In For the Love of Ireland: A Literary Companion for Readers and Travelers, Susan Cahill (editor of the anthology Desiring Italy) pairs more than 60 writings (by over 40 authors) with geographic, sociological, literary, cultural and practical information. Pieces by Joyce, Roddy Doyle, Yeats, Edna O'Brien, Seamus Heaney and others are followed by Cahill's explications of the works' diverse settings, references, characters and events. Cahill includes travel guide details, such as the current schedule for the ferry that Sean O'Faolain described 50 years ago in An Irish Journey. Driven by literary enthusiasm rather than travel needs, the book suggests jaunts in 16 counties.

This combination anthology and travel guide uses excerpts from the works of many notable Irish writers, both classic and contemporary to set the scene for the traveler to Ireland. While reading this book, one may wander the streets of Dublin with Jonathan Swift, see Limerick through the eyes of Frank McCourt or experience Sligo alongside William Butler Yeats. Each literary selection is followed by practical tips for discovering the writer's subject. While this book will please lovers of Ireland and Irish writers, it should not be used as a primary travel planner. It is more suitable as a companion volume for the traveler to read while exploring the Emerald Isle or as a book for the armchair traveler. Cahill's other works include a similar guide to Italy (Desiring Italy, LJ 7/15/97) and several anthologies of women's literature. Although she is the editor of this collection, Cahill is in fact far more than that. She has not only made a splendid selection of writings that describe Ireland's various regions; she has also put it into the context of a careful yet colorful literary gazetteer. The literary array is comprehensive, including younger contemporary writers like Roddy Doyle and Rita Anne Higgins as well as such classic authors as Joyce, Beckett, and Swift. What's more, some ancient Irish (Gaelic) selections, represented in translation, are complemented by pieces by contemporary writers in Irish. It all provides great armchair traveling, with such companions as Michael Longley at Mweelra in Mayo and William Butler Yeats at Dooney Rock in Sligo. Readers may be tempted to go beyond the armchair with this book, however, so beef up the Irish travel shelves in general for its arrival. Patricia Monaghan

FOR THE LOVE OF IRELAND

This volume proves the old Irish adage that although the English invented the English language, only the Irish know how to use it. Whenever I travel, this is the first item in my bag and, no matter where I am, I can open it at any page and be overwhelmed by the beauty of words I read. There is something of joy and sadness by so many writers, that no reader can be disappointed.

"For I am of Ireland
The holy land of Ireland
And time runs on," cried she.
"Come out of charity
Come dance with me in Ireland."
This Ireland calls throughout Susan Cahill's many-splendoured book, "For the Love of Ireland." It is, she tells us, "...both an anthology of engaging primary sources in which writers evoke a particular place and a travel guide to the places and contexts that these writers bring to life."
Ah, but what places! The four great provinces (Leinster, Munster, Connacht, and Ulster) are opened to us, with a generous helping of places within these: Dublin, Kildare, Meath & Wicklow; Tipperary, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, and Clare; Galway, Mayo, and Sligo; and Donegal, Derry, and Antrim: names out of legend and song and history.
And what writers: some old, some classic, some contemporary, selected of their best. In Dublin, for instance, there's Jonathan Swift, Sean O'Casey, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Eavan Boland, Nuala O'Faolain, and Roddy Doyle. Our companions for Cork are Sean O'Faolain, Frank O'Conner, Lorrie More. In Atrim, Brian Moore and Medbh McGuckian. Some may be familiar & a joy to walk with them in places they loved, however bitter-sweetly. Some may be new to readers and leave us desiring of more.
This in itself would be reason to want this book, but there it gets even better. Cahill provides for each place, for each writer, a fine description of how to get to where the writer was telling us about (including route numbers and turns) and what you can still see. Thus,
"Still south I went and west and south again;" moving in the direction of Synge's "Prelude," you come to Sallygap, Ireland's highest crossroads between Kippure and Djouce Mountains. From Sallygap, detour west (toward Blessington) to see perhaps the most literary point of origin on Ireland's natural landscape: the River Liffey which begins in Wicklow as a tiny stream ten miles from Dublin." (p 120). The River Liffey! Joyce's Anna Livia Plurabelle, the ALP of "Finnegans Wake," of "Tell me, O tell me, about Anna Livia Plurabelle, Tell me all about her." Which he does.
Readers who love stories, plays, poems, books and whose hearts stir at the names & places will find "For the Love of Ireland" among the best of literary companions. A fine guide to Ireland's landscape of rivers & mountains & fields &, yes pubs & places to stay. A glorious fellow traveler bringing us some of the finest writers who were & are of Ireland, inviting us to dance with them for a while, in joy and charity of spirit.
Highly recommended with no reservations other than what Cahill herself tells us: there's more and more than could be included even in this 460 page book.

I am still reading this book, Yet, I can recommend it as a great help to someone like me who is planning a visit to Ireland, to someone who has already been to Ireland, as well as the 'arm chair traveler' who would like a taste of Irish thought and behavior as represented though the voices of Irish writers - some famous to everyone and some who may be unknown to the reader. Presented in groups based on location, the book starts with writers under the spell of Dublin. Each writer is introduced and speaks through prose, poetry, a scene from a play, or such. Then reader is invited to take a walk around the portions of Dublin described, street by street, building by significant land mark. The only improvement I could suggest to the author would be to include maps. I guess that's where Google Earth comes into play!
