It's time to face facts. Low fat diets don't work. Thousands of Americans on low-fat, high-carbohydrate regimes gain back their weight in record numbers, often wreaking unhealthy havoc on their bodies. Why? Because the culprit isn't too much fat, it's too much sugar--and low-fat food is full of it. The truth is sugar causes the production of insulin which, in large amounts, keeps your weight from dropping off, no matter how strictly you diet or how often you exercise. Just look at the ingredients of your favorite foods: sugar is everywhere. So how can you possibly avoid it? The answer: SUGAR BUSTERS!
Developed by three renowned physicians and a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, SUGAR BUSTERS! is a revolutionary new diet plan based on sound nutritional principles that shows you how to eliminate sugar from your daily menu through easy-to-follow recipes and meal plans. This effective and groundbreaking program steers you away from overhyped (and insulin-producing) starches such as potatoes and pasta, white bread and white rice, carrots and corn--and leads you toward a sensible consumption of delicious foods once considered taboo. With SUGAR BUSTERS! you will
Develop a diet plan that is right for you
Determine the glycemic levels of various foods with a handy glycemic index

Learn the myths of calories, fats, cholesterol, and weight gain
Feel great, increase your energy, and prevent chronic disease
Simple, practical, and easy to adapt to your busy lifestyle--including savory gourmet meal plans designed by twelve of New Orleans's famous restaurants like Antoine's, Galatoire's, Commander's Palace, and Brennan's--SUGAR BUSTERS! is the diet of the future, an amazing, new approach to eating, nutrition, and health. Remember:
Cutting calories in the diet only leads to temporary weight loss.
Fats are vitally important to your body's metabolic process.
Large meals should never be eaten before going to bed--because cholesterol is also manufactured at night.
Fruits should not be eaten in combination with carbohydrates and fats.
A glass of wine has less sugar than an ear of corn.
Baked potatoes quickly convert to sugar in your stomach.
Forget the fight against fat! Break the sugar-starch habit today and enjoy the foods you love as you get healthy and lose weight with SUGAR BUSTERS!

Amazon.com Review
Sugar Busters! was first independently published in New Orleans and sold an amazing 100,000 copies by word of mouth. Its advice may be hard to swallow for most Americans, as it advocates squelching your sweet tooth in order to lose weight. Those who follow the diet, however, swear by it, and no wonder: excess sugar consumption has been linked to depression, impaired immune function, and, of course, weight gain, as the body can almost effortlessly convert sugar to fat. Because sugar comes in so many different forms and hides out in unexpected places (carrots, beets, and white bread, among others) the authors list what foods are safe and which ones should be avoided and include a two-week menu plan for getting started. They also tempt the taste buds with recipes for unheard-of "diet" dishes such as Eggs Sardou and Filet Mignon with Bleu Cheese.
This book will be too basic for anyone with a solid knowledge of nutrition, but for those who are overdoing the sweet stuff and want some handholding and help with shedding excess weight, Sugar Busters! can do nothing but help.
From Library Journal
Created by Steward, the CEO of a Fortune 500 energy company, and three M.D.s, this best-selling diet asserts that overindulgence in sugar is the root of many weight and medical problems, causing the body to produce too much insulin, which, in turn, causes fat storage as well as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The diet forbids refined sugar and simple carbohydrates like pasta and potatoes but permits traditionally taboo foods like butter, red meat, and eggs. Because the target audience of this program is both medical professionals and laypeople, highly technical medical terms are used throughout. Lengthy scientific explanations of the digestive process, coupled with Steward's slow Southern drawl, may cause a layperson to quickly lose interest. Also, some nutritionists and medical organizations have given Sugar Busters poor reviews, declaring that the authors overstate the insulin-to-fat connection and lack scientific data to support their claims. Public libraries should purchase only for demand.?Beth Farrell, Portage Cty. Dist. Lib., OH

My mother has been dieting ever since I can remember. When I was nine she had lost fifty pounds and was working as a lecturer for Weight Watchers. Eventually, she gained all the weight (and more) back again, and after many attempts at diets that didn't work, she resigned herself to being a "yo-yo" dieter--someone who can lose weight, but simply can't keep it off, usually gaining back more than originally lost. Why am I telling you this? Because three months ago I gave her a copy of Sugar Busters, not because I thought she should go on another diet, but because I wanted her to take a good look at her eating habits, and realize how they were affecting her quality of life. I had noticed that she would not really eat too much at meal time, but that she often had sweets inbetween, and almost always had dessert. And always had heartburn and stomach problems.
She's lost over 25 pounds since Mother's Day, and hasn't had a twitch of heartburn. She doesn't follow a strict "you can never eat anything tasty ever again" diet, but moderates her habits and is really getting an enormous kick out of being in control. Next she'll be starting on the exercise part, following Eight Weeks to Optimum Health, by Dr. Weill. If she can do it, so can you.A. Scheibe

this is no quick fix! but it makes sense!
By cyndi mulder
Hasn't anyone read the whole book? Having had a weight problem all my life, I feel I have tried virtually every thing there is, not only to lose weight, but eat right. What a lot of people like myself want is a quick fix to a weight problem that did not happen overnight. Like other overweight people, I was looking for the "magic" diet/pill that would let me wake up one day skinny. Guess what, it doesn't work that way. I didn't become fat overnight, nor will the reverse happen overnight either. The one word missing in all of the negative reviews is moderation. Of all the programs that you can do on your own, I have found that this works, if you use moderation. It does allow more fat than others and virtually eliminates sugar as we know & love it, but it also promotes eating natural grains, fresh fruit & vegetables, & lean cuts of meat. And yes you can have dessert! It's up to the reader to understand that just because you can have nuts doesn't mean to eat the whole bag! Nor does it mean to eat a whole stick of butter with a loaf of whole wheat bread! Moderation is the key here, along with the other things we lazy Americans hate to do, exercise, drink lots of water and eliminate caffiene. I love the fact that I can still enjoy a little butter with my roll, but it's up to me to decide how much. Also, for those of you experiencing headaches, it's from the caffiene elimination, not the sugar, that's why a bag of M&M's works to get rid of it! So for all you naysayers, when you find the "perfect" diet that melts it all away no matter what you eat or how much, let me know, but until then, this is the lifetime way to eat for me.

Excellent eating plan
By A Customer
I wanted to lose ten pounds in time for summer. I have been following the sugar busters plan for two weeks and I have lost 8! I'm never hungry. I don't consider it a diet because diets are frustrating. This takes no will power. I love it.

3 MDs and a former Fortune 500 CEO say: "Sugar is toxic."
By Donald Mitchell
This is the most unusual nutrition/diet book that I have read. Its strength is a reasonably thorough overview of how natural and processed sugars affect your body chemistry. Except for people with diabetes and hypoglycemia, some of this information will be new. I think it is a valuable book for people to read since surveys continue to show that most Americans believe that the way to cut down on their fat is to cut back on fats. As a result, sales of fat-free products are soaring along with waistlines, obeisity and weight-related diseases. One of the interesting factoids in the book was that middle-aged men around 50 have only 18 months more of life expectancy now in the United States than they did in 1900. This is true despite all of the advances made in health care that should extend life for those with cardiac disease and cancer. For example, did you know that eating excess sugar causes the body to make more cholesterol. Many people may be able to reduce cholesterol more with sugar reduction than with cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Although it would have been nice to have taken a broader look at nutrition in this book, it is my understanding that it is correct that excess quickly-absorbed sugars (whether from Coca-Cola, corn or a candy bar) drive up your blood sugar level, cause your body to create insulin to store the sugar as fat, and suppresse the glucagen that causes your body to burn stored fat. There are excellent tables to show how these results vary after a high carbohydrate versus a high protein meal. Carbohydrates are turned by your body into sugar, even if they start out as starches. So you have to beware of baked potatoes as well as beer.
Clearly, our health can stand a lot of improvement. It stands to reason that eating changes should be an important factor. While tens of millions diet, few actually succeed in keeping the weight off. This is one more sign that we are doing something wrong. The authors point out that sugars have been available to the masses for only a few generations. Prior to that, only the richest people suffered from too much sugar, bleached flour, and beer. As the rest of the world becomes wealthier, we face the risk of creating even more harm.
I found the lists of what to eat more of and what to eat less of easy to follow and understand. I am not competent to comment on the recipes, fourteen day diet, and restaurant recipes. But if you are interested in such things, they are in the book.
Be sure to learn the important lessons about avoiding excess sugar from this book. Then use that a springboard to learn more about what other nutritional changes can help you. I suggest Dean Ornish's book, Eat More, Weigh Less, as another good resource. He takes on the fat side of the intake equation in a thorough and useful way. After you have learned all about nutrition, go on to Dean Ornish's book, Love and Survival, on how human connections affect our health even more than nutrition does.
Overcome as many stalls as possible about how you eat and relate to others to have the fullest, happiest, and most healthful life!
