Here's one from the vaults: Vivian Livingston is the star of her own Web site, Vivianlives.com, where visitors learn all about this sassy fictional girl and her fabulous New York lifestyle. It's hard to believe a warhorse like this survived the market crash, but Vivian has spawned an actual book: The Autobiography of Vivian. The existence of this ill-written, ill-conceived book probably has more to do with Bridget Jones and Sex and the City than it does with any vogue for Web-based material. Whatever its raison d'être, Vivian's autobiography is a shocking display of bad writing: "Ahhhhhh, if men were only like dogs... Well, they are--oh just forget it--you know what I mean." No, we really don't. Not only is the book very nearly incoherent, it's lifted all of a piece from Sex and the City: Vivian is a cut-rate Carrie; her guy John is Mr. Big; and in case it wasn't enough to rip off the story and the characters, the book rips off the show's locations: on a big date, John takes Vivian to Da Silvano. This is less a novel than an extension of Krantz's popular Web site, Vivianlives.com, where interested parties can tour the virtual 20-something's apartment, learn about hip careers (life coach, e-commerce queen), get beauty tips and read her daily journal, which exhorts readers to "do something special!!!" such as buying the products linked to almost every page. Our heroine is a remarkably shallow Pennsylvania girl who wins a songwriting contest and moves to New York, best friend Sophie in tow, and discovers firsthand the struggles of blazing her own path and finding true love. Bouncing from a gig in a Village cafe to an entry-level dream job at VH1, Vivian juggles no-good men, the demands of friendship, her dog, celebrity sightings, trendy clubs and cute outfits. Krantz is, like, totally into sarcasm, parenthetical asides, multiple exclamation points "Yeah baby!!! (So scary!)" and smiley faces, making Vivian sound more like a teenage mall rat than a college graduate. Reading her is the literary equivalent of being lashed to a chair in a coffee shop next to someone who is braying her life story into a cell phone. But online fans who can't get enough of Ms. Livingston's trenchant musings on everything from Madonna to Friends, handbags to hotties, may find this enjoyable.

Who is Vivian Livingston? She is a hip and confident twentysomething with her own Web site, adored by her legions of fans for giving sage advice on everything from boys to jobs to books to fashion. But what's unique about her is that she's computer generated. Apparently her millions of fans don't mind that she's just pixels. So, whatever personal information doesn't fit on her Web site is covered in her autobiography--her days growing up in a small town in Pennsylvania and her big move to New York City; her jerky boyfriends and how she became a "fashionista"; and her career saga, starting with her waitressing job to working at VH1 and then on to her current job of just living out life in cyberspace. Apart from the annoying parenthetical asides, Vivian's autobiography reads like a conversation over coffee with a long-lost friend. It is fun and sassy, though superficial, and perfect for a sunny day at the beach or a rainy day on the couch. Carolyn Kubisz

Yes! Yes! Yes! LMAO!

I absolutely LOVED this book! You actually feel like you are having a conversation with your best girlfriend over latte while you are reading this book. I laughed out loud so many times from getting her first "Brazilian wax" to her crashing out at her boyfriends place for the first time after a night of cocktails, not knowing that her turqiouse undies were in plain view the next morning - she wakes up and he says, "So...what's up J-Lo?"
Vivian is so extremely honest and forces us to remember that "one" guy in every girls life that may have not treated us so kindly and was somewhat abusive to us. Yes, we've all been there at one time or another. But, she keeps on going on and is bound and determined , "I will show him". She makes you remember what it's like to go on first dates and the games that men/women play IE; The Rules.
I seriously think that anyone - no matter what age you are, you will laugh-out loud at this book! I can't wait until her next novel - ...

Not that impressed....

I LOVED The Autobiograpy of Vivian and think that I gave it ***** stars. Not so for the sequel. I find it hard to believe that the same person wrote Vivian Lives since I laughed*and*laughed at almost every page of her first novel.
To be honest, I've forced myself to read maybe half of the book and am so dissapointed. I agree with other opinions that it's publicity hyped for her website [...] (which I still love).
This sequel was such a let down to me that I would not recommend unless you have trouble falling asleep at night....

Loved Vivian, Wish Her Book Was Worthy Of Her

I have to start by saying that Vivian is one of the most lovable, funny characters I've come across in quite a while. Her narrative was like chatting with a friend ("okay, so anyway..." "Anywho, moving on...") I even liked the multiple exclamation points and emoticons - I do that all the time when emailing my friends, so it rang true for me.
However, because Vivian was so cool it was a disappointment to see her stuck with such an unbelievable, Sex In The City wannabe story. As many times as I giggled out loud reading one of Vivian's daffy, totally genuine 20-something chick observations, I spent just as much time rolling my eyes at some of the more outrageous plot elements. So many things, big and small, were just completely ridiculous, from the very beginning when she writes a prize winning song (no prior musical experience, and she apparently never picks up a guitar again), to Vivian and Sophie affording a one-bedroom apartment in the Village on the money they earn as a part time waitress and a retail store clerk, to Vivian being offered a prestigious job by a VH1 bigwig just 'cause she's cute, to how she ended up with her own website. As Vivian herself might say, riiiiiiight!
I could have accepted the unrealistic elements and treated this as a bit of mindless, but entertaining, fluff if not for the back story of how this wonderfully vivacious and well adjusted heroine was just a few months outside of a four year long physically and emotionally abusive relationship. This was just blatantly ridiculous - at no time did Vivian demonstrate any characteristics of an abused woman. She was independent, outgoing, and quite willing to start new relationships. And when they turned sour, she had enough self respect to be the one to end them, and end them immediately. I had the uncomfortable feeling that this bit of Vivian's history was tacked on as an afterthought, in order to make her more sympathetic to readers who might be put off by her way too perfect life. It was unnecessary, and I would imagine very offensive to anyone who really has been the victim of abuse, by implying that overcoming such trauma is or should be this simple. I had a big problem with this, and my rating lost at least one star because of it. Vivian deserved better than this!
As a side note, I didn't realize when I bought the book that there really is a Vivian website, which apparently existed before the book was published. I was curious enough to go and check it out, and thought it was sorta cute (Hey look! There's Omelet!) but not much else. I can't really imagine what use someone who hadn't read the novel would have for it. I wonder, however, looking at how much effort has gone into the drawings and animation, if Vivian was originally conceived as a cartoon (kinda like Daria or King Of The Hill). As long as there were better storylines, that might be pretty cool...or should I say, clutch?!! :0)
