Nightingales: The Extraordinary Upbringing and Curious Life of Miss Florence Nightingale, by Gillian Gill

Florence Nightingale was for a time the most famous woman in Britain–if not the world. We know her today primarily as a saintly character, perhaps as a heroic reformer of Britain’s health-care system. The reality is more involved and far more fascinating. In an utterly beguiling narrative that reads like the best Victorian fiction, acclaimed author Gillian Gill tells the story of this richly complex woman and her extraordinary family.
Born to an adoring wealthy, cultivated father and a mother whose conventional facade concealed a surprisingly unfettered intelligence, Florence was connected by kinship or friendship to the cream of Victorian England’s intellectual aristocracy. Though moving in a world of ease and privilege, the Nightingales came from solidly middle-class stock with deep traditions of hard work, natural curiosity, and moral clarity. So it should have come as no surprise to William Edward and Fanny Nightingale when their younger daughter, Florence, showed an early passion for helping others combined with a precocious bent for power.
Far more problematic was Florence’s inexplicable refusal to marry the well-connected Richard Monckton Milnes. As Gill so brilliantly shows, this matrimonial refusal was at once an act of religious dedication and a cry for her freedom–as a woman and as a leader. Florence’s later insistence on traveling to the Crimea at the height of war to tend to wounded soldiers was all but incendiary–especially for her older sister, Parthenope, whose frustration at being in the shade of her more charismatic sibling often led to illness.
Florence succeeded beyond her wildest dreams. But at the height of her celebrity, at the age of thirty-seven, she retired to her bedroom and remained there for most of the rest of her life, allowing visitors only by appointment.
Combining biography, politics, social history, and consummate storytelling, Nightingales is a dazzling portrait of an amazing woman, her difficult but loving family, and the high Victorian era they so perfectly epitomized. Beautifully written, witty, and irresistible, Nightingales is truly a tour de force.

“Through the facts [Nightingale] always saw lives,” writes Gill, author of books on Agatha Christie and Mary Baker Eddy. Such is also true of Gill, who abandons historical speculation in favor of fastidious reliance on diaries and letters from Nightingale’s family, friends, and colleagues. Although one of many existing biographies, Nightingales is one of the first to thoroughly examine the relationship between her public and private life. Besides vividly evoking Austenesque mores, Gill creates full-blooded characters, from a sickly sister to a dilettante father. Critics disagree about Gill’s tone; while novelistic, the constant use of “I” distracted some and edified others. Similarly, the myriad details both add and subtract from the narrative. Yet, on each page, Nightingales offers a unique perspective on the Bird’s fascinating life.

*Starred Review* What Florence Nightingale--the legendary Lady with the Lamp--did for the wounded and suffering British soldiers in Crimea has long secured her place in the history books. But what she did within the circle of her own family has remained largely hidden from view. Until now. Informing careful scholarship with imaginative insight, a distinguished biographer brings to life the entire gifted but perplexing Nightingale family. Unlike biographers deafened by the acclaim for Florence's courageous medical crusade in the military hospitals of Scutari, Gill can still hear the quiet but vexed voice of a father who instilled iconoclastic bravery in his daughter only to recoil in dismay when that bravery steeled her against a favorable marriage so that she could pursue her luminous ambitions. Similarly, while other biographers focus on how Florence advanced unprecedented reforms in military sanitation and medical care by deftly orchestrating two royal commissions, Gill probes the ways that Florence's descent into invalidism during the commission years strained her already difficult relations with her sister and mother. To be sure, readers will learn much from Gill about how Florence pursued her epoch-making objectives on the broad Victorian stage--waging fierce bureaucratic warfare against obstructionists in the War Office, drafting key parliamentary speeches for sympathetic cabinet ministers. But because they can turn elsewhere for analyses of her public life, readers will appreciate this book most for its novel perspective on Florence's alternately tender and irksome dealings with her own kin. Review
“A dynamic and absorbing account, written in a lively and captivating manner, of a remarkable family and its even more remarkable scion, Florence Nightingale. Gill has used her sources to maximum effect, engaging the reader in a pacy narrative that brings that far distant ‘other country,’ the Victorian age, so vividly to life. I highly recommend it!”
–ALISON WEIR, author of Eleanor of Aquitaine

“Nightingales is wonderful. I will certainly never again dare to think of Florence Nightingale as ‘a lifelong spinster’ with an invalid’s need for noble self-sacrifice, but as a powerful woman who changed the course of the British government toward their own wounded forever.”
–NANCY MILFORD, author of Savage Beauty and Zelda

“Imaginatively conceived and elegantly written, Nightingales tells the compelling story of a family and an era with great style and flair. Even minor characters are wonderfully drawn and the tone is both intimate and erudite.”
–DIANE JACOBS, author of Her Own Woman: The Life of Mary Wollstonecraft

“A beautifully written and nuanced portrait . . . Gill infuses her subject with rare vitality and untangles the strands of historical, social, and personal forces that determine the course of female life. This multifaceted approach challenges the myths surrounding Nightingale’s struggle for fulfillment, giving us a fascinating window into one Victorian woman that becomes a lens through which we can view ourselves.”
–SUSAN HERTOG, author of Anne Morrow Lindbergh

“Nightingales brilliantly captures the unique intensity both of individuals and an age. Gill vividly evokes the complex and fascinating interrelations of an exceptional family. She engages her reader at every step as we travel with the fiercely intelligent and charismatic Florence Nightingale on her remarkable life journey.”
–ANNA BEER, author of My Just Desire

Florence Nightingale's influence on modern nursing care.
By florida gardener
This book although tedious at times, due to the language and writing style of the Victorian era is one of the very best and most complete coverage of the era, people's mindset, its culture, politics and the status of women. Florence Nightingale's life is fully studied as well as her family and ancestors who influenced her and shaped her to become the woman she was. It is a story of the development of nursing and medical care or lack of at the time. She experienced first hand the poor condition of the soldiers and the difference that could be made through sanitation and cleanliness. She had many pit falls and obstacles to overcome but through diplomacy and hands on example she overcame them. Very fascinating book and wonderful biography of the times and the woman who so influenced by her example, the changing times in patient care.

By Jaie J.
A little too chatty and contrived, and the author really needs to work on not personalizing conclusions and opinions so much. The constant "I think Florence" or "I feel Florence" is a bit much. Leave that kind of writing to your blog please.

Other than that, a decent book, little bit of protesting too much when it comes to Nightingale's sexual proclivity, and again, personal opinions shouldn't be presented so strongly in what is attempted to be a scholarly examination, it causes the credibility to take a bit of a dive.

Light, fluffy history writing for anyone that wants to read about Nightingale in a way that won't tax your brain. Don't worry about drawing conclusions, the author has done that all for you.

Fantastic story, interesting, well-written!
By Rita Seymour
Gillian Gill is an exceptional storyteller and she does an amazing job sharing the story of the Nightingales and, in particular, Florence Nightingale. I could barely stop reading! It took awhile for me to get accustomed to King this, Queen that, Duke this, Duke that, but after Gill gets beyond some of those explanations, the book really comes alive. I have since ordered two more of her books! I gained such a deep appreciation for the entire Nightingale family. I was elated that Gill chose to devote a great deal of the book to the entire Nightingale family as I actually found the entire family most interesting. You cannot help but feel tremendous respect and empathy for all of the Nightingales. As for Florence Nightingale in particular, she of course was an exceptional woman with a sound mind and lots of ambition. But she was so very complicated and had inner struggles that it seemed she never quite overcame. I was sad to read that she refused to have a relationship with her family for many years but eventually came around. This is an excellent book -- I loved it, loved it, loved it.
