But within weeks of the trial Aldridge is found dead at her desk, a bloodstained barrister’s wig on her head. Amazon.com Review
Although A Certain Justice begins with news of a murder, the victim isn't set to die for another four weeks. Publicly respected but privately loathed, Venetia Aldridge has far more enemies than a brilliant London criminal lawyer should--and at least one of them is determined to do her in. Venetia plies her superior trade in courts that harbor "the illusion that the passions of men were susceptible to order and control," but her past and private life are exceedingly unruly. Her married lover is intent on giving her up; her daughter loathes her; her fellow barristers are determined that she not become the next head of chambers. Even the cleaning women seems to have something on her.

The outline alone of this complex novel would take pages (as would the eclectic inventory of players), but P. D. James makes us admire far more than her brilliantly developed plot. James in fact creates a crowded gallery of surprisingly decent suspects, along with one suitably vile creature--who happens to be Aldridge's last client.

A superior murder mystery, A Certain Justice is also a gripping anatomy of wild justice. James's characters can be overcome by hate, but she is equally concerned with love's manifestations--human, divine, destructive, and healing.

From School Library Journal
YA?Venetia Aldridge, a brilliant barrister, has "four weeks, four hours and fifty minutes left of life." By the time her murder is discovered, readers have not only met most of the suspects, but have also begun to sympathize with whomever might have done her in. Everyone in the victim's life, from her 18-year-old daughter to the retiring head of chambers, from her former lover to the cleaning woman, has cause to have wished her ill. Adam Dalgleish, James's poetry penning sleuth, and his assistants, especially Kate Miskin, investigate the many possible suspects. After much examination of the past and present, the murderer is discovered and A Certain Justice is meted out. As with many of the author's mysteries, psychology and motivation are as important as whodunit and the conundrum presented here is thought-provoking. Much of the action centers around the rebellious daughter and there is a suspense-filled scene in which she and her psychopathic boyfriend try to evade Dalgleish, only to have young Octavia discover that she needs to evade the boyfriend instead. YAs who enjoy James and those ready for a bit of a fright with their English mysteries will surely take to this adventure.?Susan H. Woodcock, Kings Park Library, Burke, VA

From Library Journal
Previously released in unabridged format by Random House and narrated by Michael Jayston (Audio Reviews, LJ 2/1/98), this version features Simon Prebble, the maestro of the audiobook market. In this taut, riveting mystery, Adam Dalgliesh is called in to investigate the grotesque murder of a distinguished Inner Temple trial lawyer. Well-defined and intense personalities of the main characters and knowledge of the British justice system make this latest Dalgliesh novel realistic. It showcases James's ability to portray many diverse characters and keep the listener captivated until the last word. Though either version will be a sure winner with mystery fans, the Recorded Books version is blessed with the talented Prebble.ATheresa Connors, Arkansas Tech Univ., Russellville

The ending is tedious
By Books &Stuff
Five stars for the first half of the book, then three stars until the end which gets two stars because of the drawn out nature of the improbable and less than satisfying ending. I never thought James could be tedious but the last fifty pages bored the whatever out of me. Loved the first half though. Pure James.

Thinking person's Agatha Christie
By D. P. Birkett
It starts off in classical whodunnit style with a nasty person bumped off in posh British surroundings. The PD James gimmick is to probe her characters in depth. You get told about their childhoods (always miserable) and their parents, and in many cases grandparents, and in some cases their greatgrandparents. A lot of London atmosphere and rather too much about architecture. I always have a problem with her dialog. Characters speak in long complete sentences, which is about believable when they are college graduates, but gets to sound odd for demotic speech. An uneducated young criminal speaks about throwing a knife "under a privet hedge" and goes to a "derelict cottage" separated from thr "North Sea" by a "shingle bank." Dalgliesh is a plaster saint. He has no orifices. A thing I've done with some PD James, which will horrify purists, but adds to the enjoyment for me, is to peek at the ending when I/m halfway through. Even if this does spoil it for you there are plenty more PD JAmes's. This is the 14th in the Dalgliesh series alone.

Many layered character study ala P.D. James
By Angie Cross Bly
As are all of P.D. James novels, this is very involved with character development. I felt that the effect s of obsession was the main theme of the novel. Kate's character is further explored. Ms James also delves into the divergent paths taken by Kate and Ash who are born into the same appalling circumstances...Kate becoming a police officer, Ash, a sociopath. The effects of love of all kinds... or the lack of it... is also explored. Dagliesh in this novel does not do much except glue the pieces together. All in all a most fascinating book which is more than an ordinary mystery and happily filled the hours driving a 1500 mile trip.
