Amazon.com Review
While the serious Star Wars buff should settle for nothing less than the comprehensive Phantom Menace Illustrated Screenplay, this PM storybook packs a lot of punch in its 64 pages, with well-chosen screen shots and an abbreviated, novelized script. This young-adult adaptation hits all the major plot points, from the Trade Federation's ambush of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon through to Anakin's wild starfighter ride and the triumphant victory parade on Naboo. Crystal clear stills from the movie stop the action, zooming you in for a closer look. Finally, you get to check out every member of the Jedi Council, study a Podracer as it's blown to bits, and decide at long last just who's uglier, Watto or Darth Maul. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

EXT. NABOO SWAMP LAKE--TWILIGHT

QUI-GON, OBI-WAN, and JAR JAR run to a murky lake and stop as JAR JAR tries to catch his breath. The TRANSPORTS ARE HEARD in the distance.

QUI-GON: Much farther?

JAR JAR: Wesa goen underwater, okeyday?

QUI-GON and OBI-WAN pull out small capsules from their utility belts that turn into breathing masks.

JAR JAR: (Cont'd) My warning yous. Gungans no liken outlaunders. Don't expict a werm welcome.

OBI-WAN: Don't worry, this has not been our day for warm welcomes.

JAR JAR jumps, does a double somersault with a twist, and dives into the water.

Breath masks on, QUI-GON and OBI-WAN wade in after him.

EXT. NABOO LAKE--UNDERWATER

QUI-GON and OBI-WAN swim behind JAR JAR, who is very much at home in the water. Down they swim into the murky depths. In the distance the glow of Otoh Gunga, an underwater city made up of large bubbles, becomes more distinct.

They approach the strange, art nouveau habitat. JAR JAR swims magically through one of the bubble membranes, which seals behind him. OBI-WAN and QUI-GON follow.

INT. OTOH GUNGA--CITY SQUARE

GUNGANS in the square scatter when they see the strange JEDI. Four GUARDS armed with long electro-poles ride two-legged KAADUS into the square. The GUARDS, led by CAPTAIN TARPALS, point their lethal poles at the dripping trio.

JAR JAR: Heyo-dalee, Cap'n Tarpals, Mesa back!

CAPT. TARPALS: Noah gain, Jar Jar. Yousa goen tada Bosses. Yousa in big dudu dis time.

CAPT. TARPALS gives JAR JAR a slight zap with his power pole. JAR JAR jumps and moves off, followed by the two JEDI.

JAR JAR: How wude.

Lucas Script Entertains, Visual Drawings Help
By Matt Howe
Even though I haven't finished reading the script (I don't want EVERYTHING spoiled!) I am excited to own this. Lucas is back! He IS a good writer, contrary to his protestations. The script is VERY tight and moves fast. The dialogue is direct, to the point. Lucas's themes are well-drawn. There is a lot of foreshadowing in this screenplay. We've got a lot in store for us in Episodes 2 & 3.
As far as the "book" goes, it is well laid-out. The storyboards used to illustrate the script are well-placed. It's instructional to see early versions of costumes and characters. It's also interesting that Lucas describes Liam Neeson's character as "sixty years old" -- obviously it was before Liam was cast!
P.S. This is best read with the Episode 1 CD playing in the background.

Too Early for Oscar predictions? I think we have a winner...
By A Customer
I thought I was immune to the hype until I read this book. I did go to Zeller's (the Canadian version of Wal-Mart) on Sunday May 2 just before midnight, to pick up a couple of action figures, Darth Maul and Mace Windu, just for a novelty. But that was the end of my merchandise purchasing for a while at least I thought. I wake up the next morning and go to a book super store and see that the staff is fiddling with their Episode One display. I look at some colouring books, the novelizations, all very nice... then I spot an open box on the floor. Curiousity gets the best of me and I look in the box: before me is the object that has eluded Internet surfers for the last few years-- The Screenplay. I snap it up without hesitation.
I only stopped reading the thing to watch the premiere of the London Symphony Orchestra's music video on Muchmusic. Most screenwriting handbooks will tell you that a screenplay is only a blueprint, and most of them will stress that most screenplays, even of good movies, are a bore to read.
Not so this screenplay: Even without the illustrations, it is a vivid read. I was overwhelmed with elation with every bit of dialogue uttered by the characters. I don't know if this screenplay has the final dialogue from the film (which was apparently re-tooled by pro script doctor Carrie Fisher) but the voices rang true for me.
And the scene descriptions are amazing as well. Most screenplays leave a lot of set and blocking description to the imagination and discretion of the director, but since Lucas had to tightly shoot the scenes to accomodate his special effects, the scene descriptions read like a good novel.
Reading this before seeing the movie has not ruined the story for me: in fact, I want more than ever to see the film so that I can take what must be (according to the screenplay) sumptuous visuals and to hear what will be classic dialogue uttered by great actors.
I can see George Lucas getting nominated for an Oscar for this. It's that good.

Like watching the film... almost
By Pablo A Diaz
I say this is WAY BETTER THAN THE NOVEL, you gotta read this if you want to know Lucas's TRUE vision of Episode I; but still the book has some low points however: they could at least improve the paperback quality, and I would had fill it with real screenshots among the storyboards. Besides you can use it to learn more about Lucas's storytelling style: this was written entirely by George Lucas that's why the whimp hollywood critics say that the film has a very chessy dialogue, I partially agree with them, but I still say Lucas is a wonderful storyteller and he deserves more credit, however there are some problems on these writtings that even a man with a big imagination has to deal with: I know that when you write a whole story and you make the dialogue yourself you tend to repeat the same lines again later (ex.: "you assume to much") the Star Wars IV's script has the same problem, good thing Lucas has hired another guy to help him finish the Ep.II script. I definitely liked the way this book is written, and I'm sure the film's dialogue would have been better if some lines of this book were not deleted.
