Siegel is a reporter who has written a couple of legal thrillers (e.g., Actual Innocence) and some true crime books. On the evidence of this work, set in a little California coastal town whose charms are rapidly giving way to progress, he is better at plotting there are some devious twists here, as well as some that don't quite ring true than characterization. Doug Bard is a conscientious and dogged detective, separated from his upwardly mobile financial-analyst wife, Sasha, who is not at all happy with the local DA's finding that a fire that killed an elderly eccentric and his young piano student was accidental. When the authorities finally accept that it was murder, they seem to Doug to have hit upon the wrong man as a suspect. Meanwhile the ambitious DA, glamorous Angela Stark, has set her cap for a man of mysterious wealth who's trying to develop the town. Bard is very much on his own as he tries to puzzle out the killer, and meanwhile comfort Sasha and young daughter Molly, who are receiving threats possibly because of him and his investigation? The balls are all kept in the air, and the real villain is a genuine surprise, but Sasha's role is unconvincing, and the characters are wooden; it takes more than fondness for a daughter to create a believable hero, and a love scene in which a man's body "reminded her of a Greek statue" suggests that style is not one of Siegel's strong points.

The Los Angeles Times reporter follows up his two previous legal thrillers--The Perfect Witness (1998) and Actual Innocence (1999)--with something of a change of pace. The setting is the same, La Graciosa, California; the writing is excellent, as always; even some of the supporting cast is familiar. But where is Greg Monarch, the attorney-protagonist of the previous novels? Retired, Siegel tells us, and living near Puget Sound. Stepping in as lead character is Douglas Bard, a detective on the local police force, whose suspicions about the supposedly accidental deaths of a schoolteacher and one of his young female students lead him into very deep, dark waters. It's always a little curious when an author dumps a series character, but Siegel very quickly makes us forget Monarch and cheer for the new guy, Doug Bard, a determined and shrewd investigator who only takes "No" for an answer when it suits him. It would be nice to see these two characters team up; until that happens, we look forward to more Bard adventures. David Pitt

The writing is pretty good, but this novel better fits the Fantasy ...

The writing is pretty good, but this novel better fits the Fantasy genre than the Crime genre. Everything about this novel is too fantastic
Fictional Chumash county on California's Central Coast is supposed to stretch from the ocean to the inland desert containing lizards and snakes. It supposed to have big enough cattle ranches so that there are "cowhands" everywhere, yet has enough big farms to warrant migrant workers. It has thick forests that reach to the ocean and volcanic peaks too. Yet there is a country club that presumably has an 18 hole golf course.
There are honky tonk bars in town that are full of "cowhands" and have antlers and animal traps on the wall as decorations. Yet, right next door are high class restaurants where ladies in evening gowns and men in tuxedos are seen entering.
Jimmy O'Brien is the editor of the local newspaper and has a newsroom with a row of computer terminals with a reporter in front of each terminal, yet only the editor is shown on the streets going after stories and only he is shown to write articles for the paper.
Doug Bard, a third generation Sheriff's detective, readily admits that he's pulled some dirty tricks to incriminate a suspect that he has a gut feeling is guilty. Yet, after he essentially gets Jed indicted for a double murder using such a dirty trick, he turns around and ruins his 14 year career by trying to now prove that Jed is, in fact, innocent, and ends up having to resign.
The Sheriff's Department has a felony/homicide unit big enough to staff several detectives, yet the county has only one courtroom to process all their arrests. The Sheriff's Department, the county jail, the courtroom, and the DA's offices are all housed in an adobe structure that was originally a Church structure dating back 100's of years going back to the Spanish Mission days, yet the whole county is experiencing a real estate and building boom, so clearly there is enough money around to get more modern and more adequate housing for the local legal system.
That the real killer in the end turns out to be the female DA who is vigorously trying to put an innocent man on death row is just unreal.
Not much in this novel that was very believable to me. It is a Crime novel from Fantasy Land.

Don't waste your time

Characters are cookie cutter, the writing is poor and rather cheesy. Far too many cliches for my liking. The story certainly has potential, but this book was a colossal failure in my opinion. This is my first Barry Siegel novel and I hope that it is not an indication of his other works.

Stop with the Spoiled Kids Aready

This character will never replace Greg Monarch, the author's previous hero, because of his family baggage. Old Greg carried a lot of baggage too, but it didn't seem to get in the way so much. Why is it that author's think smart mouthed kids who need to be disciplined rather than coddled and excused, are a desirable plot fixture? Instead of making this "hero" more likable, it made him appear weak and not too bright. It was fun to try to identify the California central coast community of the setting, but people who know this area will find it pretty unconvincing. However, considering there is so little out there to read except for serial killers (the more horrifying the better) and unbelievable female protaginists filled with angst (actually a problem with a lot of male characters as well) this is worth the time especially if you can get it a used book store.
