to bed with a gum-chewing makeup girl is particularly irresistible. Refreshingly slim in comparison with Irving's previous works, and written with a new crispness, this fast-paced novel will do more than please Irving's numerous fans it will garner him new ones. (July 10)Forecast: An arresting cover, 300,00 first printing and Irving's perennial popularity will launch this book, a BOMC main selection, onto the charts with brio.

From Library Journal
The author's tenth novel charts events and emotions in the life of a newscaster whose fame skyrockets when his left hand is eaten by a lion on camera. When the "widow" of a transplant hand accompanies the appendage to meet the handsome amputee, the determined woman more or less coerces him into sex and conceives the child she's longed for. What follows is a mostly enjoyable trip, abundant in the quirks and themes familiar to Irving's legion of fans: scatological humor, women's rights activism, the rewarding stress of fatherhood, sports metaphors, circuses, and the chronic normality of eccentricities. Irving's worlds are ludicrous in the most appealing way and expertly sentimental at the same time, and his approachable language can be both musical and magical. But here, the promising fiction takes a sharp right turn to autopsy the real-life tragedies of the JFK Jr. and Egypt Air plane crashes Tom Wolfe-type reportage that we certainly don't look for from Irving. Perhaps more disappointing is that the protagonist is motivated primarily by shockingly unoriginal doubts about and eventual disdain for the news media's morbid coverage of world events. Irving's fiction is often moral in its own way, but the moral has never come so close to obscuring the narrative as in this book. The author's magic rules the day, but recent history plays too large a role here to make this the fiction for which he'll be remembered.

Only fair, and definitely unbalanced
By lb136
You don't even have to check the title page when you see the plot summary: reporter for sleazy cable news operation gets his hand bitten off by a lion, and a surgeon offers his service if a donor hand is found. One is, only the widow of the donor demands visiting rights. This has to be a John Irving novel, right? And it is of course. Question 13 in those ditsy little discussion group questions that seem to be appearing at the end of every paperback novel these days asks you to ponder this: "In what way does this novel have elements of a fairy tale or fable?"
For two-thirds of the way through, the answer seems obvious: all ways. Mr. Irving has created a surrealistically marvelous, portrayal of the news media and the people who populate it (the action in the novel is set against real-life events such as a Super Bowl game the Green Bay Packers lost and the weekend John F. Kennedy Jr. died). Patrick Wallingford, the victim, known forever after to the public as "The Lion Guy," manages to sleep with nearly every woman he becomes involved with, the widow of the man whose hand Wallingford has been given seems somewhat demented, while the hand surgeon himself, unhappily divorced, seems more obsessed with doggydo than hand surgery. In short, everyone in Wallingford's world seem at least slightly dysfunctional.
But then in the last third, it all goes wobbly and sentimental, as the action moves from the Boston-New York axis to Green Bay, and the character of the widow, Doris Clausen, becomes (just when you were imagining Drew Barrymore playing her in the movie version), well, Rene Zellweger, while Wallingford--who you've been imagining as Jim Carrey--morphs into Robin Williams. The last two chapters slog on interminably. It's "love stuff" time. And sadly, as Mr. Irving's author's note at the end indicates, this was intentional. Indeed, question 14 asks you: "Would you call `The Fourth Hand' a Love Story'? Why or why not?"
Well now! As the cable news channel satirized here would no doubt trumpet, "we report, you decide."
Notes and asides: Mr. Irving gets moon phases right (unlike so many authors): a moon two or three days from full will indeed set at about 3:00 a.m.

Ahhhh, lighten up, fellow readers!
By Gretchen C
I'm apparently a lone voice crying in the wilderness on this one, but I found it a good read. No, it hasn't got some of the dimension and nuance of some of the other Irving books, but bear in mind that my favorite Irving work is "A Son of the Circus" -- for crying out loud, guys, a book doesn't have to be deep and profound to be good! Sometimes, it's enough that it just be fun.
I wasn't prepared to like Pat Wallingford, but his character got under my skin by the end of the book. He ended up a sort of endearing bumbler, vulnerable despite his apparent "made for television" slickness. He reminded me of Inspector Dhar from "Circus". Certain of the scenes in the book (dog turd lacrosse, the tryst between Patrick and Angie) were laugh-out-loud funny. And the ending was as marginally anticlimactic as most such scenes are in life. That's a great bit of restraint, to sacrifice drama for verisimilitude -- and in an Irving ending, restraint is a rare virtue indeed.
Perhaps we've become spoiled by Irving, the way he tends to spin such a great yarn while creating such unforgettable and nuanced characters as Homer Wells and Owen Meany . . . I don't think that was what this book was *for*. Vonnegut seldom bothered to develop a character beyond a strange situation and a beguiling turn of phrase! Why should it be a sin when Irving does it?
I liked it. I'll read it again.

Best Left in Other's Hand
By C. B. Pendleton
Wait a minute...is this a John Irving novel or a lame Kurt Vonnegut novel? That's the question you'll more than likely be asking yourself after reading the first few chapters of this book. Nice try John, but no one can create that type of quirky novel full of comically surreal characters and sardonically satirical story lines the way Vonnegut does. Best stick to what you know. Still, Irving's ability to captivate the reader is unwavering, and he does manage to slip back into the familiar Irving style towards the last third of the book - when the much beleaguered protagonist, Patrick Wallingford, is fully revealed to be nothing more than an incredibly submissive poltroon. In Vonnegut's hands, (or should I say hand), the premise of a transplanted body part that retains the soul of its original owner would very likely have resulted in a masterpiece. As it is, this novel ends up a curious, but not altogether disappointing, addition to the collected works of one of America's most readable raconteurs.
